  • The Vision 444 is a brand new to the market performance cruising catamaran in the mid-40 foot range that I believe is a strong competitor to what's currently out there. Built in South Africa, she's not only pretty, practical, livable, and sailable, but she is also very competitively priced at a $689,000 base price.

    Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

    I sat here looking at the tiny thumbnail for this video in my "watch later" playlist thinking "why does that look so familiar?" before finally realizing, "OH!, Kon Tiki!!!! YAAAASSSSSS"
    So glad to see new footage of the 444! It's #1 on my list, aside from a fully custom design. As much as I love Seawind, and am looking forward to seeing the 1370, I feel like Vision is just more open to customer customization. A lot of that boat's design has come from customer ideas that they incorporated into the design of the boat. For instance the side boarding platforms were a change made for a disabled customer that they decided was a great feature and incorporated it into the boat moving forward. They are also very accommodating when it comes to things like that boom furling main, electric motors rather than diesels, etc...
    A couple of notables:
    Some of those "access panels" you pointed out are actually more storage, for instance you missed the live bait well in the cockpit next to the Port side step up. and the tall vertical panel is storage for things like shore cables and what not.
    The pantry in Kon Tiki was a customer customization. Normally the port aft head utilizes that space for the shower area.
    The utility locker in the port hull that you pointed out is also present on the starboard hull. All of the boats major components and through hulls are located in those compartments for ease of access.
    All wires and hoses are routed through conduits to reduce the need to fish things through hard to reach spaces
    The solar panels are mounted in such a way that you can fold them over when you need to access the boom.
    The hulls are built with 18 water tight compartments, rather than a bilge so if you hit something and it breaches, only the impacted compartment(s) flood.
    Those side access doors can hold, IIRC 500kg, so are quite robust!
    Gone with the Wynns actually has a short factory tour and talk with the owner of Vision. They talk a little bit about the customer customizations and what not.
    The vision yachts channel has a multi-part walkthrough of Kon Tiki that goes pretty in depth into the features of this boat.

    Hi Jordan, Great tour (much more concise than ours and would love some feedback on ours from you). We've been doing our research on this boat for a while, so we learned a lot and couldn't help but share it all. She sails well, however, we're used to a monohull with a genoa and this has a jib, which seems small in comparison. During our test sail, there were about 12 people on the boat and the sails were far from perfectly trimmed and she got up to and maintained 8 kts quickly. BTW, we love the thoughtfulness that went into this boat as well and the workroom and nav station are indeed great. I'm expecting you will see more videos from us in the future that feature this boat...

    Very nice boat. No waisted or empty space. Very good layout. Previous Nautitech generation had a similar location nav station, not the current one. Only draw back I saw was the location of the generator. Not easy to maintain in the small cramp space. With enough solar, lithium batteries and dual alternator (which I saw) on main engine, you might not need it. I love the engine access but would hate the smell of diesel in the cabin. Thanks for the tour.

    • @amymichaud9657

      @FlesHBoX 3 роки тому +2

      While I entirely agree that handrails should be there, he missed that there is a strap there for clipping onto that can be used as a grab.\

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 3 роки тому

      @@FlesHBoX It's possible the underside of the coachroof can be used as a handrail, if it's designed for that. Some boats have that as a deliberate design feature.
      The black webbing on the coachroof and deck is called a jackline. When wearing a safety harness, it's clipped into the jackline when moving on the foredeck, typically in bad weather, dark/twilight/etc. Because the jackline needs to be slack enough to allow some movement, for example up to the sails, it would probably be too loose to use as a hand hold.

    • @FlesHBoX
      @FlesHBoX 3 роки тому

      @@LoanwordEggcorn yes, Jackline... I can never remember that name for some reason, lol.
      On the vision yachts channel he talks about the jacklines, and they appear to be fairly suitable for a handhold. Not sure about having a grab on the underside of the coachroof, I don't believe he mentions it in the walkthrough on the vision channel.

    • @OnANewTack

      @@OnANewTack Thanks much! Good to know, and good feature.
      Also a very unobtrusive yet logical and intuitive way to do a grab rail.
      There's often an overhang at the coachroof; why not design it as a hand hold.

    Nice tour. I love the forward cockpits on Leopard. To me, it’s hard for cats of similar size and price to compete. At anchor the forward cockpit is where the breeze is. Backed into a marina, that’s where the privacy is.
    I prefer access to the engines to be thru the deck, so the mess of fluids, tools, extension cords is not in your cabin.
    You are right about grab rails. For live aboard and passages, you probably want grab rails and an armrest/rail on the outside of the helmsmen’s seat.
    I’m surprised there is no small storage next to the bed in the owners cabin.
    The saloon seemed nice.

      Looking at a sales agreement from November, their "optional Extras" are;
      watermaker
      screacher with furler
      asym with snuffer
      nav station electronic repeaters
      ice maker
      10kva genset
      2x aircon
      washing machine
      additional plotter
      plotter 12" upgrade
      hayrack boom (standard is stackpack)
      Furling boom
      a few different mainsail options
      Underwater lights
      This document does not include options like electric motors rather than diesels, which is a specific option listed on the vision site.
      If you were to get every upgrade on this list it would bring up the price from 689 to close to $850k. Then of course there are the import duties and taxes, delivery (assuming you don't pick it up in Knysna yourself), which would push it pretty close to a million I suspect (I think SA fortunately gets really low import duty fees in the US, which is nice).
      1.75m is REALLY high, but I don't doubt it is possible, though that would be more a result of extensive customization and non-price list upgrade options. For instance, the side boarding platforms were originally a customization made for a disabled customer. That customer probably ended up paying extra for them because they required custom design work, however Vision liked them enough to incorporate them into all future boats as a standard feature.

