Padre Island National Seashore (BIG disappointment)

- Tim and I visited Padre National Seashore along the Texas Gulf Coast. A sixty one mile Barrier Island managed by the National Parks Department that was managed very poorly.
We started out pretty excited about this part of our Gulf of Mexico Circumnavigation but were sorely disappointed by how the National Parks Department handled the cleanliness of this park. The fact is they leave it up to the visitor to do their dirty work and its not working. Their solution is not sustainable and a complete failure. We do not recommend visiting this National Park until they get their act together.
Come along with us as we traveled along this National Seashore and ran into some obstacles along the way that cut our visit very short.

@@anotherepicjourney PINS is 65 miles long and it’s uninhabited. Much of the trash and debris come from Mexico and Central America. There are converging currents that pile up offshore debris from Mexican ships and shrimpers. It joins together on PINS in an area called the devils elbow.

First let me say thanks for visiting. Also, thanks for taking out more than you brought in. But to form such a strong opinion as to tell people to not waste their time from a one day visit is extreme. There is nothing the park can do about strong winds or high tides. That was on you to check. As for bad fishing, honestly, I dont think you were getting to the fish. The structure on PINS is very different than the east coast. You need a long rod that can cast long distances. Especially at low tide. You never mentioned any other amenities that are available at the park. There are two campgrounds, one full and one primitive. There is a dedicated windsurfing area, a public boat ramp, and a road to get to the back side of the island to fish the Laguna Madre. There are also nature trails, a duck observing area, what is left of the old cattle ranch to explore, along with alot of educational opportunities. The park also has an extensive turtle nesting program and also a nesting program for several bird species. Lastly, to address the debris on the beach. First the entire park is around 70 miles long. It has beaches on both the Gulf of Mexico and the Laguna Madre side. I am sure you are aware that all parks run on a budget and the federal government is cutting them all. The cost of maintaining anything in that environment is monumental. Not to mention that we are not very far from the southern border and the park rangers must also deal with those safety issues. So all of that leaves few dollars or personnel to pick up trash. The "telephone poles" are actually pilings that wash up from structures in the Gulf of Mexico. They come from all over. I would guess at least 90% of the garbage on the beach comes from the Gulf. Even if the park spent all of their budget on clean up, there would still be trash on the beach. The park does state on their website that this is an undeveloped barrier island. It is left completely natural. Unfortunately, mankind is part of that. If you wanted a prestine, manicured beach then perhaps you stay at one of the resorts in Port Aransas.
They are doing us a FAVOR!! Tell everyone it’s awful, crowds stick to all the other NP’s.

No, Port Aransas is horrible also. There isn't really anything in Texas worth seeing. No real reason to come here, ever.

I can't wait to visit Padre Island this winter. Please keep telling people how horrible it is! I guess you guys need to stay on the pavement. Thanks for picking up trash. Most of us do it , we just don't complain about it. If you do a little reading, you will learn that the island is called the catcher's mitt because debris from all over the world ends up being caught by the island. I'm not sure what your beef is about the telephone polls. Just drive around them. There's not that many. It's not a big deal.

As someone who stays a couple times a month on PINS, I would say, you're right, it's terrible there, in addition to all the things you mentioned, there is also sand EVERYWHERE! WTH? You should probably never return. And no one else should ever go there either. Just really really bad.

You are out of line complaining about garbage, telephone poles, and windy weather. Debris is transported onto the beach by prevailing currents from Mexico that merge along Big and Little Shell beaches. It is not the Park Service's responsibility to clean the beach. There is a park-sponsored beach cleanup every Spring - the Billy Sandifer beach cleanup now in it's 28th year.
Don't come back, we won't miss you.
Why be so harsh? Don't come back? We did more than our share of clean up. We did have a good time, maybe a different time of year it would have been better weather and better fishing. If you came to Long Island and the wind was blowing and the fishing lousy you would be disappointed too. Our beaches are beautiful and have very little trash. I'm not talking about just telephone poles.
Don't let the Parks department fool you into thinking its not their responsibility. Its federally protected land.
I'm glad to hear there is a clean up effort every spring. I guess it was after we visited.
Folks that need to serve community service sentences (cleaning up highways, etc.) could be recruited to provide much needed labor and its a win win for everyone if they got involved. The poles are worth $$ too and for free, I bet someone would be happy to clean then up and take them away. They are usable.

