- Sequential Prophet-12 synth demo featuring various sounds, patches & presets. This Prophet 12 demo showcases pads, leads, arpeggiators, bass, plucks, fx and more. The Prophet 12 demo was filmed at Sequential headquarters.
Sequential Prophet-12 is a flagship 12-voice, bi-timbral digital/analog synthesizer released by Sequential in 2013. It has 5 DSP-based oscillators per voice (saw, square, tri, sine + 12 selectable complex shapes), 3 noise types (white, pink, red), analog filter & VCAs, cross mod (FM/AM) and linear FM and hard sync.
The Prophet 12 boasts a unique character section with five digital effects - girth, air, hack, decimate and drive - to shape sounds pre-filter. The Prophet 12 also has a Curtis 2 or 4-pole resonant analog LPF and 2-pole resonant HPF. Distortion, tuned feedback & four multi-delays are on-board as well.
The Sequential Prophet-12 has 4 loopable ADSR envelopes and 4 syncable LFOs, arpeggiator, and extensive 16-slot x2 mod matrix with 26 sources and 100 destinations.
With 50+ knobs & buttons and a 5-octave keyboard w/ velocity and aftertouch, the Sequential Prophet 12 gives you lots of hands-on control. MIDI In/OUT/THRU, USB, sustain/expression and dual audio outputs per layer provide lots of connectivity. Finally, there are 396 factory and 396 user slots for storing your patches.
The Sequential Prophet 12 remains one of the deepest synthesizers in terms of programming and sound design possibilities. The bi-timbral capabilities + vast mod-matrix provides ample room to create incredible patches with diverse sonic variety. As a hybrid synth it mixes both digital and analog music technologies in a single powerhouse synth and can do everything from traditional bread and butter sounds, to futuristic soundscapes and beyond.
Hope you enjoy this demo of the Sequential Prophet 12, and thanks to Dave Smith Instruments & Sequential for creating it.

When Dave Smith released the P12, he said it was his favorite synth he had ever made up to that point. Now, that is saying something. I heard that and bought it, and have never considered selling mine. It's quite powerful and unique, with an identity all its own, but still has that Prophet magic. With all its multi-dimensional sound-sculpting control, I don't know how on Earth people say they don't like how it sounds. I can make mine sound like just about anything. As your patches here aptly demonstrate as well. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yea, the P12 has so many sound design possibilities, it's pretty crazy to think about. Great to hear you are enjoy your P12 to this day!
I got the rack Prophet 12 and loved it. I sold mine in order to get the beautiful Arctic White Limited Edition Prophet 12 Keyboard. This is a synth that I came to by reviewing the Prophet-6, Prophet-5 and then the Oberheims, UDO Super-6 and Modal 002 (12 voice hybrid also). But after all that, my conclusion is that this truly is Dave Smith’s best work ever. People can chase the past and enjoy vintage but I look the future that Dave built into this, with 35 years of experience, and in his own words, his most favorite best synth ever. This synth is way under rated, and of course, it is not for the “preset” chasers out there - a real synth where you need to work on the sounds and you can make it highly personalized to you. Amazing instrument!
Yea, it's probably one of the most advanced synths Dave ever made. It's pretty mind blowing all the things it can do. It's very deep.
Love my Prophet 12, had it 8 years, produced soundpacks for it and this synth is still a fundanetal part of my set to this day
I'll be checking out your banks, checked out pricing and is very reasonable for the 2 packs.
Not many banks out for the P12, I am after pads, arps, sequencing, stuff you have covered.
EDIT I have heard your stuff before, it's great and was short listed.
Awesome, so great to hear you've been enjoying your P12. Will take a listen to your sound packs!
Dude!!!! Incredible. Can’t wait to plug mine in and play it!!!
Thanks man, good to hear from you! Hope you enjoy diving into your P12 again! :)
Im sorry but i don’t understand why some people don’t like this synths. It’s one of the best synths ever made and i will never sell mine. It was dave’s favorite.
U are the king of this synth!!!!
Thanks!
Beautiful sounding machine
Yes, it certainly sounds nice!
Vastly under rated synth. Sad they canceled so early ( compared to some folks )
It is very capable, one of the deepest synths avail. Guess they will be trading hands on the second-hand market going forward.
Some nice patches
I don’t get why 50% of the people say this is worst prophet but they say the rev 2 is the best. I had a rev 2 that I didn’t like and a prophet 5 that I loved. This sound a lot better than rev 2 and it modernizes a prophet 5 at least on UA-cam videos. I took the rev 2 back and ordered this. I think this will be a good replacement for my old prophet 5.
