- In this video I show the step by step process on how to collect, stratify, germinate and grow a magnolia tree from seed. Magnolias are beautiful trees and growing them from seed really isn't very hard. I wanted to share my experiences to help anyone else looking to grow one for themselves.
Enjoy and Godbless!
Just collected some seeds from a 199 year old magnolia tree in istanbul, so excited for spring already. thank you!!
How interesting. I’d love to know if it worked out.
Jealous.... did it work what color is flowers?
Update please?!
@@73000 It unfortunately didn't work out. Will try again!
Wow 199!!
Thank you so much for taking the time (months!!) to make this video for us!! Gardeners are the best!! ❤️🌳❤️
What is the tree with a white flower
We were given 5 magnolia seeds from a tree that we'd planted at our first home ten years ago. The current owner met my bestie via a plant purchase and gave her the seeds to give to me ❤
That's so sweet. 😭
I love it!
My cousins and I used to climb the 2 magnolias in my grandma's front yard. My grandparents have since passed, and I collected a couple seed pods from them today to grow for my own (future) grandkids to climb.
Growing up in WI and moving to the south ive NEVER seen a magnolia tree seed pod. I thought it was the coolest thing.
I grabbed seeds from my magnolia last October, did this, and now the first sapplings are coming up. Stratification was such a cool thing to see (btw I’d recommend the drawer in the garage rather than the fridge as the ones I put in the fridge were unsuccessful). Thank you for sharing, can’t wait to see how mine grow!
The ones that go in the fridge need a period of time to wake back up .You can't go from fridge to dirt as that's not how nature works it goes from fall to winter then spring and summer .sounds like you took your seeds through winter ok but then put them directly into summer thinking they would go .after you take them from the fridge it's best to wait a few weeks after moving the seeds to a warmer area
Interesting. So, guess I'll take my next 20 seeds and divide them up and try a couple few diff stratification locations.
I was at a park with my kids and found a seed pod(without the seeds on it). I thought it was very paculiar looking and felt oddly "furry". Out of weirdness, i hung onto it. 2 years later, i now know what it is. 😅🧐. I still have it and now am subsribed to your channel. You are very informative and take time to actually follow up with progression videos. Thanks so much.
This is such a wholesome post. 💛 be blessed my friend. 😍🥰😘
Just now finding this video and I want to say you did a great job. I love videos that take you from start to finish ❤️
The first time I saw a Magnolia Tree was just a few months ago in Florida. The massive white blooms were absolutely breathtaking. My 9 yo daughter actually found a pod outside under the tree and thought I may be able to grow one of my own. After watching your video I realize it’s just the pod with no seeds on it. LOL!
😁💝
How cute bless your heart. I’d have done the same probably lol!!😅
It’s funny how we learn about things with plants/seeds/gardening, in general! There’s so much trial and error, unless you actually look it up and learn about the process. Speaking of that I have several plants I need to look up like my avocado seedling plant, and how long till it can produce the fruit?…Vegetable?..Nut?
🥑🤔who knows? 😂 Take care!
Very detailed but not overly long! Great amount go info and can't wait to grow my own! THANK YOU for sharing Gods peace and love!! Very Evident Brother!!
Amen, Glad you enjoyed
Yay your back!
Thanks so much for the video. Yes it looks quite easy. I grew up in Mississippi and I remember a magnolia in the backyard that was taller than the house. I would climb it to the top and mom would totally freak out. Now I'm looking to have a magnolia in my yard again, and I just had a massive (but dead) oak tree removed. I'm going to try to plant a magnolia in that space. This is how I prefer to honor my Mississippi heritage, with something that has no political affiliation.
That’s really cool. In 1978 my wife and I, after building our first home bout some Rhodedendron trees which turned out to be magnolias. We bought them from the National Arber Day Foundation. We live in central Wv and Magnolia are fairly rare.😊
Thanks so much for this video! I collected some magnolia tree seeds today and can’t wait to get started.
Happy to hear!
thank you so much for putting all the steps in one video! very helpful-can’t wait to try it!
So glad your back my yard has 3 red oaks and 12 burr white oaks thanks to you 🌿☘️🌱🌳
How did you stratify them? Did you use soil from around your area or a nutrient mix? And did you do outdoor or indoor stratification?
I used compost from my garden and topsoil from my garden for the bur oaks 🌳 and I just put the whole acorn in to a pot with the soil outside, and they came up and the red oaks need to be put in to a plastic bag with damp napkins over winter and then put in a pot with any kind of soil
Thank you so much for this. I have a beautiful magnolia tree in my front yard where I've rented for 3 years and this year I really connected to and fell in love with her. Was planning on doing some magic and with her and I Think I'll try my hand at this too. :)
I just scored 3 pods on the side of the road, so excited! Thanks for this!
Found my first seeds today and finished watching your video! I’m so excited to give this a try 😁 thank you for this informative video!!
