This year I had the greatest lawn and did over seeding in the fall. Working remote and from home gave me the ability to do exactly as you say. I over seeded in late August and had fantastic results. I watched every video on your channel this year and your advice was so valuable. My lawn in the cool fall looks like a plush green carpet.
A very good summary. I redid my 8000 sq ft lawn (eastern Washington) last summer, huge job. Seeded and turned on water. I was mowing in 3 weeks and it looks amazing. Just seeded neighbors lawn a week ago, way too late, nothing coming up yet and we are getting into 30s at night so it will be interesting to see how well it does over the winter. Thanks for the great video.
I used prodiamine this season at a half rate so I could overseed in the fall. It worked wonderfully for the spring/early summer weed suppression, and I still successfully overseeded in Sept.
I'd throw in one more suggestion. If you're (over)seeding in a lawn with a lot of trees, you might be better off doing your seeding in the early spring instead of the fall. You'll have to put in a little more work in terms of watering, and you might have to top-dress it with peat moss to keep the spring storms from washing the seed away, but the big advantage is getting some significant sun to the freshly germinated seedling before the trees fill in. I kept trying to seed in the fall and had bad results in several places and the common denominator was they were all shady places. Did a spring seeding, and had much better success.
I used tenacity for the first time with my seed this year. I agree, my fescue turned white in some areas but it only lasted about a week. The thing I didn't know was that the grass germinating could also come up white! At first I thought I had a fungus problem, but after about a week it two turned back to green
Thanks for the tips, in this video and the others. I have been doing the lawn prep for fall, and now I have snow! My grass is dark green, short, and tidy. Should be ready for spring. Lawn went from weed-heaven to best lawn in a 3 block radius in a few months, thanks to the info from this channel. ✌️
Great video. I've commented on so many negative posts for the Zenith Zoysia seller site where people are blaming the grass seed as being bad when we know 99% of it was improper watering or other user error. One guy went so far as to say he screened all the top soil he put down over the soil he prepped using 1/4 inch mesh, but yet you still see plenty of rocks and twigs throughout. I put down 5,000 sq. ft. of Zoysia seed later in the season than I should have and still the only issue I had with germination was where I thought the cheap sprinklers would last through germination, but one failed, and I replaced it with another and it failed so needless to say that seed bed dried out and 90% of the seed didn't survive, but the rest of the lawn did great. People blame all the weeds that pop up on weed filled grass seed, which after your Bahrenburg trip video, that is very rare. And even if you do have a little weed seed in the grass seed you buy, it won't matter because you still need to kill the weeds that germinated from your soil. Animals carry weed seed to your lawn, wind will too, as well as birds eating weed seed then pooping the seeds out in your lawn. I think the best way to avoid weed seeds is to remove the top 2 inches of soil using a SOD cutter. That worked great for me and gave me room to level my lawn while bringing it back up a little without messing with the original grade of my lawn, but that's too much work to do otherwise. I don't care how young or old you are, shoveling that much top soil is back breaking...thankfully I found someone that had a small farm tractor that picked the soil up for free in trade for the soil. :0) I may share this link the next time I see people complaining that they are perfect and the seed failed. :0)
Really appreciate your comment Noneya. Seed failure is commonly due to lack or improper use of water during the germination stage. I too have had the same experience of listening to sooo many people talk about this. However, some species of seed takes forever to germinate, like bermuda. 7 months on average if you're not chemically forcing it.
A big thanks from the other side of the Atlantic!! My lawn was in horrible shape in the spring/early summer this year..it was only one year old but was full of crabgrass and just week overall (very thin..). It was watching your videos that I learned how to bring it back from the dead.. Its now (said by the neighbors) the best lawn they see in this town.. It took A LOT of work but it paid of realy nice. Its just unfortunate that most of the herbicides that you mention are not available here.. Once again, thanks for the knowledge that you shared!
There was a power outage and I forgot to reset my sprinklers. This was about 10 days into overseeding. Nothing seemed to grow. It makes sense though. It got no water for 1 day and dried out. This was in Late May. Did not know that was so crucial. Another great video keep it up!
Couldn’t agree more. Life saver, and I hate going back to visit the 1970s with that cord. I actually used mine to level out high soil during my renovation.
I concur on the SunJoe for dethatching. I used to use the rake and it took so long and never was as thorough as the SunJoe in getting rid of thatch. And then the scarifier is a great bonus. I am seeing the seed germinating sooner in the furrows created by the scarifier than in the flat areas where no furrow was created. So that SunJoe is worth the money, and the cord is just a small nuisance when you consider the reward.
