He went out for a "calming smoke" before calling emergency services, even though his sister was still moving during that phone call? Yeah, absolutely appalling. Glad he's behind bars.
Honestly since he's the murderer I don't understand why he would violently attack her so badly and not finish the job? It's risky isn't it? And he clearly wasn't in a rush.

"The blood was flowing down the stairs like a waterfall.".. The absolute most chilling sentence ive ever heard in 33 yrs of life. ...and this guy was sooooooo calm during the 911 call.
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. As far as the 911 call he almost sounded annoyed that he was being asked all these questions,... true sociopath,.. unable to relate to, or even fake genuine human emotion.
To be fair a lot of men go into shell shock and aren't able to show their emotions properly. It's not a negative statement about men just a factual one. I prefer to go off actual evidence and inconsistencies in interrogations rather than strange reactions to trauma as there are all types.
11:30 "Had you ever thought of the possibility of consoling them in their death? ... they're dying... make if comfortable..." completely gets him unexpectedly and leaves him off balance. He is literally speechless.
I’m surprised Henry hadn’t died of old age by the time the police got there at the speed that call operator was going. The creepy part is, if he’d tried to pin it on Marley’s boyfriend, he might have got away with it.
Nope. They checked security cameras and registry of the main gate so they knew of ever person who came and went for days. The perimeter fence/ boundary wall also had no alarms triggered before or after the time of the attack. Knowing how good some security estates are in South Africa will help you understand how difficult (but not impossible) it would be for an intruder to go unnoticed especially when thoroughly investigated. Other estates in SA... not so much.
This is a stupid thing to think. I've been in shock. I was very calm and monotone while I was bleeding out in front of my baby sister after being hit by a car going 45 while I was crossing the street. I was hit so hard it knocked my boots and my pants of. Shock doesn't allow you to feel the damage, physical or emotional. It's survival. I'm not saying he didn't do it, I'm saying that's an ignorant reason to say someone is guilty of something.

I just can’t imagine how devastating it must to be to realize the person murdering you is your own immediate family...your own child, your own sibling. The confusion & emotional torment they must have felt in those short moments is too much...
Ugh. I can't even _imagine_ being woken up to realize my brother had attacked my parents & was coming at me with violent intent. You'd be so unable to comprehend what was happening, then feel crushing betrayal. It's honestly impressive the daughter managed to defend herself at all (it was probably instinctual at that point) I'm glad she can't remember it, for her sake.
Henri’s story is completely unbelievable. It’s absurd. His entire family was viciously attacked by a man with an axe, yet the attacker takes out a knife to (non-fatally) stab him? Nope.
You know what's so sad? Our Mike won't ever run out of cases to cover. There will always be murders to discuss and try to understand. What about when he was on the stand being asked why he didn't try to help or comfort them as they were dying? That was some shit acting if I ever saw any. BAD faker. lol
Hey That Chapter.. Here’s an interesting fact.. I used to be Henri’s guitar teacher when he was in high school.. in Perth Australia.. I also taught one of his good school friends at the time.. hearing the news when this all came out was shocking.. having spent considerable time with him over a year or so.. you could never have guessed this was going to happen.. During that time he came across as a perfectly normal teen.. you can never really know a person..
Dazza 85 I used to live in a bad part of zagreb and there drugs where very very common we never even dared to go outside in the night or alone the school was bad and everybody had bad grades and I was also very sad and unmotivated even tho I loved school when before I immigrated to croatia thank god that I live far away from there and everything is going great this just shows how drugs have a worse affect than poverty in some places (not extreme poverty but poverty where people have food and a place to stay at but very hardly earn more money than what is considered minimum to survive
Hmmm, maybe, just maybe....he’s innocent. Have you looked past the headlines and rumors? If the media portrayal of a person doesn’t jive with the actual living, breathing person you knew, maybe...the media is wrong? There’s faaaaar more to the story than Mike gave. He gave a very brief and somewhat inaccurate synopsis of the case. Do a little digging.
Dazza 85 It was never, ever proven he was on drugs. His toxicology the day of the murders was negative, for everything. Including alcohol. The prosecution was never able to substantiate the rumor beyond some guy named “Mark” who lived in a shack and picked out his picture, after it had been in the news. That’s literally it. His medical history showed zero evidence of drug use. Pathetic how easy it is to convince the populace of a lie. It’s actually terrifying how easy it is. Next time you want to jump on the bandwagon, stop and think “what if this was me? What if this was a loved one?” Is this how you’d want to be treated? Think you’ll never, ever have trouble with the law? Yeah, well, literally everyone who finds themselves there never thought it could ever happen to them. Funny how something like “innocent until proven guilty” and “beyond a reasonable doubt” are completely thrown out the window...until it’s you on the receiving end.
Surprised you didn't mention that the 911 call took 30 mins, the woman was completely unable to locate the street and thought it was a prank call. The whole call was a weird train wreck, he was super calm and never got angry. Oh-I thought she was keeping him on the line while sending police. Actually, at first I thought "This woman is an idiot," then decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.

