We celebrated Burns night here in Denmark the proper way. I made haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky-cream sauce and afterwards we enjoyed a dram in my beautiful “Bonnie Prince-Jacobyte” glasses. It was brilliant!
Those pies look delicious and what a great idea. Nearly everything is better wrapped in pastry! Although I haven’t got a Scottish bone in my body, Burns Night is my mother’s birthday (as of Saturday, she’s 93 years young) so we always have haggis on the 25th. I cooked the vegetarian version for mum. Down on the south coast of England, only veggie was left when I popped into the supermarket, but it was still very tasty - a bit like an ultra savoury nut roast with lots of barley. So here’s to all the lassies and laddies!!
First I had to look up what a Burns supper was, then I looked up Haggis. It looks like a really good supper and I will try it here in Montana with hamburger as we don't sell Haggis. I love all of your tea's and love watching your show.
When I was in Scotland last year ( and adore it there !!💗 tried haggis...don'[t need to have it again :) I couldn't get enough Scottish cheddar though Ohhh it was soooo good !!! Your dinner looks lovely ! tfs 💗💗💗
Voice typing made that come out in all capitals! I am having haggis neeps and tatties done like cottage pie. With my father having been from Scotland I wouldn't dare not have it on what he used to call Rabbie Bairns night! :-)
Looks delicious! Thanks for sharing this recipe! I'm a fairly new subscriber. I look forward to more recipes. My husband & I both have Scottish ancestry. I think he'd like me to cook up an authentic traditional Scottish meal from time to time. 😊
All looks lovely 😋 Received my Degusto winning box and opened it tonight, thrilled with the contents and my sister in law and myself are looking forward to trying the contents! Thank you so much Cheryl x
That looks soooo good! I didn't think I would like haggis at all. I am not a kidney or liver person. But when I was in Scotland last year I had to try it ! I had it 3 times while I was and each place I had it was just do delicious! The only way I can get haggis is if I buy it in a can from Amazon. I want to try it but not sure it would be like the real thing.
Where you from, Melissa? In the UK nearly all supermarkets sell haggis. The ones produced in Scotland are obviously better tasting. I tasted one (cheaper) which said 'produce of Cornwall' and it was awful!
Awesomeness! I actually have a vegetarian Haggis (blasphemy, I know LOL!) over at a friend's freezer, as we only had a small group for Burns Night, so we didn't need both versions cooked. I'm not sure if we'll do individual or just one, big pie - I'll have to run that past them. This recipe will be *a lot* easier than my "destroy the whole kitchen" adventure with my first go-round. 😅
Did you make the vegetarian haggis? I am not really fond of haggis at all, but the potatoes and turnips are something I can probably seriously survive on alone if I had to. Lol. I love turnips with anything really. But I'm intrigued by the vegetarian haggis. Do you have a recipe or did you just find one through Google? :)
Looks gorgeous. I always put white pepper in my carrot and swede mash too, how weird because I use black pepper in everything else, great minds think alike maybe? 😂. I was thinking of doing a recipe for the cheese and potato pie as your said Mr WFT likes anything with mash and baked beans.. xxx
I'm not sure I can come up with any haggis in my rural area, but I imagine you could make some sort of meat or hamburger type mixture for the bottom layer. You can't really go wrong with this recipe! :)
Neeps and tatties will straighten your Hattie! Needs a mushroom duxelle to go with that cream sauce!😃 That looks good Cheryl. How many grams is that package of puff pastry? 1.30 I think you paid we pay about 5 dollars for one package. I will look at the store next time and see how many grams it is. I will take a picture and send it to you so you can see!
The name intrigued me but I only knew the name of the tatties. I'm in Idaho USA and they certainly have potatoes here. Not sure if haggis is allowed over the border, though! Haha! Even though I graduated culinary school, I never had haggis. Really not sure why not. Thanks for the lovely video.
Jane you live in tattie country! All those Russets! I am sure you can find Haggis just search British Stores or Amazon or your local butchers who cater to anyone from the UK. So meat pie guys and the like.

Turnips vs swede. When I was young we called swede turnip and never had the root we call turnip now. We made turnip lanterns for Halloween out of swedes. For context, I'm over 60 and from Lancashire in the north of england (not too far from Scotland :)).
I was just about to ask before video ended is the pastry cooked underneath!......and yes, it’s golden brown! These look absolutely delish! Where did you get those pie dishes please!?
Wish we could get real Haggis here in the USA. We either have to settle for tinned Haggis, or some made here in the states, without all the true ingredients. 😒
Tinned haggis is a weak imitation. Try looking for a Caledonian society [or Royal Scottish Country Dance Society branch :) ] and you might get hooked up. We had a guy who would make it-- too many years ago-- for our Burns Night. Best gravy is a dram of malt, though, so mayhap I'm a bit astray...
Hi Cheryl~~ To be honest I’ve never liked the sound of haggis but that looks absolutely delicious.I would definitely eat one..Do you think it would be ok if I made an onion gravy instead of a cream and mustard one..Have a great rest of the weekend and a great week..Sending love and hugs as always~~ Xxx Xxx
Well, after reading the comments I'm afraid to ask, but what is the ingredient list on the haggis. We don't have it here in the US or perhaps it goes by another name. I've heard stories about those folks who won't touch it. I'm just curious.
@TheRenaissanceman65 Eww. It would be a matter of having grown up with it or being an adventurous eater. Neither applies to me. Thanks for the explanation. I am curious about what spices one w would use beside salt and pepper?
Dear Cheryl, this looks amazing. Unfortunately I can't get haggis locally, but I saw on ebay Stahly-brand haggis in a tin. Do you think it would make a good enough substitute? Could I use it in a similar way to how you're using it?
I’m drooling🤤 That looks amazing! I’ll b on the hunt for ready made haggis. Question too: Anyone able to tell me the taste differences between swede and turnips/rutabaga? I love turnips and rutabaga and make French soups with them, and eat them mashed, but IMO they taste different from each other. Thoughts? And in the US swede is celery’s root bulb...is this the same thing? I’m just curious...I love all root vegetables and they’re super healthy. This recipe is so lovely! (P.S. I froze my rumbledethumps after the first night, and they reheat fabulously!!!!! Def making that again soon!)
Cheryl, what does haggis taste like? I don't think it is available in the States. (If it is, I hope someone will correct me.) I am wondering if I could make or buy a sausage alternative.
I just priced Haggis made by a Scottish butcher here in Sydney, Australia, and it's about $AU39.00 (about £20.00) per kg. The photo on his website looks very similar to Scott Rea's Haggis, linked in my other comment below. Never having tasted Haggis in my life, (even though I'm part Scottish on my father's side), I'd love to try it, but at about $AU10.00 (£5.07) per pie, the cost of making it is a little bit out of my league, I'm afraid.
I must say I wasn’t impressed with Simon Howies haggis when we had it for Burns night. It didn’t seem to have as much spice/flavour as I like. My husband liked it though.
What's For Tea? Here in the US everyone likes to make fun of haggis but I’m open to try anything. There’s a meat store here in town that sells everything from live lobster to goose. They might carry haggis :)
This does look like a delicious meal, however after reading what haggis is (and then having to look up the word offal), I wonder how this would be with ground beef instead?