This video was fantastic! I am so stoked for next year’s improvement! I haven’t been able to find why you like Sun Joe over the Greenworks. Both of your videos about them seemed positive.
How do you water 3-5 times a day when you work? I have an 8400 sq. ft. lawn and one oscillating sprinkler. That works out to five zones due to the layout. I'm gone 7:30-4 every weekday. Is there a way to do this without an irrigation system?
I just seeded my backyard (dirt lot) which is clay and has never had grass on it. I was able to install sprinklers but right now it’s probably at 50% grass in random parts. What advise would you have? Would this take years to grow since there is only 1 layer of compost on from when i seeded?
Well I believe that our turf season is hibernating until spring, we got over 8/10” of snow here in Lakeville mn,which is very early for October, got everything done prior to the snow ❄️ awesome videos and awesome info
I'm not trying to tell you what to do but please feel free to read my messages above and check out hybrid seed. I got a Hybrid Bermuda Seed and I been loving it since 07.
lol @9:03 hopefullly that's before application. after weed control application and weed die, do you need to pluck them out? or you leave it as compost?
Perfect timing with this video ginja!! I'm on week 4 of my reseeding. I used tenacity but now moss is going crazy on my lawn. I'm going to wait after I mowe 3x before hitting with tenacity again.
@@pestandlawnginja I learned a lot from watching your videos and take great pride on how great our lawn looks now thanks to you! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge😎
Hey Yooow Ninja! Giving you some California Love from the Central Valley... It’s been 90 degrees and scorching in October and I had to wait before overseeding. Thanks for the information and I am patiently waiting for the seed to sprout this week. Keep up the great content my friend.
I planted a NEW lawn yesterday. I laid grass seed and covered it with a 1/2" or so of soil+fertilizer. I live in the PNW and we are experiencing a cold snap, near freezing at night, but dry. I decided to hold off on watering until the weather warms a bit which should be in another day or two. Is it detrimental to the seed to lay in the ground for a few days without water? Will the freezing dry air hurt the seed? Again, this seed has never been watered.
If you just laid the seed and you haven't watered it and started the germination process you'll be totally fine to leave it there for a few days. what you don't want to do is water for a week then let it dry out. The freezing temps, I find help the germination process. couldn't tell you why.
i have the same problem every year. new grass takes off great!! (LOOKS INCREDIBLE) then it rains like hell for weeks and my new grass lays over and rots!! i try and fluff it up with a leaf blower. but my heavy tree canopy wont ever let the yard dry out. any suggestions ?? other than spending 8000 having 12 giant oaks taken out of my yard. that would be about 1/2 of my oaks. 40,000 sq. ft. of grass. on a huge hill. live in VA.
Interesting. I'd be interested in getting a soil sample and testing for high's and lows of trace nutrients to see if that's the issue. if you were super low in potassium and phosphorus that could be the problem. Also be sure that you're using a shade tollerent variety under those trees.
Thanks for the Tenacity mention! Have a rocked area with weed fabric underneath that I still weed out by hand foxtails! Woot woot I do not care to hand weed! Is it safe for dogs?
Hey man great video - do you personally overseed in the spring and fall? I know preemergents have their place, but my thinking is the best way to prevent weeds is by having more grass. I’m in CT and I’m considering overseeding 2 times a year do you have any thoughts?
The majority of my lawn is kentucky bluegrass that creeps and spreads naturally. for the majority of my lawn I don't overseed other than fall time just for fun. However, my backyard I've been seeding spring and fall due to the massive amount of shade. recently purchased mazama kentucky bluegrass which is a more shade tolerant grass type and its helping tremendously. Pre emergents are a great way to prevent weeds. they are non descriminatory so they will also prevent new grass seed from growing as well. the only exception to that is a product called tenacity. tenacity as a standalone is not a great pre emergent and I don't recommend people use it that way.
Thanks for the video. I actually just did this combo of herbicides (Tenacity/Speedzone) to try and kill wild violet and I’m having a hell of a time here in eastern PA. Any suggestions brother? I cannot allow this weed to out slay me. Thanks!
What sprinkler heads are they using in the video? I have some rainbirds that I do not like and do not get even coverage. They do not get close to the head very well. Currently using the rotary ones for larger area.
Great informative video Ginja. I have similar issues to your overseeding where some grass didn't come up everywhere I put seed. What you will do if anything to address the larger bare dirt areas in your own overseeding project? If you plan to reseed when or what conditions in Utah are you looking for in soil temps ect? Thanks for teaching us!
if the seed that I through down germinates this fall, which i'm hopeful I may think about doing a dormant seeding on thanksgiving and let it overwinter.