I had seen your video 2-3 months ago and i finally got seeds so watched again and did it. 10 sinkers and 1 floater. We will see
This is great! I've been wanting to cultivate some magnolias and unexpectedly acquired several dozen seeds this morning. Now I know what to do 😃
Loving this, kid! Me and my kids thank you!
Great and informative video, appreciate the time this must’ve took to make! I look forward to growing some Magnolias myself.
Thank you for making and sharing this. About to clean and stratify ours for Spring.
THANK YOU! I’ve been wanting to try growing one!
I live in South florida, and we have southern magnolia trees. I just gathered some seeds from a tree that I saw in a shopping plaza. I'm looking forward to growing in magnolia tree for my own thank you!
Thank you I went to Houston and trees were dropping magnolia seeds so I gathered some. I've kept the seed about 7 years not knowing how to plant them.so now you've shown how to plant them. Thank you very much.
Awesome video man! Currently trying this out as we speak with a very special magnolia tree. Would also love to see a video done on tips for Home Depot fruit trees. I’d love to be able to pick peaches or apples from my yard.
I just collect seeds from my 4yo., black tulip magnolia. Im pretty excited to try this as this tree was not cheap lol!! Thank you🌳❤🌷
Love the tree.
Absolutely excellent video!! I’m going to follow your directions for myChinese Magnolia. Thanks a million!!
Very informative. Thanks
You are so precious. I love your whole vibe and the fact that you're out here planting trees. Thanks for looking out for the future generations and for those of us who can't find directions in the library 😂
...that was the most beautiful seed pod i've ever seen...🌲...❤...
This is very helpful from the stratification of pine trees I am now subscribed to you.😀
Very informative and easy to follow thank you for the awesome information keep up the videos !
Thank you for sharing! This was helpful for me to experiment with Magnolias.
Awesome video, You took it by the steps which is greatly appreciated. Certainly will try this one. I try to root many plants from seeds and cutting even a Crape Myrtle which I still don't have luck with that but I keep trying. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much! This was super informative 🙏🏽
Perfect!! Thank you for sharing you make it see so easy,I'm going to try.
Very helpful!! Thanks
Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Just what I need to watch thank you
So excited!
I’m in Florida and seems there’s a lot of Magnolia trees.
Just a thank you. In pittsburgh I’m having a hard time finding the large flowering dark green shiny leaf magnolia. So I will be following your directions. Crossed fingers I will have a beautiful blooming tree in 10 yrs. Thank you.
How is your tree? I'm in Pittsburgh and just discovered the magnolia tree. It has no leaves but millions of huge flowers 🌺🌺🌺 I'm going to keep an eye on seed pods come fall
Good information
Great video. Thank you for sharing.🎉
Really like your videos, plan to start scouting out parks for red oak trees to pick up acorns here in the near fall. I got a bit impatient and bought 5 red oak samplings from ebay for $14 shipped so want to compare how those turn out to planting my own red oaks from acorns. Keep up the good work :-)
This is one amazingly helpful video. Thanks for sharing. I'm starting now. Just soaking seeds
Great video I’m going to try this.
Fantastic video thanks
I’m doing an air layering on my magnolia tree but am not so sure that it’ll work.
I like and appreciate how you took us through all the steps. I’ll definitely give this a try. Thank you for all the time you put into this👍🏼
Just be patient. You posted this 10 months ago. I probably wouldn’t expect an air layer to be ready much sooner than 10-12 months. Layering can be really successful but it can take a long time. I think done conifers need more that 2 years to reliably root on lower limbs when layered, some stuff will root in week but not many trees.
@@swayback7375 It worked! Last month I was happily surprised to see thick roots showing through the plastic bag.
I put it in a pot waiting for more roots to develop so I can finally put it in a privileged location in my garden.
@@gigidi6816 when layering wait until the bag is full of roots before collecting then after you collect mix up some perlite pine bark and Pete moss and plant your air layer into a pot not much larger than the root mass just so you can put some of this free draining soil mix around the root mass . Then let the tree establish new roots and fill that pot with roots .once it becomes root bound you can then either up pot it or put it into the ground . Use a balanced fertilizer and feed it lots the first couple years but only feed after it's established itself bc the fertilizer can burn these fresh roots on air layers .
Best tutorial yet ❤️🥰
Hey. Thanks so much. Very grateful. 💙💙💙
Just saw red berries on our tree! Thank you for this helpful video!
Informative thank u!
Keep em coming Jcash! Need Trevor to start up a gaming channel!
The effort you put into this video was appreciated!!!! It made it so much better than the others I've watched
Thank you
Great video, very much appreciated 👍🏻
Thank you so much! Very educational 👍
Great video. Appreciated the info
Wow that you so much for this video! We live in the south and my favorite tree is magnolia so I’ve collected a few pods and I’m following all of your directions! I’m soaking them at this point to take the shells off :) I hope you will make more videos soon! God bless
thank you!, so well explained!, i will try my owns now.
