I'm 55 in Australia, was a huge Bay City Rollers fan in the 70s! Thanks for the memory. They were pretty squeaky clean. The members that I remember were: Alan Longmuir - backing and occasional lead vocals, bass, rhythm guitar, piano, accordion (1964-1976, 1978-1981, 1982-1983, 1990, 1996, 1999-2000, 2015-2016; died 2018) Derek Longmuir - drums, percussion (1964-1981, 1982-1983, 1996) Eric Faulkner - backing and occasional lead vocals, lead and rhythm guitars, violin, mandolin, bass (1972-1981, 1982-1985, 1990, 1996, 1999-2000) Les McKeown - lead vocals, occasional guitar (1973-1978, 1982-1985, 1996, 1999-2000, 2015-2016; died 2021) Stuart "Woody" Wood - backing and occasional lead vocals, rhythm and lead guitars, keyboards, bass, mandolin (1974-1981, 1982-1985, 1990, 1996, 1999-2000, 2015-2016, 2018-present).
The Bay City Rollers were a great pop band. I learned how to spell Saturday from this song. I actually still have my 45 of this song. They even had a Saturday Morning TV show.
@@elizabethfranco1284 I loved all those weird Krofft shows. Most people nowadays probably only know Land of the Lost, or HR Pufnstuf. But those were some really weird and funny kids shows.
I fell in love with these guys as they are Scottish and I love all things from that country.Met them in person in San Francisco California way back and got autographs and photos and such memories
I love these guys! They were my 1st concert back in the 70's. We listened to their records at sleepovers. This is not psychedelic music. This is fun music.
This hit reached no. 1 in the USA during the mid-70s. The group is from Edinburgh, Scotland. Notice the backdrop with the All-Seeing Eye, Jacob's Ladder, & more. This group had its own TV Series for about a year or two.
WOW! The Rollers were my early teens. I wore tartan trews, carried tartan scarves and was absolutely in love with Eric 'Faulkner' ( he's at the back) My friends and I would rush home from school to watch 'Shang-a-Lang' their afternoon TV show, and we would sit in front of the TV screaming and crying. Eric is now 68 and still performing, and I think still very hot for a man of roughly my age... I'm 61, he's 68. 😍💕♥
I've spotted Eric a few times over the last 4 years or so in my hometown of Hawick in the Scottish Borders. He's friends with a lady who presents a 70's show on a community radio station who lives just outside Hawick.
I was a 70's kid in Edinburgh, Scotland. These guys were huge at the time. Truely the first real follow-on from the Beatles-mania. Shang-a-lang should be the next one to check out.
OMG!! Time traveled back to my youth just now! These guys were the Backstreet Boys of the mid 70s. Nothing heavy or thought provoking just fun to dance & sing along.
Talking about reliving my teenage time............. I remember hearing this on the radio and being played at the Skating Ring on a Saturday night 💖🎶😎🥰🎉✌️ GOOD TIMES 💯
you guys are hilarious. this is baked into my brain to this day because it was such a huge hit when it came out and my sister got the record and played it over and over and over again. but somehow I don't mind it. it's simple and catchy and they were from Scotland which kind of makes it cool. but I know what you mean, I've listened to a lot of music from before my time so early 60s on back. I've listened to a lot of music from the '20s 30s and 40s and I know a lot of history about it and I talked to a lot of relatives. but I'm pretty sure I will never fully know what it was like to experience those things for the first time like they did. and just the subtle ways that Society was different than values were a little different. so I understand completely what you mean. but I do think there is a lot more media and content around now from say the 70s and the more of it you watch and listen to and read comments about and look things up, the closer you will get to having a real feel for it I think.
When I was in college, I went to a 70's dance and they played this song. It was really cool hearing everyone shout "S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y!" and stomp their feet. :)
The Bay City Rollers were one of my favourite bands back in the 70s, still have a couple of their albums. Unfortunately lead singer Les McKeown passed away last year. RIP
My mom grew up listening to The Bay City Rollers to the point where she made her own tartan trimmed clothing. She passed that love to me when I was really young, and then I turned it up to eleven over the last fifteen years by introducing her to around thirty other Scottish, and Irish groups, though these groups are a bit more traditional in their music styles.
Lex is right about them being squeaky clean. They even had a short-lived Saturday morning kid's show I watched every week! And the stuttering thing... "My Generation" by The Who, 1965.
Wow!! I can remember being on the school bus and when this song came on the radio, every last person stopped talking to clap their hands and spell out S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y. So fun!!
