1981 would see the beginning of the Gen 3 era, which would last until 1991. The big story was Darrell Waltrip, who signed with Junior Johnson and began to rule the 90s. With 12 wins, Waltrip was able to hold off Bobby Allison for the 1981 title. Harry Gant also burst on the scene at the age of 41, getting several runner-up finishes and finishing 3rd in points.
