I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
Well the bride looked a picture In the gown that her mama wore
When she was married herself
Nearly 27 years before
They had to change the style a little
But it looked just fine
Stayed up all night
But they got it finished just in time
Now on the arm of her daddy
She's walkin' down the aisle
I see her catch my eye
And give me a secret smile
Maybe it's too old fashioned
But we once were close friends
Oh but the way that she looks today
She never could've then
Well I can see her now In her tight blue jeans
Pumpin' all her money In the record machine
Spinnin' like a top
You should have seen her go
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
Well her proud daddy
Only wanna give his little girl the best
And so he put down a grand
On a cozy little lover's nest
You could have called her reception
An unqualified success
At a flash hotel
For a 150 guests
Well take a look at the bridegroom
Smillin' pleased as pie
Shakin' hands all around
With a glassy look in his eye
He got a real good job
And his shirt and tie is nice
But I remember a time
When she never would've looked at him twice
Well I can see her now
Drinkin' with the boys
Breakin' their hearts like they were toys
She used to do the pony
Used to do the stroll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
Well I can see her now
With her Walkman on
Jumpin' up and down
To her favorite song
I still remember when she used to
Want to make a lot of noise
Hoppin' and a boppin'
With the street corner boys
She used to want to party
Used to want to go
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to do the pony
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll
I knew the bride when she used to wanna party
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll

Used to listen to the 'Basher' album in the car with the kids on long vacation drives. When they were little, my girls used to say "Daddy, will you dance with me at my wedding to "I Knew the Bride"? Of course I said yes. So fast forward to wedding day (1 down, 1 to go) and she and I did our Father/Daughter dance to "I Knew the Bride"... 5 months later, my kids took me to a Nick Lowe/Los StraightJackets concert at a small intimate club, and when they played this song, my daughter came up with me to the front of the stage and we danced together again... with Nick looking down and laughing with us.... such fun.
Awe that's a great story!!! Cute.
Awesome!
I wonder what your son in law was thinking......
lol...... @@walterfisher5749
I saw Nick Lowe many years ago with Rockpile at The Palladium on 14th Street in Manhattan. The Palladium is long gone but the memories of a GREAT concert are with me forever.
Well , I'm 60 now, and I've been to 3 weddings, where I knew the bride,..and she did a lot more than rock and roll...
😂
😂😂😂😂
They played this at my first wedding (1990), and my friends had a BLAST razzing me!
Great.
Absolutely awesome track. Joe Satriani is in my view the greatest guitarist of all time. Love his music. Keep on rocking Joe. Bloody brilliant
Every wedding DJ needs to have this in his arsenal. Guaranteed to get the crowd rockin'. . .
Definitely 💯
I request it every time.
@@donziperk brilliant well said
@@RFED2O Even my sisters wedding lol

I Knew The Bride, Cruel to Be Kind anything sung by Nick Lowe is a classic. This man is a star simple as that he doesn't need to be hyped or gimmicked he will always command a place in the hearts of true music fans.
So well said
Half a boy Half a man.....👍🇬🇧🤓
You said it!!!!!
Yes he is great!
*Hugh Lundy* Well YOUUU just "hyped" him, hypocrite. Didn't you just do what you told us needn't be done?
Nick Lowe has written several ABSOLUTELY PERFECT pop songs; this is one of them. Incredibly underrated writer and performer.
That's Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie" with different lyrics.

@@YerPope It's similar but it has a different melody and Nick added two bridges.
@@grahampaulkendrick7845 LOL, different melody? It's the exact same melody. The vocal notes are exactly the same.
This is one of the best music videos ever made. Nick Lowe is a genius.
Most perfect dance tune at my reception
Brilliant and entertaining!
I'm 75 now and this makes me young again- listen to it every day
Freakin' A keep it going as long as you. Can
PS God Love you just as you are..but Loves you enough not to let you stay the same 😋
Rock on my Brother. I am 60 and we can still kick ass!
Music is a time machine.
So nice to hear real music.
Live forever G. Rock never forgets 💜
heard this at each and every wedding I have ever been too
My sister's wedding song ❤🎉