You saying that the P12 sounds ‘better’ than the Rev2, is as stupid as the comments about the P12 that you’re complaining about … 🙄😏👍🏼👍🏼
They’re both great synths, with different strengths and purposes.
@@kierenmoore3236 I get it now as I had a chance to own both of them. Your absolutely right. The rev 2 is a beast. It just on these youtube videos. The rev 2 was too dark and p12 was too bright. I got a change to run them in my own studio and wind up keeping the rev 2.
@@kierenmoore3236 LOL, I thought the same thing when I read the comment. Glad he came around. I love my REV 2!
@@Podus81 First time I’ve heard the REV 2 described as “too DARK”!! 😊 VCO, DCO, Hybrid … all great (not least, the Sequential offerings), all with their own strengths/purposes. 😎👍🏼
This thing has aged pretty well. I wanted one when they came out but ended up buying the last Poly Evolver keyboard my retailer had. I just yesterday picked up a used P12. Here's hoping it lives up to the hype (Dave's favourite/best synth etc etc). I'm really looking forward to trying out the HPF in combination with the LPF. Getting some of those Elka Synthex band pass tones isn't easy on my Prophet 08. Nice video thanks.
Thanks, hope you enjoy the P12. The Poly Evolver is also fantastic.
I bought my Prophet 12 in late 2013. I thought it was going to sound like a 12 voice Prophet 5 and it didn't quite have the vintage sound. I played around with it for a few weeks then put the P12 in it's box and on mothballs instead of returning it to the store because for some reason I knew I would return to it. Fast forward to late 2021 and I buy a new Rev 4 Prophet 10. Of course it sounds just like the original P5. So of course I pull the Prophet 12 out of an 8 year hiatus in it's box. It powers right up and is good to go. It was only then playing the 10 and 12 in a stack along with a Rev2 16 that I realize the power, potential and why Dave made the Prophet 12. It is extremely cool in it's own right and it also is a great controller for my Prophet 6 module I oddly found at a Salvation Army store here on Maui for a crazy price of $50 bucks because the store staff thought it was a broken old home stereo receiver ! The P6 works just fine. As you can tell I am a big DSI fan !!! Glad I held onto the P12. Throwing some chorus and echo on it from my old Roland RE-501 Chorus Echo puts it in "Holy Grail" synth territory!
Great story. The P12 is very capable and has a distinct sound, very futuristic at times. I think it's taken awhile for it to be understood. Also, congrats on the P6 module for $50, that's an amazing score!
Tengo un prophet 12 y suena increíble posibilidades infintas
Superb patches, wish I had the time to program mine so deep
Thanks for the kind words!
@@synth4ever and the skills obviously 🙂
Sounds almost oberheim like in a lot of these patches. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for watching and the comment!
Yeah, While not exactly as fat, the P12 is really good at mimicking old Oberheims. When you put a good Analog Stereo Chorus behind, it can also do this classic Elka Synthex Sounds.
Tomorrow will be mine
Congratulations!
Lol what timing, I rang my local synth guy today to make sure he puts away my P12 Module that I have been eyeing for 6 months, he never answered but I'll make sure he does.
P12 is such an underrated synth, does many many great things, all you need is an imagination.
Yea, the P12 has so much sound design possibilities and modulation, it's mind boggling! Enjoy your P12 when you get it!
Copped one months ago since they’re becoming hard to find. made nothing but heavy, darksynth, glitchy, and dubstep-like sounds on it. Perfect for that since it always wants to scream. But it sings too. I just wish it had more wavetables or ability to customize some via software. But regardless… P12 🔥🔥
Awesome! P12 is exceptionally versatile to this day.
On my P12, a lot of the ptches have confusing channel assignments for key depressions.
There’s something I’m curious about. I know that the late Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim designed the OB-6 together 2 or 3 years after the Prophet 12 was new. Was Oberheim somehow involved in the design of the P12? I’m thinking specifically of the modulation matrix, a feature more commonly associated with the Oberheim line than with Sequential (Circuits).
No idea but comprehensive mod matrixes were always a feature on DSI synths to my knowledge, all the way back to the Evolver
Thank you, @@synth4ever.
is it just me or why is it titled with "Sequencial" ? It is a "Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12"...... just my thoughts )
i need to grab my one and use it again. its covered in dust since forever! great amazing synth
You know I still haven't gotten it, things on the back burner but it's still available.
Somehow I keep returning to the P12, 15:16 is a perfect example why the P12 is beautiful.
It can definitely get lush, in it's own way. Hope you can grab it at some point.