@@pestandlawnginja Oh that is good news, it still might germinate. Are you still keeping the soil moist in those areas like at the beginning to enable germination? My temperature currently is 19 degrees. Are there things I can do to protect the baby grass? I read I should be keeping the soil moist as an insulation and protection from cold damage. I haven't watered for several days and this morning I see the soil is dry where there is only new seedlings but where there is older grass it is still moist. Should I hand water those few dry bare soil areas?
If I’m 9 days into my overseed project (TTTF), and already see where I’m going to be having bare spots, should I go ahead and try to take care of that now or wait two weeks to allow the baby seed to grow first?
This is one of the best videos I've seen explaining Tenacity & overseeding. Here's my question: If Speedzone doesn't work well for warm grasses (I have centipede grass here in NC), what do you suggest as a post emergent (to go along with Tenacity) for crabgrass and other tough to get rid of weeds? Thanks, Kristy 😊
Any basic herbicide should work. As long as you put tenacity and the other herbicide together in water and they don't gum and coagulate up you're good to go.
Loved the video as it answered some questions and it's great to see the update on how your reseeding is going. My Scotts Turf Builder DLX spreader broke. I know you love Spyker broadcast spreaders which are outside of my budget. Are there any spreaders you'd recommend that are $125 or less for a 5k lawn? You mentioned pre-emergents but I don't recall you ever using one on your yard except maybe the flower bed video. What are your thoughts on them and if you use them is it as effective and more economical to get them as a component of your fertilizer or separate?
my opinion on pre emergents........... they have a place and time for sure. they set you up for the future and not for your past. if you had active weed seeds germinating it won't do anything about that. It sets the tone for the future when you apply them due to the fact they disrupt weed seed germination. I personally don't use them often on my own lawn. not using them helps the roots establish better. Since I have bluegrass I keep the grass thick and it helps. I did get bit a little with poa this season which is a big bummer so you'll see me use a pre emergent next season.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks for the information on negative root affect. Are pre-emergents equally effective as an additive in IFA's 1st step or best as a stand alone app? Any thoughts on budget spreaders as I can't afford the Spyker spreader you linked? The Scotts DLX has been decent lasting 15 years without any issues. Believe you may have used one on a lawn reseeding renovation you did a year ago. If so, what's your opinion on the Scotts DLX as you use spreaders professionally? DLX spread pattern isn't perfectly even. Has a little less distance on the right hand side but maybe all spreaders are that way. Hope you are enjoying Hawaii with optimal weather!
My brother, I love your videos but about 15 years ago I bought a Hybrid Bermuda Seed from a Seed Company here where I live. They told me to water it every other day or something like that and it grew in unbelievably amazing.
@@pestandlawnginja long story short, I'm paralyzed and I had my amazing Uncle Fred till 100% of the front and back yard. So it was 99.9 dirt with stragglers very few and far between. I vaguely remember the top of the dirt being dry and I don't really remember the details very clearly. I just really remember thinking we didn't water enough because it wasn't raining. I was tickled pink 3 or 4 weeks later and I remember Mike across the street wanting to do what we did because he and I was weed city before I done it or done what I could portion. Stupid question, is Liquid Aeration a gimmick? If you want to know why I asked, I'll spill the beans.
I suck at watering, and just have a lousy old fan sprinkler to do it with ....but somehow made it thru our long late hot drought(delaying overseeding a bit too long), revived some dormant rye and fescue areas in cracked hard earth(kept my kbg green tho, but a truck drove way off the street thru the yard leaving runts and taking out my mailbox, and 100mph winds left piles of trees in the grass killing big spots), and got some new seeds to sprout(but obviously did have a lot of too wet/dry seed falure) ....maybe 2021 I'll get more help from the weather, but this last year was just all over the place with no rhyme or reason to any of the natural precipitation and random temps plus added damage - that all made it hard and extra work, but I think I made good progress for the year despite everything; altho it will actually be nice to take a break from, and just do snow for awhile
cold weather. hmmmm..... if you have bermuda grass that you want cool season grass to thrive with i would choose the barenbrug turf blue pro hgt. the hgt has kentucky bluegrass barvette which is a very aggressive form of bluegrass. it will sit dormant below the bermuda through the extreme hot temps then spring into action early to late fall. If you want one grass to rule them all I'd go with rtf tall fescue for your area. its a wider blade grass but has good color and is fairly tolerant to drought conditions.
I've never tried that combo. be sure to do a compatibility test first if you try it. if you mix the two together in small doses and they turn to cottage cheese that's not a good sign.