I found this song by chance when I was scrolling on UA-cam a while back. I'd never heard of Nick Lowe. I bought the CD right away! It sounds really good in my van! By the way, I'm 63!
Get the Quiet Please CD Greatest Hits. Deleted, but on Amazon!
I come back to see this makes my day every time
Better late than never!😀
Same here, though only 53. I had vaguely heard of him but didn’t know any of his music until I stumbled upon All Men are Liars and I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass. I’ve quite taken to him now though.
the album is great rockabilly, reminds me of the bars we used to close down back in the day. Lowe had a lot of Austin, TX in him.
Danced with my dad to this for our father daughter dance at my wedding! and everyone was jumping out of their seats. Good tune!
Had to have been a great wedding and one to remember
Wow what a wonderful memory ❤
Simply awesome Paige..
I bet they rocked the floor with this tune!
Good evening Paige. My name is Maggie Grants wife. I just came across your comment and cried because this was going to be my dad's and I wedding dance or unbelievable by RIo Diamond we hadn't decided yet. Long story short he died unexpectedly before this could happen. Would it be possible to make arrangements for me to see your video with your Dad therefore giving me a opportunity for closure. I guess just seeing it through another woman would give me some glimpse of what would have been us.
Hey girls keep on rockin' and rollin' being a bride is not the best option!!!
C'est la vie, say the young folk, it goes to show you never can tell...how many Chuck Berry influenced tunes there are in the world...#AllChucksChildren
Why isn’t Nick in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame?
Because the people running the hall are total jerks that refuse to acknowledge real talent.
On a side note, why isn't the band backing Nick (and that one harp player) on this song, not in the rock & roll HOF too?!
TRRHOF is a complete joke...worthless list
This was the 1st song they played at my wedding 30 years ago...LOL!
Brilliant I got married 31 years ago. Wish I had played this.👍
Congrats! 🍾🎈🎉
If I was the groom, I would have insisted on: ua-cam.com/video/DVx8L7a3MuE/v-deo.html

Your too cool 🙂😜
This was the 1st song played at my daughter's wedding. Immediately all the guests got up & started dancing
I was hammered at my reception and that was 35 years ago, would not change anything
Nick Lowe is the artist I come back to most just to hear his songs. They just never get old. Pure joy to hear.
This was one of the last songs I played for my dad before he died two days later from a brain tumour 😭😭😭😭😭. He used to sing along to it on the radio when we were kids. 💜💔
He went out rockin
😢😭💔
I’m so very sorry for your loss.
I was in a band with my Dad. We played this song at many wedding receptions back in the day. Dad passed away in 2014, and I miss him so very much, but I have so many wonderful memories with him on stage!
I'm sorry for the loss of you dad, who had great taste in music.
My fiance and I planned a simple wedding, at the little church built in 1882 that my great grandparents attended, the reception would be 1/2 mile up the dirt road at Freyburg Hall, the community hall and biergarten my great-grandfather built around the same time. It has a little stage where my brother's band would play.
I had one request: I wanted them to play this song, but I wanted to sing it! I really was going to wear the "gown that my Momma wore", but without any changes.
My fiance died unexpectedly in 1989, before that day we planned.
Two years later, I did get married, but at the courthouse. I did wear momma's dress, but that day wasn't joyous. worst mistake of my life.
Long ago, but I wish I could go back and change it. I only had one true love, so I shouldn't have settled for less.
may he rest in peace.
Great music video! Nick Lowe does a fantastic job on this video!!!!!🎶🎸
Love his music!
This song and video make me so fucking happy, cheer Nick
I was a mobile DJ for 15 years, played close to 1500 weddings and at about 1000 of them I pulled this one out!!! Never got tired of playing it.
Huey Lewis's band the News played on and did the backing vocals on this song. Thats a cool fact.
New York, New York isn't everything they say and no place that I'd rather be...🎷🔊
I’ve probably been to minimum 10 weddings in different decades, and I’ve never heard this song! 😅 Where have I been? Love it!
LOL, saw this on the sidebar and had to LAUGH....... I was 'singing this to myself' only few hour's ago. LOL - LOL _ LOL. Not a song I think I've sung to myself before ..... I believe that's MORE than a COINCIDENCE. lol
Saw Nick and Dave with a band called Rockpile in 1978 at My Fathers Place in Roslyn Long Island. FANTASTIC.
I saw Rockpile at Hammersmith Palais, London in 1982 (certainly early 80s).
I've never heard this song before but I have to say, this is what I call good, good, good music! I have just deafened myself with my headphones listening to this.
Welcome to great music brother.......Semper Fi...Tim.
Keep lookin', Garry. TONS of great stuff out there no one's heard in years.
Same here I'm with you
Garry have you never heard nick with Dave Edmunds the two supposed each other in whatever they do concerning music the video should have Dave as their chauffeur get all their music together and you will Burst your Eardrums
SUPPORTED. Sorry
Nick Lowe is totally underated. Great musician with style.
I wasn’t aware of a formal rating system. Do you have the stats? Very curious.
underrated?? heyyyy...
Sad that most people (aside from musicians and rock history fans) have never heard of him
Another of these bloody stupid UA-cam "underrated" comments.
@@jonathanbirch2022 Nonsense! Nick Lowe has been one of the most influential writers and performers in British popular music. You obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds can do no wrong ,good feel music
Rockpile
Dave Edmunds earlier version with the members of Rockpile (with Lowe at bass) is exceptional. That group was short-lived but just great.
Dave Edmunds aced this song. Nick’s version is good though.
@Superlungs I know.
Ahhh, Rockpile. I was lucky enough to see them live and it was an excellent gig. They recorded only one album, Seconds of Pleasure (of course I own a copy!), but the members all collaborated in each other's solo projects.
@@FrozenHero2010 I saw Rockpile at Florida Gymnasium in 1979. Go Gators!!

