- Time has called on 2023, but one more treat is being served in the name of another year gone and games we may have enjoyed. M top 8 best Technology/Graphics/Art list of 2023 is ready for your enjoyment. As always, a tight affair to put things into some level of order and the list will always be subjective. That said, this covers my Top 8 for the year now done and also includes an extra Retro Bonus. Looking back to my childhood and the best games I enjoyed in 1983 between Arcade and home with my ongoing 40 years of Pixels, is there anything on or missing from this list that you agree or disagree with? Be it 2023 or 1983, leave you comment below and let me know.

"The older I get, the faster it comes." Very true and i hate it. At 41, a year now feels like 6 months. Sad how the closer u get to leaving Earth, the faster time feels like its going. I get why my Grandma always wanted things to slow down
It depends on how you live life. A repetitive life at work makes time fly.
I'm 40 years old and live in the center of beautiful Heidelberg Germany. I inhabit a flat with 2 students, to save money. I can walk to work (ICU nurse), but I have an old used bike for less then 200 bucks. I don't need to travel. Heidelberg is paradise. No car, no kids. I only work part time so I have enough money for my hobbies: Bouldering, Running, Gaming on Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch (when our house burns down, I can't lose those games, I own them in the cloud). Life is beautiful nowadays, why would I waste it at work. I only buy cloths when I really need them, mostly cheap.
You can eat healthy for 5 bucks a day (coffee included). I consider whole grain pasta to be healthy, but you should have them split up in to maximum 2 meals a day, and with a good amount of healthy plant seed oils (I prefer olive). Other than that I eat nuts and vegetables. Only drink water, coffee, and tea without milk or sugar. If you're vegan have your vit.B12 and a good source of omega-3 fatty acids (like algae oil), maybe vit.D if you're a nightshift worker or not out in the sun much, and you're good. I'm 40 years old, athletic, everyone thinks I'm much younger. Take good care of your bodies folks and enjoy life 💟🌌☮️

Agreed, I do a great deal more to find and make space in my life. I have finally started taking a day a week off from actual work now, started it about 2 years ago but kept breaking my own rules on too many occasions. So from this year I will only work 6 days a week and use the day to do new things with my wife, family, self whatever and hopefully learn new things as that is what I always love.

@@NXGamer Probably Alan Wake as well. I am curious as to how it will stack up to the next from Naugthy Dog. I’m also pleased to see Spider-Man 2 getting recognized on this list, as I think the technical achievement has been a bit overlooked.
@@NXGamer Hey I wanted to correct your statement at 13:38 where you talked about ray traced shadows in final fantasy. It seems that they're using a custom shadow mapping technique instead.

That Alan Wake Music segment, and whole game to be honest, deserves to be played with a Audeze Maxwell headphones.

I did whack on my headphones when it came up, but they are just the Pulse ones. My surround system was off as the family was in bed. Such a great section, I loved it and I played it without the internet being aware of it at that point, so was a genuine and pleasant surprise.

I'm usually a bit behind the curve of buying new releases due to the suboptimal state a lot of games release in these days but Resident Evil 4 Remake was well worth the price imo with its polish and gameplay mechanics

@@loudoesreviewsAbsolutely. It's unbelievable how good it plays, looks and feels. I went in blind on VR version and had the absolute best VR experience ever. Currently on second playthrough which says alot for someone like me that one and dones.
I really hope Sony keeps producing the VR versions of RE.
Superb as always. Good list. Some crap in 2023, gollum, walking dead destinies, Kong skull island but some belters like Resi 4, Spiderman 2, Hogwarts, Jedi survivor, immortals of aveum and of course Alan Wake 2.
Yep, we had some bad releases for sure and a very high level of buggy games in my reviews also, the patches during review periods were, at times, bonkers.
It's unacceptable to me that they couldn't put a solid reflection INDOORS in AW2.
The PC vs Console comparison is a joke. You can't render a decent reflection in an enclosed space? BS. That needs fixing.
Yeah and the image quality on console SUCKS ..I'm on ps5 and its so distracting all the ugly artifacts and aliasing. So disappointing!

