  • The rumour that Apple is going to move away from its yearly upgrade cycle for some of its products brings up an interesting discussion regarding release frequency and how we as consumers view these product launches. Does this mark the end? And why? Let's talk about that!

the argument for yearly releases is that we don't all buy our phones at the same time, so yearly releases give us more flexibility on when to upgrade
edit: my point didn't come across well. for those of us that hold our phones for longer, yearly upgrades mean that when we do upgrade, there is a relatively new phone out, if not brand new.
now if, companies were going to release a new phone every 2 or 3 years, it is more likely that when we do upgrade, the latest phone would be older.
i don't believe in buying a new phone every year (my personal preference is every 2.5 years at the earliest, especially as the upgrades each year now are marginal). however, with new phones coming out every year, when we do upgrade, we will be able to upgrade to pretty much a brand new phone. i hope this makes sense.

There are newer technologies like UWB, 5G, 120Hz screen that it does not have, but I don't need UWB right now, 4G is fast enough. I like a 120Hz screen and want it, but the question is, do $1000 want it? So far the answer is no. Android hasn't had that many improvements to warrant an upgrade either. The biggest reason for me to upgrade, the camera, has stagnated. All smartphones nowadays take very similar images and they have all hit the photography performance ceiling. The introduction of ultrawide and telephoto lenses was nice, but algorithms and processing has not changed since Google introduced the HDR+ processing and stacked photography. The 1"-type sensors haven't really made that much of a difference either, even though I still want OnePlus to start using them. Eventually I'll upgrade, of course. But I don't think I'll notice much of a difference. What I would really like is more smaller phones, like the XZ1 Compact, or the iPhone 13 mini.

So far, this has been my cellphone journey of upgrades since I have owned cell phones. Initially, I started with some Nokia phones that predated smartphones. Then, I eventually upgraded to my first smartphone, the Samsung Focus with Windows Phone 7, in 2010.
I then upgraded to my first Android phone in 2013, the Samsung Galaxy S4. I held onto my S4 until the Galaxy S7 Edge was released, so I bought that. After that, I upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Then, I upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 the following year. I held onto my Note 9 until I bought the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, the first S series that fused the Note series and S series into one.
After my S21 Ultra, I upgraded to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and today, I have the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
I will buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra next year, but I'm considering holding onto it for some time. Now that phones are no longer progressing as they were, I may stop upgrading every year. The S25 series is a good number to stop with the upgrades. I used to keep my phones a lot longer back in the day when phones were changing much more quickly. So there is no real point in upgrading every year.
I have only done it because I'm a tech nerd and because it's the only thing I ever spent my money on. For example, my PC is 7 years old, so I will reinvest that money into a new one.
It would be nice to have a spiffy new PC running the upcoming RTX5080 GPU, so I will pick up a PC with that graphics card instead of upgrading beyond the S25 Ultra. 🙂

Manufactures aren't giving consumers, even dedicated "power users", any reason to upgrade more often than every other or third year, and that's really only for battery life gains. With 5-7 years of OS/security updates becoming a standard there's even fewer reasons again to upgrade on a shorter cycle, like yearly or biennially.

I have what my lovely wife likes to refer to as...a phone problem. I'm 53 and started using Android in the very early years of smartphones as I didn't care for Apple's UI on their early iPhones. But I'm an American and literally everyone in my immediate and extended family as well as 90 percent of my coworkers are all on iPhones. I told my wife years ago that I would switch when the iPhone got USB-C, and damn it if that didn't happen. So, now I have a 15 Pro Max with an Apple Watch Ultra 2 and, because I was getting subsidies from my carrier, I still have an S23 Ultra as well as a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. My problem is that I constantly switch back and forth because I love Android, but love the compatibility/family connectivity that the iPhone provides. My other problem is when I see trade in offers I constantly find myself trading up equipment because I don't feel I can get the same money if I sell it outright on Swappa. So, your idea of companies updating their phones every two years would be great for someone like me who can never make up their mind and are always looking to get a great deal.

Only upgrade either once I'm out of storage or broken screen. Recently went from a note 20 ultra to the s24 ultra after having it since launch

For me, there's no such thing as a bad phone anymore - they're all supercomputers and come jam packed with features, most of which I ignore and use the phone just for calls

I've always upgraded every 4 years. That's because that was the most distant point of upgrades offered on my Android phone. This S24U is my first Ultra phone and except for the painfully slow camera (which blurs most of my doggie pics) I'm blown away with its performance and screen. Dunno if I'll hold on to it for 7 years, or just how long I can expect good battery life - maybe I can go the distance with one battery replacement. Again I want to say that I am extremely pleased with the fact that I can see my display when outside in bright sunlight. The speed of the beast is always wonderful. So what could a new phone offer me? A solidstate battery with multiple-day life? I'm not holding my breath that Sammy can learn a trick from Pixel to get their camera to be snappy - they've had several years now to figure this out and they've failed. But let's say that a Samsung Ultra phone comes out with multi-day battery life and a Pixel-worthy pointNshoot camera. Oh, that'll be my next phone. I"d love me a Pixel (had many in the past) but I have no faith that G will ever produce good _hardware_. If they did I"d be rocking a Pixel in a heartbeat. Back in Reality, I LUV LUV LUV my Samsung Hardware (the S24U is awesome) and I can use whatever G software (the very best!) anywhere I want.

