  • Hand knits for men and women in service - that's the promise that my WWII Knitting booklet promised, and that's what it delivered! I set out to make a reproduction of a Canadian V-necked vest (for people serving in the Women's Military Service Corps), and along the way I learned a ton about the fascinating history of the civilian Homefront effort and wartime knitting.
This is only a drop in the water of the amazing history I learned - if you want even more information, I'll be releasing another video with amazing photos, propaganda images, videos and speeches next week, so be sure to subscribe and check back in for that!
And if you are looking for my "Behind the Seams" video, that should be out shortly as well - leave me a question if you have one, and I'll do my best to answer it in the video!

This is a video about making a servicewoman's knit vest from a Canadian Red Cross knitting booklet. It touches a bit on historical knitting, specifically about wartime knitting in World War Two with some amazing audio clips from the war years, 1939-1945 both from soldiers on the frontlines as well as civilians on the home front who talk about knitting for the war, and knitting for victory.
If you like this video, then you should definitely check out my other video, the history of wartime knitting, in which I go even farther in depth about the history of knitting for soldiers and knitting for the war effort going back as far as the American Civil War, and talking about the role the Red Cross played in later, more organized efforts to get civilians to contribute to the war effort by knitting - mainly through a massive propaganda effort - as well as talk about who exactly was knitting (hint: it was everyone, regardless if you only see middle-aged white women in the history books), how knitting was potentially involved in espionage of the time, and much more!

I I'm really enjoying your wartime knitting videos. My grandmother was an expert knitter and knit for the Red Cross. I still have one of her olive drab sweater vests that she made for my father when he went off to war. She could even keep knitting in the blackouts. when I was a teenager I asked my great-grandmother to teach me to knit but Grandma came in and found her teaching me continental and had a fit ..she wanted me to learn American style.. an argument ensued so I just left the room.. my dad asked me what was the matter and I told him about the argument so he went and got encyclopedia and we sat down together and he taught me how to knit.

I have my grandmother's original WWII knitting pattern book.... she made hats for my grandfather out of it. (She HATED knitting and sewing, so the fact that she knitted something for him meant she loved him A LOT!) A few years ago I made that same hat for my son. 🧡

My favorite wartime knitting pattern is the one from the V&A for a balaclava with earholes for "telephone operations". They look absolutely ridiculous, and I would love to know if the soldiers actually wore them. 🤣

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  2 роки тому +15

Omg yes, I’ve seen them! As someone who bikes home 30 mins in negative temps, I absolutely have considered wearing a balaclava, and I imagine that if my duty required me to hear clearly, I’d probably use the holely ones… but yea, they look pretty ridiculous 🤣🤣

Thank you! It was definitely a bit tricky to find information from a purely Canadian standpoint, much harder than from the US side of things, so I had to embrace both, but I think it worked out well! Glad you liked it, and hope you find the other videos in the series as interesting (and of course the history of wartime knitting delves a bit more into marginalized communities and their contributions, using many of the sources I shared with you the other day!!)

This cabin is my friend's and it's been in the family (minus a couple decades in the middle) since it was his great grandfather's! I think all the decorating happened with it belonged to his mother though, and while he's working to update some things now that he's it's caretaker, he's also trying to keep a lot of the original things and maintain the "feel" of the house as it is now!

I have knit sweaters and hats for years, but recently I have become fascinated with Knitted Knockers, an international group that makes breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomy. There are so many opportunities for knitted and crocheted things, it adds an extra level of satisfaction to the work.

I love wood fires, one thing I miss is heating our bottom half of our old farm house with a wood stove.
Although during that time (having to make sure there was enough wood on to last the night, or the feeling of chill early morning if it didnt make it through, or collecting enough wood from the outside pile to the insude pile hehehe what a chore.) which was bout 10-14 years ago, I would have been wishing I didn't have too.
Hahahah but now I miss the smell, the heat, the crackling and the glow, oh and the ability to have a simmering pot of anise and cinnamon sticks on top spreading holiday scents that comes with it.
Really enjoyed the video and hearing the crackling in the background!

I’ve been a crochet woman since I was taught in 4th grade, I’m now 31 and crochet all the time, there is never a time I don’t have one of several projects going at the same time. And having attempted to learn to knit several times decided it was something I would just never learn to do. I thought I’d never do it because I just didn’t not like it as much as crocheting. However, with that being said seeing this piece, this vest done and knowing all the history behind not just the vest but the socks and all sorts of other items being made for the many war efforts in the past has reignited my desire to try and learn how to properly knit. I also hope I can possibly make this amazing vest for myself in my size, and definitely for my grandfather who I know would absolutely appreciate one made from me for him. Thank you for sharing and for getting so detailed in the other video about the history of knitting in our world especially in those times of need.

I find it's often harder to learn a new skill when you are already so comfortable and fluid with another, similar skill - it's how I feel about learning to knit in other styles. I've tried, and each time I get frustrated at how slow it's going and how uneven my tension is, and just switch back to knitting in my normal style because it's just SO MUCH FASTER and more comfortable! But here's to hoping that this time will be the charm, and that you allow yourself the grace and time to be a novice at knitting, because if you stick with it, there's no choice but to improve and eventually master the skill! Glad you enjoyed the video, and happy holidays!

I have been searching and searching for a good knitting pattern for my bf, but good mens patterns are so hard to come by. Yesterday I thought I had it down to one from Subversive Femme, or I would just design my own, but this one is PERFECT. I was considering designing one similar using bavarian twisted stitches, but even better I have one already worked out for me. Yay!

I’ve always wanted to learn to knit, especially socks. I’m hard on my socks-the consequences of being ever on my feet, despite my bad knee. But, being bad at crochet I never worked up the courage to try knitting. Thank you for sharing! It came out very nicely.

My roommate just finished her first pair of socks (it was only her third knitting project ever, and her first one, a scarf from a few months back, definitely had a visible learning curve), but the socks look fantastic, and she's already starting in on her second pair, so I'd highly recommend giving knitting a try!

Of course! And they're really pretty good for vintage patterns - they have little gauge/tension notes, and instructions for some of the funkier stitches (although, like I said, most of the patterns just use the standard knit/purl stitches)!

It is a *crazy* fascinating topic, full of all these neat little historical tidbits, some amazing examples of knitwear (things knit in POW camps with barbed wire or cooking pot handles, for example) and just like the way that knitting permeated the national zeitgeist of both Canada and the US during both World Wars is so neat!
