As an organist I would like to mention that Spanish cathedrals contain two or more organs located on opposite sides of the central aisle. They are facing each other for antiphonal effects and feature horizontal trumpet pipes which speak right into the center of the building. Really exciting to hear if one gets a chance!
Santa María de la sede is my favorite. The mix of Gothic and Islamic architecture is just too cool. It really gives the structure its own unique flair. Its my favorite cathedral🇪🇸❤️
I thought the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC was the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. Guess I was wrong - been to Seville and the cathedral - the Giralda s a gorgeous touch. I have a souvenir replica of it.
Thanks for the notes (in more ways than one) about that one Cathedral Organ. Now, please, it's time to get "organised", for "Notable Cathedral Organs of the World". Thanks in advance, of that effort, if you can pull it off!
Great work as a summary, although the narration is often hurried.I also miss a couple of points. If I'm not wrong, the choir facade in Ely Cath. is totally unique in its strongly bent structures instead of perpendicular, and the reason why Albi Cath. looks like a fortress is sorely missing: it is so because it was intended to be a fortress, a fortress, in its most basic meaning, of catholicism against the Albigeois, or the Kathar movement, in times of medieval religious upheavals.
Salisbury is amazing. The cathedral itself is gorgeous but the spire, the tallest in Britain makes it stand out among the others. the flat terrain surrounding the cathedral and city allows the spire to be seen for miles around. And as bonus Stonehenge is nearby - don't miss that either though you can no longer walk through the structure because of vandalism - it is cordoned off. You can walk around it though.
St Peter's Basillica of course, widely regarded as the world's most impressive church, yet somehow omitted from your top twenty (which I am nevertheless enjoying.)
@florent72 true, but if you watched part one in this series, it finished up with the basillica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, also not a Cathedral. I think St Peter's is no less exceptional a church, even if I probably prefer the Sagrada.
Hagia Sophia is included in this video: 10 OLDEST BUILDINGS Still in Use Today ua-cam.com/video/JgM2lFWAuiA/v-deo.html. As one of the oldest and most important buildings.
Did you, "VG", or any of the rest of you, see those grand American TV Miniseries's, "The Winds of War", & "War and Remembrance"? The Duomo de Siena was a major "character" in those, as surely as Robert Mitchum played one!!
I suggested the Malaga cathedral in the comments of your last video. It’s missing one of its large spires because the money intended to be spent on its completion was donated to the American Revolutionists in their efforts to defeat the British. Approximately 125 years later, American President Teddy Roosevelt heard of the unfinished spire and offered to finish the project. The Malaga people declined, deciding they liked their little place in American history.
My thoughts exactly - Beam me up, Scotty! It also looks like an upside down ice cream cone. Since there are modern cathedrals in these videos Coventry Cathedral in England may as well be shown though its architecture is polarizing to say the least. Part of that is due to the fact that it was built within the ruins of the old cathedral destroyed in WW2.
If . . . you ever choose to profile Birmingham Cathedral, eponymously named for The City, have I GOT a mindblowing factoid about it, for you!! None other than Dr. Anthony ("Tony") F. Iommi, PhD. (Honorary Doctorate conferred upon him by Coventry University--he's also a part time Faculty Member!), Heavy Metal Guitarist Extraordinaire, founder of the band Black Sabbath, was commissioned by the Dean, to compose a Liturgical Piece for use in REGULAR ROTATION, in its Orders of Worship Services. The original version, of course, features a lot of his "ominous" electric guitar "tricks", with a separate orchestral track, and Men's and Boy's Choirs. To my ear, it sounds extremely Reverential, Meditative, and UPLIFTING. After a little exposure to organ playing and composition, he also penned an organ-scored transcription! Boy, would I LOVE to hear that. I've seen him, and his various ensembles play live, about 13 times, every time a TREAT!
@@rjculliford Yes, THAT'S it! I forgot its name, and it does put one into a "churchy" worshipful state of mind. Tony really knows how to NAIL those things.
A huge number to cover in the UK alone.... Wells, Winchester, Salisbury, York Minster, Exeter, St. Albans, St. Pauls and Westminster Abbey to name but a few.
Frauenkirche had many splendid Synagogue/Temple emulators, before The Third Reich destroyed them all, in Munich, too. I should say, "VG", thanks to you, ALL of the Cathedrals that you've profiled, now feel like old friends!

I await part 3 since there are many more grand cathedrals in the world.
Please include Prague's beautiful castle in a part 3. The cathedral is stunning, especially when seen from the old town and the Charles bridge.
I loved the cathedral of Albi, did not know that one. Very distinct architecture.
As an organist, like that Albi cathedral is dedicated to St. Cecilia. Unusual design but beautiful nonetheless.
author of THE DEATH TAX sez: The elegant narration is a fitting accompaniment to the gorgeous structures depicted in Parts I and II. Nice job!
I hope to see the third part of this documentary! 👍
You can it’s already released.🙂
Beautiful Cathedrals ❤
The works are truly beautiful and beyond imagination. Wishing you great health.❤❤❤❤❤❤
May I suggest Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik, Iceland - stunning exterior & exterior, simplistic but very powerful.
That one is absolutly beautiful!

St Paul's cathedral would be a nice addition.

I second that! Would be a great addition.
great video! I´m still missing Hagia Sophia, St. Peter in Rome and Ulmer Münster. The last one has the tallest church steeple in the world
pisa with leaning tower is not bad as well...and the duomo of venice, mulhouse cathedral was once of of the tallest in europe

recomiendo se informen de Cordoba,Leon, Samtiago..etc etc..en España
great videos, but how did you forget to include St Peters cathedral in the Vatican?
Thank you! The reason St Peter is not included is because is not a cathedral. But it will be included in the next part of the series.
You overlooked the Salisbury Cathedral, very sad.

May I suggest a certain church in Rome?
Which church?
St Peter's Basillica of course, widely regarded as the world's most impressive church, yet somehow omitted from your top twenty (which I am nevertheless enjoying.)
@@seandoherty925 As its name suggest, St Peter's Basilica is ... a basilica, not a cathedral.

Please don't forget Nidaros Cathedral in the next part, very unique for being in northern europe and the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world

Thank you for sharing! I will consider including Malaga in the next part.
A church that maybe is not too immediatly striking from the outside (great cloister, though), but with stunning interior mosaics: Duomo di Monreale
With Notre Dame's gargoyles, the 1939 movie, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", could possibly then have some continuity errors (OOOPPPSSS!!),
por cierto, en Mexico,Cuba,Peru..etc grandes catedrales hechas por los espñañoles,,no recuerdo catedrales en USA por parte de Inglaterra,,
Albi cathedral looks like Kings landing in GOT
St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
The one in Sofia, Bulgaria?
