  • A customer brought in a bonsai that they've had for many years and it has never been repotted. They asked for some help to upgrade this tree. At the current state, the tree is very much overgrown and the roots have tangled onto the drip tray. When trees are overgrown like this, they tend to shoot up vertically without much character or ramifications.
    There is a style of bonsai called Literati. The ancient Chinese Southern Song paintings are often credited as the inspiration for literati-style bonsai. These paintings featured impressions of tall, slender trees with minimal foliage. Today, the literati style mimics these ancient paintings to have trees with a slender trunk, contorted branches, and minimal foliage mass. It's a style that isn't always accepted by everyone, but it's a style nonetheless. Robert dives into the literati art style with this tree. Watch what happens.
    The book referenced in this video is written by Zhao Qingquan. You can get the book here.

    I have raw wire- no coating. Can copper wire be used?

    • @AsiaPacificGarden
      @AsiaPacificGarden  7 місяців тому +3

      In our experience, it's not recommended. Pure copper wires can transfer heat easily and can leave markings on the trunks and branches. We use aluminum coated wires.

    How long do you leave the wire?

    • @AsiaPacificGarden
      @AsiaPacificGarden  7 місяців тому +3

      @@krisgalusha9820there's no set time, but a good start is to check every six months. When doing literati, the most important part is to leave some space between the wire and the trunk so it has room to grow. Some trees grow faster than others. We've seen literati style hold the shape as fast as 6 months.

      @@krisgalusha9820 we've covered soil mixes in several of our videos, but we recently did a short that gives a better description.

    I tried from seed. Gave up. If i buy a plant what do you recommend? New England area. I’d like to try again but with a more established plant this time

    • @AsiaPacificGarden
      @AsiaPacificGarden  7 місяців тому

      @@cynthiaplatt5273 the best way to recommend a plant is to find the one that speaks to you. In one of our shorts, we mentioned why as a beginner, we don't recommend growing from seed and instead choosing a tree/plant that's already established. We like to look for trunks that have good movement.