At the end when the judge was reading out the sentence, the guy that killed his family looked completely empty, his eyes were black and dead What a sad story
If you see the photos of him from when the murders happen to the day of sentencing, there is a marked difference in his appearance. He lost a fair amount of weight and his eyes become more sallow and dark. It’s like seeing the life drain out of him. People point to this as proof of his guilt, but I question: what would happen to you, if you were under such extreme duress as watching your whole family die, then looking at life in prison for something you didn’t do? What if...he IS innocent? The investigation was a joke. Only 35% of this alleged “fortress like fence” was actually covered by CCTV. They had had numerous robberies in that community in the months leading up to the murders. There was an alarm that went off the night of the murders, with the security dismissing it and resetting it. The family often kept the back door unlocked for the domestic staff. Moreover, the supposed drug abuse was NEVER proven. It all stems from some guy living in a shack that picked out Henri’s picture AFTER the murders were reported in the news. My point is, I don’t think his guilt was proven beyond a reasonable doubt. People point to his affect on the emergency call. Well, I know people like this, who keep a lot of emotion inside. Who act cool but are not inside. Not that they’re bottling things up, they’re just not hyper-emotional. Not everyone is the same. And I despise people who say “that’s not what I would do”. How do you know? I honestly have no idea how I’d react in such a situation. Some people emotionally shut down. I’ve heard from many survivors that they don’t have an emotional response until hours, sometimes days after. There’s a sense of it all being so unreal. I’m not saying he didn’t do it. But there’s a lot of unanswered questions and way too much conjecture to say he absolutely did.
@@genuineimitation8799 I've been in that position. Free Range I’m sorry that happened to you. One thing I’ve discovered, and never really thought about before I started down this particular rabbit hole, is just how common stories like yours are. People convicted of heinous crimes and later exonerated by DNA evidence. Convictions that hinged on witness testimony that later turned out to have been coerced by police, and on and on. It’s frightening just how easy it is to be convicted of a crime with little evidence. You are right. It’s not the prosecution that needs to prove it’s case, it’s the defense that must prove their clients innocence.
For those saying "why didn't he finish her off" he no doubt believed he had. Why didn't the supposed attacker(s) finish him off? And leave him virtually unscathed? As for the drugs...he was arrested for it, it wasn't just a "rumour" Plenty of evidence pointing to his guilt
I thought same. Definitely has a meth face especially around his eyes. He's creepy for sure and his face looking stone during the verdicts was telling.
Not defending him, but some people “ shut down” during traumatic events and can be mistaken for emotionless. I find people that obviously fake emotions like that escort in Florida who tried to get her husband killed much creepier.
It's tik not tick. I read that they didn't find any drugs in his system that night. I'm from South Africa and followed this case, perhaps the papers kept that part out because I wouldn't be surprised if he tikked before calling the police. Tik is a huge problem here, especially in Cape Town.
That social worker literally said "I don't see any reason why he would do something like this, so he couldn't have done something like this" (18:22) Like, what? Was she expecting to talk to any murderer and go "You know? I really see where you were coming from. avithemostill Maybe he’s telling the truth. Home invasions, where murder is THE only motive, are not in any way out of the ordinary for SA. It’s also not uncommon, at all, for the murder weapon to come from the home, but in Henri’s case, it was never proven. They had two witnesses that testified in this regard: Marli’s boyfriend who said he saw a black headed axe outside by their fire pit and the domestic worker that said she saw a similar one in the pantry. She stated, clearly, that she could not say it was THE SAME AXE, only that it looked similar. I wonder how many green headed (not black), wooden handled axes are in homes all across SA right now. Probably a lot. I could probably go to Home Depot right now and buy something similar. I also find it interesting that his father had over 25 businesses, dealing in hundreds of millions (if not billions) of dollars, his brother (Martin’s) said he was “going to change SA”. Well, perhaps there are those who don’t want SA to change, or to change the way Martin intended. There’s a ridiculous amount of corruption in both the SA government and police force. It’s going through massive issues right now, there are farm massacres constantly there. I think there’s a possibility the Van Breda’s were targeted. The estate was not anywhere near as “impenetrable” as the prosecution stated. The defense had very reasonable, if not compelling, testimony and evidence to the contrary. There’s a lot to this case that makes it not so cut and dry. Western justice relies on two absolutely crucial edicts, one: INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty (not guilty by the court of public opinion until proven innocent, an impossibility for anyone) and two: guilty beyond a REASONABLE doubt. In other words, the accused is innocent until and unless the state can PROVE GUILT beyond any reasonable doubt. I do not think the state of SA did this by any stretch. They never did state a motive. Never even brought it up. Why didn’t the state posit drug abuse? Because they couldn’t prove it. No evidence for it at all. Why didn’t they state money as a motivation? Because Henri wasn’t going to inherit that money anyway. This according to the family, family friends and the lawyer representing the estate. That money went into a trust. It wasn’t like he was magically going to get millions. Not at all. So, the fact that he was sober at the time of the murders (proven), he had no monetary motive (provable) and to this day has never said a negative thing about any of his family speaks volumes. He’s not psychopathic (proven) and has no history of violence. All this, plus so much more, leads me to believe he is likely innocent of this crime.
It’s actually a Blessing in Disguise that Marli couldn’t remember anything . She didn’t need to know how terrifying that attack was. So that’s good she won’t have flashbacks. All she needs to know is her family was murdered & her brother is responsible. Spare her the cruel details . 😔
Or completely resigned to his fate. I’m sure they were aware of the potential sentence once the guilty verdict was handed down. It looks like he is just affirming what he knew was coming.
Would an innocent man stand emotionless and in silence while being told he was found guilty of killing 3 family members? It's so obvious. He has an aunt and a girlfriend who think he didn't do it. The credulity of some people is astonishing.
Yes normal people can become emotionally detached after trauma. It's normal. Also, the judge normally has already warned everyone not to have emotional outbursts before they start the sentencing.
@@Preservestlandry Agreed. Most people have never faced anything even close to this. I imagine, if he is innocent, it would seem like a waking nightmare. A genuine “cannot believe this is happening” kind of moment. Most people think they’d be the hero, they’d fight the intruder off, they’d scream, they’d do this, do that. When it comes down to it though, chances are you will freeze. It isn’t just fight or flight. It’s fight, flight and freeze, with freezing being far more common. They’re thinking of how they would respond while sitting in their living room, calm, in no danger. Your brain does NOT respond the same during trauma as it does when not under extreme stress. I’d say being sentenced to three life sentences plus 15 years is an extremely stressful event. It comes down to this: however you *think* you’d act in such an extreme situation is likely nothing like what you’d actually do. People know nothing about human behavior, much less seen someone in a traumatic situation or been through one themselves.

