    I just renovated/overseeded my yard. I didn’t want to break the bank, but by the end, I realized, the amount of work I need to do to detach, aerate, water, fertilize etc.... exceeds the value of the seed by a LOT. So the more expensive seed doesn”t change the equation much, but it can save a lot if it grows better and I don’t have to repeat it, or fix bare spots that much.
    I found elite grass varieties for ridiculously low price at the local landscaper supply store though, so I’m good:)

Now that i have a lawn business and also family there plus the Oregon coast has my soul Ive got to get back there for good! Doesnt hurt that its the grass seed capital of the world so lawns are plentiful and a guy can landscape 11 months out of the year vs 6 and a half if youre lucky here in Southern Idaho! Great video!

If you dont plow snow or get another job you donnt have any money

    I started a new lawn 7 years ago with RTF water saver, turned out great. thanks to Jos Roozen from Garden Sense radio show. he recommended to not change the top soil bc it will only make for a weaker root system. he said grass seed can grow in poor top soil just like trees can grow in almost solid rock. and he said dont use straw, use a fine mulch/compost to cover the seed.

    A small point is that Barenbrug is in Tangent, Oregon which is adjacent to Albany. I have lived in the Linn County ORegon for 49 years. More grass seed is grown here than anywhere. I remarked to my wife just yesterday that the grass in the fields has grown like crazy the last two weeks. It is amazing to seed so many fields of plants, the many shades of green, the seeds of which will make lawns all over the world. Thanks for visiting our bit of paradise.

My only regret is not getting it a couple of years ago when I received an offer to buy it for under $100 on sale; I spent a bit over $150 but money well spent IMO. Check out the UA-cam videos that test that machine and you might be impressed.

    I did/doing both. Using Pen/Rebel/Scotts shade/dense shade mix for bigger areas. And the smaller area I've ignored, but that fine fescue that's doing fine, got some boutique fine fescue for over-seeding/new combo. I'm still in the experimental stage for this rather shady near pure clay area. And Darwin didn't say strongest survives, but most adaptable survives.

    Great vid and affirmation. Seeded two weeks ago with Barenbrug RPR and Turf Blue (70/30 - coverage not weight) I went with two rounds of Glypho, level some low spots, two weeks fallowing, the a 3rd round of Glypho before seeding. Tenacity and a 3-18-18 at seeding. I already have a new lawn and I’m on the fence about cutting already with a manual reel. Just nervous about hurting the little turf blues, but I got to get them some light, some of the RPR is at 3 inches. Also thinking to put down some Propiconazole as I want to keep up the watering for the turf blues.

    I bought some Barenbrug, 25lbs Sun N Shade, fescue, rye, Kentucky blue mix based on your video. This one is fast germination. Disappointed. Since no local store stocks this seed I made an on-line order with Ace Hardware with store pickup (free shipping). I get it. It's only 12.5 lbs, seed. The othed half is coating. WEED content 0.30%. I did not open and returned it. It maybe great seed but I didn't give it a try based on the coating and the high weed content. Is was about $55. The other one I was going to buy was also a Fescue seed mix for the transition zone for about $75. I would give it a try but I'm trying to determine if it's coated and what the weed content is. I contacted them and haven't recieved an answer back.
    I bought more Scott sun & shade, fescue mix (fescue tall & fine, rye, kbg) with fertilizer + soil conditioner. It's expensive in that you only get about 5lbs of seed in 40lb bag, but it works well. It only covers 2000sq-ft for new lawns (4000sq-ft reseed).
    I also bought Ace Hardware branded seed that Barenbrug produces. I bought 3 small bags, Sunny mix, Shade, High Traffic. They coms in 3lbs or 7lbs sizes. This is pure seed no coatings.... Not cheap it's $12 for 3lbs or $22 for 7lbs. However this 100% seed no filler or coatings has label clearly stateing that Barenbrug makes it, seed type %, and the weed content is very low, 0.01%. I just planted some of these seeds to fill in areas that initial seeding failed to take. My yard is coming in nice with Scott, but had bare spots due to wash out from torrential rain two weeks in a row, just as seed was starting to show. One day was al ist 3 inches! I have slopes and top soil and seed went bye bye. I am recovering and with Scott and some of the Barenbrug Ace branded seeds. I put them in different area... based on sun condition
    I called and wrote Barenbrug. They are nice but did not get a good answer for my questions yet. They did recommend their RTF seed for shade and Athletic Field grass for my full sun parts of my yard.
    The confusing part is Ace Hardware list over 9 Barenbrug branded fescue seed mixes alone. Unfortunately online they don't tell you if it's coated or not. I don't want coated seed. Bottom line it's hard find information and find stock to buy. Part of the issue is their seed mixes change over time. So I understand they can't get specific, but seed coating should be online information.

