I was an employee at HTC from 2013-2018 right when the M7 (As we called it in-house) dropped. The employees loved that phone and back when people complimented new phones, I never got enough of people complimenting me on a beautiful phone and the sound with our collaboration with Beats by Dre, before Apple acquired them. The Samsung at the time was the Galaxy S4 and it was all plastic.

We had supply chain issues, quality issues with the phones, lack of innovative features, and marketing that didn't hit the mark. The M8 was a step back for us, but when the M9 came out the reviews were good, but the market had moved on. Apple and Samsung were really pushing the needle and we weren't a player anymore, but I'll always have fond memories of my time there and of the products.

@@mr.watermelon3415 Loved my G6. Still have it in a drawer but I'm not sure if was a software thing or use of cheap memory/storage in it but it slowed right down to a crawl after 1.5-2 years. The camera and form factor on that thing was unreal. I loved the 18:9 and I think it was the phone that started that trend. Also, that feature that allowed you to scale your whole screen smaller to simulate using a smaller phone was something I wish caught on since even the small phones are massive now.
My father has the HTC One M9. It's still his daily phone in 2024. He looked at modern phones but for him nothing beats the feel, weight, looks and speakers of the M9.
The One M8 was the only phone I kept for multiple years. Nothing else that came in following years could match it. I was very sad when mine finally died
I remember buying this phone and being absolutely amazed as to how grand it was - the speakers were a masterpiece, the speed, the build, the camera. If they used the same design with improved internals, I'd buy it in an instant.
My favorite phone is the Galaxy S4. Micro SD, swappable battery, IR blaster, air gestures, eye tracker for media pausing and scrolling, headphone jack, dual camera photo modes, etc. it truly was no compromise for me.
But touch wiz was q disaster.I almost quit Samsung definitely need cause of that horrible touchwiz but the galaxy s6 was a game change for me especially the s6 edge.
Once in a while I miss the IR blaster but then everything works with Samsung's Smart Things and I can control them using my voice. I thought I would miss the headphone jack but in reality, I had already started using Bluetooth headphones long before smartphones were a thing. The S4 replaced my Apple phone, never cared much for it.

Absolutely. I remember being so so excited for the M9 only to just be bitterly disappointed by the overheating issues. I also expected a bit more of a design change but there wasn’t one.
I had both M7 and m8 - amazing phones. And though I heard a lot of people complain about m8's cameras - I took some of my best Instagram photos with that phone. They were so outstanding that many of my friends with iPhones wondered which phone those pictures were taken with. The camera wasn't perfect for sure, but it had some greatness in it for sure

Indeed, as a Android/iPhone user im kinda dissapointed that nowadays some Android phones are trying to look like iPhones to try gain appeal since almost everyone in some countries use iPhones.
I collect/repair older smartphones and the HTC phones are awesome for it. The speakers, availability and affordability on Ebay, the amount of spare parts from online shops including new colors for the back/front ect. The M8 having micro sd expandable storage is awesome for throwing a bunch of music and movies/shows on it to have as a backup or to give to friends as a sort of modern mixtape
Phones used to be so damn exciting. This phone was such a standout. I feel like the Galaxy S8 was the goat, everyone wanted to be the Galaxy S8. Oh and how I miss the Moto X phones, what a time it used to be.
Without even having watched your video, the answer is yes. This thing was simply awesome. HTC did not know what to do with it, so they completely effed it up and eventually abandoned it. But, my goodness, this was a thing of beauty.
I was a rep for T-Mobile then; the M7 had just launched, and HTC had partnered with us to get the phone for a significant discount. Every store I traveled to and every sales associate and customer got to hear about how amazing and how much better the M7 was. For me, I still remember the speakers. No phone at that time had better speakers and this was before wireless headphones and everything else, your phone speakers mattered so much more. I was also a rep for the HP Touchpad. I guess I have a thing for devices with lots of potential but short lived successes lol. The speakers on that were amazing too!
HTC HD2 purely because of the insane amount of mod possibilities, Windows Mobile 6.5-7, Android, dual booting both, if you had a SD card, you could even 10x boot lol😂, 9 android os and Windows lol. I miss that phone
I owned and used the HTC One M7 for about 2 years and it was impressive. Have been hoping to see a HTC comeback with another impressive flagship phone again!
I lusted after the M7, and ended up with the M8 and was so happy with it. I don't know if I'd go back to them, but they were a special challenger. I'm currently rocking the Pixel 8 Pro, though I felt my Pixel 2 brought me more joy and consistency (what with the 8's heat issues and such), and I have a LG V60 because of that sweet sweet quad DAC just as a dedicated music device.
I had the HTC One Max. It was absolutely my favorite phone. I have the Samsung Galaxy S22 now. Still have the Max tucked away. Best phone ever in my opinion.

