  • FULL FEEDING. How to Feed a Chicken With WRY NECK | Crook Neck | Crooked Neck | Stargazing | Twisted Neck
UPDATE: I switched from the spoon to a deep silicone measuring spoon and cut the feeding time in half!
It can be really scary when one of our babies gets sick. But if caught fairly early this is an easy fix with a little tender TLC and some quiet time to recuperate. I make sure that the chicken can easily feed itself before returning them to the flock. Then at least a week to make sure there is full recovery and the chicken is getting enough to eat. Checking their crop nightly during nightly chores to be sure it is full is a great way to be sure.
    ABOUT US
We are Bill and Rebecca and this is Birch Moon Farm. A simple living homestead/farmstead where we try to practice a simply sustainable lifestyle. In 2015 we purchased 5+ acres in the Vermont hills and for the first 18 months lived in a 250 sq ft RV, while we built our own house (with lots of help from amazing friends and family), 3 sheds, a driveway, water well, septic, 2 chicken coops.
So what made us do all this in our late 40's early 50's? Well, in 2013 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer and mostly everything that goes with that type of diagnosis. And this all happened 6 months after our wedding. So after about 10 months of treatments, a couple of surgeries, chemo and radiation, we had had enough. We no longer subscribed to what people call the "American Dream". And we didn't want to wait until we were in our late 60's to live our dream. So we sold or gave away everything we owned, and took all our assets and started to live our dream where we would try to be as self sufficient as possible. Do we always succeed? Nope! But we try! And in the end, isn't that all that matters?
Birch Moon Farm is now home to 2 humans, 2 cats, one dog and lots of silkie chickens! Follow along with us while we build our homestead one project at a time.

UPDATE (JUNE 29, 2021): This baby girl did not recover. After 6 weeks of treatment, and no improvement, and with a heavy heart, I did have her euthanized. I also had another from this batch of chicks I bought, that had the same thing, and again, over time determined that he wasnt going to recover. I have learned since filming this video that there are quite a few reasons chickens get Wry Neck, one of them being genetic, or something they ingested was toxic, among some of the reasons. I can only guess, what the cause, but have sold the remainder of this batch with the information provided to the buyer what happened just in case genetics was playing a role. I have had no other occurrences since that time and hopefully wont ever again.

For future reference hun ~ give ur bird selenium for one day if they have the kneck. Only give them a small amount. Tractor supply only carried the goat kind of selenium. Only give them two pecks onto the top of the tube 2xs in one day ONLY. It cures the rye kneck & improves all their joints. Be very cautious how much u give them as it can be toxic to birds or even humans. So a Very tiny amount goes a long way. Do NOT give them it for more then one day. Only one day two doses. It cures it. But if u give ‘em to much ut will result in passing

Thank you so much for this helpful video. I’ve been raising chicks for the past 7 yrs: had no idea Wry neck was a thing and that it is treatable. We found 1 of our 13 wk old chicks face down in the dirt and when I picked her up her neck was completely loose/wobbly/unsupported. Her eyes were barely open and she was breathing but very shallow. Unfortunately it was a hot day in the 90’s. I brought her in the cool house and placed her in a box with shavings. I felt horrible that I did not know how to help her so I prayed & asked God to either take her home with him or teach me what I need to know to help her. The google search for info & help began, thankfully your video was the 1st one I watched. I used your exact recipe, egg yolk, chick crumble, & nutri drench. I massaged and supported her neck, she ate & drank water w/ vitamins & electrolytes. The next morning she was sitting w/ her head up. I gave her some more of your recipe and by the afternoon feeding she was full of energy trying to get out of the box. I moved her back outside to a temp kennel/coop adjacent to the rest of the flock. She is healed and She is thriving! We named her Gracie :)

I have my patient on my lap while watching this and she is answering every time she hears the trilling in the video. It’s the calmest she has been since I removed her from her siblings.

