Word for word, theis lady nailed it when it comes to describing my feelings. Throw me in an elevator with suits, and we’re besties by the time we reach their floor. But cold calling? I practically have a panic attack of social anxiety. Thanks for the video!
Try comparing to how many cold callers handle calling you while they catch you at a bad time. You can be saying hello to a cold caller and the cold caller can give a silent treatment. In that moment, customers would already hang up all because the cold caller was too scared to even introduce themselves. There are many cold callers in the world who have anxiety and once they initiated a call on customer and the customer respond with hello, the cold caller would already froze in fear not saying a single word. Some cold callers chickens out but as long as you at least do some work, then you are better then those who chickened out of the call. It is expected that many cold callers will be nervous. There are some who don't know how to hide it. There are many cold callers who don't even know how to make their phone call count.
Oh my fucking god, when Josh asked her to pretend he was a friend when he says I’m on the way to the hospital, was literally a light bulb moment for me right now
I work in D2D, the biggest breakthrough i made was realizing i put to much of my self worth and identity into my performance, money i was making. This is an issue because you avoid no, every possible rejection at the door becomes a no to your self worth. Detach your self worth from your performance and detach yourself from the result. Attach yourself to the process and the activity. Another thing i had to overcome was the feeling that i was bothering people, if you believe you are potentially helping them, you can justify taking part in the activity. Wish i saw this video years ago lol. So much anxiety, stress could have been avoided. Reached the level i am much earlier.
I struggle with this as well and have for over a decade, even though rejection is not personal it feels personal and my body just has this adverse reaction to it, its that combined with the feeling I am bothering people, even though I know its my job to call and I have a product that helps people, those are my two biggest struggles, i have literally had panic attacks before calling and often call in sick cause I am so scared to cold call, but on the days I just focus and call, I am able to book meetings, but its hard to focus when anxiety creeps up and you can't book meetings. And you are also right about us attaching our self worth to the call, thats what I do, like today I did book a meeting and I felt good and now I feel like I will have a good weekend, but I want to be able to enjoy my weekend without having to book a demo...Its also very hard not to feel pressure when your managers put pressure on you to hit quota. So I get what Josh is saying but leadership needs to be on board as well so we don't feel so much pressure
This guy is right, because he's building a connection which is an important part of sales. People buy because they like you. He's being human. Also, in her instance, I would also prepare rebuttals. In the instance of; "I am busy", saying something like; "Oh hey prospect, I completely understand, this will only take a quick minute" and going into your pitch/question will help you assume the business. I prefer a question because it redirects the conversation. IE: "I have your address here as x", or if you're trying to pitch something, you can ask them "What service do you currently use", if you want an appointment, say; "I was wanting to drop by tomorrow, would 10 or 2 work better for you?" Questions = Control. If you redirect to a question, you control the conversation flow. As long as you ask questions, you're in control. FYI, Not everyone who says they're 'busy' are truly 'busy', and if you're paying for leads, you're going to burn up allot taking people's words for things. If its a true objection, they'll say it twice or hang up. Not saying my recommendations will fix anxiety, but it will help some, and make you feel like you have at-least a direction to go down.
I totally understand where she's coming from , I worked in a call center for 2 years as a salesperson I used to cold call people try to sell them different stuff from white goods insurance to call blockers and I had to make people give me their banking details on the phone so it's way harder than just book a meating the anxiety of thi job is something else
My problem with cold calling is fear of rejetion, I got rejected so many times and I started avoiding it and even when I do it I become so uncomfortable, the joke is in my first days I was doing it on a chill mode but with time and accumilation of rejections I started having fear from cold calling someone, the worst part is I'm on my 6th month of running my business and still no clients.
Similar thing happened to me and this video made me realize it full circle. In the beginning I really didn’t care about setting meetings I just wanted to learn more about the prospect and see if it made sense to. Most the time people won’t be a fit but it’s not your fault. As I got fully into the role and worried more about how many meetings I was booking I started getting tons of anxiety because I was going into every call thinking “I have to book this meeting”
For me its very specific. Dwp , Hmrc, insurance companies and creditors. It just feels like interaction with them will destroy my life. However me refusing to interact with them has repeatedly destroyed my life . Its basically a phobia of interaction with authority . I don't feel it in a work setting. I dont see an employer as an auth😢figure its a customer buying my time i can happily sell it somewhere else just as easy. Theres no imbalance of power. They couldn't just destroy your whole life with you have no way to fight back.
I am trying to build my own business in the automotive trade. My cold calling is mostly in person visits. Not going well because I avoid drop ins. Any advice?
OK, hear me out. If my friend asks me if I'm OK, I will feel the connection. If a voice that I have never heard asks me if everything is OK because I'm on my way to the hospital, I would really take offense to it because it's not your damn business if I'm OK. I'm at lunch, and the last thing I want to share is my lunchtime with a salesman, no matter how friendly they are. Am I right? Just being 100% honest, I feel very intrusive when I cold call people.
Then you shouldn't be in sales. You're offering a service with value, if you don't value your product your service and what you can do for them, then this isn't for you. Life is interrupted by a lot of things all the time. Get over it and make the calls.
Normally, in a cold calling business, when you ask them is this a good time, the answer is always no. You cannot expect to be appreciated with your work from your customers. Why do you think it is called cold calling? Because when you call, you expect your customers to be cold to you. Can't expect to be welcome with open arms. So normally, if you get a mindset of not wanting to bother people, you cannot sign up to be a cold caller. Once you cold call, you are supposed to be prepared to bother them and when they tell you to go away, your job is to put up with them angry at you. You can't argue back because customers have a power to hang up on you. If you feel intrusive, doing cold calling business is not a right job for you. In cold calling business, you are trained to get out of your comfort zone every time you make a call. If you don't want to spend the rest of your time bother people, cold calling is not for you to commit to.
Tried the be the human thing....I can't tell you how many times I got "that's none of your business" 😂 Not saying it's not valid advice...just sharing my personal experience

Josh this was freaking money! A wise investment of my lunch break

Dude's a great teacher, because he allows his student room for error, so that they learn correctly.
Wow! The worth being attached to the call!! So clear

Wow I have to subscribe and stay tuned in. That's wonderful. Thanks😊
Great video. Im an SDR in Austin, TX. Really liking some of your stuff man.
Thanks, glad it was helpful.
I really appreciate this advice because this is what I do, but I never knew how to explain it. Treat them like humans during human moments.
This is honestly my issue when it comes to cold outreach. The outcome. Not the human element.
Watch this video over and over till you get it and you'll never be the same
Maaaan you're the Beast of calling Calling.
Wow Josh, just amazing :-)
proceeds a follow up question: who are you? Why are you asking me about this, what do you want?
wow this is an incredibly helpful and perspective shifting video.
For me its very specific. Dwp , Hmrc, insurance companies and creditors. It just feels like interaction with them will destroy my life. However me refusing to interact with them has repeatedly destroyed my life . Its basically a phobia of interaction with authority .