My first smartphone was HTC one v, I loved it to death. Then several years later my friend got HTC One M8, I only needed to see it once and, i knew its a "must have" I bought it and it was amazing, audio was incredibly good, camera was amazing at the time for me, everything was just perfect! Its sad that HTC stopped making good phones and then stopped completely. They could've been going toe to toe with Samsung easily!
Had this phone and unfortunately i couldn't charge it after a couple of years. The phone was in immaculate condition other than the charging issue. The phone felt so premium and good to hold
Back in the day, the HTC M8 was a powerhouse. The camera may have lost some detail in daylight shots, but its night shots were impressive, especially considering the less advanced night mode technology at that time. The ultrapixel camera did wonders. The built quality and the speaker was impresive too. However, HTC faced a downfall when they started building a phone like other manufacturers. They tried to reinvent themselves with the U series, but people had moved on and Samsung gained momentum. I hope HTC or even Sony make a comeback and release their phones worldwide. It feels like Samsung and Apple have a duopoly on flagship phones, especially in North America. Google is there, but i feel like they are very limited when updating their features.
I remember looking at my friend’s HTC One M8 and immediately wanting it. It was the best mobile ever made in terms of form and finish. Unfortunately, it was not even available as unlocked device in Canada. HTC was not able to aggressively sell its phone in many markets otherwise it was the best Android flagship in 2014.
I've still got a One M7 and One M8 in the loft. Great phones and dug out the M8 recently when I dropped my P20 Pro. The battery has since packed in and the camera took good photos although there was a huge lag on shooting.
I have 2 M7s (got the 2nd one as a spare). Really prefered the squarer corners, the IR sensor in the on/off button instead of the full window across the top on the 8. Never used it as a phone, though, rather it was a little boom box I used to listen to music at work. Still working fine all these years later.
So glad to see this brings back the old times of having the HTC touch and HTC Evo 4g. I have the HTC one m8 and I take out from time to time just to play around with it. Wish the cameras were better but still a good phone. The main thing that I was drawn to on the phones was the hardware and how unique it was. Keep it up with these type of videos love the content.
It was a game changer at the time. Had speakers that were legitimately good, and was the first phone to use a large camera sensor which allowed it to capture more detail particularly in low light.
The GOAT was the Samsung S8 Note a real game changer, it had Galaxy GEAR VR and a desktop mode called DEX which turned the smartphone into a desktop PC though the use of a USB C to HDMI adaptor. The S6 could do those things too with a much smaller screen and a weaker processor and it lacked the S Pen. For me having my desktop PC in my pocket while out and about and having a desktop when at home was incredible. I still use the VR on the Note 8 once in a while. Currently the S22 Ultra is my daily driver, while much faster it lacks the VR, has a better screen and still has DEX.
My goat is the OnePlus 2. Easy to remove back, dual sim slot and a phone that I dropped many times in a parking lot and it never cracked once. I don't think HTC will ever be able to compete fully with Apple and Samsung, but I'd love for them and LG to take on the midrange to upper midrange tier of phones. I think they'd both scare the competition in this field.
My brother still using HTC wildfire, I'm amazed by its built quality, everything working fine, the speaker are mind blowing, moreover the HTC wildfire is very cute, tiny phone, and I love it in 2024,,
I had the M7, it was my first smartphone (moved on to a Galaxy S5 after that and have been Galaxy ever since, currently have an A54). I loved it, I used to praise the hell out of it to everyone. One of the best things about the phone was the front-facing dual speakers with Beats Audio...the sound quality on that phone at the time was top-notch. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to music without ear buds these days, but back then it was a portable stereo.
