I watched this video 6 years ago and came back to watch it again today because his grasp of the themes and "lore" of Dune is so spot on its really a great listen
This talk has been absolutely fantastic. Matt does a fantastic job conveying the fun in the complex politics in Dune. The only thing that he undersold a little is the revelation that the Fremen are stockpiling water. We spend a hundred or more pages on their water conservation ways down to the milliliter, how sharing even a sip with your fellow incurs an almost spiritual bond/debt, how they keep track with rings, how they render their dead down to get their water. And THEN we get led to that *vast* underwater cavern. I got shivers, and I love the fact that a book could give me that feeling.
One of the little blurbs at the beginning of a chapter mentioned how dangerous someone is with self control. To delay or ignore satisfaction, can lead to long term victory.
I love these "flow of concience" "deep dive" a subject type videos. Your explaination of Dune helped me to further understand a series I already loved. May you recover swiftly and completely.
Matt, as a person who’s had several motorcycle accidents, and who’s had lots of broken bones/surgeries: Always get back on the bike. Never let life defeat you. Never let fear cripple you. If we ever accepted that, we’d never have flown, gone into space, or dated lovely ladies.
I should also tell you that, on a shattered ankle held together with bits of metal, my buddy Oaf insisted we build a bike together. Impairment isn’t what stops you. It’s fear of impairment. Second, we love you. A lot. I’ve been gaming since 79, and you’re an inspiration. As one who follows the ways of my people, I will offer sweetgrass and Sage for your successful surgery. Your belief in my beliefs isn’t needed. Only acceptance that we all care. Spirits walk with you, Matthew.
Best of vibes coming your way. I've watched you talk for hours and hope that I can send some good energy back your way. Thank you for all the entertaining, insightful and truly thought provoking points of view sent out through the screen. Know that many of us want the best for you and hope you have a speedy recovery. *hugs*
hey matt, good luck on your surgery and get well soon! i just wanted to take a second and say thank you! thx for all your efford in regard to dnd and espacially the dm'ing! i am a fairly new DM, but have so much fun doing it and so does my group! you encouraged me to just try it out and to figure out all the ambivalent stuff concerning dnd for myself. in a way, you gave me permission to do a lot of things my own way, not because dnd does not allow that, but because some aspects of the game seemed uncertain and as a new DM, i often felt unsure about how to tackle certain topics. you talked about lots of these topics in your channel and often gave not a clear answer on how to do it, but rather how to make it your own, what (even though i didn't know it at the time) was the exact thing i was looking for! i learned not only what my style as a DM is, what style of campaign i want to run but also how to realise this and you on your part gave me the courage to do so! so long story short, i just wanted to appreciate all the efford you do and please continue to inspire us the way you do! i really learned a lot from you and surely will in the future! thx a lot from a fellow matt
You've got a lot of support Matt, but I want to give you my support, too! I love listening to your videos, and although I prefer your edited ones I like these free-form rambles, too. Always something interesting to learn. Also, I was super happy to hear some Stan Rogers. Fine taste!
Tore my right rotar cuff couple of months ago...crazy trying to write, to sleep... just relax. Wishing you well bud. I work for NHS so understand your hospital experience. Loving your Dune stuff... incredible sci-fi on so many levels. Thank you for sharing such a weath of knowledge... love your videos!!
Matt, I hope everything is progressing well with the shoulder and preparing for surgery. I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work you have put into this channel. You, along with Web DM, and Nerdarchy have inspired me to move from player to DM and it is some of the most fun I have had with the hobby. Again, thank you for all you do
Oh Matt! I am watching in 2021 (because my favorite book is Dune), and I have so much sympathy for you even now. I am glad you wore a helmet. A helmet probably saved my father-in-law's life. He still spent time in the hospital after flipping his bike, breaking his collar bone, and puncturing a lung with broken ribs.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Matt! Huge fan of the Dune novels here. I would also be interested in hearing more about your thoughts on action economy and game progression in 5E that you mentioned towards the end.
Good luck with your surgery, Matt! Get well soon, and VERY SOLID VIDEO! As a long-time fan of Dune, seeing this out of nowhere was so massively cool! Stay strong!
Oh man, I wonder if you can make use of the speech to text programs that have made great progress over the last 5 years. Very sorry to hear about the incident Matt.
