    Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

    Love the Island Packet. They always seem to be better maintained too. One tip on these boat tours, don’t forget to take a shot of the transom. Most people want to see if it has rear access, swim platform, sugar scoop etc. (I know we can go look it up elsewhere but complete boat tours are super helpful.)

    This is probably the best cruising boat you have ever reviewed. I toured the Island Packet factory about ten years ago. Bob Johnson's son (Sorry, I do not recall his first name) gave me a personal tour and I was impressed by the organization and cleanliness of the shop. I got my start in the boat business back in 1982 selling Island Packets and Catalinas at Port Tack Sailboats in Lauderdale. I have always been impressed with the Island Packet. Each model is spacious, strong, attractive, functional, and well laid out. They are good for taller people too. Bob and his son are both well over 6' and it shows in the headroom of the Endeavors he designed and carries through on the Island Packets.
    Island Packet boats have been named Cruising World "Boat of the Year" seven times. I think that is a record. Bob sold the company to Hake Yachts in 2016. I have heard various stories about what happened with the company after that but it is my understanding Island Packets are out of production but the Hake Seaward RK designs are still in limited production.

    This to me is an almost perfect layout and use of space in the front of the vessel. I really dislike the V-Berths we see in so many forward cabins. This is perfect in that it uses the V for a head and gives you a nice pullman berth. Most boats instead try to make a head closer to the saloon making them smaller most times to give a little more room for the V-Berth configuration or a bigger head with a much smaller V-Berth. This is just a much better use of space IMHO. This is especially true in a boat like this one with an easy to use aft head for a day head...

    An IP in the mid 40s is my short-list. I want a boat that can go to Bermuda without hesitation.
    Cargo ships lose containers all the time. Those containers often float just at or slightly under the surface. Sailing a fin keel boat out in the Atlantic, it's always in the back of your mind, "what if?" I am confident an Island Packet would sail on. A container is likely to tear the keel off a J boat. If you're wise, it's easier to relax on a full keel boat. People love their IPs on the docks.

    I would say that’s a quarter berth rather than an aft cabin. It is a beautiful boat down below, but above decks not so attractive. Plus, be ready to spend a lot of money refurbishing the gel coat. If not kept in good condition, the oxidation on IPs is nothing short of ugly. I know. I’ve detailed them.

      The 38 aft cabin is approximately the same size as the 35 we own. It is a cabin with standing headroom (I'm 6'2") plenty of storage, a bench seat and a very large berth in fact larger than a queen where it counts.

    Encountered one with cracked chain plates. Owner claimed the factory told him they were 409 stainless, not what you want.

    • @montanadan2524
      @montanadan2524 3 роки тому

      I believe they are a higher grade but due to the way they are attached, the grade is irrelevant. IP chain plates are integrated into fiberglass layup of the hull. Should the deck seal breakdown and leak, salt water builds around the plates and corrosion runs rampant due to the lack of oxygen. Many IP's from the late 80's and early 90's have had the plates replaced but not all. My boat had the plates replaced prior to our purchase.

      @@montanadan2524 The owner told me the factory told him they were 409 stainless. As you know that series is magnetic. I had never heard of a 409, but looked it up and it is made. Yes, I know about corrosion (a reason that you razor loses it's edge) and crevice corrosion but I still maintain that a 300 series is a better choice, since they are less prone to rust and corrosion. Yes I also know about electro polishing which removes any iron that may be on the surface. If you can get your hands on a Ryerson, or Alro catalogue look the alloys up. The marine insurance guys want the chain plates replaced along with the standing rigging every 10 years anyway. (mine lasted for 20)

    Beautiful example of this boat. But not a fan. Don’t like the punishment of a bowsprit. Necessary because it’s the only way to get enough sail to move it. Bow sprit is a punishment because you little return for big negatives. Several feet of boat length that gives you no space below, no more waterline and it sticks out there just waiting to do damage in a marina as you swing that thing around. And it’s really hard to tell just where it is. Also many marinas will charge you for a 42 foot slip. You are not allowed to let it overhang the dock nor stick it out behind most slips. And yes, as a licensed captain I have cruised, delivered many bow sprinted boats. The other negative on this ‘wannabe’ cruiser is the tankage. Like so many manufacturers/ designers they are marketing to the eye not the brain. Lots of wonderful space but a what cost. Almost every locker has a tank or some equipment in it and despite that, only 57 gal of fuel. Pitiful. It will Join the ranks of boats with there decks lined with jugs! But indeed, a beautiful interior (except for the afterthought Nav station. Bottom line is that all boats are a set of compromises. The live aboard part is great. The blue water cruise part/. Eh. As usual, you guys did a great job of documenting the boat.

    • @Rontero

      so not a "true" Bluewater due to fuel capacity?

    • @roadboat9216
      @roadboat9216 3 роки тому +1

      @@kevio6868 There are “true” blue water cruisers with NO ENGINE let alone poor fuel capacity but 95% of sailors don't want to cruise that way including me. Not sure how much cruising you have done but it is a fact that when cruising, not just daysailing, that unless you are in the tradewind routes, most cruisers motor nearly 50% of the time. and with a boat like this especially. What bothers me is that they are hard marketing this boat as it's main attribute is that it is a "real cruiser" well then why do they give it a "condo" interior with inadequate tankage and storage. the boat doen't have proper mechanical spaces because they have worked so hard to give it a "spacious" interior. And believe me it's not just Island Packet that's doing this but it IS Island Packet thats pushing what a great "cruiser" it is. others don't market this way. giving a boat a full keel and a bow sprit does not make it a great blue water cruiser. it does make it a bit tubby and a mediocre performer.

    • @montanadan2524
      @montanadan2524 3 роки тому

      Now a bit of owner perspective. Tankage for both water and fuel are tucked away nicey mid ship under the cabin soul. On our 35 which is very similar to the 38 shown, has only one holding tank occupying space under one settee cushion area, the rest of the space under the seats and behind the backrest area are open for storage. We find the remaning storage space is more than the typical owner would need. Last summer, we lived aboard and rented space in a Great Lakes marina, they charge us for a 35 foot boat even know our dingy davits and tender probably increase our overall length to 42 feet. We use the marina as home base and stay there weekends, weekdays we cruise and mostly anchor out. We would like to anchor out all the time but we force ourselves into unknown marinas occasionally for maneuvering practice. IP's are true full keel vessels and ours like many others is without a bow thruster. With just a bit of forward momentum you can thead the eye of a needle in a decent blow but you only get one chance to do it gracefully, things can get interesting if a do over is required. As we are new to sailing as of last season, we try to do it as much as possible to refine our skills for our trip across the lakes and down the east coast. We do run the desiel more than we like and fuel consumption on our boat is around 1/2 gallon an hour at cruising speed so our 50 gallon tank got topped off a few times last season. Based on our current consumption, we have a range of at least 500 miles on the engine. I am not a fan of large bow spirits but it is a great platform for the two large anchors residing in the roller so I guess thats a plus.