@Zooted Ludes social workers are super underpaid and overworked in the US! And often the court system undermines their professional advice. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. As far as the 911 call he almost sounded annoyed that he was being asked all these questions,... true sociopath,.. unable to relate to, or even fake genuine human emotion.
To be fair, I do say it like I've just awoken to a house full of deadness and waterfall blood. :(
To be fair a lot of men go into shell shock and aren't able to show their emotions properly. It's not a negative statement about men just a factual one. I prefer to go off actual evidence and inconsistencies in interrogations rather than strange reactions to trauma as there are all types.
It's no use crying over spilt blood, as the saying goes

Omg I agree.
The 911 call had all the emotion of ordering a pizza....
Agreed....almost like Stephen Hawking ordering a pizza
The weirdest questions I've ever heard on a 911 call.
I disagree
This is a stupid thing to think. I've been in shock. I was very calm and monotone while I was bleeding out in front of my baby sister after being hit by a car going 45 while I was crossing the street. I was hit so hard it knocked my boots and my pants of. Shock doesn't allow you to feel the damage, physical or emotional. It's survival.

That's what drugs do to people! That's why you would think grown men who supposed to be responsible human beings would know that drugs are BAD!
Thank you for basically adding nothing
Imagine trying to call a cab and explaining for 20 mins your whole neighborhood, then add on that oh yeah your entire family just got attacked
Oh-I thought she was keeping him on the line while sending police. Actually, at first I thought "This woman is an idiot," then decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.

The dad was protecting the son, Rudy. The daughter likely survived bc she fought back and absorbed most of those blows with her hands while defending herself. Moral of the story: fight like your life depends on it.

At the end when the judge was reading out the sentence, the guy that killed his family looked completely empty, his eyes were black and dead
What a sad story
Just a curt nod after each “guilty”.
He was truly defeated, he held those tears back. This is by far my favorite episode. The judge spoke so well that his words really resonated

@@guillermo3564 Usually this is the case. Just this one time, everything was handled in the worst possible way (someone else here is suggesting to listening to the longer version of the call - a bunch of idiots) Appalling.
You shouldn't be a social worker if you can't see he's a sociopath.
Look at her. She’s clearly batshit or just an idiot.
She has the IQ of a tennis match.
Crazy eyes 👀
Maybe he is but you can't tell from a 20 min video.
Marley had a sliced jugular and survived for hours? That's kind of amazing.
Motive isn't required to be established when determining someone's guilt because as in this case, the guilty party can be just batshit crazy.
A “starry night” tie??? Really??! Bit of a fun tie to be wearing to court
i didnt even notice that LMAOOOO
Thank you for covering a case from my home country Mike and good job on the accent broer
Did we just get a early presents?
Best of luck to you in the new year!
You too! But I'll see you before then ;)
I count learning about family murders to my productive time.
Absolutely, never know when it'll come in handy
That Chapter 😂😂😂💖
1Schruller1 are you planning something? Lol!!!
I count learning about family murders as my PROTECTIVE time. Any time I think about trusting a man, I think again! It protects me!
Rest up because the Rhoden Family Massacre, will eventually bring the accused before a jury of their peers. Expect it to be a frenzy.
He didn't even flinch when they told him he was found guilty! Yeah, he totally did it!! Omg!!
While the judge was reading him his sentencing, it appeared to me that he was feeling a rather strong emotion internally leading up to and at the point his mother's name was read.
“were arrested for possession of the devil’s lettuce” he says as i look down at my bong
SAMEEE
Saaaame oops
Me too 🤣🤷🏻♀️ It’s recreationally legal in my state though.
I bet there's not meth in your bong tho, but there was in his. Big mistake
Lmao....I know right. Well mines a bowl not a bong...wish I still had my bong...may he rest in pieces 😩
To the social-worker the the end: You cannot look for a motive or logic when youre dealing with a psychopathic drug addict who has harmed his family