Insomniac are wizards Spiderman 2 is the most graphically impressive game I played this year by far!
I’d probably pick Jetpack on the speccy. I loved ultimate back then and I think I played every game they did.
Thanks for making this, i love the mix of the new games and old, i too upgraded from a VIC 20 to the amazing C64, and have great memories of Choplifter too! I recently picked up the Atari 2600+ and have been having a blast with that, did you try it out? it seems to be a well made piece of kit. Having just recently finished Jedi Survivor, i feel its actually quite underrated, its a really solid game.
Cheers Brett, great to hear and I loved my Vic and C64 immensely. I have not tried the 2600+, the idea seems sound and I may yet see if I can pick one up but I as I have the original and later models, it may not have much use for me. That said, I am a sucker for Retro tech.
Considering the platform, TOTK should definitely be on the list, masterful coding, but that's just my opinion.
It was on my Honour's list, I just showed it rather than talked about it, a VERY impressive and tailored game to the hardware with excellent use of the Switch. The Physics and dynamic nature in particular is better than most games of the past few years, sad really.
Always love your list, Michael. But not with you on AW2. I salute its majesty on the highest end of PC hardware but it only looks moderately impressive (and often quite rough) on the current gens. But, anyway, Happy New Year mate and catch you on the next one. 👍🏻
They need to fix the damn image quality on console!
Great stuff, thanks. And yes, the console version was not as polished or as stable as it could have been, the performance mode also hits too hard for me. The demands on PC are also really high, even on my RTX3080 with 5800X3D I am often sub 60fps at max RT 1440 DLLS Performance. But it is stunning at times and the character models are exceptional and close to movie quality on occassion.
Great list. The only 2023 games I have played are Stasis: Bone Totem and Miasma Chronicles which imo are both good. I can't speak to 1983 games as I was to young then
Never too late to play some old Classics, I sometimes look at games I missed at the time and enjoy them. We can not play all games as they come out and even in the 70s and 80s the amount was more than you could get through. Thanks for watching and commenting, I will have to check out Miasma Chronicles as that passed me by.

@@NXGamer sometimes I'll get out of sequence if something smaller comes out that I really want to check out, but mostly it's back and forth. Honestly that dual mode (4k @240hz / 1080p @480hz) OLED screens coming out are tempting for the way I play my games and we know many old games look better in 1080p or less.
The last 3 years have been about vr for me, flatscreen gaming is dead. Resi 4 VR just blew everything away what a game.
Love NX' "best of" videos. Makes my appreciation for certain games much richer. Btw it's nice to see FF16 and Hogwarts get their due as they were snubbed by other channels best graphics lists
Sad they were, they both did a great deal right and for the visuals, art and technology they excelled at times.
What about Dead Space Remake, it looked and sounded fantastic.
Again, would have been an honours list one, was great just not a HUGE leap forward.
Jedi Survivor is the best game of 2023. The gameplay is way too fun.
I enjoyed it greatly and aside the bugs, it was a stunner,.

Is Avatar worth a buy, you reckon, guys? Michael? I'm not talking just about visuals.. Is the gameplay at least a bit interesting? I'm eyeballing the game for a long time. It could look nice on my 4090, but I don't want to buy a game just for visuals alone. Thanks :)

For me, no. Too much like Far Cry and Primal specifically, it has the same fetch quest, unlock towers, battle this, progress skills grind. A beautiful game and times but not one I finished so that is always a sign. That said if you love Far Cry games and that mould, I am sure it will offers weeks of entertainment.

My personal highlights for visuals this year go to Jedi Survivor, Hi-Fi Rush, Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk post 2.0, and a mod of Minecraft RTX that came out last year, Better RTX.

83 or 23?
FF16 was a dud for me in terms of its gameplay mechanics, variety, and challenge. Those things can't be patched. What should have been patched by now is the god-awful framerate in the performance mode. Sure, it mostly hits its target in combat, but in general world traversal, of which there is a lot, it still bounces between the mid 40s and 50s, constantly dropping out of the VRR window. A stuttering mess overall.
I think Square is just a shell of their former selves today. The last few FF's have been ...not good..mostly the game design but also padding, lack of depth, simplistic level design, and cringe dialog. It's strange to see people praise FF7 remake so highly.
@mgxzazfbyjuchrisclarkvpz236 yeah the padding in 7R was ridiculous. Go find 5 cats...okay. Now round up the children...okay. Now go for dinner at Jessie's mothers house...okay....
Im still looking forward to Rebirth. That does look as though there's a few decent side mini-games and activities such as Chocobo racing.
Sorry to be pedantic, but you do know that CDP isnt the full name of the game studio? Its CDPR. Red isnt just the engine name. CDP are the company that owns GOG, their game development studio is CDPR. Im fussy about this as two of my friends work there lmao