The Ultrapixel camera idea was to me, one of HTC's biggest misfires, and it was a failure that stood in stark contrast to other things that they did really well, like Boomsound. The bottleneck in capturing as much light as possible is always the sensor size plus aperture. But HTC didn't use sensors that were larger than what anyone else was using back in 2014. Whatever low light advantage it had was trivial at best. And the tradeoff with the sensor only giving you 4MP images wasn't worth it.
I was in the Sony camp at that time (I think Xperia z3 was Sonys flagship when M7 was released) but man I was impressed by M7 and M8 design and capabilities, especially that Monocoque body.
Besides the m8 gpe and wp8 edition, HTC made several other variants of the m8 as well: One E8, same specs but plastic unibody, no USB OTG , depth camera and IR blaster, and 13mp camera sensor that actually performed better! One M8 eye, same as the M8 but with no ir blaster and the 13mp camera sensor. Butterfly 2, plastic unibody but with ip57 water resistance, 13mp with depth camera. Was originally released as a AU by kddi exclusive in Japan before coming to select markets. HTC desire eye. Water resistance, dual 13mp selfie cameras, but no depth sensor.
6:07 how i miss those "google play edition" phones. the m8 is one of the best smartphones ever made for me, alongside nexus 5 (which i always dreamt of having).
I had one of those. When it first came out, it was overall very good. The screen and speakers were very good for their time. The camera was OK, despite being so low resolution. Fast forward a year or two, and the story is different: the screen is no longer the best out there, other phones have good speakers too, the camera is severely outdated and, worst of all, the software updates are no longer coming in reasonable time so the phone is glitchy as all hell. In my phone history, I had an iPhone then the HTC M8 and then another iPhone. I went back to the HTC after a year or two and almost immediately regretted it. I forgot to mention earlier that HTC’s implementation of android for this flagship model was not good compared to older lower end models like the Droid Incredible (which I loved).
Younger people will never know what HTC meant back then and their contribution to today's smartphones. This is undoubtely the best smartphone ever made. M7 was also great but the M8 was the pinnacle of smartphones. Εnd of discussion.
Still have mine M8 and will keep it for the memory of a good days. Honestly now I'm using another more modern smartphone, but I change it just 2021 after so many years of abuse in the most difficult conditions and still work well... Imagine CNC Alu Case in "2014". nowadays makers doesn't produce nothing like that any more... BULLETPROOF !
I had the original htc desire. That is the most memorable phone for me just because of the sheer number of mods that were available for that phone. I also got the m8 for my father and I'll have to agree that it was the best android phone available at the time. How I wish that htc was still a competitor today, I just loved their OS skin, far far better than Samsung's and dare I'd say than aosp as well.
It was a great phone indeed. And I think it aged very well - at least visually. And certainly made a big different in the industry. But my goat was the 1+7. For me it was the last reasonably priced well built well rounded phone. The Software was good - before the last update, battery was very good, display was good camera was decent. It was the last Android phone I was happy to use for a few years.
Had two of these because they both had faults. The WiFi wasn't working at all on one and the headphone jack was dead on the other. Both were issues I noticed immediately and weren't due to use. So, I never really got to experience this phone properly for more than 2 weeks.
Even though it was huge (I've never liked the 6 inch+ phones) the OnePlus 5T has to be in with a shout. The Pixel 4a was also a great phone for me and I always loved my yellow iPhone 5C. Smaller, plastic-backed phones are what I prefer. If there was an Android version of the iPhone Mini then I'd probably buy it every time. Oppo Find N really is the example I wish foldables would look at in terms of size and form factor.
the m8 front was fugly, large black borders around the screen despite it also having the borders where speakers are, s5 from the same year had much smaller borders and used the bottom one to fit the control keys
HTC one was a great phone. The speakers were the best for their time and everyone was impressed. It's definitely one of the best I've had.

