    Thanks for the review of this little gem. I am not new to photography or Nikon...own 10 now beginning with my Nikon FE from 1976. Which is why I just had to buy this! Going back to dials intrigued me.
    I know this retro baby has it's issues but I am having a blast with it & I am thrilled with the photos I'm getting. Would I recommend it as a first camera for someone just getting started? No...there are other Nikons far better for that purpose. But this one is just FUN!!!! With the expected Nikon quality of results.

    I really appreciate your video and style. I don't need blinding RGB lighting in some dingy basement, or silly music montages .. just give me clear precise information about a product. seriously I appreciate such videos so much, the opinions you expressed about this product are taken more seriously by the viewer when delivered by an adult in a professional informative manner. subbing!

    In regard to the tricky to hold complaint, they now make a grip you can buy that screws onto the camera. You can get a wooden one or one that blends in with a matching color scheme and material.

      You are correct and I've actually been meaning to buy one for some time, however I've been using this camera a lot for video work so it's been on a tripod most of the time where a grip isn't needed. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Paul, Your video has further convinced me to upgrade to a Zfc. I'm a hobbyist using D3200. I was wondering, would I be still able to use my old Nikkor DX lenses viz. AF-S 35mm prime, AF-S 55-200mm and Tamron AF 70-300mm lenses with the Zfc using the mount?

I am looking into purchasing a camera, I do quite a bit of product photography and would like to do it professionally - would the Zfc work for me? Or would it be better for me to invest in a full frame camera? Many thanks!

    Hi Paul, more useful info and as ever a balanced review. The Zfc is clearly a great piece of kit, but having hands like one of Kenny Everett's characters and that I just do stills, I think the Z50 might be more for me .. but only when the piggy bank is in better shape. As ever, thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Paul! I'm in the process of trying to figure out which kind of camera to update to, the ZFC is on my list. The battery door/tripod issue could be a problem. Do you know if there is a battery grip for the ZFC or is Nikon coming out with one? I did see the extra grip. Your video was quit help full. Thank you!

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  3 роки тому

      Hi Ann. The battery door may not be an issue if your tripod uses a smaller QR plate - the manfrotto one that I use is wide and just overlaps the door by a couple of millimetres.
      I do not expect Nikon to release a battery grip for this camera. Thanks for watching, appreciate the support and feedback.
      Paul.

    I will add (to my previous comment) it would have been nice if Nikon could have made it so you could have selected extended shutter speeds perhaps in increments of 5 or 10 seconds after you hit 60 seconds, versus the 1/3 stop marks, which at longer shutter speeds, say beyond 60 seconds, could mean too much exposure (light) so it would have been nice if you could fine-tune this a bit more at least down to 10 second, and preferrably 5 second, intervals. I think this is something they could address via a firmware update. Maybe have it so you can choose whether you want extended shutter speeds in 1/3-stop, 1/2 stop, full stop, or 10 second increments.
    The quick release plates are part of the reason I try to use ball-heads and plates that have a notch in them so you can slide the plate over away from the battery door. Certainly this means that the plate may not be centered on the camera exactly in the center, but if you're using a lighter lens, then this isn't generally a problem (using a heavier lens might mean the camera is off-balance or can risk tilting to one side due to weight, but that is one option to overcome blocking of the battery/card door.)

    I've never owned or used a Nikon. I thought the zfc might be the one, but it didn't really appeal to me. I bought a FE instead; a camera that wasn't trying to masquerade as something it wasn't. I promised it that every quarter I'll buy film ...

    I really think Nikon has made a decent retro camera here. It's got a bit more plastic than I would have liked (for the price, as the Fuji XT30, probably it's closest rivals, feel a bit more substantial and sturdily built). But this one does have some features that the Fuji XT30 lacks, like a dedicated ISO dial, articulating screen, and a few other things. But on the whole, I would say this camera makes a lot of sense especially for existing Nikon Z shooters who might want to use their FF lenses on this camera too (like a 70-200, to get a 105-300mm equivalent for example, or a 50 1.8 for a near-equivalent 75mm portrait lens). In terms of dials, I think the omission of the ISO dial is sort of a mistake, since film cameras all had film speed/ASA dials, but Fuji omitted this on the XT30 (although the higher-level XT3 does have a dedicated ISO dial). This is where I'd say if you're going to do a retro camera, try to include as much as you can. On the flipside, Nikon does not use aperture rings (although on some premium lenses with the spare ring, you can program that ring to be an aperture ring, but it's not the same as the Fuji's which are "clicky"). I guess in the end it's a bunch of trade-offs. If you want higher resolution and the aperture ring and a focus stick, go with the Fuji. If you want the ISO dial and a more modernized sensor, and a flip out screen, get the Zfc (even the higher-end XT3 doesn't have a flip out screen -- I believe it only tilts in portrait mode). The big advantage I see with the articulating screen is you can fold it around so it doesn't display anything (so if you're doing street and trying to be a bit discrete, you can flip the LCD around so it's not showing, and you can review images -- or compose images -- in the EVF). You can turn off the LCD on the Fuji but you always run the risk of accidentally having it turn back on (so I'd rather have the flipping screen instead for this reason, plus it can help protect the LCD from damage during transport of when you're carrying it around on a strap).