David Weber smashed the bones in his right hand into small bits several years ago and has been using a speech-to-text program to do all his writing since.
Definitely a +1 to trying out a speech to text program. They're leaps and bounds ahead of how they used to be and you should be able to write with one.
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Matt. Hope the surgery goes well. I was just watching your twitch stream with my Sunday morning coffee when I got the youtube notification that the video was back up. Pretty sure most of your audience enjoys these sorts of chats just as much as we enjoy your D&D content, so would love more if it helps you have something to focus on while your arm heals up. Hope you get some sleep, must be late for you by now.
Awesome chat about a great novel. I remember a foolish incident with a "cool" english teacher in highschool, who ridiculed me (or tried to) by picking up my library copy of Dune, looked at the cover, and pronounced to the class "Oh! Zoltan the flying monster", then he basked in the titters and laughter of the class. He seemed to live for the "cool kids' " approval. He was a real tool.
everything you talk about is so dam interesting to me - huge fan mr Coville - get better soon and please consider doing another interview like you did with Jim Murphy that was amazing - cheers and good luck with everything!!
Oh Man, I really hope the surgery goes well and you recover quickly. I grew up biking and I've seen some stuff man. I hope you do get back into it. Also, it's incredible how personally introspective you are. Most people wouldn't be able to process emotion and future life changes. I'll be praying for you.
Hey, Matt! I just wanted to say that I ran D&D for the first time last weekend for a bunch of my friends, and your videos super inspired me and helped me. Afterwards, my players all told me they had a super fun time, and nobody died (as I feared may happen). Sorry to hear about your injury, and I hope you make a swift recovery.
Best of luck with the arm surgery! And thanks for the Dune overview, I really enjoyed it. I actually read God Emperor first (SFF Book Club pick) and later went back and read Dune and Children of Dune. The trilogy was so complete, I haven't felt a need to revisit the series, but who knows. I enjoyed the concepts and the world building the most, I think.
Hi there, Matt! I'm a new subscriber, working through all of your videos. I just wanted to say 'thank you' and I wish you a speedy recovery. Hope the Surgery goes well! Thanks again!
I have always felt that the Dune series got stronger with every entry through Chapterhouse. I usually have the opposite reaction to novel series, falling in love with an author's introduction to a universe. Herbert had such deep and incredible material that continuously unfolded it never stopped amazing me.
I just started a DnD chapter with my players placing them in a Dune-esq desert inhabited by massive worms that get cranky when people use magic (as opposed to shields). So far it's been great for countering the 'I've got a spell for that' solution that tends to get a teeny bit monotonous during regular programming. So fantastic to hear your take on Dune Matt!
I really appreciate all of the videos you have put up Matt! I literally watched all of them in like a week haha. I feel more than prepared to be the GM for my friends in a couple weeks now.
Damn, Matt. I feel very sorry for you. I've broken the exact same bone playing rugby many years ago. I hope the recovery is as painless and easy as possible for you! Much love
So relieved to hear you say Heretics and Chapterhouse are the best books after the first. Was waiting the whole video for you to mention them. I almost like them more than the first, but they wouldn't pack as much punch without the context of the first.
I found the summary of film criticism around the 40:00 minute mark very insightful...I am consistently pleased when someone else explicitly clarifies an implied idea that has been essentially lost because the generations cycling through lose the context of that explicit idea for lack of being confronted with it. Going forward, I now have a new perspective for viewing critiques. Life Lessons with Colville.
Awesome chat on Dune! Hope your arm gets better and soon! Rambling is fine and I'd best most agree. Nearly ALL of your ramblings are pretty interesting!
Ana Bathe "Greater Restoration" would remove the debilitating effect. Might be able to convince the DM to allow Lesser Restoration to remove the condition.
Matt - may your surgery go well! Thanks for posting the live stream here. I liked hearing about Dune. I haven't read it in years and I was pretty young when I first picked it up, so I'm surprised how much of that setting detail I remembered. I definitely didn't catch the Turks vs the British thing the first time around, though.
