Stargazer - How to Help a Chick With Wry or Crooked Neck

  • It happens. A chick that can't hold its neck up and falls backwards and maybe even walks backwards. The good news it can often be treated and it's easy to do. We had a "stargazer" in our last hatch. See what we did and what happened.

    This was SOOOOOO helpful. We had a chick hatch with this stargazer syndrome and curled feet. It couldn't walk or stand and its head was nearly completely backwards, I thought it had something broken inside until I saw your video. All he did was lie on his back with his head twisted to look at his feet the first night and then yesterday I started giving him sugar in the water I was feeding him with the eye dropper and after I saw your video I went searching for the Nutri-Drench. Unfortunately we don't seem to have it here and I went looking for Save-a-chick also with no luck. I came across someone else's video mentioning adding salt (not table salt) and apple cider vinegar to sugar water and that is what I did. Until I saw your video I didn't even know this was a "thing" and I gave him this last night with some food mashed up in this formula as well and today he was standing and his head is in the proper position and his toes have nearly fully uncurled. I think he just might make it, I am so happy. He is even eating and drinking on his own now. I am very happy I found your video or I may have given up on him.

    I just saw this is an actual thing and not a deformity. I have a chick that’s already a week old and it eats and drinks fine. It’s actually fixing itself a little bit. It runs around and eats and drinks fine. My question is can I give it some if this and will it fix it or am I too late? Again it eats and drinks fine.

    • @ChickenHues
      @ChickenHues  2 роки тому

      That’s great that it’s doing good! You can try- it certainly won’t hurt it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I think it depends on the cause. I’d love to hear if it fixed it!

    Couple hours old, black chick, stargazing just as bad if not a little worse than yours, falling over backwards, etc. Hopefully I get the same results you did. He is separated in his own brooder with a few drops of diluted nutridrench in him and a timer set. Thanks so much for your video, hoping for the best

    Hi I was wondering if that’s normal ?When I found him about 2 days ago all alone he was fine and he could walk and eat & drink but today when I woke up I went to check up on him and he appeared with the stargazer neck or wryneck I’m really worried he does still eat and drink & also I immediately bought polyvisol supposedly helps, but I was wondering did the chick made it thorough 🥺
    I really want the chick to make it🥺

    our egg are hatching today. and one is peeping in the egg any tips or concerns

    • @ChickenHues
      @ChickenHues  4 роки тому

      Nope! No concerns! They peep a lot while hatching. They peep in the egg before they “pip” through the shell- and that let’s you know they’re getting ready. I’d encourage you to be patient, because it can be 12 or more hours from when they first poke that first hole in the shell (pip) to starting to hatch any further. Trying to help them is often a death sentence for the chick. Keep us posted!!! How exciting!!!

    If chicks are being born with a deficiency does that not indicate that the mother has a poor diet? luckily my chicks are in tip top condition, their diet is as varied as is humanly possible as I'm aiming for the correct nutrition rather than a huge volume to get them as fat as possible... My quail are pets so I'm not concerned with their weight and the number of eggs they lay...although I do want eggs 300 a year seems extremely excessive for such a small animal.

    • @ChickenHues
      @ChickenHues  Рік тому

      It may indicate nutritional issues in the parents. It may also be a problem during incubation. It sounds like you have an excellent plan going!

      I’m sorry you had trouble hearing it. Dilute some Nutri-Drench to a tea color. Every few hours use an eye dropper and try to get the chick to drink it. Be careful not to squirt it down it’s throat or it can aspirate the liquid. I hope this helps.
