Saw them in Miami with my gal pals. I can still see my best friend, now gone, bouncing in her seat next to me as the entire place belted out “ Saturday Night”. Just a group for fun teen times and good memories for those of us lucky enough to be in high school in the 70’s❤️

I think 'The Rollers' were probably the biggest band in the UK for a few years in the 70s ..... appealing mainly to the teenage girl market.. But they did make some great pop records.

They had a very limited appeal, mostly to teen girls from 13 to 16, on that basis it is ridiculous to suggest they were the biggest band in the UK.

The Bay City Rollers were huge around the world, not just in the UK and US, but were massively robbed of their income, particularly Eric Faulkner and Stuart Wood - both guitarists - who were the main songwriters (though this song is a Four Seasons cover), and Leslie McKeown, the lead singer, who was robbed of performer's rights by their manager who died a very rich man.
Check out some of their Faulkner/Wood penned stuff.

Yes! Some one else commented about Shakin' Stevens who you haven't listened to yet. He had great songs with "Oh Julie", "This old house" and "You drive me crazy" which was probably his biggest hit. You guys will love him as he has Elvis vibes. Also another band you haven't done from the 70's is "Hot Chocolate". They had hits with "It started with a kiss", "You sexy thing", "So you win again" and "Everyone's a winner" ❤

Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. As others have said, this band were absolutely huge worldwide and certainly made tartan more popular. I have a memory when I was young of many people on TV, mainly girls, in tartan outfits and they were obsessed by these boys. As a fellow Scot, I'm glad I finally got to see them perform live in concert at The OVO Hydro in Glasgow on the 11th of December 2016. They were certainly still popular that night and the Glaswegian women were as wild as ever. Æx 🙏

Try one with Duncan as lead when they went as the Rollers. Turn on the Radio, Hello and Welcome Home, or Elevator come to mind. On a personal note , Alan Longmuir(Bassist) was a class act. We met him at a fest once then a week later he walked into a pub we was at and instead of walking by, he smiled, came over, bought a round , and chatted with us.

The talk about the song's lyrics and the twist later on in the song that he was already married reminded me of the A Scottish Soldier song, which by chance we'd encountered at school the year before this song was number 1! The one that goes "oh,soldier, soldier, will you marry me,with your musket, fife and drum..."

These guys got ripped off by manager and record execs and ended up flat broke. You should see one of their live performances, top of the pops lets say, insane. Teenage girls loosing their freakin minds.
You are right Jay, song originally cut in 1965 by The Four Seasons.
A more mature side of BCR? The Way I Feel Tonght is good.

Once you finish with the 70s if you want a great Scottish band then try Texas, their debut album Southside was such an excellent blues/country /rock album and so good for a debut album. Fronted by the divine Sharleen Spiteri, her voice is so rich.

This was their biggest hit in the UK. It stayed number one for six weeks. These guys were HUGE for a few years back in the 70s. But they had really bad management and he took all their money, and the lads were left penniless.
Btw....This sounds "old" cos it's a cover of a 1965 hit by The Four Seasons."I Only Wanna Be With You" (also covered by Eurythmics in the 80s) was a cover of Dusty Springfields 1964 hit record. ❤

BCR actually got banned in the UK at one point. Sadly some members are now gone. Les McKeown about two years ago, he was the lead singer. The Faulkner and Woods writing were cheated out of the rights to their own music. Check out the album The Game, so really great adult oriented music.

Back where I lived, the band's fan base was 99% 10-15 year old girls who had a (one-sided) long distance crush on band members. Any guy admitting that he liked BCR would have immediately lost all his street cred and considered to have testosterone level of exactly zero.
By the way, this song has an interesting role in the very successful and funny Rom-Com "Love Actually", which I recommend You to check out.

These guys fell into that bubble gum pop image along with the Osmonds. In fact, you'll find many of the teen magazines of the day with both groups on the cover. The Osmonds had a Saturday morning cartoon show and a few years later the Bay City Rollers hosted their own Saturday morning show by Sid & Marty Krofft. Absolutely you need to check out "The Way I Feel tonight", "You Made Me Believe in Magic", "Money Honey", and "Shang-A-Lang".

You said it sounds 60s. That is very likely due to it being a cover of the original version by Franky Valley & The Four Seasons.
The version you played was in fact the U.K. single which was the BCRs first U.K. No1.
It was never released as a US single but was incredibly on their US debut album, with added violins giving the Phil Spector Wall of Sound feel.

If I'm right, there have only been two 'manias' in pop history - Beatle Mania and Roller Mania. Screaming girls followed both groups. The BCRs were literally huge in the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, and Australia.
Bye Bye Baby was no.1 in the UK for 6 weeks. When they went to the USA, their management released Saturday Night as their first single there. The Rollers couldn't understand it, why not release Bye Bye Baby? The American management team said "We can't do that, it's too well known as a Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons song!"