I want to add my +1 to the idea of sticking to unedited videos until you recover, MC. I'm sure all the community prefers uncensored content to no content! Also, love a Dune series. I have yet to read it but recently resolved it was time...then misplaced my ancient paperback. I've since got the series on audiobook and ebook, and have been procrastinating because I'm just intimidated by it. However, your pointing out the theme of Lawrence of Arabia has totally got me excited and your rambling, almanac explajation of Dune setting has helped to remove the clutter I hear from other summaries and discussions, and I would love a series that delves into the cosmology and societyfrom the setting of Dune and the literary themes of the stories. Sorry to hear about your accident! Ginger and turmeric, fish oil, omega 3s among other foods can help reduce inflammation, hopefully it might make your injury heal just a little bit sooner. Prayers for your recovery and for your doctors to have wisdom.
Good luck man! I've injured myself as well, one arm sucks! Went over handle bars last week, I'm in PT now . The constant pain makes it very hard to get through the days.
Best description of the Dune universe ever, with apologies to Ideas Of Fire And Ice, which excels at doing a compressed narration of the books. But then there's this: "If you guys wanna argue about Mythbusters, go and do it someplace else." I like Matthew very much, and I like the community that has gathered around him, at the center of something special, something straightforward and transparent, smart and friendly and dare I even say joyful, here on UA-cam.
Sorry to hear about your accident and injuries, Matt. Hope for a speedy recovery and know that we will all be here for ya, once you are able to return to the interwebs.
Well it seems leaving at 5:30am missed me only 30minutes or so, but that was quite interesting. I do wish you a speedy recovery, but most importantly, I want to thank you for re-igniting my DMing fire after a year of hiatus. My last campaing just shriveled up when work schedule messed up the game for some players. I felt so down since I had put so much effort to the campaing at that point and got many memorable moments from the players and it just dies out because of work schedules. Also me being from Finland and DMing to Americans and Canadians, limited the days I could run the game (mostly the weekends). For almost a year I did not make any DMing things, although I was a player in another game (although had to take a break from that as it was messing with my school... It's been a stressful year. But little less than month ago, UA-cam recomended me some random D&D lore videos, after few videos, your video of playertypes was suggested, and I watched it. And I enjoyed it. There I went to you your DM screen episode, Deck of many things, making characters, random encounters, time in game, prep, losing... I got hooked. Your insight that came from many years of experience running the game got me thinking what I could do better, how can I improve my prep, how to hook players even better. All this has now culminated in to me creating my own setting, my own little detailed piece of world that I can use in the future to run D&D games. I feel the creative fire burning hot, after being stoked by your videos. So I wanted to say thank you. That is also one reason why I was in the Dune chat too. I tried to do it there, but 700 people chatting, somethings are bound to be missed. So here it is. *THANK YOU!* I will once more hope you a quick recovery and pleace do get on the bike again. Something happening once is just coincidence.
Sorry to hear about your shoulder I hope you feel better soon. Also keep up the good work on the Critical Role Comics, #3 had me shaking in my chair i was laughing so hard and the maps made my heart happy.

Hey! Your Stuff Helped Me Out!, Acctually i watched all your videos at once, (like a Stranger Things Marathon) to learn how to DM my first Adventure and things went really well, Thanks, Keep the great work man.
I read Dune when i was in HS, but this Chat invigorated my desire to take it in again so I got it on Audible this month and i'm consuming it now. Thanks Matt!
Hi Matt I feel your pain. I got on an bike accident a few years ago, I broke my wrist and I had to work anyway with a awkward casket and I felt frustrated and angry, etc. It took me a while to get back to the bike and I remain afraid of getting injured again... and I gave the bike away recently. I think fear got the best of me in this one. I do hope it doesn't happen the same in your case. Maybe I'll buy a bike again soon, who knows :) Patience on your recovery. I know I ran out of mine, so I'm sending you tons in my thoughts. I managed to improve my tipping and mouse using skill by having a handicap. I'm very efficient now xD And I recommend Court of Thorn and Roses series :) Best of energy in your recovery!
get well soon speedy recovery strength love and clarity Matt all the best! I tore my Achilles tendon took 3 years to get over the mentality that it was ok to run and jump on happy to say im on a treadmill exercising daily things seem to be normal finally
Ouch! Hope you'll recover swiftly! I need to get back to Dune. I bought the trilogy last year, read the first book and loved it (although, listening to you, there might have been some details I missed), but stopped reading some ways into the second. As soon as I am done with my current literature, I'll start again from the beginning and try to approach the second and third book in the trilogy differently (not as an adventure but more as a political/philosophical drama).