Your welcome :-) Its the wind at that time of year that was unbearable, and coming from NY trash is not a surprise, people are pigs. We truly did have a good time but the fishing was poor also, all along the gulf coast. We did feel the parks department needs to do a better job because the visitors can not keep up with this. Its the federal govt that has to fund this clean up, and that takes an act of congress. Maybe folks that have community service sentences can do this for free? PINS is a great place to get away from everyday life that not many can experience because of the rough journey and their lack of equipment. Always check the weather before going and you guys have a Jeep Rubicon so go further than 15 miles!!

We spent three weeks traveling up the coast from Boca Chica and every day we got blasted, last spring...
@@anotherepicjourney 90% of the time, it's windy. That's how you stay cool in this 105° Texas heat. But, there are times when it's a LOT windier than normal. That might be one of those times.

Prevailing winds bring debris from all over the world including hurricanes and dust from the Sahara. If you would have been there during the dust that blows in from Africa or the red tide with the fish kills you would have freaked out complaining to clean that up too. It’s nature. Some people see the beauty of nature some people don’t. Obviously you don’t.
Unfortunately, human made debris is part of the landscape now. You see it all over the world. Texas has 100s of miles of shore line. With the political climate congress will never allocate the 10s of millions of dollars needed to clean up these remote shore lines just to make it look like humans like it.
Don’t tell us about your east coast shores. There have been many toxic incidents. And it continues.
Keep yourselves and your ignoramus opinions out of Texas. Don’t complain about my harshness. Harsh opinions deserve harsh responses.

You're so right where else in the world where else in the United States can you drive 60 mi down an open Beach I bet they can't answer that I'm 68 and have so many beautiful memories of Padre Island before my husband passed we would go down the beach all the time you'd see wild deer bucks boar just beautiful

Really? We left the place better than we found it. You won't find another National Seashore in this condition anywhere else. This I know for sure. And its not your responsibility, so don't take it so personal, its the responsibility of The National Parks, they just don't have the recourses, so blame Washington. Just bringing attention to a bad situation. We had a good time in Tx.

Wind and Padre Island, always a good time. Sure hope you tell all your friends what a miserable time you had. As for me, I will continue to rough it, as unpleasant as that may seem.
When I went far in at PINS last year for my solo camping trip ( ua-cam.com/video/j0pK6sVthkI/v-deo.html ), I thought the same thing about the trash..... at first. I was thinking "Man how can people be such slobs!" because this was bad! I was like, how is it worse the further you go when it's frequented less by only people with capable rigs to go that far? And that's when I realized, most of the trash you see on that beach, that far in, has washed ashore. Yes, it's sad that that much garbage can come in off the water. But it does. A lot of it was things that most people wouldn't carry with them too the beach. I even found full-sized coconuts, with husk and everything, wash ashore from places further into south into the tropics. I knew those weren't brought there by people. You can't find those at the local grocery stores. PINS is not for everyone. The wind is very constant. But it is rugged and left natural, just like it should be. I'm sorry you were dissappointed and did not have what the trip that you would have preferred. I think it's great that you guys picked up some of the trash.
It's horrible. Never go there. Thank you for this video. We'll get the federal government back on track after the 2024 elections.
The state of Texas should send out trustees from the local prison system to go out there and clean up as part of their debt to society. There are plenty of felony DUI inmates that are on their last year in prison that could go out and clean up the state at almost no cost.
I had that idea as well but since it’s a National Park I think that is where the hang up is at.
A lot of the trash is from different countries that we donate a lot of the trash that is later found on our beaches.
Exactly my point, a little brain storming and interagency cooperation will go a long way...
PINS is a gem. Its like the wild west on the beach.
Do you know where 80% of the garbage comes from the Mississippi River,Mexico ,Caribbean Islands and some ships.Because of the natural flow of the currents and the way Padre curves a lot washes up there.From the place where you start to all the way down to Mansfield channel is 65 miles it would take many people to keep the beach clean.Also anyone complaining about sand ,Padre is an island of sand .
PINS is not for the rig buying type. Experience and proper rig building is a must. Thanks for clean up tho.
Want to add 1 more thing .Stuff washes up from everywhere recently natural rubber bails have come ashore from a German ship that was sunk near Brazil in WWII by USA .There also have been a few boats one was a small Mexican fishing boat that had sunk also a homemade boat that was carrying illegals from Mexico or Central America.
You need at least a 12ft surf rod and surf weights / spider weights or all you are going to get is Whiting like you caught ! got to get out deeper and always check the tides and weather conditions and the fish don't bite everyday !

