In this episode John upgrades his single zone hose bib water timer to a 4 zone model that will better meet his needs and ensure his raised bed vegetable garden is watered. You will discover why John uses inline boogie blue water filters to removes the chlorine before watering his garden, you will also discover how simple installing a drip irrigation system can be. After watching this episode, you will have the confidence to Do It Yourself and set up your own drip irrigation system with the Melnor 4 zone 3280 water timer to water your edible garden.

    John, I'm a college student living in a downtown apartment and at this stage in my life have NO business installing an irrigation system... nevertheless I watch and love every last video of yours. You're a wealth of knowledge and have inspired me to finally start growing my greens on my small shady balcony and live a healthier lifestyle. We all thank you for what you do! Cheers!

    Water is the key for life. No matter how good your compost, or how much rock dust is used, Water must be consistent, and that is the trick for success. I myself(like many others), are multi-tasking and absent minded, so a timer and "system" is very important. I Love these "obvious" video topics. I appreciate each and every video that is uploaded. Knowledge and inspiration will lead to x-treme vegetation !!! LOL, Thank you John, and everyone else that maintains these excellent youtube channels

      ***** i didn't mean to be rude, sorry. You are old school and i apreciate that, but some help from technology is very good. The best part of gardening i enjoy the most, is colecting the fruits or vegetables when they are ready to be colected, watering is the most boring part for me. You are a good guy, i've seen your channel and almost all your vids, i apreciate your work. Keep up the good work, is obvious you love what you do. :-D
      Have a good day.

      I didn't mind watering with a hose as needed while I was living in the northeast US... but after moving to the desert southwest, a good drip irrigation system seemed essential to avoid wasting water and maintaining proper soil moisture throughout parched days that peak well over 110°F (43°C). John gardens in Las Vegas Nevada.

    John last year you inspired me to try irrigation! I ended up using the soaker hose which worked very well for my main beds. It did fall apart when I tried my perimeter gardens. The elevation changes and I had backwater problems. I might try drip irrigation for the perimeter. Thank you for sharing John!

    Thanks John, for having the boogie brew hook up on deals!!! I ordered a Boogie Blue water filter and it just arrived today! I can't wait to be able to use it.... so DONE bailing water from the dog kiddy pool to water my plants (used to let the chlorine evaporate).

      Hook up? I just started following John about a week ago.... and my husband and I are thinking about getting some boogie products for spring 2014. If we could get a deal, that would be awesome, and might just tip the scale on whether we go for it or not.... :) Any more info would be much appreciated!

    question: I've seen a number of setup diagrams that recommend putting the filter (or in my case, a filter/pressure reduction widget by DIG) AFTER the timer manifold. 2 years later, how has it worked for you with simply the single filter before the timer?

    Nice! Like the newer setup!!! Let us know how the new timer works out for you. System is set for four different connections. Did it come with caps for the unused ports, if say you only run 2 or 3 irrigation hoses? Caps would provide extra protection from possible system leaks which would lead to overall reduced pressure. Caps would also keep bugs/dirt out of the unused ports.

    Ahhh, very cool. so that's how its done. I could have really used this in the past 6 yrs. at this house I've been mostly hand watering most things! lol (not that manual watering is horrible, but in the summer heat it can be real difficult keeping up with all the fast evaporation watering so frequently).
    But, between the faucet & the garden area there is a 15' long & about 35' wide cement patio area (it's really big area). The hose would've melted sitting over that hot cement in the blazing summers, plus I'd trip on it all the time. lol I don't think I would've been able to get that under that much cement! lol Pretty cool though.

    I had that water same timer. It lasted one season. I took it all apart brought inside for the winter, set it up next spring and it leaks from every joint. $100 piece of junk. Next year bought a different brand, same exact thing. Wish there was a company that built one that would last more than one year.

    If you install a timer does that increase your water bill since the water line is always open?

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 10 років тому +1

      You don't grasp the concept of the timer, do you? The water is only flowing when the timer tells it to flow.

    • @MJonesMotivation
      @MJonesMotivation 10 років тому

      Well thanks for your smart comment. I asked a simple question. Even with a timer the water is still on 24/7 at the faucet.

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 10 років тому +1

      So you still do not grasp the concept of the timer, even after my smart comment The timer is in position after the faucet. The timer stops the water from flowing until the timer tells the water to flow. If the timer is not set to open, the water is not flowing. Is that a simple enough answer to your simple question?

      jmyran1 I live in the desert southwest, where water conservation is a constant issue. The water district here encourages people to use drip irrigation systems with a timer, just like John, to save water and cut back on your water bill. From my experience, it works. The water usage is actually less, not more, with the drip irrigation system and the timer.

    try the melnor aquatimer and the melnor aqua rain delay the water timer has 4 way spliter with individual timer settings on each one and the rain delay is a sensor that stops the timer when it detects rain and im sure the filters would work too

    #3 is wasting water due to over watering. In South Florida we have long periods of relatively frequent rain with occasional dry periods. If I watered automatically without regard to when and how much it rained recently I would waste precious water. I prefer to make sure my soil will hold moisture and mulch to reduce evaporation to avoid the need for additional watering except for extended dry periods.

      it sounded like he didn't have enough pressure/flow. 1 filter per line may be his way to squeeze just a bit more water out of his line.
      edit. he mentioned this in the video. what's the confusion?

    hey john i would really like to get your opinion on the "all mighty marijuana plant"....recreational use aside, i heard it is one of the healthiest plants on the planet, and i hear alot of people juice the plant, with no sycoactive effects......its truley a shame that this bueutifull plant is illigal to grow, but it would be a great green to grow, i watched your video were the cops came to your house.....if the plant was completely legal to grow, and it wasnt demonized, would you have a crop in your garden?to juice?.and i understand the taboo assiociated with the plant......but i would love to get your opinion on the "plant" itself.....thanks jon........keep up the great work......

    I've learned many of my gardening techniques on UA-cam. However, since I'm cheap and lazy, I do as much as I can to validate any new and interesting information before I adopt particular recommendations. My approach is to search *.org, *.edu or other credible sites for validation. While this can be time-consuming, it can be useful in discovering many practices that might look good in theory, but end up not being worth one's effort.
    One recommendation shown in this video is to filter garden water so that such things as fluorides and/or chlorine are not delivered to one's veggies. This one intrigued me enough to do some research. I can't seem to find anything other than "opinion" that validates this practice. I understand the theory, but I can't seem to find anything that convinces me it would be worth my effort. Do you have anywhere I could go for more information on this topic - that is, other than "opinions"? Thanks.
