I’m a widow, and a senior citizen too.. lol, so being gifted a new puppy (I agreed to it), has been challenging to say the least. I've recently got a miniature schnauzer at 6 weeks old. He's now 12 weeks old and is a land shark nipping at my hands and feet. This video explains some reasonable tips that I will try. Thanks 😊

Excellent video. I wish I had watched it BEFORE I got my puppy who is now almost 4 months old. Everything is going well except for the biting. And although I've had puppies before, never have I had one who bit so hard or so frequently. The worst is when he bites a spot which was bitten a day or two ago. Unfortunately , it's been very difficult for me not to yell when he bites. My arms and legs are a mass of healing cuts which bled - some profusely. I have tried time out and 'me' time out like closing myself in to the bathroom for a couple of minutes. The problem is that once he starts biting he's like a wood pecker and basically I'm trying to get out of his way but often can't. One thing I really appreciate from your video is to carry the correct toy around - that's "why didn't I think of that?" I just might have to get the air puff canister. Thank you for the video. I figured I was the only person with this problem and that I went horribly wrong somewhere....well, I went wrong somewhere but I think I'm going to be able to correct this. Goes to show how much more we (old) humans can learn especially when we 'think" we know more than we admit.
Thanks for watching! We have recently revised this video with some new advice and changed some of our suggestions. Please check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html . I have a 3 month old Bernie Doodle Shark! She is so full of energy and grabs everything to bite and chew. She is very smart but also very stubborn. Thanks for the tips,
We don't feel that dogs are "stubborn" or "difficult". Puppies may seem like they refuse to do things but it’s usually because 1. Confusion 2. Lack of motivation 3. Not enough reinforcement 4. They are overstimulated. It's up to the humans to figure out what is going on and how to approach the situation differently. Training is hard and time consuming and can be very frustrating. But we can help. Consider enrolling in our online course 30 Days to Puppy Perfection. Being in a supported FB group with other students and Zoom calls with Michele and Nicole 3 times a week can definitely give you an opportunity to get feedback on the issues you are finding difficult. This video can get you started on this topic and the online course can give you the “how to”. This might be my new favorite dog channel...and based in Roc too! We have a 5 month old Australian Cattle Dog and just can't seem to make much progress with him and his biting and other issues. @@HowToTrainADreamDog some of the crucial stuff is not what immediately comes to mind like the time out/needing to decompress in the crate a bit. I’d never associated the biting with excess energy or over stimulation before. I don’t know if you agree with this but sowmtjjng I’ve found is that my puppy needs different textures t different times and actuallly softer toys (totally supervised) can be what she wants sometimes. I hold it and she just squishes it. It’s often after super hectic chewing in something tough. I bring in the softer toy when she starts going for my clothes. She’s never left with them though!
What you're noticing is 100% true. Our puppies have preferences and sometimes they want to chew on something soft, other times they like something harder. It's great to offer a variety!
My puppy is eight weeks old also and biting and nipping at my face are two things I guess we’re going to be working on for a while. It’s been a long time since I had a new puppy, my last dog lived 15 1/2 years so I guess I’m out of practice.
The talk on saying ouch the correct way is so true, I'm getting a puppy soon but my neighbour has a steffie. He likes to chew and bite hands when playing but he's so well trained it's a game, I ball a fist and roll it around his snout for him to catch and he grabs it holds it for two secs then let's go but it's so soft, he's holding my fist like a egg, if his teeth do hurt I go "OW" and he releases me immediately, staffies get too much hate, he's such a sweetheart and amazing with kids
It's great you are doing puppy research before you get one! We have updated this video with a few more suggestions, including how saying "ouch" may not always work and what to do about it. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html
Thank you! Your so helpful! If you want your puppy to stop barking at night, Put something that smells like you! Then she / he will stop barking! Hope this works!
My oh my! Thank you for this great video! My 2 month old boxer is biting way too much. He’s cut 2 family members already and we really want to train him well before it’s too late.