To address the telephone pole issue. Remember this is a turtle nesting area those telephone poles wash up every now and then and removing them is a major effort and requires alot of logistics to ensure no major harm to nesting areas is created. Pins is a prime example of plan for the worst case. High tides and high winds can make or break a trip in a matter of minutes.

At first I thought this video was a joke trying to detour people from coming to our sanctuary. But after seeing y’all’s fishing rods laying in the sand and in the surf I realized yall don’t have much common sense and DEFINITELY arnt locals. A couple things 1 trash washes up in storms from other country’s offshore. 2 you said it yourself it is a 4 hour drive to the end. How in the world is the park supposed to pick up that much trash lol. Most locals actually think it’s fun finding things from far away that tell a story. So thank you for detouring people away from our amazing island. But please stay the hell away lol.

For 2 seasoned gentlemen that were as equipped as they claimed to be, they didn't seem too prepared. I run up and down PINS all the time, and I can tell you for a fact, that the 'poles' that was up were not there "for a long time". They get removed in an acceptable amount of time. It's irrisponsible to tell people not to visit. For the amount of staff that they are funded to employ, they do a good job. Trash washes up, and it's a LOOONG stretch of beach. Don't blame the Parks dept. Blame the lazy humans that litter.
PINS is a wonderful place. It’s not for everyone though.
We do appreciate all trash removable though.
Credit where credit is due you policed your area and left it cleaner than you found it. I wish all park visitors would do the same.
That said, I don't recommend using grocery store shrimp for bait unless it is For Sure gulf shrimp. State law prohibits introducing non gulf shrimp to the waters.
Interesting note, but I cant imagine shrimp coming from farther away then the gulf. But point well taken. Thanks for watching anc commenting, more to come! We really did have good time in TX, less wind and more fish would have made it an excellent adventure, we were disapoionted after all that travel up the gulf. Maybe it was the wrong time of year?

So, being a local the part of the island you went to is not very accessible to most people, even to locals, so most of the trash comes from the ocean but yes humans do contribute to that problem. Thank you for doing your part and keeping your area clean. More people need to do that, even the locals. Fishing is hit, and miss, I can tell you that from my experience unless you're out there fishing every day.
We have went there many times and loved it. You two dudes have each other and your broken New York State so it would be best for you to stay right there. We always check the weather BEFORE going out.
Thanks for taking out more than you took in. NPS does not have the resources to clean 60 miles of beach, especially a 270 degree closed area of a Gulf. Probably 99% of that trash washed ashore and was not left by park visitors or even originated in Texas. That is just how it is. If you wany concierge service than this beach in its natural state is not for you.
I fully understand the situation, but find it unacceptable from the federal government. They can do better...that's my point. The natural state is a beach not trashed.
Like many of the folks who have commented here, PINS, is one of my favorite places in the world. It is never the same from one day to the next. WIND? It's a seashore with constant wind. Tree trunks, trash? That is the natural cycle of things on this beach. The currents and tides bring what they bring. I have found items from as far away as Africa on this beach. Quite honestly, I'd rather have a beach as God gives it to me, trash and all, than a sanitized Disney Land of beach. Glad you came, glad you helped clean up. Maybe you will enjoy Miami beach better.
Closing it was a long debate last year. It was a big deal and took lots of folks to show up, debate, and plea for it to stay open.
That's insane. There are solutions to this issue.