This was such a fun song and we loved it. yes this was more for us innocent kids who just loved dancing and hanging out, its a feel good song I can tell you 70s were so fun , and you both would have loved it for it was about just feeling naturally good and music , and hanging out with friends, skating, movies, and getting into a little mischief , you know sneaking out to a ball game or something, Sunny days , moonlite nights and cruising and buying newest recort or teen beat magazine. It was about simple life of fun and innocence
@@stanflahaut1893 You are right Stan I am very sentimental and love when the guys I dated did stuff like that writing me love poems , one guy even took a whole verse from Shakespeare and put my name in it . I don't know who first did the stuttering thing in a pop/rock song. The first that comes to mind is Roger Daltrey of The Who in My Generation (1965), but I'll guess there must be earlier examples.
Actually love this song and it's very nostalgic for me. It brings back an era, my youthful era, that's gone down the stream of time. But back then it was fun, exciting, and happening. You never think how what's 'now' today is tomorrow's "old-fashioned". And yet ... so it is.
This reaction was great, I loved the smile it put on both your faces. I was in like 4th grade when this came out! Such a cool song. My older brother was so mean about them! He called them The Gay City Rollers 😆 Good times.
At one point shortly after they became well known, a lot of people thought they would become the next Beatles. They definitely had a Beatles like following.
So insane! This is the first concert I ever went to. I was 5 years old and it was 1974. I can remember the smell of weed in the air, but I didn't know what it was at the time. What can I say, it was the '70s. Love you all's reaction videos!
I remember listening to this on my parents 8-track player when I was sitting in the basement playing with my G.I.Joe with the kung-fu grip. I was 6 years old....wow, what a flashback.
These guys had a string of catchy songs in the 70s that are worth checking out .. "Bye Bye Baby" was probably their biggest hit and is excellent .. They did a good version too of the Dusty Springfield song "I Only Want To Be With You" .. "Money Honey" was one of their songs with a raunchier style .. Definitely had a feel good vibe about them !
I went mental over their variety show way back when, I think I was boy crazy like Tina Belcher when I was little 😂😂 Such a fun song, reminds me of roller skating... ♥️✌
Omg, BCR! Teen and tween girls in several countries rode hormonal waves of Rollermania in the 70s, had all the records, the teeny bopper mags, and the Rollers' faces stuck all over their walls and notebooks. Their Scottish accents thrilled us, and the tartan was beloved. I started 6th grade in 1976. Within the first week, all of us girls knew who loved which Roller. Mine was Woody, for the record, hahaha.
Just because it is a 70's song, don't Stereotype the 70's with all being in drugs. This song, if you heard the words are telling about chilling at a football game and after the game hanging at the pizza parlor, and burger stand hang outs.
Ahhhh BCR! I was absolutely head over heels in love with them in the 70s. SATURDAY NIGHT was their only #1 hit in the U.S. but so many good tunes. Dedication was my favorite with Ian Mitchell lead (R.I.P.) R.I.P. Les & Alan as well. 💔
Bay City Rollers are Scottish pop rock band. They also were known as The Saxons, The Rollers, The New Rollers. They were active 1964-1981, 1982-1987, 1990, 1996, 1999-2000 (Genres: Rock, Pop music, Pop rock, Glam rock, Power rock, Bubblegum rock) Had worldwide popularity was among teens in the 70s. On stage they wore some tartan(plaid) on their clothes. In reference to them being from Scotland. Band members Alan Longmuir died in 2018, ( Alan did 300 hours of community service after admitting to possessing child pornography). Ian Mitchell & Les McKeon died in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Les McKeon said in October 2019 that the band did not actually play on many of their hits. Because the producers would not spend more time than they needed in those days to get the sound they wanted. So they hired session musicians who could do it faster. The Les McKeon was the only one from the band who was allowed in recording sessions. This caused animosity with him and the band. The band broke up in 1987. They sold 120 million records worldwide. They got name Bay City Rollers. First it The Rollers. They wanted a more powerful American name. Derek Longmuir threw a dart on a US map. It landed on Arkansas, didn't like threw again, it landed on Bay City, Michigan. They were called the "tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh" and " biggest group since the Beatles"
This song is also featured on one of my favorite time travel movies, a spoof of the 1970s called "The Spirit of '76". It featured David Cassidy, Leif Garrett, Rob Reiner, DEVO, and many other 1970s celebrities in the cast. In the movie, a group of time travellers from 2176 try to go back to 1776, to search for the Constitution. Their time machine malfunctions, however, and they wind up in 1976, during the Bicentennial.
I remember when I first heard this song! 1976 in Sitka, Alaska at a pizza and arcade place During a little league all-star tournament! Never forgot it..✌❤🤘
My aunt & uncle owned a record company which released compilation albums and they would occasionally send us their surplus material. Our favorite was called “Knockout” & this was the first song on that album. Good times!!!