Thank you for the information, esp. for the 'exercise' time for puppies. I have 7 weeks old Beagle, of course she's nipping and biting my finger, my feet and even my hair 🥲 I take her to walk nearby every morning and afternoon, which turned out she always walking back to home only after maybe 20 mins of walking. Based on your video now i know maybe 15-20 mins is just enough for my puppy.
That's right! We don't want to overtire them, that can definitely increase the biting behavior. For a 7 week old Beagle, only about 10 min of walking is okay. You can exercise them more with enrichment and training as well
Actually we've updated our advice and suggest more emphasis on preventing the biting and redirecting to the appropriate chew toy. You can learn more about our latest advice here: ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html

How’d it go? I lost my beloved chihuahua (to old age, thankfully), a couple years ago. I just got a new puppy a couple weeks ago, and man do her bites hurt 😭 (a boxer)

@@chxrrylollipop2349 6 weeks is ok, depending on how the pup is doing... I just got a german shepherd at 6 weeks (she's almost 10 weeks now..) She was already eating everything in sight.. wet food, dry food, etc.. when I brought her home she ate all my old dogs food too.. he was sad. :(
Thank you for putting things clearly and making things easier I use a ball or her little fish toy which she loves I have only had my teacup chihuahua for 2 days she's 13wks old and she has had an owner before me somebody who didn't know anything about dogs but she said she is more or a cat person and my little girl is getting use to me and my partner her teeth came inn a week ago and after her nap she's full of energy running around chewing anything especially my hands and feet I have been doing the high pitched noise her litter mates would make when she bites me but she barks at me and trys to bite even harder but now I can put her in time out I have been looking for measurements of each meal I should give her but nobody seems to know could you help please as I love the way you explain things I have hearing problems and your so clear to understand I think your the purfect person to help me in these matters thank you for the helpful hints from Jane vince 😊

@@wesleymartins5970 no, just that the puppy problably misunderstood the yelp with an invitation to play more, because if u yelp and then keep playing we will think that that's the noise u do when u are playing
Wesley Martins thank you so much. i'm so sick of all of this "positive. put in a sit" it doesn't work for my dog. he just wants my arm, not the toy or the sit. also, for me, if i say ouch really sharp and loud, then he usually listens
I have a 12 week old mini Schnauzer who is play biting my hands & arms mercilessly. My yelp just brings harder biting or a new attack on my feet or legs instead. He also bit my lip. In the attacks I am offering him other toys that he quickly snubs to bite me instead. I feel like he spends more time in the crate than with me. Feel slightly discouraged. Will get a Kong & try changing out the toys & doing the other things you said. Felt some success with a good size bully stick only used in the crate. He was biting me less & not as hard. Because he got diarreah ( really didn't think he would ingest enough to cause any issues) have had to stop using it just in case it was the cause. Doing burger & rice diet & probiotics & His bowels returning to normal.
I hope these tips work. We have one right now that has truly caused MUCH FRUSTRATION, and almost regret at times that we kept her. (We have her Mama too, and they play together and we LOVE her) but she is so DESTRUCTIVE!

My 9 year old son waiting years to get his first Golden retriever puppy and we thought this was the best time since we are sheltering in place. It has been heartbreaking in the first week our 8 week old puppy has brought my son to tears 3 times, pulled off his pajamas in front of the neighbors and wont play with him other than biting. I have had plenty of pups and never had one so bitey, maybe she had too many bro/sis to play with. I hope this helps as we have tried everything and it is getting worse and now my son sits on top of the couch so afraid of her. Kong is coming and hopefully some calmness along with some of these excellent tips. Thanks for it all and your hard work.
@nevadasmith100 I understand completely. We just got an 8 week old golden doodle and all he does is try to bite my 5 year old. I’ve tried everything. My son likes to get down on the ground and try to play but I realize that makes him more likely to bite him. We have a kong but he doesn’t seem interested even when there’s food in it. I’ve tried saying ouch and that doesn’t work. I’m thinking time out will be the next time out. Good luck to you!