Great video ninja, I have tall fescue and my grass is only 5 weeks old and I already cut it once, but I'm noticing that 60% of all my lawn is laying over, I cut it 4" tall, at 4 1/2 weeks old and for the most part the lawn looks like a comb over. Lol. Any idea of what I might have done wrong.
If its that young keep it at 2". let the grass thicken up. may need an additional overseed to fill it in if you don't have an rtf fescue like barenbrug produces.
I did a complete renovation, everyone said to cut it at 4", I also think that I might have over watered it because I'm seeing a bit of fungus, Im using scotts anti fungus and bio advance liquid, should I lower it to 2"?
I overseeded a few weeks ago and we've been getting a lot of rain since then, clay and soggy soil. I did a good lawn sweeping before hand and a few good ones during the summer so debris was minimal and I did an aeration of the lawn too. Week two I thought I was seeing sprouts come from the holes poked but who knows, hopefully the feed took as I dumped about 75 lbs on about 13000 square feet so it was a little spendy
@@pestandlawnginja Damp it's been kept, I haven't had to water as here the temperatures have been hovering around 10 Celsius really haven't gotten above 15, and we've had rain pretty much every day. The one thing that concerned me was not being able to see the seeds on the bare spots when I looked about 4 or 5 days after I seeded. Worried me that while I was at work the birds had a feast, though when I would look I never really saw any

Ginja, this past summer my lawn took a turn for the worse. Hundreds of tiny piles of earth, maybe two or three ounces each appeared over the course of the season. After considerable research, determined that the cause is earthworms. This causes the ground to become uneven and unsightly . Then, to make things worse, it appears that some larger critters are feasting upon the worm castings at night. In so doing, it brings more attention to the piles since they tend to tear the surrounding grass around the piles while foraging. Are you familiar with this? Your recommendations and suggestions greatly appreciated.
Well first you should know earth worms are beneficial to soil health, they contribute to thatch breakdown and add micro nutrients to the soil. Most amazing tho, they are constantly horizontally aerating your lawn making tunnels as they do their daily thing. Now as far as the surface craters they can create, that happens when the soil is completely saturated past 4-5 inches deep, where the worms hang out. All their tunnels flood and the worms can’t breath and don’t wanna drown, so they surface in a panic leaving the eruption mounds you described. Next, those mounds left at the surface are like fast food signs for everything that eats worms, from raccoons to birds to skunks, so whatever is in the area like that is attracted there and some of them critters can destroy a lot of turf in their haste for dinner. Pretty much you don’t want to get rid of worms because they are good and without poising the soil you really can’t anyway. To prevent the problems you described you should keep the area from flooding out or even getting saturated past 3 inches deep. Then no worms break the surface panicked going top speed, they stay unnoticed by skunks and such, below the surface silently working for you, and then you don’t attract the worm eating critters to your turf tearing it up. Hope that makes sense and helps.
@@jaxturner7288 Thank Jax. Yes, i do agree. Your assessment appears to be spot on. I do know that the first few months of summer were wetter than most and that is most likely what caused the issue. Next year I will keep a better eye on the moisture content to determine when the irrigation comes on. Some systems actually have the ability to read the moisture content of the soil as a way to determine when watering should be done. Next year, I will try to only water the absolute minimum I can ... though I have no control over mother nature. I would like to know what the critters are that feed on the mounds. Also, if there was any way to mitigate the damage that they (not the worms) cause ... Thanks again for taking the time.
@@ronturnbull2786 it depends on what is native to your area. If you’re in the states you should have a local wildlife resource officer that could answer most of your questions over the phone, because they are intimately familiar with your particular local wildlife. Shooting from the hip while I’m standing in the northeast US, because they are ninja like and you never see them or smell them (like skunks) plus the extensive damage, I’d bet confidently on raccoons. Whatever the case, n again if you’re in the US, your local animal control and the local wildlife resource officer can place traps and relocate (whatever)to a less populated area. I know you asked for a preventative measure and that is only corrective tho so all I really got for ya is make the area less hospitable to the critters, motion activated lights and domesticated animals in the area are usually effective for nocturnal critters like raccoons and skunks. Motion activated sprinklers will deter most all fury pests-as long as it’s not the dry season or in a dry climate, obviously then it will attract everything. If you live on the edge of a million acres of wooded state land with a breeding population of (whatever) sometimes we can’t win and just need to accept the local wildlife behavior the way it is. Good luck. Ps if you decide to diy The 24 inch live traps on eBay for around $35 work good if you’re sure it’s not a cougar, coyote or fox. Use chocolate, grapes and Doritos to avoid accidentally attracting and trapping domestic animals. Never EVER use meat, cheese or domestic animal food. Microwaving a Reeses peanut butter cup 15 seconds on a paper plate n throwing it in one those traps has been extremely effective for raccoons around here. They can smell it from far away and come quickly and excited, sometimes more than one at a time. That bait doesn’t bring stray cats and squirrels around tripping the cages like meat and dog food will. 👊
I agree with Jax. Earth worms are highly beneficial and the best thing you can do is modify your watering schedule. common critters that go after earthworms are moles. they make large mounds of dirt with not visible hole in the middle.