      @@pestandlawnginja HEY Lawn Ginja. Happy New Year. *Well right now my Tall Fescue is green mid winter despite freezing nights and freezing rain last week. Looking good. I went with Titan RX for my 2.0 lawn. My 1.0 Lawn planted in March 2021 grass using some Scott (mixed cool season seed types with Fert for sun and shade) and some Barenbrug did not survive last summer which was brutal. So I smoked it and re-seaded in Sept 2021. I went with ALL Tall Fescue or Titan RX, 25 all seed (no filler).
      Last time (1.0 lawn) I only had 3 or 4 months to established. Here in Memphis TN area July and Aug is hot hot hot. So now I have a healthy lawn. This time to got Pre-emergence down in the fall/winter along with Fert and nutrients. So I have a running start into summer with the grass fully 9 months old before the max heat of summer in July and Aug. I dug up some of my grass to do some fence work. The roots are getting deep.
      Q: I have one problem. I need to over seed damage caused by dog pee by neighbors dog in front yard (just one area but really thanks). Then Racoon and Opossum make their rounds at night and do some yard digging. It is minor but I do need to re-seed. My plan is to put down a little more pre-emergence down before temps go up above 55F soil temp first part of March. I will have to wait 6 months before reseeding in Sept. *IS THAT CORRECT Yard Ginga?*
      I made a mistake by not putting pre emergence down until Dec. I was not going to put any Pre-emergence down until late winter early fall March time frame. We had a mild fall and early winter. I was cutting grass up through Dec and even after New years day. It was not growing fast but still needed to be cut. However some weeds popped up. I should have put the Pre emergence down in late Oct early Nov, but decided I'd wait. I figure better late than never and got some Prodiamine 65 WDG (Generic Barricade) down in Dec. Not sure I need to put more, but I will follow the directions. I will likely put a touch more (light mix) down end Feb early March before soil gets above 55F. However I can't reseed. I will wait until Sept, so I have 6mos since last Pre-emergence application. Seed is pretty expensive to throw down on ground with pre-emergence to get no germination. What is your thoughts on reseeding and pre-emergence timing.
      BTW I put down Zoysia sod down on the grass strip between street curb and side walk. That was the first of my 1.0 Lawn to die. It gets more head being surround by concrete and having no shade of any kind. I bought a few 100 sq feet of Sod and got it down white it was still summer and hot. WOW lots of stolons and rhizomes. I will experiment. If tall fescue does not work out for me with Titan RX (designed for high heat) I will likely go to Zoysia. Right now the Zoysia is BROWN and UGLY... I hate the look of it. Summer Zoysia is green but the green is light, looks LIME GREEN compared to the DARK Green of the Titan RX Tall Fescue. Cheers.

      Its important to remember that many professional soccer fields are a cool season blend of kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye grass. Tall fescue is an awesome grass but it does not mow shorter than 1.5" well and its a wider blade grass. if you know what you're signing up for the rtf tall fescue is great. I would not suggest mixing it with bluegrass. the bluegrass grows at a slower rate and doesn't match well in my opinion.

    I made the mistake of going cheap last fall with my seeds. I purchased the Scotts contractors blend (northeast mix), put down the seed in the fall and in the spring the lawn came out nice and thick but this past summer was hot and humid and not much rain and while I did water regularly, the grass was a disaster. This fall, I purchased seed at Ewing Irrigation, it was tall fescue and the company was Empro King which is sold at Ewing Irrigation and its been 12 days since I did the overseeding and its starting to come in and the areas where it is growing is coming in nicely. Hopefully, this one will do the trick but I plan of over-seeding in the spring time too.
    Anyway, two questions:
    1. Should I put down more seed in a week or two or just wait until the spring.
    2. In some areas of my lawn I do have shallow roots but in another area of the lawn it is bentgrass. I used my thatch rake to pull out as much of the bent grass as possible and it comes off like a carpet and there were the tell tale signs where it matted down, then browned out over the summer, and then now its getting green again as the weather cools. I put down tenacity twice at the beginning of August then around the third week of August. Even though I pulled off as much as possible, is there a chance it will come back even with overseeding the area? Also the area where the bentgrass was tends to stay wet for some reason, is there anything to do about that other than the obvious don't water as much? My back is low lying and in the summer tends to hold a ton of humidity.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 роки тому +1

      1. more seed is highly recommended with fescue. if it doesn't use rtf technology, which I'm pretty sure only barenbrug tall fescue has, it won't spread laterally.
      2. There is always a chance the bentgrass will make another appearance. I would use tenacity next season after your new grass seed is well established. add triclypyr ester to the tenacity mix. that will help out a lot.
      As for the watering issue, its commonly a lower spot and I have since been recommended people use a combo of dirt and sand to raise the soil levels to help with that.

    • @steviem5279
      @steviem5279 4 роки тому

      @@pestandlawnginja The bentgrass is so frustrating because it looks fine at the beginning of the season, then as it grows it mats down and you don't realize it until you start raking the area and the grass when it stands up is like 6 inches tall but you go and cut it and it just falls down again. Then it holds that moisture in and you see the brown roots and its almost slimey. Then it all browns out or stays green but when you pull on it or use a thatch rake, it lifts like a carpet, its frustrating. A gardener at the garden supply store told me to do the pull test and around the bent grass and then keep moving over until you get to the established grass, once there, dig a small area just to make sure its not grubs because they will move to new areas once they've eaten the roots of the area they destroyed. he said to do that just to make sure its not grubs and it is bentgrass and I did just that and there were not grubs where the better grass was. The unfortunate part for me is my backyard is low lying and all the neighbors have fences so the humidity tends to linger in the back and there is a strip about 3 feet wide that extends about 30 or 40 feet between my house and the neighbors and along his fence line that holds in moisture which the bentgrass seems to love. Anyway, what I'll do is allow the seed that I already planted take, and its starting to come up after 12 days and next week I will put down some more seed as the weather starts cooling off.
      BTW, the tenacity is interesting as you don't see the results right away, it takes time and next thing you know some of the weeds are gone.

      There's ways to help speed it up but not sufficient for the expectations of a home owner
