Thanks for all the help over the years. I bought an adult VFT 2 years ago which flowered, and I planted the seeds early in 2023. Had a great germination rate thanks to all your tips and videos, but I accidentally exposed them to too much direct sun early on and lost a fair few. 9 seedlings survived and recovered, and are just starting to come out of dormancy which is really exciting! No grow lights, just nature doing its thing. Can't believe how tiny the traps are when they first grow :) very satisfying hobby
Thank you for your kind words my friend, it truly means a lot! I agree, it's a very satisfying hobby. I think the difficulty sometimes makes it even more satisfying when you have success. I've 100% lost flytraps to too much sun too fast. The acclimation process can be a tad annoying but is really important. This round of seedlings is doing really well, i can't wait to see how they all turn out!
Oooooh! I love the little baby seedlings! I got my first plants from California Carnivore last year and now I'm obsessed. I like growing my garden plants from seed, so now I want to try venus flytraps from seed also! I think they will be beautiful to plant around my pitcher plants. California Carnivore sells seeds. So here we go! Flytraps are actually native to my state, so I'm going to experiment growing them inside and in my outside bog and see if there is a difference. Best wishes on your future nursery.
I don't mean to be a knit picker but a "hydrometer" is a tool which measures the specific gravity of a liquid as compared with water. The tool you are using is called a hygrometer.
That being said, I love your information and I am subscribing. Good luck with your endeavors to build a nursery.
I'm starting to get into these types of plants , hopefully I can be successful.
I know you can just keep trying
I have a quick question should i spread the 10 seeds that i got in a single planter rather than several different planters. Which is better
Hi! Questions:
I am a first time VFT owner and recently bought a baby one from a nursery in Dec. It gets pretty cold where I live in the winter so I keep it inside. I’ve been keeping my plant close to a window during the day but then I supplement with a red grow light at night. He’s grown pretty well since!
I guess my question is, when should I repot? It’s in a 3in draining pot currently. There are some black/dead traps that I have trimmed away, there’s also a little bit of moss & slight mold :( I’m just not too sure what my next steps should be if any.
I’ve been watching your videos & they have helped a lot, thanks!!!
Usually, the best time to repot is when growth is at it's slowest. This usually occurs during dormancy.
I have two different flowering VFTs very close to each other. One of the flowers has started darkening so I'm hoping to get my first seeds soon :D
If they weren't cross-polinated by insects, would the seeds create clones of the original plant?
No. Seeds are not clones. Only flower stalk and leaf cuttings. Then rhizome splits. Seeds are considered typical. For selling purposes.
Thank you for this video, I’ve recently potted some fly traps in December, followed all the germination instructions. Currently only 1 seed has sprouted, is this normal?
They can take a few weeks to a month. Since December is a long time though. I guess it depends on where you got the seeds. Some say cold stratification is required.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you for your response. Yeah I did do the cold stratification too, it was a grow kit for Venus fly traps so guessing the seeds aren’t so great.
I’ll order some from California C and see how they go :)
Ya, I'm sorry. Seed kits from bigger companies are hit and miss.... I'd get some good seeds from a nursery like CC and try theirs. You can use BUGEATER for 10% off! You should have a much higher success rate with those.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub perfect thank you very much 👍🏼
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub ordered some and they have germinated, the original one seems to be doing well too, however I’ve noticed it’s tiny mouths are closed and they have been feeding on soil mites. Is this normal? 😂
So a coworker gave me some seeds and now I have the tiniest little baby. It's about 2 months along and putting out It's 7th trap. It's still under a dome on a seed mat and doing fantastic, BUT, what do I do with it now?? 😂 when and how do I feed it? It's just chilling under my barrina lights with my orchids, they don't know what to think of it, I don't know what to think of it! 😅
Haha. This comment made me lol. Imagining your orchids giving the baby flytraps the side eye... Honestly, they don't need to feed. If they are doing well and growing, you are doing the right thing. Usually, I keep my babies really wet. Once they hit 6 months or so, I start reducing their water a bit. You can also put them outside in full sun, when you do this they will naturally catch prey. Just make sure you acclimate them slowly to full sun when you do. They take a few weeks ro harden off and be exposed to sun. Once acclimated you can give them as much sun as they can handle, in most situations!
My venusflytrap flowered and a bee was pollinating it. Its almost a week. Do i have to cut the flower off? What if i dont and just leave it.?. After seeding will my venusflytrap start growing again. Because it stop producing new traps.
The flower does pull some energy from the main plant but a healthy flytrao should stop growing entirely, maybe slow down a bit. Leave the flowers, you will see the small black seeds start to peak out when they mature and are ready for harvest.
i will try osmocote with the seedlings of the cross I am planing to make this year :) I hope to get a erect from of alien that would be cool
Any ceph updates? Lol
Lol. Not really... They are growing but taking their dang time. I'd do a video on them but there just isn't much there. It'd be a sad video. Lol.
W-WAIT WHAT???? I THOUGHT THEY WERE SPORES SO I PULLED MY VENUS FLYTRAP OF????????
