Bulky knitting but make it vintage! I really enjoyed finishing this sweater with pattern written up by ‪@RetroClaude‬ in record time - maybe you could give it a try as well!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

Have you ever knit a bulky sweater? Do you usually stay away from thicker yarn because it isn't 'vintage' or maybe you usually knit modern sweaters and vintage just uses yarn that is far too thin? I feel like this is the perfect in-between for many knitters - a cute 1930s bulky jumper!

Oh I love it! Thanks for making my pattern! I love the colour of yours and the choice of yarn. It looks like you got better stitch definition with the Rowan Big Wool so the drop stitch and garter stitch pattern really pops 💚

Cute!! I recently found a 1930's athletic sweater made from bulky yarn and was a bit surprised, but I look forward to adding "the knitting was always so tiny back then" to the list of myths along with "all the people were tiny back then" ;)

I love what you said about bulky wool knitting maybe not being beginner friendly! I agree! It is so taxing on my hands and I would say though worsted or lower weight yarn may take longer it is so advantageous to a beginner over a bulkier weight. Ok back to the rest of the video. I just had to stop and comment before I forgot to 😅

I cannot use anything heavier than a worsted weight for the same reasons you mention. Years ago when I first started it was really encouraged so I tried, but it hurts my hands SO much. I’ve boycotted it now and just mentally prep myself that lighter knits take longer.

From Deb in North Carolina…you look gorgeous in that sweater! My body type is not flattered by that shaping, sadly. I’m a tunic with leggings lady, which doesn’t stop me from enjoying knitting all sorts of beautiful things. I just love your channel. The vintagey vibe really speaks to me. Thanks for being you and sharing yourself with us! ❤

I don't knit a lot, and whenever I've tried circular needles, I just cannot figure out how to manage the cable. Why didn't I think of it before: teeth! 😂
In all seriousness, I saw Claude's and was tempted then, but yours has convinced me! I need to add this to my list for real!

It's knit beautifully and it's awesome that Claude made the pattern free, but super bulky yarn just isn't my jam. And for newbie knitters I'd suggest worsted or Aran weight yarn. A lighter weight works up too slowly for the dopamine gratification and heavier weight is, like you said, hard on the hands.

I love that you and Claude did this! I love both your channels. I love the 1930's. I really want to knit something from that time but I'm new to knitting so I've been a little nervous. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the information you both have put in your videos. ❤️

Your sweater came out well and looks good. Personally, I don't use bulky yarn because I don't want to have to deal with the overly large knitting needles or crochet hooks that are often required. Such projects would require years for me to finish!

Love your version of this sweater! I started mine just last week after seeing Claude's video and pattern, and your version has spured me on to finish mine😊 I'm finding the drop stitches hard to move over the section of the needles where they are joined to the cable, looks like you kind of experienced the same tightness? Other than that - once this sweater is done, I think I'll mostly stick to my 2-3,5mm needles. Happy knitting!

I recently made a bulky yarn pillow, it's gorgeous and it took me maybe four hours total?? but yeah, the weight was a struggle, specially because with wood needles and acrylic yarn it just takes so much effort to slide the stitches down, and it was quite the pillow (maybe 45x45cm?), so my forearms were WORKING lol
Not looking for a new bulky yarn project so soon, as happy as I am with my bigass pillow.
Lovely video, and it's such a gorgeous sweater!!

I don’t knit but I’m a new subscriber and I find your content fascinating.
Idea for joining the yarn could be to use a barbed felting needle & pad & mat it together then trim it with scissors to match the width of yarn. Hope this makes sense. I think it should definitely work with wool yarn. I do wool felting & all kinds of crafts, but was all thumbs in knitting & crochet! Lol

I love the pattern very pretty, very unique look with the bulky yarn, you made a lovely colour choice. Just a tip on the spit splice, to lessen bulk on the finished felted join just unply the yarn ends youre going to join, splitting the yarn in half for 2-3 inches, remove half the bulk from each end youre going to join. Felt the now 2 thinner ends together and you have a strand of yarn the same thickness as the rest....I hope that made sense. I learned this the hard way after not doing this and then seeing a big fat blob of yarn where I joined it, it looked dreadful and I had to unknit and redo it.