Hi...I put down some Perennial Rye Seeds and waited about 3 weeks and then I sprayed certain areas of my lawn with Hydro Mousse and now I'm noticing, baby Shamrocks and mushrooms. Will you please tell me if that is normal or not?...and what to do, here in Michigan.
mushrooms are totally normal. its from overwatering, which you have to do in the seeding process. once the seed germinates you'll need to back of the watering to get rid of the mushrooms.
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you very much for responding. That is exactly what I have been doing...I receive your advice...I appreciate you, take care!: )👍👍🙏❤
Can you please do a video on what preemergent we can use if we compost our grass clippings for the garden. Prodiamine 65 WDG the label say not to let animals graze on the grass after using and it doesn't include a time when its safe for animals to eat.. doesn't sound like something to put in your compost pile that goes in the food garden. Please lead us to go green.
cornmeal is your only option but highly debateable if it actually works.. the labels are designed to protect themselves. If you let the grass completely dry out the herbicides fail. dithiopyr was designed to bond with the soil and not the grass. same thing with prodiamine. after a few mows the pre emergents are gone. They are not taken up systemically by the grass.
now that I have a 80% Ginga yard i want to really kill those pesky Poa Anua and a bit of spurge. I really dont have that much of a weed issue but if I can prevent 1 quack seedling it is worth it. Being a ginga requires premergent me thinks. Maybe even in the fall and spring. ...
@@elkskiutah8204 tenacity mixed with t-zone. links in the bio. slays both those weeds! I prefer to use dithiopyr if its in the budget if you have had a history of weeds
test the ph. I've seen it do some funky things when the city was doing similar treatments. turned a lot of lawns florescent green. It may affect seed germination. if the water is too acidic it will affect seed germination.
yes we do! the product active ingredient for control is sulfentrazone / carfentrazone and triclopyr . hits it fast. I'm dying to get in the stores in the UK so I can better assist you.
@@pestandlawnginja Onion Grass is spreading in my lawn and digging it out is proving to be an impossible task... it just comes back with a vengeance. Can't seem to find anything in the UK that will tackle it without killing the lawn as well.
i used the tenacity on my yard and I wondered how much crappy seed I had in my yard because a lot of areas turned white, some spots way more than others....it took a few weeks for the clover to turn white but it eventually curled up
check out weedalert.com first things first is to identify the weed. ultimately Celcius is a great product to use for weed control on bermuda lawns but its also expensive. always check the label first to make sure the target weed is listed. bermuda lawns require a few different herbicides due to the massive variety of weeds that creep in. amzn.to/3dSLLc1
Hot dog Ginga I see you’ve moved into pyschic powers. This video totally speaks to me. Soon as I overseed here comes the dang weeds uninvited. Last year I oopsified my wisdom by getting angry and spraying whatever I could find but it killed my new seedlings and there went an $80 bag of Jonathan Green seed. Can you say doh? This year I did a process called power seeding and I have a great germination rate. The weeds are there so I’m going to attack them in another two weeks from now and cut my lawn. World hear me out when I tell ya the Lawn Ginja knows his shit like the Ty D Bol man!!
How about “dormant seeding” in the late fall/ winter to get new grass the following spring. That would be a good video. Little tongue in cheek, you can come up to my lawn film a before then come back in the spring for the after.
I re seeded in the Spring with Barenburg. July & August 100 degrees torched some areas. I just sent last two weekends improving sprinkler coverage for next year. I’m going to aerate on Halloween and make a bed for those Barenburg KGB. If it doesn’t work I still have 30 pounds of seed in the Spring.
interesting. I couldn't tell you why. Usually when the weeds aren't dying its a sign that the herbicide either.... 1. didn't stick to the weed properly or 2. the application rate wasn't correct bermuda is listed on the label as having adverse reactions to the active ingredient. no surprise the lawn reacted badly. glad to hear it recovered.
If I put seed down for over seeding and it snows one or two days later after spreading will it kill the seeds? I still want to try and get it this fall. Aerated very heavy several different directions plenty of plugs exposed and holes. Or should I wait for Spring and put down a good winter fertilizer? Thx!