Edit: I got to see them in London's Hammersmith Palais early 80s.

I am 62 and still love this song
Joe Musico me too and I’m 62......👍🇬🇧🤓
I could watch this a thousand times and still get a kick out of it. Simply brill!
Great Who poster @ 2:58.
sometimes a songwriter doesnt actually have to write a song to make a million bucks : once you dream up a TITLE like this one, the song almost writes itself, and the video almost shots itself !
As good a rock video as I've ever seen. Great tune. Why is NickLowe not a lot better known?
Because he's shy..............
Oh I remember this song!
Wow, where have the years gone? 🙄
I get older every second.............
I play in a band and you don’t show up to a wedding gig without this in your back pocket.
Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds are rock stars. Good ones too!

Dave Edmunds is not in this video. The tall guitar player that kind of looks like Dave is actually Martin Belmont. He was in The Rumour and Nick Lowe's Cowboy Outfit.
I'm not sure of the date of this video.
Rockpile are the group , great band
WillyisaPain 95 no they are rock gods!
What a great 80s song!
This is a MUST PLAY staple at weddings here in Newfoundland. Its used for the Dance with the Bride. Guys get around the bride, have a quick dance and move on, Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top is usually the song picked for the Groom to dance with the women. All in good fun.
My immediate thought was that this should be a wedding standard, but nobody knows it here in the US.
Oh ya! the groom made the whole reception...funny.
Yes, I heard that a time or two at weddings (fortunately, ones at which I work). The only times I've danced at weddings were with my sister at her first wedding, and once with a very pregnant bridegroom. Both occasions to ROCK LOBSTER. On both occasions, we were the only people on the dance floor, as we knew the old folks were all waiting for more painfully slow country songs. I was very careful to avoid any impression I was straight, so I limited my dancing at weddings, and could never get any boys to dance. :)
Isn't a NL wedding without this song. Gets everyone out on the floor without a doubt!
a " very pregnant bridegroom " !? Transgender, Gender re-assignment, Cool !
magic music fantasic great film cuts
God, when youre on a road trip, you have the windows down, blasting down the highway into the setting sun, and have the volume for this song turned all the way up!
Like Dave Edmunds, volume way up😉
The Dave Edmunds version is on the time life modern rock series. Whenever I go on a long trip that’s what I listen to. 360 songs of awesome nostalgia, enough to get me to Alabama and back.
Good fun go Nick I haven't heard this in ages great good fun dong
I had the good fortune to see Nick Lowe with Rockpile at The Palladium on 14th Street in NYC many years ago. The Palladium is long gone, but the memory of a GREAT show are with me forever ❤👍🏻👏🏼🎶🎵!
True True Classic, the video is the best ever of its kind. The ending, when Nick and the Bride scarper is brilliant, a lesser artist would have had the wedding party looking on in shock. No, the party goes on and nobody notices. God bless Mr Lowe !
Makes my old bones, want to go back in time. Love it.
Amen, brother! l' m 63, got tears now listening to it.
Just a fucking awesome song and video...love Nick the Knife....cheers from Pennsylvania
Yes, these are 2 great examples of keeping rock n roll alive during a period of disco, punk, and new wave. Icons.
Has a lot of country taste ...
This isn't rock and roll though; this is western or country music.