I hatched 20 chicks in my incubator, after one week girl developed ryeneck. I went two tractor supply bought selenium and vitamin e in a tube made for goats, I fed her to pea size drops 2 times a day. She made big improvements everyday I did this every day for a month and she's 100% back to normal, acting like a little chick again

We have a mixed silky & red hen that had this. She was determined to eat and I gave her & her sisters greens, chick(non medicated) as well as a 5 grain mix we make ourselves. She couldn't perch because she was always dizzy and would fall over like this so she stayed on the floor of the henhouse. She finally got better and we called her wiggles. She even perches on her own now, laying regularly. She has 4 sisters similar looks with a poofy head and more normal feathers on their wings. Three are brama/silky white & black & one is just like her with orange to reddish color. All healthy now. Also 3 caught colds sneezing then wheezing really bad over a 24hr period. Starting with a chirping sneezing, just a little, but got worse very quickly. We gave them electrolytes in water & eucalyptus tincture on their throat & dribbling in their water to help them breathe. Also dabbing on their beaks. Antibiotics in a syringe too. All seem healthy now. One even went broody then hatching 3 Maran mixed chicks, but stopping being motherly earlier than a regular silky & the chicks formed a tight bond hanging out together from the rest of the family!

My chicken was on death's door today. I searched UA-cam to find anything that would work today. I came across this video and went to the nearest health food store.I got the vitamin e with selenium and mixed it with egg yolk like you said and with rooster booster. I fed it to her with a syringe. She ate a little bit and went to sleep and two hours later I came into the room and she was standing on her own. I did make her a next support out of foam insulation that you would wrap a pipe with, like a pool noodle. This video saved my chicken today thank you.

I was treating for cocci with corid & it depletes their nutrition. Treatment was supposed to be three days and at the end of the third day one of the chicks had wry neck. On the fourth day I could give poultry cell so that boosted her really quick.

Have about a year and a half white silky just like yours. Same symptoms. Will try this feeding. How did your turn out and how did you prevent it? We've been having very hot weather. Wondered if she's dehydrated too...

Do you notice if they eat egg yolk they may eat their own eggs later? I have a pullet that isn't exactly why neck although people are telling me it is in groups on Facebook but it's more of a bobble head that she loses control over and sometimes when she twitches or turns it will continue moving even after she stopped if that makes sense. She has no problem eating and drinking in her own and getting around and even flying up to roost but just has this bobble head.. also I noticed it around month 2-3 not at birth. Any advice? :)

How much vitamin e and b1 can you give them in a day. I have a 2 month old silkie. I have 400ui vitamin e capsules and vitamin b1 tablets (not sure the mg it doesn't say). I mash those together with some nutridrench water and chick starter food and will feed it half in the morning and the other half during the day and feed it chick crumble with water throughout the day to make sure it's getting water and food. It's head hangs between its legs and it will spin in circles sometimes 🥺 its very sad to see and I'm hoping I can get it out of this and back to normal.

    • @birchmoonfarm101

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. I gave the E and B1 3 times a day. I hope your baby made it. I have only saved 1 out of 3 😟

@@birchmoonfarm101 so I can give it the 400ui and b1 3 times a day? I've only been giving it 1 capsule of both a day and then just feed it regular feed with nutridrench water to keep it hydrated. It's definitely growing but not very much progress in the wry neck. It's almost 4 months old now and idk what to do if it doesn't get better but I don't want to give up on it.

    • @birchmoonfarm101

If you havent seen a real improvement in the last couple of weeks, then I would increase to 2 times a day and in a week no improvement, add the 3rd. I have also heard that people use Selenium paste (made for goats in a tube). Just a bead on your finger daily. That might help too. You can also add scrambled eggs or a raw egg yolk to give more vitamins. Mine go crazy over the raw egg yolk. Keep up with the Nutridrench and water in the food and you can also add the Chick-Saver for electrolytes too. FYI, Wry Neck is not only a vitamin deficiency. I have read it can be hereditary, as well as a head injury. I am so sorry, it is a hard thing to get them through, but I really hope your baby improves quickly.