That social worker had crazy eyes. I think she was probably in love with him or something
People like her are a huge danger to society, enablers to psychopaths
She had the hots for him.
My sister is still alive and moving around but I need a “calming smoke” before I get help........yeah. THAT makes sense - IF YOU’RE A MURDERER! 😳😳😳
Lucky for her he didn't finish her off when he saw her moving. I wonder why... she could have been a witness. It's not like he knew she was going to lose her memory.
@@Neophema If it really was an attack caused by the effects of drugs on him, then reason is the last thing to consider. Who knows what went on in his brain after he came to himself and saw what he'd done.
Anyone who gets charged with obstruction of justice should be fined the rough amount of money law enforcement had to put into chasing those fake leads.
NO signs of remorse, grief, anger, protests of innocence. The look on his face: Unmoving, poker-faced, cold. The face of someone who's guilty. Who knows what went on behind closed doors. The social worker probably fell under his spell.
I could not beilieve that she said "As a professional I can´t believe he did that". On what grounds is she stating that? I agree with you that this woman was manipulated by him
i do not advocate judging people by their outward appearance and manner of speaking, but i have to say it it glaringly obvious there is something off about that social worker, clearly not very intelligent. really disturbing
Or the face of someone who has lost everything in life and has nothing to lose anymore. Funny how these days facts don't matter and feelings seem to be everything.
@@nw6070 What i personally find more disturbing is that you think you know more about her while you didn't spend one single second with her than she knows about this guy while spending hours on end with him. It's scary because it shows how much humanity has degraded.
@@TheGalantir facts? What facts are you basing that off? The facts are he coldly killed his family for money to do drugs and has shown not an once remorse. He can't even bring himself to fake empathy for his family. If he truly was sad and felt that he "lost everything" than he would try to make amends to the only family he has left, his sister. Hell he even made sure to smoke and get high before calling any aid because he wanted to make sure they died and the only thing this man cares about is drugs. If he truly believed he has nothing to loose he wouldn't keep up this act that he's innocent. Genuinely just the actions of someone who lacks empathy and isn't able to think about anyone but himself and this half assed excuse is just an insult to the intelligence of everyone here
2:50 he sounds like Hugh Grant flirting in a romantic comedy on the 911 call. "Oh botha, it appears someone has murdered my entire family. Do be a dear and send the meat wagon. Pip pip cheerio." Like damn bro, you sound super calm about all this.
@John D And you sound like your father.
Hugh Grant the famous South African actor? 😂
@@philwilson4167 Lmao, I JUST NOW rewatched this video and got what you were referencing. Oh lawdy, my bad.
He did it because his parents stopped giving him an allowance. His dad was a good man protecting his family
Literally none of that was proven. Total conjecture.
@@genuineimitation8799 that's all we have. Do you have a better explanation?
avithemostill Maybe he’s telling the truth.
Suuuuure
@@genuineimitation8799 I'm sure you'd leave your kids alone with him, right? 🙄
It’s actually a Blessing in Disguise that Marli couldn’t remember anything . She didn’t need to know how terrifying that attack was. So that’s good she won’t have flashbacks. All she needs to know is her family was murdered & her brother is responsible. Spare her the cruel details . 😔
He nodded his head each time that judge passed down his judgment. Certainly guilty ! What a sad sad story !
@NIKKIE NOVA Be upset
@NIKKIE NOVA upset and frustrated and probably in tears if he was innocent. But that's not the case with him.
@NIKKIE NOVA Plead his innocence while in tears of frustration would be a normal response of an innocent man.
"He was married to his wife"
You don't say?
Hahaha..😂😂😂
I was thinking that too
Some guys are I belive LOL
Haha
My dad was married to his wife before he met my mother. But after he got divorced and married my mother he was once again married to his wife.
That 911 phone call reminds me of the Trevor Noah joke when people call the police in South Africa... no sense of emergency at all. Lol