U can like change the slow picture taking time to fast by going to the settings i saw it on tik tok the shutter speed literally becomes to a tap so fast

@@nimasherpa2630 There are a number of settings that you can modify - however none of them help very much. They help a little. What you can do is use Expert Mode and set your shutter speed faster. This works but has two problems: 1) requires MORE light to work, so low light pics are not possible and there is no speed problem when you're in bright light to begin with; and 2) Expert Mode isn't a Point'n'Shoot feature. I really need to be able to pick up my phone when my dog is suddenly dancing or being cute and snap off a quick one.

I’ve currently got a s24 plus and planning to keep it for a very long time, had a google pixel 6 pro previously for 2 years and briefly had an iPhone 15 pro max but I couldn’t stand that so it got sold for the s24

I've been upgrading every 2-2½ years since the Note 9. I don't see the need every year personally. I do buy a ton of accessories though lol. For every phone I do upgrade to, I will get about 4-7 cases, chargers, clips, magnets, whatever.

I went from a BlackBerry Curve to an S6. 📱 When the S6 eventually stopped working, I upgraded to an S10 Plus, which served me well for several years until it began overheating. 🔥 I then went to an S21 but had a lot of issues - the phone wouldn't get a signal and would overheat. 🚫 So I switched to a folding phone, which was the worst mistake of my life! 😫 So many problems, sent it off multiple times to get fixed, in the end I gave up and now I've got an iPhone 15 pro Max and that will be my phone until it completely dies 🙃 #TechJourney #PhoneSaga

As you note, many people (including yourself) have been doing this for some years: missing out on a generation or two. I suspect that more people are doing it now, which isn't necessarily great for those of us who scour the 2nd hand market. iPhone 13 pm and s23 ultra here, since you ask 😊 Neither was new when purchased. You can also sense the ennui of tech reviewers, trying to find new and interesting ways to review new devices. I do wonder who will break cover first and not release an annual update.

the biggest upgrade I want in next generation phones is an end to the damn notch and hole punch cameras that have abused us over the last few generations. I also want more models with front facing stereo speakers, and PREFERABLY I want 16:9 displays back. - these stupid long phone designs are annoying because media (which is typically 16:9) just doesn't fit in it, there's ALWAYS black bars no matter how you hold it. overall I'm pretty happy with my sony xperia 1 v (which is the only current model phone that I was able to find without the damn notch and with the camera above the display where it belongs, and thankfully also has front facing stereo speakers, nice cameras, and while this wouldn't make or break my opinion of a device, it's got a half-clickable photo button so I can focus and shoot like a standard photo camera, and it's also still got a headphone jack while offering a good water and dust resistance rating, and a fingerprint power button that works really well). note: while I enjoy my xperia phone, and this is the second one i've owned (the previous being the xperia 1 II which I really only replaced due to physical damage that was my own fault), I'm NOT a sony fanboy... they're doing good work, but I would gladly purchase a phone with the previously stated qualifications from most major manufactuers and be happy... so why aren't phone manufacturers making phones that don't have notches or hole punches!? this used to be the norm until apple screwed it up for everybody. honestly, if google were to bring back the physical design and features of the pixel2xl (with it's really nice 16:9 layout, front facing stereo speakers, significant lack of a notch, really nice fingerprint sensor placement on the rear center of the phone), with a modern battery, soc, storage, camera, and radios, I think I could be really happy with that. I don't need fancy glass/metal designs or anything to be happy, just a design that's optimized with pretty standard features, and preferably a good price, but you know, i'd be willing to pay decent money (as I have for the xperia 1 phones, those aren't cheap) for such a design. MAAAYBE something a little bigger than the pixel 2xl though. something between 6.8-maybe even 7" if the bezels aren't too big. I've always liked phablets - it just needs to be small enough to fit in a standard men's pants pocket, and narrow enough to fit in a standard mens shirt pocket (should I need to have it there for a bit).

With Samsung, the budget phones usually sell way better than flagships because, for most people, those phones have everything that they need. A15 has an audio jack and expandable memory, but most flagships don't.

I'd like to point out that a lot of the common apps that people generally use are still supported on older versions of iOS and Android. If you're on an S10 and your go to apps are things like Facebook, WhatsApp, UA-cam, Tiktok, Spotify, Ebay you have no reason to upgrade.

I used to be a yearly upgrader until this year. I’d hop between iOS and Android based on whatever got me the best deal and whatever felt like the biggest upgrade.
I traded in my 14 Pro Max for the 15 Pro Max last year mainly for USB-C and this phone has been so good that it’s borderline boring. But I like that in a phone now.
Maybe just maybe - if the 17 line is compelling I’ll upgrade. Otherwise I’m just gonna get my battery replaced.
