Many thanks for a great list, Sir. And for another year of brilliant videos. By far the best games tech channel. You always look for the positives first, the negatives second. I come for your attitude as well as your expertise. While the X1X was certainly my hardware of the year, it was Sony’s year for games and the remarkable tech that drives them. Your list is my list to the letter. But it’s God of War at the top for me. Not only my GOTY but the tech, art design and performance were nothing short of astounding. It raises the bar for action adventures for the whole industry and - best of all - all platforms will benefit from reaching for that bar. Actual game changer. Happy Christmas.
Sterling job as ever NX (Michael)! I agree with most of your list, although I would shift some of the titles around in my own. The only one that I'd disagree with is Battlefield V. It does look nice and it's very impressive in that it runs at 60fps while looking as good as it does, but what lets it down for me is all of the visual glitches that I encountered. I'm playing God of War and 😱 I've never seen graphics look like this on anything before and it's so tightly focused and technically brilliant it's a joy to see in this age of broken bug infested service based gaming! A quality title u buy and that's that! 😁👌🏻 no entry fee!😔😡, thank god for these games like it and Spidey etc cus I'd of quit playing if they didn't exist and all we had was multiplayer grind fests full of micro transactions. God of War is no 1 this generation not just year in my eyes, oh a special mention...Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom 😁 charm personified it's gorgeous
Kingdom Come Deliverance on PC is number 1 for me, and I have played some graphically demanding games in 4K on my PC. It's the MOST realistic looking game I've played alongside Battlefront 2.
I don't have a PS4, only a PC but when I watched my cousin play God of War on his console, I realized it looked better than any game I currently play on PC (granted the newest game I play is like 6 years old)
The progress and evolution of No Man's Sky has been impressive but I would have replaced that entry, which is a 2016 game, with the magnificent Shadow of the Colossus remake. Bluepoint's own engine was terrific to kickstart the year, and everything in that game, even if attempting to stick to certain elements of the 2005 original, performed incredibly.
Nice into btw, but I really had wished this vid was longer with more honorary mentions. Personally Spyro and Horizon 4 would be there and I'd have RDR2 swapped with GOW
Graphically, Santa Monica hit the ball out of the park and Insomniac made a home run. Technically, Rockstar has always been wizards and they've put up an amazing reason why they're one of the best studios technically abled... Until Naughty Dog release their next title

Yup, RDR2 is definitely the best looking game. It's insane that an open world game on such a massive scale can look downright photo realistic 90% of the time on my standard PS4.
in some areas RDR 2 is the best but in-terms of characters models GOW,Spider man and Detroit Become human are better and GOW semi linear designs allows for particles effects that RDR 2 could only dream of touching and ps5 might be the machine that would give us GOW as a full open world game with details of GOW 2018 or more

SpiderMan looks impressive but it's very styalized and can look kinda cartoonish. Haven't played Detroit so I can't speak for that game but I still think overall RDR2 is better looking. I seem to be in the minority of people to think RDR2 looks "fine" or "decent". I played the game on ps4 pro but never was impressed by the graphics, in fact I was even slightly disappointed. Everyone praised the graphics and said it's the best looking game of 2018, but I wonder if those people played God of War or Detroit. Textures in RDR2 are nothing special and the AA solution is pretty aggressive which makes the game look quite blurry even on the pro with higher resolutions. RDR2 has definitely outstanding lighting and the best snow(physics) of all games. Only compared to some other games does is lack in quality in my opinion.

Mediocre textures and models, insanely blurry image quality, good but far from industry leading lighting, and an HDR implementation so bad that the game looks better with it off. The technical achievements of open world games in recent years is remarkable. Rockstar, Guerrilla, insomniac and Ubisoft have created some amazing looking yet vast games, for this reason I think Bethesda Studios is going to be left behind in the industry soon.
I know it’s a subjective list and all, but for a channel about graphics tech it’s weird that number 1 and a “very close” number 2 were both awarded to games with horrifically broken HDR. Shouldn’t the more forward-looking, ground-breaking devs get a bit more love, rather than giving a pat on the back to those who are doing yesterday’s thing (albeit exceptionally well).
The reason is I requested a review code but never got one. It simply missed the time I had to cover titles. I had to buy over half of the titles on the list here, I had forgotten it was on Gamepass and I have downloaded today. I will try to cover the title over the Christmas break to slot in as needed for an update as it has been a high request from comments, so thanks for all in commenting. This is exactly why I asked as I try Cover as much as possible but as an Independant, side project I cannot catch them all 😊👍
RDR2 was the best GOTY imo and I'm PC gamer that will only undust my PS4 pro to play Sony exclusives and Rockstar games.I'm hoping PC gets RDR1/2 because playing RDR 2 60fps and above would be wonderful !!!

