    Thanks so much for this Joseph! The H14 will always be my favorite Hobie Cat. Its reputation as being pitchy is undeserved. In real heavy air I rake the mast all the way back and travel out to the corner casting. This makes for a super stable boat, even in big swells…

    I was just experimenting today on tweaking the trim on both sails using the telltales to try to get more speed. I was hoping that I would be able to get less hull raising and more forward momentum by adjusting the shape of the sails. Didn't have much luck though, there was just too much wind to get the windward tales to fly back, instead they were flying up. Wind was 14 gusting to 21 kn, solo at 75kg.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  2 роки тому

      Best quick improvement is to loosen the rig tension and crank the downhaul.
      When it's windy you can't get the windward telltales flying on the main solo.

      James Conger on YT just released an incredible 30 minute video recapping the physics of how sails function using visual cfd models.
      Once you see how those force vectors translate through the airfoil it will make a lot more sense with what's going on. I've yet to find a better (not so) crash course on the physics and reasoning behind sail trim.
      Cat or monohull sail physics are the same, main only versus main and jib do change things but you'll get the gist.

    • @stevenvachon9745
      @stevenvachon9745 2 роки тому

      @@otm646 thanks, will have a look at it. There is quite a bit of in depth teaching on sail trim on YT. I think the only factor limiting what you can do on a small catamaran is often there is too much power (you will end up capsizing if you don't depower) so tweaking the sails is unnecessary passed a point. I will be interested in seeing if James Conger demonstrates how sail trim and shape can provide more forward momentum. Thanks again. 👍

    • @JoyriderTV

      No, it's been working well, just an issue with mast over rotating but that's due to the mast base being worn

  • @frankjohnson8750
    @frankjohnson8750 2 роки тому

    Do you have anything in the old B class, ie 20' length, 10' beam and aprx 235 sq ft of sail, non-foiling cat?
    Also, why would you NOT want to install a mast float on a cat? Is it because they might cost a couple beans? Seems to me, that cost can't be as much as having to replace a bent mast, after inverting in chop and beating the mast head on the bottom.
    Lol pitchpole is why I don't like the Hobie 14. WAY 2 easy to stick the bows 😆 🤣 I even stay away from the 16s 😜. I never stuck the bows in on my old Prindle 18, though I got close a few times, usually when surfing the breakers on the east coast. To me, going from Hobie 16 to Prindle 18 was the bees knees / top of the line FUN and SO seaworthy, in comparison, especially in heavy seas.
    I live in Florida on the west coast. I could even take the Prindle over to the east coast and FLY in 4-6 foot seas 🤣 FUN! I miss that Prindle 😥

      Hi Frank,
      yes, I have a Tornado which was originally B class.
      I was going to reply to your mast float question in the next Q+A but here is why not on some boats:
      On the catamarans that we use in strong winds frequently, we want the boats to invert if capsized for a period of time (we sail in very deep water)
      The reason is, if the boat is on it's side with a mast float, it will go much faster downwind that anyone cat swim so the risk of serious man overboard is significant.
      We have risk assessed this against the risk of entrapment and we feel that the frequency of potential MOB is so great that we don't fit floats to our performance boats.
      On the 14 here there is a float - that's because it capsizes such a lot and inverts quickly due to the shorter mast.

      @@JoyriderTV ok 👌 great reasons, thanks
      Hope I didn't lose my 15mins of fame 😐, what, with my question going on the Q&A show lol 😃
      And I thought you all had a Tornado or 2 lying around. Thats my vote for next speed test, something for me to shoot at on my Mystere. 😁
      The first time I got caught under the main after a capsize, is when I learned how valuable a good DEEP inhale is on the way over. Was pretty scary, for sure. Had to concentrate "do not panic! Just swim down a bit and out". Trying to get the sail pushed up off the water was pretty impossible because of the vacuum created. Lol 😬 oops. It really got scary 😳 for a min., wasted time! Maybe a tip for a future 'tips' episode?

      I weighed the pros and cons of using an m/a float and have decided not to use one in spite of the lake I sail in is quite shallow for a long distance out before it surpasses 28 ' in depth. Only once have I gotten close to turtleing and as soon as I realized it was happening, I moved to the bow of the hull and prevented the mast from going down. I think it would take an effort to turtle a 16 with a sealed mast, maybe it is just my luck. Besides, I just don't need any more weight to pull up to right the boat.