You may lose up to 30% if the seed begins to germinate then freezes. I havent had any issues in the past if it has a hard frost directly after I seeded. I wouldn't stress
Grass seed takes surprisingly a large amount of watering to germinate.... it's better to find a rainy week when you have at least 3 days of consecutive rainy days and seed the lawn before and continue watering after.
Yeah, that would be nice, but temperatures are also a factor; you have to get that seed growing when the temperature is in the proper range, and there might be no rain coming - so be prepared to water A LOT.
It’s crazy that grass seems to go absolutely everywhere naturally if left untreated, but if you lay down millions of seeds it isn’t as straight forward
If you’re gonna Over seed you’re gonna do it in the fall and in the fall time you’re really not gonna get a lot of weeds to pop up unless they were already there
This is back-breaking work, especially for a 54 year old guy whos had spinal surgery, so now im on my second attempt at trying to get my lawns grown in my yard, THE BIRDS, THE BIRDS, EVERY BIRD IN THE WORLD IS DESTROYING MY YARD!!!! IVE TRIED EVERYTHING BUT A NET (WHICH IS EXPENSIVE AND INSANE) AND JUST ALL OUT DEADLY POISON!!!!! So now what???
Is the seeding rate way too high in the video? a fist full should cover around 1m2 but the video shows two handsfuls in a tiny patch and thats not even covering the enitire patch.
I haven’t watched this video in a while but there is a clip or two with too much seed. There should be space between the seeds. Most seeds after germination will clump outward
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks for the reply. I'm never sure how much seed to put down. I started drop spreading and weighing it out. Last year I did it by eye and it resulted in what you said. Looked amazing for a month and then died off and rotted.

That is awesome! Appreciate the support Charles! Keep slaying that lawn!
Great video. I always watch the full video when Ginja puts one out. Nobody explains the process better than him. :)
I appreciate that! Thanks for the support!
@@pestandlawnginja Agree! with Stripeman. BTW, how do you guys get those fancy stripes down there in Utah?
A very good summary. I redid my 8000 sq ft lawn (eastern Washington) last summer, huge job. Seeded and turned on water. I was mowing in 3 weeks and it looks amazing. Just seeded neighbors lawn a week ago, way too late, nothing coming up yet and we are getting into 30s at night so it will be interesting to see how well it does over the winter. Thanks for the great video.
Right on! I've had good luck with seed germinating late. most likely not a lost cause.
I'VE SWWN A TON OF VIDS ON THIS .....YOURS IS THE MOST DIRECT ; COMPLETE AND WELL ROUNDED VIDEO I'VE SSEN . THANK YOU SIR 💪
You are very welcome. Thanks for the feedback
From a fellow Utah turf lover...Sick video bro! Keep em coming.
Appreciate it!! More to come!
Ginja never disappoints thanks for the lawn lessons. Time to get lawn of the year award🤫😁
rad! Thanks for the feedback Phillip! Slay that Lawn!!!
I used prodiamine this season at a half rate so I could overseed in the fall. It worked wonderfully for the spring/early summer weed suppression, and I still successfully overseeded in Sept.
Awesome!
Love the feedback AJ. There are pros and cons to both for sure!
I used tenacity for the first time with my seed this year. I agree, my fescue turned white in some areas but it only lasted about a week. The thing I didn't know was that the grass germinating could also come up white! At first I thought I had a fungus problem, but after about a week it two turned back to green
super funky right!? it can feel kinda scary watching it all go white.
Glad to help! Love hearing that you slayed that lawn Mitch! Keep going!
Once again you nailed it!! Thanks again for taking the time to teach the DIY folks such as myself. 👊👊👊👊👊

Love hearing this Mauricio! made my day. nice job slaying that lawn!
There was a power outage and I forgot to reset my sprinklers. This was about 10 days into overseeding. Nothing seemed to grow. It makes sense though. It got no water for 1 day and dried out. This was in Late May. Did not know that was so crucial. Another great video keep it up!
Thanks light! sorry to hear about the lawn seed not germinating. that can be very frustrating.
Sunjoe dethatcher has been a life saver. Cord is a pain but it sure does make for quicker work vs that old rake that just sits in the garage now.
Amen about the cord! Still better than the cordless greenworks
Couldn’t agree more. Life saver, and I hate going back to visit the 1970s with that cord. I actually used mine to level out high soil during my renovation.
Rad!
Very helpful Ginja, its like going to lawn University 😀 🚜📖🎓
😁 Rad! Thanks for watching!

Is there a way to do this without an irrigation system?
get an irrigation timer. they sell battery operated ones that attach to the hose bib. work fantastically.