I enjoyed FH3 and with all the other games on the year list I simply did not get around to it yet, as I stated in the video I will have missed some games. Honestly could not disagree more with the number 1. Rdr2 is one of the blurriest games I've ever played, and the only thing that's impressive is the atmosphere and weather effects. It's so blurry it makes the order look like an native 8k game. The textures and models are surpassed by a huge list of games, especially the character models which look like early gen games at times. It has good lighting but even that is surpassed by most of this list let alone past games like uncharted 4, GT sport, and the order Not to mention, the fake hdr thing is unforgivable. Not sure how you can call a game with such a severely half assed implementation of something as cutting edge and important as HDR as the most impressive technical showcase in a year with so many games that look so much better and have far less weaknesses
the Fake HDR FALSE ADVERTISING of Red Dead 2 is one of the biggest gaming disappointments I've personally ever felt. Then, the fact that channels and gamers have let Rockstar off the hook on this is so further disheartening. They promised this technology on the damn BOX and then faked it to try to check off the box of having the latest technology in their hugely anticipated game. How NX could completely gloss over this and give Rockstar a pass is beyond me. He knows how much real HDR would improve the look of the game more than most people. He should also know that the version of the game he's reviewing (with Hdr turned ON), has raised black levels and he's still rating ot number one? The fake HDR causes the blacks to be grey which in turn washes out the picture. Black level is fundamental to contrast and how good an image is. This is a channel devoted to visuals .... Nx, we need people like you to actually call out companies that behave badly, not give them a seal of approval.
The reason it looks the way it does is because your system and console in playing on a high end 4K oled via one x and it is the best looking game around no blur what's so ever I have video proof too.
There is more happening in RDR. The character models(while still very impressive)aren't as detailed as some of the other games because it's a massive world with tons of things happening at once. The compute power required for all that is simply just vastly more impressive than any other game on the list. I'd honestly have Far Cry 5 and AC higher on the list for those same reasons.

Great video for the most part BUT you miss three major elements: optimization, performance an AI. It is easier to do a game that looks good but with poor performance, optimization and a PS2 AI. Then there are nothing to do Far Cry 5, Assassins Creed Odisey and Battlefield 5 (at least on consoles and excluding the RTX).
red dead had some of the worst aiming and shooting mechanics in gaming history and you put that number 1? lol the fix is in. that game is nothing compared to god of war just kratos beard is more complex graphically than anything in RDR2 but i guess you liked that game more oh well god of war won game of the year the world understood how god of war spat on red dead thoroughly

Far cry 5 has a lot more going on than rdr2. The modern world esthetic in far cry 5 is far more complex and challenging to render than the world of Rdr2. HDR in rdr2 is a broken mess. Ps4 pro version of Rddr2 had a broken checkerboard rendering where the screen would go blurry time and time again. I guess they have fixed the issue. Rdr2 getting 1st place is a big joke. Rdr2 shooting mechanics are broken. It is laggy just like grand theft auto 5. Rockstar have simply copied and pasted those mechanics without even bothering to change it. Rdr2 is an over rated pile of shit.
A course no wonder why many are giving GOW GOTY and which game have twice as long input delays, and have repetitive ,more linear then linear games mission structure i wonder why Meta-critic user score in lower of RDR 2 i wonder why but horse balls shrinking in winter and that is all that matters

Its lightning and shaders are nowhere near Spider-Man level. It relies purely on high resolution textures and superb art design. Alfheim looks really bad.

God of War is overall more visually impactful than RDR2, the character models in RDDR2 is very subpar.

Lol Forza horizon 4 doesn't even look that great. Even on PC maxed out at 4k it doesn't look better than drive club lol
Seriously God of War may be even the most entertaining and playable game in this list, but it shall never be so high when talking about tech and graphics. Its lightning and shaders are nowhere near Spider-Man level. It relies purely on high resolution textures and superb art design. Alfheim looks really bad.