90% of beach trash comes from ships and the tides, not from visitors. I don't care for beach camping. Sand gets into everything from the crack of your ass to your BLT and sleeping bag.There's nothing worse than a whiny camper, you take what you get.
I have to disagree in part with you. The garbage on the beach is not the park service’s responsibility. It it the camper’s responsibility to clean up after themselves only leave footprints from you your site. The pilings should be removed by the park service. I would take the initiative to notify the Park Rangers of the pilings.
If you want complain about something, try sandfleas, mosquitos on leeward side of sand dunes and Portuguese Man O War. My mom hated when we tracked tar from the beach into the house!!!

I camp down at PINS four times a year for a week at a time. Love it but you have to watch the weather and tides. You should have driven to the end (mile 60), its an adventure, just do it at low tide, than come back the next day or two at low tide. Great adventure. P. S. Those telephone poles make great bonfire wood if you take a small chainsaw.
I’ve been reading through the comments and on nearly all of them where the locals comment “don’t come back etc.” you guys reply with “we really did have a good time”…yet on the thumbnail you put “Don’t visit this National Park.” So which one is it?
I love Padre Island National Seashore and will be back. I stay in one of the established campgrounds so am not as affected by the tides. I watch the weather for temp and windspeed and then plan my trip. I bought a Gazelle tent that can tolerate a lot of wind because Mother Nature doesn't take orders from the weatherman. The beach at Malaquite campground is one of the few that doesn't allow vehicle traffic so is a great place to walk, go shelling. There is a nature trail nearby. I appreciate that you picked up garbage. We all need to do that since the tide brings a lot of it in. The park service keeps the bathrooms and showers clean and free of mold and I appreciate that. Thanks for staying away so that those of us who love it can enjoy it more.
There’s no way the park service would be be able to keep up with the trash. It comes in every time the tide cycles. I’ve been going down there since 94 and I would say 80% of the trash that washes up has foreign language written on it. The trash is coming from container ships that dump out in international waters. I definitely applied you for picking up the trash around your campsite. It’s just part of it.
Quit whining and deal with it. BTW, you have to get your bait much further out and use the spider weights that hold in the sand. Use "cut mullet" for bait...These dudes did not know "Giddy up from sic em!" Talk to locals who can best advise how to enjoy the island.

I love PINS and appreciate that you cleaned up what you did. I would encourage you to try again sometime. However, there will be new trash from Mexico and the rest of the gulf that converges there. A wind break between two vehicles helps when tent camping. A rooftop tent is understandably rough, but also part of the experience I suppose. I wish you'd had better luck fishing as there is some great fishing there at times. Safe travels.

I don't live in the city. I am surrounded by the most beautiful beaches on the east coast, on Long Island. You are missing the whole point of the video. Its a reflection on the National Parks Service's lack of responsibility, not yours.
Last time I was at South Padre was 2003, the beach was clean, windsurfing was great, the red snapper where biting and we had a blast right up until a hurricane tore the roof off of the hotel we stayed at in Port Isabel, luckily my truck wasn't damaged.
South Padre is different from Padre Island, South is in the valley and the other is in Corpus

You are correct, there is trash everywhere down there. My sister and I camped there for spring breaknin the 90s and it was really trashed back then. All the haters that probably aren't even from Texas have something to say, lol. It's trashed every time I go down there. One of the only places on earth that has flesh eating bacteria in the water, wonder why.

Been spending thanksgiving on the Texas coast for the last 6 years. This years (2023) is the first we’ve missed as we bought and are restoring an old house. Absolutely hate the drive through texas, but always completely worth it.

The main function is a wildlife reserve, not tourism. No one cleans the beach just like any other remote beach. Fishing is the same as anywhere in the world. Same periods nobody’s catching and there’s a learning curve specific to the area. You boys just didn’t know what you were getting into. But don’t berate PINS for your ignorance

Will be headed down next week from Minnesota. Hope the fishing is good. Honestly, the garbage doesn't bother me. Thats kinda the norm around the world in rural areas. The fact you can camp,fish and drive on the beach is awesome and have nobody around you is rare . Thanks for the vid!

Couldn’t agree more. I was there a year ago and it was a garbage dump. Not sure why so many people hype it up. TX beaches are a very low bar so maybe this seems like paradise to some.
Well you both don't have a clue as to what PINS is about. You do not know how to fish and no they don"t clean the beach for you. PINS is remote , beautiful and can be challenging. There are many other areas
where the beach may be groomed to your standards.