Good list. FF16(my 1st pick) and Hogwarts(my 2nd pick) get some of their well deserved love finally!!! I would've honestly found a place for tiny Forspoken mention too as a last goodbye to amazing luminous engine (some stuff in it is kinda great looking after patches).
But I cannot agree on Avatar and especially Alan Wake 2. Avatar is very simplistic looking to me. Simple modes and geometry. bloomy lighting. Idk.. I know it's good looking but I personally don't see it. For sure not better than Horizon. And water reflections are laughable. Launch even half life 2 and it got better looking water reflections... yes, even on dynamic objects. I just replayed it and it's interesting.
And Alan Wake 2 does look good but on PC. On ps5, it looks like crap. No rt, ssr is extremely grainy, low res, low performance, fsr2 breakup extreme. Some of the worst image quality this gen so far.
edit: I actually think fsr1 is better choice for hogwarts than fsr2. No grainy breakup. I hat fsr2
I think Forspoken (and Luminous) got a raw deal, the internet decided it was bad before it was even released. It had issues and wasn't the best game of the year (or even in the top 10), but it's far from the worst. I finished it on PS5 and enjoyed it.
@@jedimindtrickonyou3692 yeah the game never stood a chance with all the memes from first 10 minutes of the game. I maybe liked it more than average (ok I loved it) but it's really a decent game. Good open world, fantastic combat and traversal, amazing music by the same dude who made music for gow ragnarok and main character actually got personality and people are mad about that.
They are mad that homelees nyc teenager got an attitude. Like no shit.
I do agree it launched in bad state. Was patched 2-3 months later and now runs nice 40fps
@@HiCZoK Yeah, they stood by it and improved it, even though they knew the studio was getting closed. They deserve recognition for that. Plenty of developers don't fix their own games, despite not getting axed. They are a really talented group of tech-first devs. I hope they get put somewhere useful in Square's other studios.
It sucks to see Square throwing their devs under the bus over sales expectations that were probably unfair to begin with. They did it with Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Montréal over Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy and sold them to embracer group. God knows what Embracer will do with them with the way the killed Free Radical Design (Time Splitters) and Volition (Red Faction/Saints Row).
@@jedimindtrickonyou3692 It's just bad luck. They made fine 7-8/10 game and got dropped because it was memed on. huge shame about those other studios too.
And luminous engine had potential. Sheme they will probably never use it again
Forza Motorsport was my biggest disappointment of '23. They had 2 more years AND the benefit of being next gen only and it looks worse than the Cross gen GT7. Not only that but has lots of visual noise, artifacts, and the "ray tracing on track" turned out to be a dud.
Yeah, it was and is, often, worse than previous releases and the RT is best off OR only in the cinematics, pre-race bits.
Alan Wake 2 is so disappointing on PS5. It has the WORST artifacting and aliasing I've played on a game this gen. Very disappointing that they havn't been able to improve this in updates the way Guerilla was able to with FW.
Yep, as I note in the video the console versions suffer too much on IQ, FX and overall quality levels as do medium range PC.
spiderman 2 is graphically and technically the most impressive game this year but it is criminally underated because of console warring
The game is extremely mid. Good graphics and gameplay though.
I love the game, but playing alan wake 2 right now and it looks almost a generational leap better
its mid because its repetitive not so different from spider man ps4 and dejavu but technically and graphically it is the most advanced this year, from streaming technologies and densiity, animations and character detail, no games in 3 years have beaten insomniac in character detail, plus beauty of the city and how fluid its all packed@@brightblackgrouse6236
It looks great but it's not the best looking and definitely not the most technically impressive game we've had this year.
tell me what game is technically impressive or better looking this year? cyberpunk dlc is a simply a ps4 game with raytracing make up on top, alan wake 2 looks artistically better than all games this year but its technically a simple game, avatar only has simple tricks on its sleeves to fool people that its good, the semi dense forestry with low geometric detail and half assed animation detail makes it another mid dejavu ubisoft game.@@spathic1
Shame you felt you had to ‘join the crowd’ by ignoring Starfield, a game that can often look excellent… is unfortunate.
I never do that, I am as far from the maddening crowd as you can get. I said my thoughts on Starfield in my review, so this should not be a surprise.
spiderman 2 is not running at 4K textures are not always great... can't be no1 by any means. Avatar and Cyberpunk do look better , when Spiderman 2 runs at native 4K 120, then can be close the top
No game runs at 4k/120 on Console, Avatar and Cyberpunk included.
He's video is not console-only, when Spiderman 2 is on steam also then can be included as reference, not before.
Cyberpunk hes talking it's PC , not console, if you don't use RTX overdrive then its just a ps4 game running at 60 fps on ps5... what a joke

Didn't play any of these new games this/last year, was not happy with many of day one releases :/ But now that we are in '24 I guess it's time to check some of them out :D