Lex's reaction @ :18 second mark is exactly the reaction that this song was intended to illicit! I remember actually watching the show this video was recorded from.
They used to be on an after school program. They played music and TV shows like Land Of The Lost, Far Out Space Nuts, Wonderbug, Dr. Shrinker and more. Kroft SuperShow or something like that. Watched it every day after school in the 70s.
Over here in the UK, the following the rollers got was as close to beatlemania we've ever had. I was only young then, but all the older kids had the trousers and sewed tartan into everything they owned.
The Bay City Rollers were Scotland's answer to the Beatles, they had just as many fans world wide as the Beatles. I saw footage from the 70's of them being mobbed by screaming girls, teenagers in Japan walked around wearing tartan as well as many other teenagers in countries all over the world. The 1970's was basically the decade of the tartan.
If you've watched the scenes at airports when The Beatles arrived anywhere, it was almost identical for a time when these guys were huge in many countries. Tartan exploded as a fashion statement everywhere, and the whole thing rather bemused those of us who grew up on The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd or whatever. Not my scene at all but millions loved them, so we have to be thankful it didn't last like those others I mentioned 😂
The 70s was kind of the same as today but different. Technology didnt exist like today. No cell phones, no computers, no cable tv. You would go to the store and buy vinyl records either 45s or albums. You couldn't go on UA-cam and listen to your favorite song. It is also why people like you and so many reactors are just now being exposed to music from so many great artists. But in the 70s people didnt feel like they were missing out on technology because we didnt know what it was. So I love watching people react to so many of these songs and artists I've heard so many times. As far as the song Saturday Night goes its was such a huge hit at the time.
Omg! This was my older sisters favorite band! I was 11 and went with her and her friend to the concert and it was so funny watching them chase the limo as the band left the arena. My sister and her friend were hanging on to the bumper along with other screaming teenage girls and my sister let go and was rolling on the gravel road! 😂 😂😂 They also wore plaid everything! Ah the memories. 😂 Thanks for picking this one! 🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South florida! I used to watch their TV show when I was a kid. They're kind of like Menudo. They keep getting rid of people and then bringing in different guys, and the band just kept going. Haven't heard this song and ages. Thank you for doing a reaction to this song! You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
My family lived in England, 1975 into 1976-when I was 12-13. I was a huge Elton John and Stevie Wonder fan upon arrival. Every single one of the friends I made was a Bay City Rollers fanatic. It was the 90s before I could hear this song and not run to the source to shut it off (music being central to my existence, LOL).
My exposure to the Bay City Rollers was through a Saturday morning TV show lol...they just did some silly stuff and showed clips from concerts. Very light entertainment.

A roller skating party with pizza and chips
Over here in the UK, the following the rollers got was as close to beatlemania we've ever had. I was only young then, but all the older kids had the trousers and sewed tartan into everything they owned.
They made me proud to be from Bay City!
Oh my gosh, I used to love them. Wow, that's an oldie.
The beginning of the intentional boy bands
Fun times and memories.
Had the single when I was a kid in 1975. Loved these guys along with Elton lol.
Nothing tops the 70’s for incredible hits! ✌️❤️
It didn't hit The States until 1976
@@TonyM1961 released as a US single in '75.
A true classic

1st, yep bubble rock...it will not ruin my morning...lol...a hui hou
The 70s was kind of the same as today but different. Technology didnt exist like today. No cell phones, no computers, no cable tv. You would go to the store and buy vinyl records either 45s or albums. You couldn't go on UA-cam and listen to your favorite song. It is also why people like you and so many reactors are just now being exposed to music from so many great artists. But in the 70s people didnt feel like they were missing out on technology because we didnt know what it was. So I love watching people react to so many of these songs and artists I've heard so many times. As far as the song Saturday Night goes its was such a huge hit at the time.
My sister had their posters all over her walls lol. Thanks for the memory :D
I remember huge hype about these guys being "The New Beatles".
I remember thinking they're not even the new Archies.
This inspired The Ramones to write the "Hey Ho, Let's Go" chant used in the The Blitzkrieg Bop.
there's something to be said about bubblegum pop. It's just damn catchy you gotta love it. Who didn't love this song and the Archies. haha.
This song always reminds me of the Mike Myers movie "So I Married an Axe Murderer". Good times.
This song was from before my time, but I've always loved it.
Sounds like they could have played at Arnold’s on Happy Days with Weezer. LOL
My exposure to the Bay City Rollers was through a Saturday morning TV show lol...they just did some silly stuff and showed clips from concerts. Very light entertainment.

One of these guys was in a band from South Africa with Trevor Rabin of Yes. They were called Rabbitt & were very successful.
Great pop
