I’m the little boy in this video in my blue suit. I was the ring bearer in this wedding and Carlene Carter’s daughter, Tiffany, is the flower girl.
Toby, the sweet girl in red and blue, is that Carlene's sister?
That's cool, dude!!! It was a true privilege!
@@georgeelder8415 I don’t know, but the little girl is Carlene’s 6 year old daughter, Tiffany, who was the flower girl. My step-father was Carlene’s manager and I spent a lot of time with these people.
Wow ! Diggin' the detail of people - in these cases actual participants in the vid' of such a fine song. With a relative as a manager you must surely have been privy to so much.
I was 10 years old and madly in love with Carlene
This is one of the most underrated songs of all time.
Saw him with Costello at the Greek about a million years ago...lolol
I hijacked Nick in front of the Fillmore one night w/5 friends in a taxi waiting to go to dinner. I had about 12 titles (incldg the reissue of 'Jesus Of Cool' w/bonuses) & the poster. He thought he was being rude to his pals 'I'm going to dinner!' & I kept saying 'They're not going anywhere! Come on, please - it's not like we're neighbors & I see you in the store. HERE- 'True Love Travels On A Gravel Road' - import single (EP); 'They're waiting for me!' "& they know this is you being gracious to a big fan. Here's the reissue w/bonuses of 'Jesus Of Cool'. Then another one w/'All Men Are Liars'. Eventually I let him go but I was smiling, he didn't really mind & the front of SF’s/The Fillmore is a perfect background to put things against for autographs! Bless you & Thank you for your generosity, Nick Lowe for being 'cruel' to them to be 'Kind' to me!
His own early 'Peace Anthem' "What's So Funny ’bout Peace, Love & Understanding?' is right up there w/Neil Young, Dino Valenti's 'Get Together' (Get IT Together seems more apropos as an autobiographical number, no? LOL)
Eh...kinda sounds like The Monkees.
Totally agree.
I want to go back to 1979. Aww hell. Any year of the 70's would do.
Better Music on Top 40 Radio

A perfect pop song.. you can listen to this 100 times and it still sounds fresh
Agreed. Loved it back then, still love it now!

Love that this was Nick Lowe’s actual wedding they filmed at.
I wondered if that was the case. And everyone looks like they were having such a great time!
It really looks like a real wedding, did Nick or Dave ever actually confirm it was though?
@@deecarter147 he married into music family royalty if memory serves me right, and to someone with your family namesake.
One of the Carter girls, and they're still married last I heard.
@coogan8825 that probably makes more sense
@Coogan yes, once again it's obvious my memory served me wrong again after reading the comments. And I didn't know they had divorced either. Maybe I just need to shut up. Lol
If it's true that you have to be cruel to be kind, then my ex wife should be considered the kindest woman on Earth.

I was 17 when first hearing this track on the radio in August of 1979. Almost 40 years later it still sounds awesome!!
Classicrocker6119 I can relate! This was the coolest music ever!! Take care friend,
The music in 1979 was in a transition period sort of preparing itself for more changes to come in the 80's. You take care as well Victoria.
This song by Nick Lowe is clearly underrated. Great song to go with great memories.
My dad listened to this song forever ago.
I'm also 17 when I first heard this song.. And am still 17
Back when making music videos was fun and the world was a lot simpler then.
Exactly what I was thinking. Exactly.
I was 1 years old l, so I agree with you 👶
Alternative music starts here.
What I wouldn’t do to go back to those wonderful days.
Music videos that don't take themselves too seriously are the best.
Some days, 1979 seems so long ago whereas this song makes it seem like it was only yesterday.
I know what you mean...I was in a rock and roll cover band in 1979 and I loved this song from the get go!!!
One of the greatest pop songs ever written
The vocal harmony in the chorus is just exquisite.

Geez, Carlene Carter was so damn pretty!
Carlene Carter is so gorgeous in this video it's almost painful
It actually is Carlines little sister...