Watching your explanation of the Dune universe I was struck by one of the things that may greatly benefit any adaptation: the importance of secrecy. What I mean by this is that there are 'wheels within wheels' in the Dune universe, the obvious explanations and the subtle reasons. It's important to know the obvious explanations, such as the Atredies/Harkonnen rivalry. What is essential, and should be presented as terrifying revelation, are such things as the ecological transformation of Dune, the full abilities of the Bene Gesserit, and most importantly the understanding that it is discipline in the face of death, and not a fictional Spice, that truly allows humanity to evolve.
Dude you gotta watch out, it's a jungle out there. Rest as long as you wish, and get well. Sincerely: A new subscriber (Also discussing Dune pleases the great Shai-Hulud. May his passing cleanse the world.)
Phenomenal rundown of Dune; gave me chills remembering some of that stuff as you described it. When I saw the David Lynch film (4 times) in 1984, I thought I was the only one in the world who liked it. It seemed like every critic in America loathed it and named it the worst film of the year. Think you stumbled on BR2049, though :)
People ask me how I come up with all my rpg plots. My answer, "I've watched a lot of movies and I take all the things I like and put them in the game."
You also have one of the most original takes on the plot of Dune that I've ever heard. Lawrence of Arabia, now that I've heard it it makes so much sence!
I'm sorry to hear about your accident, I'm glad it wasn't worse. Good job putting a helmet around the grey matter; the Internet needs that thing for continued excellent D&D advice. I hope the surgery and recovery go as well as it possibly can.
Matt I love your videos. I found them a few months ago, after wanting to play DnD for years with no avail. They have taught me so much and I haven’t even played yet. Ive watched running the game 3 times now! Keep up the good work!!! P.s where is the best place to suggest future content for thr channel. P.s.s get better soon!
Hay Matt, sorry to hear about the arm. I did something similar a few years ago, both arms. I totally get how deadly the boredom of healing can be , I would sit on a pier ( yes in Halifax, to bad I can't sing so well) and watch the ships. I came up with the basses of my setting. I hope your healing goes well.
I've read every book in the series. You did a wonderful job explaining it. I have always wished that they would make movies out of the rest of the books.
I watched this video 6 years ago and came back to watch it again today because his grasp of the themes and "lore" of Dune is so spot on its really a great listen
I’m doing the exact same thing now :) he’s truly a river to his people!
44:10 starts talking about Dune
Totally Not a Ninja bless you
THANK YOU, the man can casually ramble for 40 minutes :)
:)
May the gods smile upon you and all your loots be phat.
The good work, thank you.
Dangit Matt did you cut off your arm to put on the hand of vecna and invented the bike accident to distract us?
I always shake my head when I read about players doing that. Then I remember, "Oh yeah, I've done that."
I'd be very tempted...
Do it. Cease the power for yourself. It certainly won't affect YOU.
Mr. Super Nintendo Chalmers No! Don't cease the power! Then no one can use it.
Do not listen! They would have the power for themselves! Take it! TAKE IT!!
They just need those extraction devices from the Tank Girl movie...
My sympathies, Matt.
Silver lining: You've discovered an excuse to wear pauldrons as casual activewear.
Holy shit that singing voice!
Kapelannew. I totally agree! I'm working on my DM storyteller voice, to little success.
The man is a GM and story teller, he's clearly a Bard.

Watching this to hold me over till the next Dune video
I love these "flow of concience" "deep dive" a subject type videos. Your explaination of Dune helped me to further understand a series I already loved. May you recover swiftly and completely.
"I'm so hopped up on drugs right now, and caffeine" -Duned up Matt C
The coffee must flow.
I can't wait to listen to this whole thing while I work on my D&D prep tonight.
Best of luck to a speedy recovery!
Rolled a natural 1 on your ride check? We've all been there...
I love this chat about Dune, it's nice to find other people as invested in the whole thing!! Dune ♥
I love dune. God Emperor is my favorite. So happy to hear of your enthusiasm for it.
Matt, as a person who’s had several motorcycle accidents, and who’s had lots of broken bones/surgeries:
Always get back on the bike.
