How to make Alberta Spruce (Christmas tree) bonsai forest.
Alberta Spruce trees are pretty common at garden centers, especially around this time of year. They are also what people use as Christmas trees for the holidays. We've been asked many times before if you can bonsai a Christmas tree. The answer is absolutely and Robert found these trees at a local nursery back in August. It's regular nursery stock and anybody can create a bonsai.
Most spruce trees grow vertically up and tend to be a formal upright when turned into a bonsai if it's a single tree. You can also gather a few spruce trees and create a bonsai forest for more character. In this video, Robert goes into detail on how to create an Alberta Spruce bonsai forest. He uses a shallow marble plate that is often used in Chinese Penjing and explains in detail how to create a penjing forest using these materials.
Why buy a Christmas tree that you're going to throw away at the end of the season when you can create one that you can have for many years and pass on? Watch and learn a new technique!

How to bring your dead bonsai back to life.

The dead tree belongs to our friend Wesley and it's been in his possession since 1985. This particular bonsai is more like a family member to him and he was sad to see it go. There was a terrible fungus that hit the PNW in the spring of 2024 that wiped out many trees in this area. Wesley originally wanted to toss the dead tree and plant a new one in, but Robert had a different idea. Robert knew...
Making a Western Red Cedar bonsai tree from raw material, Tanuki style.

Robert transforms an ordinary Western Red Cedar into a tanuki style bonsai. Our friend Brian got these from his friend where these cedars have been eaten by elk for many years in the yard. Brian thought they would make a good forest since he had two, but it wasn't quite enough to make a proper forest. So Robert studies the tree and decides that a tanuki style would be best. What is a tanuki and...

Great video! Also if you wait until after Christmas those trees are super cheap. I paid 4 dollars a tree last year at Fred Myers. That's good tree savings! Thanks for the video!
@@tommytacoma8247 exactly! You can get some good materials for CHEAP at grocery stores after the holidays.

So nice....🤙👋
A bonsai is a tree or shrub grown in a pot. Good pruners work with the tree, and don’t force branches with wires and ropes. It is a process.
And my friends said I was crazy for looking at the home depot tiny Christmas trees for material 😤

Great job, gents. We're doing a family Alberta Spruce bonsai thing for thanksgiving. Should be fun. Also, love the Rock sayings....lol.
@@NoCoastGolf what a fun family activity! How many trees are you usin- IT DOESNT MATTER HOW MANY TREES YOU'RE USING!
One comment, aren't a bit smaller branches important because they make the trunk appear even larger, and they are easier to work on? I was watching a Peter Chan video yesterday and he emphasized the importance of small branches. Thanks for the video!
@@AlecShernAPS yes, smaller branches do make the tree look bigger, but you wouldn't want the lowest branch to be smaller than the ones high above. The lower the branch, the older it is, so that's why we tend to remove small low branches. It also depends on the style you're creating. Forest groupings can lean away from traditional rules a bit as group plantings can hide minor details. If you prune back too much, it doesn't feel like a forest. If you don't prune back enough, it gets too crowded.
I hope you will show us when it is settled in the future, and looking like it always been this way. Thanks for the instruction.
@@tinekejoldersma we will definitely provide an update when we can!
Thank you both for sharing your knowledge! Thanks to your videos I succesfully pruned the two beautiful but overgrown maples in my yard this fall after ten years of neglect. They look so much better! Y'all gave me the confidence and know-how to get it done. I am def inspired to try this project next. Do you have any suggestions for sourcing slabs/flat containers? Thank you!!!
@@TheMurpleMan that's great to hear! We're glad to be able to share our techniques with you. As for finding flat marble containers, those are pretty hard to find. You would want to look for a bonsai/pending specialty store near you or find a bonsai club member. Slab rocks can be a bit easier depending on location. You would want to look for landscaping companies as these slabs are used for building large aquascapes. If you're in our area, we have both slabs and marble plates available.

@@tinekejoldersma can't wait to see what it looks like during spring/summer!
I was taught not to prune out more than 30% per year, seems like more than that was taken off this tree. Was I taught wrong?
@@ksully6551 you weren't necessarily taught wrong. The 30% rule is taught because that can be applied to virtually every tree. For example, we would never prune this much on a black pine. Maples, however, we have pruned much more and it's perfectly safe to do. You just don't want to prune too many of the thick trunks as that can dry out the tree. We generally only remove 2-3 big trunks when doing major cuttings.
what a deafferents
Robert, Nolan asked you if you can use the moss from the tree. I didn't hear your answer. I think you told me before that I should only use moss that is NOT growing on a tree. Is that correct?
@@The1superrussell it depends on what the purpose of the moss is. If it's for bonsai decoration, we don't recommend it because it's too dry.

Great job guys, you made that tree very very happy. Now we can see it’s full potential. Thank you.
I moved into my house 14 years ago and it had a Japanese Maple. It looked like it had never been pruned and the tree was not looking good . About the second fall I lived in the house I got underneath the tree and pulled all the dead branches off just like you did to this one. It bloomed so much better the next spring. Each year I just do a little pruning and try to remove as much dead leaves as I can. This weekend I'll get out and do it again to make the tree healthy for next spring. Great video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Saludos
@@Jose-J-U great points! We can definitely see your ideas. Robert went with the asymmetrical look because he wanted to achieve a windswept design. If we planted the tree towards the center, the weight of the whole piece would be shifted to one side. We still left a lot of ramification and wiring work for the owner to do when they get home, so what you see here is not the final results. Thank you for sharing!