Such a classic. Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Paul Weller. How much power pop genius came out of the UK in the late 70s, early 80s? What an era...
All Artists that I thought "boring" at that time when I was a kid. Looking back now it's easy to see how great they were, I'd add Squeeze to the list too

up to his beautiful Hollywood Hills home more than once. Those drugs will kill you!
I suppose Carlene has moved on! Loved her country music and her beautiful self..
Not an awful lot of songs have stood the test of time like this one. It is still just as fantastic as was back in 1979 when I first heard it
So many songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s have stood the test of time !!!! I wish I could pour you a glass of wine and let you listen to my music collection (please don't take that the wrong way !) . I think these decades were the 'sweet spot' for music. From Bowie to The Rolling Stones the most incredible music was created (not forgetting Abba or ZZ top.........). If I had a time machine I'd spend the rest of my life going back to watch these musicians live whilst catching up with my parents, sister and lost friends.
@@johnt8453 haha..you seem to underestimate my knowledge. Im 59 years old..I was around back then....I grew up in NYC and saw many artists perform before they were famous at shows they did at CBGB's (I even worked there right out of high school , illegally, as a bartender lol) , Webster Hall, The Ritz and others. etc. I stand by what I said..lol
Just the opening chords before the singing even starts triggers an emotion in me that i cant explain, but it takes me back to 1979, 17 years old and in love for the first time.
Great intro, the drums.😅
Me too, a bit younger, I was 9, always a joy to listen to this, for some reason I always play another artist hit from the same era together with this : Dave Edmunds Girl Talk
Basically the Rockpile gang, and Carlene Carter in the marriage ceremony. Those were some times. And damn, those boys were good. Nick, Dave, Terry, they were underappreciated, and were better than most.
An interesting fact is that the wedding footage is actual footage of Nick's wedding ceremony! He married Carlene Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash in 1979. Their marriage lasted until 1990. Dave Edmunds is also in the band, and is the limo driver. I love this song!! I remember when it came out in 79... I was 11 then.
I was 18 when it came out and I still love it.

Favorite song of all time
What I find most endearing about Nick Lowe is that he doesn't mind being corny while sporting that earnest and boyish grin. This makes me sad to watch. What happened to the time when singers would dress up in a suit and tie, act a little silly and still be fun-loving? They weren't vulgar tough-guys with tattoos spewing out obscenities. They wanted to speak to their audience on a level that both boys and girls, men and women could relate to. So what if he is a dissipated Englishman? His sincerity and charming personality shine through without trying to impress us with macho antics. Being Light-hearted and soft should not be a threat to our manhood, but rather admired for its winsome appeal.
+imbluz I think you hit it on the head. Once a time R&R was dangerous and fun. Now, it's almost only pop music that is fun and people dance. R& R was long ago taken over by tattooed up thugs, bald headed cretins,or ugly guys with unwashed shoulder length hair IOW-- lock up material or ugly drug music. Now R&R means nothing and if you care about your health want nothing to do with it. The last breath was in the 80's with Costello,Romantics,Knack,Clash,Police,English Beat and so forth-nothing has the vitality or originality of those groups anymore.
The fall of the New Rome!
+imbluz " OkGO'! Check them out!

@@markryan7008 No, it came out in 1979.
I remember seeing this video as a teen in the late 70s/early 80s, I thought it was cute and funny then didn't think about it again. Then in the early 90s I was watching CMT and a video came on called Every Little Thing. I recognized the singer from the Cruel video and busted out laughing. I had no idea Nick Lowe had married one of June Carter Cash's daughters. And Carlene is talented, too. Love her music.
Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds...It doesn't get much better!
This song was totally randomly playing in my head when I woke up this morning. I don't remember hearing it anywhere recently. Earworm. What does it mean exactly, cruel to be kind? That's insane. If anyone is cruel to me I immediately kick them out. Catchy song.
Happy birthday 2024 Nick!!!!! Still a FABULOUS song!!!
Perfect pop song performed by real musicians. I remember when Nick Lowe was interviewed by Jim Ladd on a local AOR station and being berated by him for recording this song. Nick was a total gentleman. But, certainly Nick's legacy lives on and Jim? RIP JL you silly self appointed Mal content.
Awesome song. Still holds up today in December 2023
I saw him at the Xponential Music Fest in Philadelphia 20 years ago. After his set I was wandering around. Many of the artists would do a meet and greet after, and I saw him sitting all by himself at a table. I felt rather sorry for him and thought about going to sit with him but I couldn’t think of anything to say. And, not for nothing, but Carlene Carter was a babe.
Absolutely bloody marvellous. Nick Lowe is 65 now and Dave Edmunds is 70. We just don't make records as good as this anymore.