I had the S4, I had to turn off the air gestures because it would somehow inadvertently answer calls from people I didn’t want to talk to.
Was going to say the Samsung Note 4 as the best ever. Add the S Pen to the benefits of the S4. It was a little big though.

People wont let go of wireless charging and you cant do it with a metal back. Thats why youll never see it

Also this phone was the first to predict the apps you will use based on location and time of day, something only the iPhone has now just implemented.
Well, overheating issues was from Qualcomm. They learned from that mistake ans now Snapdragon is the best mobile chipset.

M8 was the best phone I ever held in my hand. Even now. Loved the metal build. At the time the speakers were unbelievable.
I have 2 M7s (got the 2nd one as a spare). Really prefered the squarer corners, the IR sensor in the on/off button instead of the full window across the top on the 8. Never used it as a phone, though, rather it was a little boom box I used to listen to music at work. Still working fine all these years later.
I did used to own this HTC phone. And I absolutely loved it at that time, esp. for the build quality.
So glad to see this brings back the old times of having the HTC touch and HTC Evo 4g. I have the HTC one m8 and I take out from time to time just to play around with it. Wish the cameras were better but still a good phone. The main thing that I was drawn to on the phones was the hardware and how unique it was. Keep it up with these type of videos love the content.
It was a game changer at the time. Had speakers that were legitimately good, and was the first phone to use a large camera sensor which allowed it to capture more detail particularly in low light.

I had an HTC Desire 601 as my first real smartphone. I loved it.
I loved the HTC10 nice metal casing. The screen was a good size, and I could connect to an airport. It came with a good camera, and audio quality.
The GOAT was the Samsung S8 Note a real game changer, it had Galaxy GEAR VR and a desktop mode called DEX which turned the smartphone into a desktop PC though the use of a USB C to HDMI adaptor. The S6 could do those things too with a much smaller screen and a weaker processor and it lacked the S Pen. For me having my desktop PC in my pocket while out and about and having a desktop when at home was incredible. I still use the VR on the Note 8 once in a while. Currently the S22 Ultra is my daily driver, while much faster it lacks the VR, has a better screen and still has DEX.
My goat is the OnePlus 2. Easy to remove back, dual sim slot and a phone that I dropped many times in a parking lot and it never cracked once. I don't think HTC will ever be able to compete fully with Apple and Samsung, but I'd love for them and LG to take on the midrange to upper midrange tier of phones. I think they'd both scare the competition in this field.
Love the M8,as well as the Dot View Case. But what hurt it the most for me was the camera quality
My brother still using HTC wildfire, I'm amazed by its built quality, everything working fine, the speaker are mind blowing, moreover the HTC wildfire is very cute, tiny phone, and I love it in 2024,,
I went from a Nokia N95 to one of these HTC M One phones, so it was a huge upgrade for me.
I had the M7, it was my first smartphone (moved on to a Galaxy S5 after that and have been Galaxy ever since, currently have an A54). I loved it, I used to praise the hell out of it to everyone. One of the best things about the phone was the front-facing dual speakers with Beats Audio...the sound quality on that phone at the time was top-notch. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to music without ear buds these days, but back then it was a portable stereo.
When I was searching for my first phone I almost bought a HTC. Good old times
The Ultrapixel camera idea was to me, one of HTC's biggest misfires, and it was a failure that stood in stark contrast to other things that they did really well, like Boomsound.
The bottleneck in capturing as much light as possible is always the sensor size plus aperture. But HTC didn't use sensors that were larger than what anyone else was using back in 2014. Whatever low light advantage it had was trivial at best. And the tradeoff with the sensor only giving you 4MP images wasn't worth it.
I was in the Sony camp at that time (I think Xperia z3 was Sonys flagship when M7 was released) but man I was impressed by M7 and M8 design and capabilities, especially that Monocoque body.
Besides the m8 gpe and wp8 edition, HTC made several other variants of the m8 as well:
One E8, same specs but plastic unibody, no USB OTG , depth camera and IR blaster, and 13mp camera sensor that actually performed better!
One M8 eye, same as the M8 but with no ir blaster and the 13mp camera sensor.
Butterfly 2, plastic unibody but with ip57 water resistance, 13mp with depth camera. Was originally released as a AU by kddi exclusive in Japan before coming to select markets.
HTC desire eye. Water resistance, dual 13mp selfie cameras, but no depth sensor.
I had it. It was amazing and not plastic like everything else was. Amazed how they went down so quick.
6:07 how i miss those "google play edition" phones. the m8 is one of the best smartphones ever made for me, alongside nexus 5 (which i always dreamt of having).
HTC M8 not only had great speakers but a great dac and high quality mics capable of handling loud concerts.
I had one of those. When it first came out, it was overall very good. The screen and speakers were very good for their time. The camera was OK, despite being so low resolution. Fast forward a year or two, and the story is different: the screen is no longer the best out there, other phones have good speakers too, the camera is severely outdated and, worst of all, the software updates are no longer coming in reasonable time so the phone is glitchy as all hell. In my phone history, I had an iPhone then the HTC M8 and then another iPhone. I went back to the HTC after a year or two and almost immediately regretted it. I forgot to mention earlier that HTC’s implementation of android for this flagship model was not good compared to older lower end models like the Droid Incredible (which I loved).
My favorite was the moto Droid. I loved the notification "DROID"!!! And the slide out keyboard was pretty cool too
The “T” in the HTC logo on the back fell out of mine the first day I got it and I was gutted. Still my favorite phone ever
I did love that phone. For the time it was gorgeous.. I had it in a clear case and people always asked about it
I had HTCs back in the day n used to love them. Their exclusivity actually made them cooler.
Younger people will never know what HTC meant back then and their contribution to today's smartphones. This is undoubtely the best smartphone ever made. M7 was also great but the M8 was the pinnacle of smartphones. Εnd of discussion.