Never let life defeat you. Never let fear cripple you. If we ever accepted that, we’d never have flown, gone into space, or dated lovely ladies.

Rock on brother, love from Ireland
I respect your mentality, but the guy has a family that depends on him. Not sure if going back to riding motorcycles is the best choice.
"as a person who’s had several motorcycle accidents"... "Always get back on the bike"
Really dude?
What's so hard to understand? It's a metaphor for not giving up.
I have always liked your videos, the fact you started that with Barretts Privateers..... You sir are a man of true culture.
Best of vibes coming your way. I've watched you talk for hours and hope that I can send some good energy back your way. Poor Matt! Wishing you speedy recovery, sanity and --- good singing!
Dune has been my absolute favorite ever since I first read it in high school. and now after listening to this I feel the need to read it again.
I also absolutely loved God Emperor of Dune despite, and maybe because of, the shift in tone.
Oh Man, I really hope the surgery goes well and you recover quickly. I grew up biking and I've seen some stuff man. I hope you do get back into it.

Thanks so much for uploading this Matt. It was really fun to listen to.
This video is criminally underrated
Also would love to see you play more of the dune board game
Hi there, Matt! I'm a new subscriber, working through all of your videos. I just wanted to say 'thank you' and I wish you a speedy recovery. Hope the Surgery goes well! Thanks again!
I love that you started this chat with a Stan Rogers song! lol love Barrett's Privateers
Always excited to see Colville content, even just to hangout. Wishing you the best in your recovery!
Loves this video. Dune was one of my favorites books/movies growing up in the 80s.
This was fascinating. Ramble away - wish you a speedy recovery!
YES DUDE please do a Dune series, I'm a huge nerd for it, and it's been on my mind a lot lately.
OK, but it will take five years
I have always felt that the Dune series got stronger with every entry through Chapterhouse. dune is so dense with evocotive ideas and so haphazard and casual with them - it inspires awe
The Stan Rogers intro was unexpected and awesome.

It would be nice to see a series about Dune from you - I read it halfway through the year and liked it a lot
Matt could explain anything... He makes every movie or book he reads sound soooo interesting
I want to add my +1 to the idea of sticking to unedited videos until you recover, MC. I'm sure all the community prefers uncensored content to no content! Also, love a Dune series.
The more you do Dune. The more I will watch.
Good job explaining the basics.
Hi Matt
I feel your pain.
Maybe I'll buy a bike again soon, who knows :)
Patience on your recovery. I know I ran out of mine, so I'm sending you tons in my thoughts.
I managed to improve my tipping and mouse using skill by having a handicap. I'm very efficient now xD
And I recommend Court of Thorn and Roses series :)
Best of energy in your recovery!
Holy shit, for a moment in that introduction i thought you had actually lost your arm. Glad its not that bad. Hope you recover swiftly.
Thanks for the episode! Frank Herbert was the author who understood the true nature of both time and interconnection.
get well soon speedy recovery strength love and clarity Matt all the best! I tore my Achilles tendon took 3 years to get over the mentality that it was ok to run and jump on happy to say im on a treadmill exercising daily things seem to be normal finally
This video inspired me to finally read Dune. Thanks!
Sincerely: A new subscriber
(Also discussing Dune pleases the great Shai-Hulud. May his passing cleanse the world.)
Feel better, Matt! :c I hope you have a swift and easy recovery, and that the next few weeks treat you well. Take it easy, man!
Watching this... in Halifax, and I play traditional Nova Scotian music, you have no idea how many times I've sung that, haha.
A speedy and hopefully complication-less recovery to you, Matt!
Hope you are recovering well!!!
Welp...now I need to go and watch Dune again for the first time in like 15 years. XD
A a sailor from Halifax I appreciate your musical taste.
"Someone said I hope you get to LindseyWarren's...SHAI-HULUD"
I started singing as soon as I heard the song, I know it by heart, feel better!
The long wait for videos made this 2 hours so worth it
Sorry to hear about your injury :^( best wishes, hope you get better soon
As a man who lives near the Halifax Pier, I loved the Stan Rogers rendition
I I really want to thank you for your incredible vids. You brought me back to role play. I am DMing again after years. Much of it down to you.
I had the exact same bike crash this summer, so sorry you’re going through this Matt