I'll try it next time I overseed! Thank you.
Thanks for the tips man your lawns is looking quite awesome.
Thanks Jeffery! Appreciate you watching
I just seeded my backyard (dirt lot) which is clay and has never had grass on it. I was able to install sprinklers but right now it’s probably at 50% grass in random parts. What advise would you have? Would this take years to grow since there is only 1 layer of compost on from when i seeded?
I'd re seed. most cool season grasses don't creep. its best to seed and fill in the gaps.

Here in Riverton, UT. Secondary water will be available May 1st. I plan on overseeding, is it too late to put down a weed killer?
not too late. you'll need to spot water your dry spots.

Thanks for the Tenacity mention! Have a rocked area with weed fabric underneath that I still weed out by hand foxtails! Woot woot I do not care to hand weed! Is it safe for dogs?
most of the side effects are from direct product contact as it is wet and drying. other than that don't let your dog consume the chemical.
Thanks!
you'll need t-zone for wild violet, its the triclopyr that helps push it through fast.
What sprinkler heads are they using in the video? I have some rainbirds that I do not like and do not get even coverage. They do not get close to the head very well. Currently using the rotary ones for larger area.
If memory serves me right they are rainbirds
Love the videos Ginja! Is that Allett Reel you are using? I’m thinking of getting one.
Yes it is! So far so good on the Allett train. its a good mower.
Good tips man... do the doing.. not guessing.. love the compost spreader too
Thanks 👍 You are spot on! Lawn Slayers 4 Life!
Great video, thank you so much for that information!! I'm already planning spring, as we are already snow covered in central MN. :(
Glad it was helpful!
If I’m 9 days into my overseed project (TTTF), and already see where I’m going to be having bare spots, should I go ahead and try to take care of that now or wait two weeks to allow the baby seed to grow first?
I would seed the trouble spots now for sure
It can work that way as long as the evaporation rate is low and the seed doesn't dry out
@@pestandlawnginja long story short, I'm paralyzed and I had my amazing Uncle Fred till 100% of the front and back yard.
My man! Sounds like a great lawn journey and opportunity to slay that lawn! Keep going, you'll do great
What grass seed would be best for cold weather in Arlington Texas? Thanks in advance
cold weather. hmmmm..... if you have bermuda grass that you want cool season grass to thrive with i would choose the barenbrug turf blue pro hgt. the hgt has kentucky bluegrass barvette which is a very aggressive form of bluegrass. it will sit dormant below the bermuda through the extreme hot temps then spring into action early to late fall. If you want one grass to rule them all I'd go with rtf tall fescue for your area. its a wider blade grass but has good color and is fairly tolerant to drought conditions.
Can you use Syngenta Tenacity Turf Herbicide with Bayer Celsius Herbicide WG for Post-emergent weed control on St. Augustine grass?
I've never tried that combo. be sure to do a compatibility test first if you try it. if you mix the two together in small doses and they turn to cottage cheese that's not a good sign.
Warm season grass guy, but man great video!
Thanks for watching and commenting!

As long as you focus on proper watering and keep it damp for 3 weeks it'll do fine!

What’s your opinion (if any) on the Barenbrug “residential” seed on their website “Schultz” brand !?????
I’d use the Barenbrug support and ask how it compares. I’ve never had the pleasure
Good luck.
Ps if you decide to diy
The 24 inch live traps on eBay for around $35 work good if you’re sure it’s not a cougar, coyote or fox.
Earth worms are highly beneficial and the best thing you can do is modify your watering schedule. common critters that go after earthworms are moles. they make large mounds of dirt with not visible hole in the middle.
thanks for responding jax!
Excellent explanation!
Thank you!

Just FYI, anyone with hard clay like me can water 3-4x a day for about 20-30 minutes. I did in in spring this year and it’s growing strong!
Caveat: I threw down about a half inch of top soil/sand mix, found that about a yard of each is sufficient for 1000 sq ft.
proper watering will account for 90% of your success!
Maybe even in the fall and spring. ...

My water softener has a mix of chlorine bleach and caustic soda to make it potable. Will this be harmful to germinating grass?
test the ph. I've seen it do some funky things when the city was doing similar treatments. turned a lot of lawns florescent green. It may affect seed germination. if the water is too acidic it will affect seed germination.
Do you have an issue with Onion Grass in the States (I'm in the UK) and if so, how do you deal with it?
yes we do! the product active ingredient for control is sulfentrazone / carfentrazone and triclopyr . hits it fast.
What should I use to kill the dandelions and clover’s after I have over seeded it’s been a month since I over seated.