@@ToyotaGuy1971 Rock'n'roll is a mixture of c&w and r'n'b. So it's a rock song.
@@grahampaulkendrick7845 It's more like a cross between rockabilly and western, but it's very western. It's more western that rock and roll of any era.
@@ToyotaGuy1971 - Nashville not that far west. Rockabilly for sure but that is the roots of rock and roll.
Never heard of him until now. What have I been missing?!!
I am 60 and love this song.I have been there done that.
great stuff .Love it
Don;t like to admit, first time I have heard this but instant, fantastic.
I'm 63 and yesterday was the first time I had ever heard this song! Now I can't stop listening to it!
Yup, you've got some catching up to do, lol.
Love this!!!
The rockpile rocked
I personally prefer the version with Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams end 70-ies as Rockpile. It was always part of the live shows and much, much much more Rock and Roll.
Best albums of Nick Lowe ? Jesus of cool, Labour of lust and Pinker and prouder than previous
I’m with you.
As a dj in the 80's , I played this at every wedding. The brides loved it. Great party starter!!!!
@LisaK71000 2 each dear!
Love this!!🥰
LOVE THIS one
Essential song for any party compilation.
always makes me smile
Wasn't much "secret" about THAT smile, huh? 🤩 I love how so many videos from the 80's were so literal, acting out the lyrics (her dad buying them a lover's nest, etc.). These little quick vignettes of actors doing exactly what the lyrics are singing. You saw that a lot in the early days of MTV, before directors/bands knew what to do. Not everyone had Duran Duran budgets to fly to Sri Lanka with a film crew and play around with elephants and walk on beaches and in temples, so it was kept very "by the numbers". I love this song. I bought the 45 after seeing the video.
Love it!
Just fantastic!!!!!
Classic rock, love it
Nick Lowe - a case of a guy who writes great catchy fun songs but doesn't take himself too seriously.
Love it
Not surprised this is a popular song at weddings considering the content. Contrary to men who think they are the only ones forced to give up fun lifestyles to "settle down" this sounds like a nice sympathetic tune for the brides.
Nah, men are just honest about it.
I'm a little surprised. As a man, to me it's a sad commentary on how many women choose the safe, boring guy to marry. The line that kills me is "I remember a time when she never would have looked at him twice." That's about "settling," not about settling down.
@@adingoatemybaby498 yeah well he probably was not a rock n roll type guy so she wasn't interested till she wanted to settle down. If she's fun and he's dull she'll be miserable though.

Been ages since I've heard this song. Takes me back to riding bean bar in the early 80's
One of my old time favorites...
Such a fantastic arrangement. I never tire of it.
How on earth did this never even touch the charts?
Maybe because Dave Edmunds had already smashed it. 😃
Got the best music 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I remember this video and song from the 80 s
This album (The Rose of England) was produced by Huey Lewis, and he brought in his band "The News" for this cut. That is most definitely Huey's harmonica you're hearing.
Bringin' the low down eh? Like it.
Yep, Mario Cipollina on bass is unmistakable.
Yeah, for sure! You can hear the influence (that tempo!) even beyond the harp!
Even the keyboards in this are reminiscent of "Heart of Rock and Roll". I would have had to look that up, if I didn't know better, and I know thanks to you.
Huey Lewis for sure
Doesn't get much better than this.