  • @gregorydamario7977
    @gregorydamario7977 2 роки тому

    I really like this boat. It would suit me and my wife for size and handling. The overhanging cabin top shades the ports. That is an excellent feature for a tropical use boat in that it cuts down on the greenhouse interior solar heating. You missed showing the transom scoops and the dingy arrangement. Two other things that were not essential to know but would have been interesting were the cabin roof cutouts. The portside cutout did not appear to have a slider that would close it off then allow the side curtain to match with the others. Or at least you did not show it. On the helm station side, does the weather curtain go all the way down to the deck? I did not see any attaching hardware down there. On the two bow seats, they should have arm rests on the forward side to prevent people from falling forward and off the boat and frankly, under the hulls and into the props. You are absolutely correct about having hand rails on the cabin top along the port and starboard walkways. I think having the corner of the TV right at head level in the nav station is a bad idea. Those things are easily fixable at minimal costs, so I am generally very impressed. This would certainly be a great coastal cruiser. It might be a good blue water cruiser, but you did not address tankage, range or how well it sails in light air or heavy seas. But, yours was not a technical evaluation. You show the general boat and if people are interested in more, they will contact the factory or a dealer. Very good job.

I suggest a tripod, and if that's a problem setting up in a boat, then at least use a monopod. I have a monopod to which I attached a bullhorn extension for a bicycle off to the side about a foot below the camera mount. That gives me three wide points in a plane, which provides for excellent stability, great panning stability and modest tilt capability.

    Beautiful layout but I wouldn't fancy sleeping over the engines while they are running. The heat and noise would be a worry. Personally for this reason I would have swapped the engine access to also accommodate the heads rather than the beds. Otherwise brilliant design. Oh and of course get those railings up on deck, starboard and portside for extra pedestrian safety. !

    Pretty impressive boat. 2 concerns for me are the engines under the beds, curious how loud they are if trying to sleep on passage as well as concerns about fumes in the bedroom space. Also, that forward locker is going to fill up real quick with sails since the port side one is dedicated to a bathroom so I can't imagine you'd be able to walk around in their much if you're stuffing sails down there.

    Great boat. Love the layout although I think the VIP over the bridge deck I would like much better as a master berth. Although I loved the master head and walk in closet! Lots to like. Not a big fan of the two climb in berths, especially in the master.

    We hebben allebei ervaring op een monohol. Dus kijken eigenlijk meer naar een Bavaria 55/57.
    Maar deze Cat ziet er ook heel goed uit. Als mooi en makkelijk bereikbaar, zoals de motoren.

    Love that they used as little wood as possible.

    • @FlesHBoX
      @FlesHBoX 3 роки тому +2

      And the wood they use is a reconstructed oak veneer. If a panel is damaged they can replace it with a new one that will match the rest perfectly. They are also oiled, not varnished, so it's easier to clean them up (I think they even include a citrus cleaning spray that you can use, as well as additional oil) and repair any staining.

    Great presentation! I loved the boat. Will surely be looking over it from now on. In my percepton I´d like to see more noise isolation under those aft births. But thats a detail that can be solved if needed. Great and smart layout. Well done Vision Yachts!! I may have lost info regarding rudders, keels etc. Great video

      We were really worried about this too, but it is surprisingly quiet underway. Since she is so light, 37 HP motors move her fine and generate less noise.

    • @FlesHBoX
      @FlesHBoX 3 роки тому +2

      I agree that the grab rails on the coach roof would be nice, however there is a strap there for clipping onto that can also be used as a grab. He just missed it in the video.

    • @OnANewTack
      @OnANewTack 3 роки тому +1

      You can actually grab unto the underside of the fiberglass overhang for a solid grip. Not as obvious as a SS grab rail, but if you know it is there it works well.

    I think it needs to be tested first, just in case, early models could have all kind of issues compared to the tested ones. I am talking about owners crossing oceans etc.

    Was there ladder access into that nice bow locker? Seems like a pain to haul gear all the way through the boat but maybe more of a pain climbing up or down through a small hatch...
    Overall, seems like a really nice layout. I just wish I could experience it...

    • @FlesHBoX
      @FlesHBoX 3 роки тому

      It's not really meant as a bow locker. The owner of Vision designed it as a workshop, having a dedicated to store spares and work on things. There is an opening hatch above, but I believe it's only a 40cm. That being said, Vision is incredibly open to customization for owners, so you could have them install a larger opening hatch there if you wanted. Hell, they would probably turn that space into pretty much anything you want, as long as the changes don't impact the structure.

    Thanks very much for the tour! Wasn't really sure what to think of the Vision 444 when I first saw it, but liking it more all the time.
    Definitely like all the storage and enclosable cockppit/aftdeck, but would probably stick with the original separate port aft shower instead of the pantry option.
    Would like to know how it sails. Sail plan looks a bit small, but as you note the quoted 9 ton lightship displacement is pretty light.
    It's possible the overhanging underside of the coachroof could be used as a handrail. Depends how it's designed.
    Be sure to check out the new Balance 442 also. First hulls are being built now, and the price and size of these and the Seawind 1370 are about the same. Balance is arguably more performance oriented, especially with daggerboards, but still very cruisable.
    I think I like the Balance design, layout, details, finishes best, in addition to the higher performance potential.