Still have mine M8 and will keep it for the memory of a good days. Honestly now I'm using another more modern smartphone, but I change it just 2021 after so many years of abuse in the most difficult conditions and still work well... Imagine CNC Alu Case in "2014". nowadays makers doesn't produce nothing like that any more... BULLETPROOF !
I used HTC Legend, One X, M7, M8, & U11 Unfortunately my favorite phone company is dying hoping to see again.
I had the original htc desire. That is the most memorable phone for me just because of the sheer number of mods that were available for that phone. I also got the m8 for my father and I'll have to agree that it was the best android phone available at the time. How I wish that htc was still a competitor today, I just loved their OS skin, far far better than Samsung's and dare I'd say than aosp as well.

It was a great phone indeed. And I think it aged very well - at least visually. And certainly made a big different in the industry.
But my goat was the 1+7. For me it was the last reasonably priced well built well rounded phone. The Software was good - before the last update, battery was very good, display was good camera was decent. It was the last Android phone I was happy to use for a few years.
I want to say that the iPhone 6 sold well because of the really good support from apps, I used to play the hell out of cod zombies, R.I.P, on it.
I remember when I got one. Such an amazing phone, used to love it. Too bad I got the purple camera of death and they had no warranty for Brazil.

Yes, absolutely. The HTC One M7 is my all time favorite phone.
Had two of these because they both had faults. The WiFi wasn't working at all on one and the headphone jack was dead on the other. Both were issues I noticed immediately and weren't due to use. So, I never really got to experience this phone properly for more than 2 weeks.
Even though it was huge (I've never liked the 6 inch+ phones) the OnePlus 5T has to be in with a shout. The Pixel 4a was also a great phone for me and I always loved my yellow iPhone 5C.
Smaller, plastic-backed phones are what I prefer. If there was an Android version of the iPhone Mini then I'd probably buy it every time.
Oppo Find N really is the example I wish foldables would look at in terms of size and form factor.

the m8 front was fugly, large black borders around the screen despite it also having the borders where speakers are, s5 from the same year had much smaller borders and used the bottom one to fit the control keys
The HTC One M8 will forever be in my top 5 favorite phones.

It can run LineageOS 17.1 (Android 10.0). I unlocked my bootloader on day one. This device had many great custom ROMs.