God I wish these were still in production, I got into hardware a touch too late and just missed the boat on these, there’s none on the second hand market near me unless I want to pay the price of a used car to get it imported.
I did manage to try one for a week, and it was possibly my favourite synth, if I had one it might my only synth, or at least one of. I have 2-3 to get out what I got out of this.
I suppose there’s there’s the summit/peak these days but I didn’t find it as inviting, and that goes a long way, I think. Gone too soon I guess, hopefully they do a reissue, I’ll sell most of my gear to snag one.
If you are ok with the P12 module, it's a lot cheaper. Might be worth considering.
Regarding Summit, I just did a review on it with my thoughts -- check my channel.
Both are great synths with unique capabilities.
what would be your number one synth for futuristic sound design ?
That's tough. It would have to have an insane modulation matrix and probably be hybrid digital & analog oscillators, but there's not many synths like that I'm aware of (Poly Evolver of course, but only 4 voices). I'd probably say the Summit (digital osc + analog filters).
In the analog domain, Moog One or Andromeda A6.
@@synth4ever did you try the pro 3 ? with it's superb sequencer, mod matrix, wavetable osc and paraphony, it's really a sound design monster
@@burger659 Yes, I was thinking of polyphonic synths. Agreed, it is amazing. If polyphony is not a requirement Pro3 is an excellent choice.
A few others I'd certainly consider are Quantum/Iridium, Hydrasynth, Minifreak, and Polybrute.
@@synth4ever yes sure, i would not buy digital hardware synths only again because it can be achieved with software
Prophet-12 vs DeepMind 12 - how much better is it?
They are not even comparable imo, the P12 is Bi-timbral, the DM12 is not.
The DM12 is analog based on the Juno 106 which has weak oscillators and relies heavily on the FX section to make it shine, the P12 is digital with analog filters and can do much more than what the DM123 can do.
The DM12 can be confusing with the UI where as the P12's menu diving is pure genius.
I have a DM12D and am getting the P12 desktop, the 2 could not be further from each other and cost is double, comparisons is really not fair when the P12 is in a total different league.
I think they will compliment each other though.
@@dankeplace hmm, I've thought that P-12 has analog oscillators. Then they could be comparable at some points.
After a longer time of "pausing" synths (formerly there were some ... DW6000, Polysix, JP-8000, XP50, SY-85) I've restarted with a DM12. Compared to my older synths the DM12 sounds amazing. I agree that the FX polishes some patches but nevertheless a great synth for my restart. In the meanwhile the DM12 is gone and I´ve had to decide for a replacement. After getting a Peak I've had to choose between a P12 or a Summit. My choice was the Summit (as the Peak is such a great synth). I don't regret my decision ... the Summit is a fantastic synth with a great sound and big fun to create sounds and patches. Maybe underrated but absolutely worth to take a look at.
For clarification, the Sequential Prophet 12 is a 12 voice synth where each voice has 2 analog oscillators and 2 digital oscillators, plus an LFO per voice. So basically, if you take 5 oscillators per voice and multiply that by 12 voices you get a total of 60 oscillators. The Prophet 12 is bi-timbral so you can layer or split the keyboard into 2 separate 6 voice synths. It is an awesome synth that can be analog or digital, but combining both gives you an even richer and fuller synth sound.
@@garyturner5204 Ok, that's good ) But I'm not capable to buy this Prophet because of the price.
i'm between getting this an a novation summit
Tough choice! Both fantastic synths.
@@synth4ever the summit seems a little bigger sounding to me for ambient stuff and the prophet seems to be what you get when you want prophet sounds.
@@synthkatt If you want huge reverb on-board a synth, the Summit is king.
Sorry to tell, but you need both. Their sounds complement each other so well, someone described them like Cherries and a Vanilla Sauce 😂
Interesting to hear others call it underrated. Apart from its excellent UI, there are too many things for me to say I don't like. The keyboard is poor, the lack of range on FM (even when you add more via mod matrix), the envelopes (unless you modify them in the mod matrix)... It's quite possibly my least favorite synth I've owned apart from the AX80. Two seconds with the Poly Evolver and you know the P12 is much less impressive.
Nice demo though.
What’s your favorite? (I’m just curious)
Thanks for your insights as always. P12 certainly has a lot of features, sorry to hear you didn't gel with it.
Sadly, I don't own a PEK. I have the desktop version and the MEK. Truth be told, they sound beefier and more interesting than by beloved P12
@@Stadtkind32 those are some great synths! I’d love to try one someday. For now, I’m happy with the p12!
@@wiredbassclarinet Yeah, I love both the Evolver and the P12. if I had to choose only one of those? PolyEvolver hands down.