@@nathanperry5173 this is great! Have you heard of those no noise squeakers? I have one and my dogs love it. It has a silent squeaker only the dogs can hear inside it. I thought it was broken when I bought it home but it really does work!
We are struggling with our little vampire. ❤️She lunges at the other two dogs and has been reprimanded by both of them. Not bitten but corrected. I am thinking my other dogs may be reacting to my protective actions and can sense my angst. How do I get her to quit terrorizing my 13 and 7 yr old pups. I love her but feel so bad for the other two. They are walking on egg shells. She is super fast and does a drive by nip or tail pull or gets in their face and barks at them. Is there a video on this? Any advice would be so greatly appreciated by our two older dogs and me!
I have a schnauzer mini (3 months old) and have noticed that when I'm not successful in redirect him from my pants/shoes, I use my hands to push him away from pants, he gets aggressive and starts to jump and bite in my thighs (legs). He really changes his expression, looking scary. I try to imobilize him for a while, but he only gets agitated. I'll try to leave the room more, and wait him chill out.

Thank you we needed this video and we are going to start these tactics today. We have a new yorkie/bichon puppy and I have been at a loss on how to handle her aggressive attitude. I never realized that too many toys would be boring to her so today half gets put away and I’ll buy the Kong toy for her. Thank you for sharing this.

I've recently got a miniature schnauzer at 6 weeks old. He's now 12 weeks old and is a land shark nipping at my hands and feet. This video explains some reasonable tips that I will try. Thanks 😊
We are so happy you found this video valuable, we did update this one so if you want a little more info on this topic here's the link ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html
Has he stopped biting? What worked the best? I have a 7-week schnoodle. 15:42
And if you're still struggling after watching that video, consider enrolling in our biting mini course! courses.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-biting-mini-course
Thank you very much. I was doing all the wrong things. All your advice sounds so sensible. ♥️

@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Thanks a lot…am getting a puppy and I truly needed this to know what I’m putting myself into
We are here to help you!
This might be my new favorite dog channel...and based in Roc too! We have a 5 month old Australian Cattle Dog and just can't seem to make much progress with him and his biting and other issues.
You go into more detail about reasons behind certain behaviors than other channels do and just fro. This video I picked a few things I want to try out!
Hey neighbor! How's your puppy doing?
I just got an Australian shep, and she deff is a biter. She is so playful and loves to Herd me
Excellent excellent info. I was doing 95% of it but some crucial bits were missing and I feel more confident now I’ve seen this. Thanks. ❤
We are happy it was helpful. We've revised this video recently and have even more great tips! Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html
This video is so helpful!
My dog is 8 weeks old and she bites a lot and this video really helps
Thank you for your thoroughness in all of your videos!! Such a HUGE help for this brand new puppy mom.

You can exercise them more with enrichment and training as well
@@HowToTrainADreamDog i thought puppies can’t go on walks until 14 weeks?
The yelling is what's helping me the most, I think my neighbours might think I'm crazy, but it truly helps
Actually we've updated our advice and suggest more emphasis on preventing the biting and redirecting to the appropriate chew toy. You can learn more about our latest advice here: ua-cam.com/video/FBI5xOSDQMs/v-deo.html

When I yelp or say ouch, my dog bites even harder.
@@wesleymartins5970 no, just that the puppy problably misunderstood the yelp with an invitation to play more, because if u yelp and then keep playing we will think that that's the noise u do when u are playing
@@wesleymartins5970 What do you suggest then if you can critique, give some examples. Please dont say crate time or time out.
My problem is with my cat she loves being petted but only with my left hand. Lol... when I reach with my right she scratches and bites

Thanks for it all and your hard work.
nevadasmith100 looks like your son has become the action toy. From this video perhaps a toy rope to distract your puppy and frozen kongs as suggested.
@@natalielenstra787 Kong is here so we will see. Thanks

Thanks for watching Puppy Biting Tips For New Puppy Owners! How often does your puppy bite? What toy are you using to redirect your puppy's attention away from you or others?
My puppy has a rope and squeaker toy that I squeak to get her attention and than use the rope side of the toy to let her bite and tug on.
@@nathanperry5173 this is great! Have you heard of those no noise squeakers? I have one and my dogs love it. It has a silent squeaker only the dogs can hear inside it. I thought it was broken when I bought it home but it really does work!
How To Train A Dream Dog where can I find this magical dog toy? ❤️
Thanks For This Informative Video.