Thanks Mike for doing this one! I'm a South African and also live in SA. Huge case here.. All over the media. Awesome breakdown of the case from @thatchapter. Keep it up Mike!
Never knew about the drug addiction so thanks for that information. In my mind his parents reaction to finding out about it supplies the motive so I think he's guilty. That social worker, sorry but what planet is she living on? Probably thinks a good looking boy like that couldn't possibly be evil.
It’s hard to wrap our minds around the fact that people we meet/know in person, who seem very normal and friendly, are capable of such brutality. It’s actually a common reaction.
@Zooted Ludes social workers are super underpaid and overworked in the US! And often the court system undermines their professional advice. Between state social workers, the court system, families, and other components, the system is vey complex with lots of moving parts.
But many social workers have masters degrees & get ongoing career development training throughout their careers. They’re not that undereducated, at least in the 2 states I’ve lived in.
Lol that "lekker broer " impression killed me. You're officially a fellow South African. 🤣🤣😂

"Suspects still on scene sir?" ...."sorry?". That pause pretty much told us everything.
@Charles charlie charles although the operator's questions may seem a bit bizzarre, she needs to gather a lot of information in a short time in order not to send medics ina dangerous situation. When I heard what he said I immidiately thought of Stephen McDaniels case and the moment when he realized he fucked up. This was similar to me, a "oh shit I'm the suspect" kinda moment.