If you have cool season grass tenacity is your limited option for how far out you are in the process
@@pestandlawnginja awesome. Do I cut real low then apply tenacity or it doesn’t matter the height of the grass.
i used the tenacity on my yard and I wondered how much crappy seed I had in my yard because a lot of areas turned white, some spots way more than others....it took a few weeks for the clover to turn white but it eventually curled up
sometimes that's how it all goes down! I find it takes a few applications to nuke a lot of issues with tenacity.
True that proper water. So true
right!?
Thanks, any thoughts on what to use on bermuda grass, without the killing the grass?
check out weedalert.com first things first is to identify the weed. ultimately Celcius is a great product to use for weed control on bermuda lawns but its also expensive. always check the label first to make sure the target weed is listed. bermuda lawns require a few different herbicides due to the massive variety of weeds that creep in.

@@pestandlawnginja That's why you the "Ginja". I put the yard to bed for the winter. Thanks.
@@rayturner5186 anytime. if the lawn is dormant may be a good idea to do a glyphosate treatment if its a warm season grass. that'll help a ton.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks, I've learned a lot from you.
You the man Donnie! Love that you went out there and slayed that lawn! Really appreciate the continued support!
How about “dormant seeding” in the late fall/ winter to get new grass the following spring. That would be a good video. Little tongue in cheek, you can come up to my lawn film a before then come back in the spring for the after.
Dormant seeding is awesome. Only issue with our area is having to skip the pre emergent in the spring time until after the seed germinates.
Love the thinking. I helped another person do this. Planed in Thanksgiving and came up really well
What can be changed for laying down sod ?
keep it wet for 3 weeks. water deep. mow normally and fertilizer low doses every 2 weeks if the sod farm didn't load it with fertilizer
Why does Tenacity kill bermuda grass, but not the weeds? The lawn recovered and I still have the weeds but not as bad.
interesting. I couldn't tell you why. Usually when the weeds aren't dying its a sign that the herbicide either.... 1. didn't stick to the weed properly or 2. the application rate wasn't correct
bermuda is listed on the label as having adverse reactions to the active ingredient. no surprise the lawn reacted badly. glad to hear it recovered.
Do the new Sun Joe's come with the pup?
It's an add on option! LOL
Nice one!! Thanks!
Thank you! You're welcome!
Amen to that!
👊😂
had some bad luck with unexpected rain, which ended too wet. had to do a second round.
super frustrating. happens to the best of us!
I don’t understand how grass even exists when it seems so picky and delicate to grow from seed. LOL
right!?
How about mixing tenacity with other pre emergents?
it works great and highly recommended to use with prodiamine per the label.
@@pestandlawnginja thanks for confirming as I haven’t seen any recommendations on that yet.
anytime!
I couldn't get one seed to sprout😢
Ugh 😩 that’s a bummer
Im gonna blame it on bad grass seed XD, although Im pretty sure its because I overseeded to soon after putting 2,4d down.
Oh bummer!
It amazes me how many people refuse to pull weeds at the first sight of them. If I see anything its likely getting dealt with instantly.
I'm with you on that one!
It’s crazy that grass seems to go absolutely everywhere naturally if left untreated, but if you lay down millions of seeds it isn’t as straight forward
😆 true true
Nice Video, Weeds no good
You got that right
I see you fell victim of the notorious flash excercise mob at 11:00. Sometimes I just don't know what is happening to this country.
Right!? crazy times
If you’re gonna Over seed you’re gonna do it in the fall and in the fall time you’re really not gonna get a lot of weeds to pop up unless they were already there
Depends on the weeds in your local area
This is back-breaking work, especially for a 54 year old guy whos had spinal surgery, so now im on my second attempt at trying to get my lawns grown in my yard, THE BIRDS, THE BIRDS, EVERY BIRD IN THE WORLD IS DESTROYING MY YARD!!!! IVE TRIED EVERYTHING BUT A NET (WHICH IS EXPENSIVE AND INSANE) AND JUST ALL OUT DEADLY POISON!!!!! So now what???
online they sell a plastic cover with holes in it so it breaths. may just be the answer you're looking for.
Beard game 💪
Thank you!
Hey hey
My man!
Why can't I find a video on how to GROW GRASS SEEDS?? I want to produce the seeds themselves rather than buy them!
I have a video on how grass seed is produced
Only thing I see missing from this guide is fertilizer.
appreciate the feedback.
Wrong Ginga!!! Manual 4 prong aeration, is much worse than the dethatch rake!!! 😂
LOL i might buy into that idea
OK that was way too much seed with no peet. Where did your guy learn how to sew a seed?
could be