Loved This Video! Thank you so much! So helpful!
You are awsome brother.Thank you.
Love the video man thanks
Ok Great video thx I’m going to try this
Thank you so much for showing this.
This was great, please make more seed starting videos!
Good information thanks
Can I just add: even after watching this, I didn't fully appreciate how much of the bulk of the seed is that soft jacket, or how small and hard the kernel is. I soaked and was afraid to really squeeze at first because I thought I was damaging them! 🤣 In reality the part you want is a rock hard fraction of what you start with, and if it's healthy, you cannot damage it with your fingers.
I now have several dozen chilling in a bag of dirt and am looking forward to some spring planting. Maybe the spring after next I'll share them around town.
Awesome! I know the seeds are very dense and hard!
You did it so good 👏👏👏👏🌷🌿👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💯♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Very helpful thank you
Gracias por explicar tan detalladamente Dios te bendiga 😊
Thanks for the video hun. I've been out scouting for a Teddy Bear magnolia aka Southern Charm. They are smaller and perfect for potting for a while. I found one in my neighborhood and grabbed a seed pod.
Awesome, happy to hear!
I really like those Teddy Bear varieties too, but I'm curious to know if they will breed true from seed, or if they'll revert back to a larger parent variety.
Thanks for the very helpful video! We planted a beautiful Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia in our front yard 2 years ago and are moving next week, so I collected as many seeds as I could yesterday in hopes of ending up with around 8 trees to plant around the new property. I am curious how long you recommend keeping them in pots before transplanting them to their permanent location? We live in Northwest Arkansas if that makes any difference for your recommendation. I just discovered you channel today so I am looking forward to watching your catalogue!
Mersi!
That was good
Excellent tutorial. One for the ages. Especially waiting over the winter and showing them being planted then growing! Question, are they rooting because of they know it is spring, or did you take them out of the fridge a couple of weeks prior?
So Guys! .... but seriously great intro video. I'm gonna do this in florida
If you can believe the Magnolia trees have created seeds in summer.
Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much
enjoyed your video!!! My magnolia tree had 2 pods grow and stay on this year and I got 13 seeds off of it. I will use your process to see what happens!!! When you put the seeds in the pots how often do you water them? How are the little trees doing so far?
Thank you I recently moved and I have this tree but I wasn't aware of what to do
I’m sure the Woodpeckers wouldn’t mind if I removed one pod! They just love these red berries. They come once a year when the seeds are ripe. It’s fun to watch them eat the seeds and also when they hang inside down getting the seeds on the bottom of pod.
I had no idea magnolia tree pod seeds can produce another tree! I’m not patient like you are, I’ll just buy another one! But great to know!! Thank you!
Patience is a virtue. I've learned through my aquarium hobby that most of the best things come to those who wait. I've always loved to test my patience and get better at waiting, all the time! Also to each is own. ☺️😴
Well followed your directions and they grew great. I've got 15 ½ gallon pots with beautiful magnolia trees booming out, im going to switch them to 2 gallon tubs this weekend. But just wanted to say great video. What part of Tennessee are you from, I have family all around middle Tennessee.
I have a magnolia tree in my back yard that is fairly large. Going to gather the seeds, I see them falling to the ground now. My mom always wanted a magnolia tree, I’m going to surprise her for her birthday with a sapling!
I found these beautiful red seeds on the street and can’t believe how bright the colours were, and here I am finding out all about them
Nice vlog! Great presentation. Very useful vlog! I am a new subscriber to your channel.
Justina😍
We had success with our seeds. Reviewing now so we can start some more.
Can we make magnolia into a bonsai?
I found some seed pods and did like you said but I was wondering if that's soil in the bag and if wet sand would work for stratification?
I agree with the whole video, the only thing I typically don't do is the "quick little stir"
What’s in bag is it dirt I got my seeds in Collierville Tennessee
I got some magnolia pods today the 21st of October 2022 and I don't have time to get those little seeds out tonight and what should I do with them keep them in the plastic bag I brought them home in or what cuz I'm going to do that soaking thing tomorrow that you talked about but I need to know what to do between 10:30 Eastern standard Time today until tomorrow
Can I put the planted seeds under full spectrum lights indoors, until they’re bigger saplings? If having the pots outdoors, what is the best lighting conditions?
Thanks for the video. May I ask what type of soli you are using? Anything specifically needed for the seeds to grow?
I'm really excited for spring my dog recently ate my other plant so I'm looking for something else to plant🤣
Use a 10" tall pot to start any tree. It'll give you the best growth for the first year. I use a 3.5" x 11" potting bag which are very inexpensive and great for "nursery" type applications, or if you are addicted to growing as most of us get lol
Thanks for this informative video! Is there a specific type of soil or soil composition that you recommend when storing them in the plastic bag for winter? Thanks!
Anything will work just don't use fine grain sand ...i put my seeds into the fridge with no dirt
