Yep, I have a feeling Netflix doesn’t really have much involvement in the actual storyline and production, they just fund and make sure it works with their brand name/agenda
i think netflix actually wrote and created tall girl, whereas for this movie they let noah and his team work on the movie, and netflix was simply the benefactor that funded them
I like Netflix. They have faith in the people behind these projects and leave them alone. Obviously some movies will suck but as we all know there are a lot of ppl who like shitty movies. So something for everyone.

Great analysis. One last thing he doesn't mention is the very last shot of the scene where we see the entire courtroom full of people. I gasped. That shot pulls us out of the claustrophobia of Nicole and Charlie's relationship and punches home the utter humiliation of having the intimate details of their personal lives put on display for everyone to see, almost cheapening their experience and pain, making it that much more painful. But this shot also gives us a more global perspective: so many more people (of far lesser means, as the judge notes) are also suffering through this agonizing, humiliating process.
i agree, it pulled me out of the moment. it’s when you can tell that life still goes on around them.

Yeah I agree. I've wanted Joaquin to get an Oscar for years now but Joker wasn't his best performance (still really, really great, though). He deserved one way more for The Master or Walk the Line. Between him and Adam Driver, Adam probably had the better performance but they won't give it to him because it's more nuanced and because the Oscars like to give acting awards to award the actor's entire career, rather than just the whole performance. Adam will get his eventually, hopefully!!

Junayed Alam as someone who’s actually in film school, allow me to reassure these videos are significantly more useful than at minimum 75% of what is taught, and I’d say more useful than 90% of what is taught.

So to every person who has ever accused me of over analyzing a movie scene, this is proof positive that there is literally a meaning to everything that is show in a movie. It all has meaning. Even the disposable coffee cups had a significance!
Never let people shame you for analyzing pieces of media. People mainly do that when they themselves didn't notice subtext and feel bad they're not able to see things as "deeply" as others. I was trained in AP English to scrutinize and analyze everything on the page when I was in high school. It's great training for when you create your own art and helps guide what you do and do not want to construct significance around when conveying an idea.

I don’t know if it was intentional, but I felt like Adam and Scarlett did great acting like children almost in this scene. Maybe it’s just the way they are dressed and made up, but they look like two kids being forced to chose a parent in a divorce. Really well done either way

I agree, but up to the extent that they seem like children. Mainly because they are being spoken for, and scolded by the lawyers when they speak out. In this scene both Charlie and Nora lost their voices. They are being spoken for, just like children often are.

Nobody wins? That female main actor in the movie surely won (like most women after divorce), and Charlie certainly lost (Remember that part, in which the lawyer said he also had to pay for her lawyer?)

Jules A She isn't content herself, they BOTH lost. She loved him more & he cheated but he also tried to secure everything else for the family. She wasn't happy with how it played and you know that (at least, that's what you were supposed to learn) when she sees him reading the letter, when they're crying together after fighting, when she finds out her lawyer literally did something she didn't want and asked the opposite for.
They both had losses, that's the point. That divorce is not just about them, sadly, even though it should be, but rather what happens during it and the losses each have before, during and after.
They were different types of losses, but they BOTH lost, different perspectives. If you think she won, you severely missed the point of Noah's movie.
@@Anonymous-ve7piI do not even think that she lost or that, that was the message of the movie: she had more custody, her husband paid part of her lawyer's fees, she got a new good job, she got a new partner, she lives with her family. The guy was sad at the end, while she was smiling and all proud. She never lost anything, she left her husband because she was bored and wanted to take care of her needs without thinking about the person that has been taken care of her.
"He cheated"? Then why didn't confront him directly to solve the issue? She rather reserved it as a tool to force a divorce.
Noah Baumbach seems like the kind of director who considers literally every option before settling on what he thinks is right.
It’s like he’s made a science out of it but it still comes across as totally artistic. Very impressive guy.

I'm not really sure what necessarily makes a screenplay better than another. With Noah's all the dialogue is used verbatim in the film, there's not ad-libs/improvisation. So I would take that as a positive. But then the direction, at least in this scene, seemed very limit. There's not a lot of description on how the scene should go or how the characters should act/react to what goes on. It's left to interpretation and other factors outside of what's written on the page. Personally I think this is great for actors to be able to delve into their roles and be more involved in creating the character we then see on screen. I'm just not sure what academy members will make of it. Will they think a "less is more" approach to stage direction is good for a screenplay? Or will they prefer a screenplay that is more descriptive and shows the level of detail and forethought a writer put into the film prior to preproduction?
I definitely think he's strong for original and Greta for adapted

Fun fact: Noah and Greta Gerwig(the director of Little Women) have been together for 9 years and just had their first child together. So as a couple they were both Oscar nominated for different movies in the same year.
You can uderstand how meticulously written and though-through this script is after Noah reveals a subplot with the judge and the tissues, which most likely will go unnoticed (as it went for me), yet still is put there to give each character its own life. Brilliant writing, directing and acting!
Imagine being cast for such a small role where you'll be saying your lines for 20 seconds or so, and the director tells you that your character is having a cold that particular day.
Every single umm, ahh, pause and overlapping dialogue is written into his scripts. And he makes sure the actors don’t change or miss them at all.
In those moments, stumbling on the stairs, fixing the car seat, they were helping one another and connecting (however subtly) yet those were the exact moments weaponized by the lawyers.

Zoe Jean Louise well I think that subplot can give insight into the judges decision to keep the case as an LA case/an LA family. If the judge had a cold he probably wanted to be done with it so chose to do the easiest thing, even if the argument is strong for them being a NY family

Adam Driver is truly a phenomenal actor
If it weren't for Joker, Adam Driver would be the actor winning all the awards for 2019 movies.
Phoenix was great in Joker but Driver deserved that Oscar, no contest. I wasn’t able to watch the show but I heard Baumbach wasn’t even nominated. These award shows can really be a joke sometimes
Adam deserves the Oscar a lot more than Phoenix. It may be bias, but I just found joker boring. It felt like a movie that had been done multiple times before, but marriage story felt fresh and new.

it’s just plain impressive how much thought goes into every shot. i have so much respect for everyone who helped make this masterpiece. their hard work really shows. such a beautiful movie.
I like the upward camera angle, makes us feel like children watching them unable to stop them for destroying their marriage.

Can I marry this guy? I love filmmakers. The attention to details, the creativity, how smart they are. You sometimes watch a scene and yes it causes an emotional impact in you but you don't realize all the hard work and thought that gets into developing such scenes. He deserved an Oscar nomination for Best direction, for sure.

this was my favorite scene of the movie, it was so heartbreaking and powerful, Ray and Laura truly are powerhouses it was chilling! and so sad, the lack of control of what was being said escalated so fast... it was amazing!
With this perfect directing he still doesn't get nominated in that category? The academy and also a lot of people seems not realizing his directing skill, this film is not just perfectly written but Baumbach also keep every details on point that's why he is a great director. They'll never know the effort he gave until he describe every element of it which is superb.

I think the scene does a good job of exhibiting the hurt and shame and anger that comes out when someone you’ve been vulnerable with turns that vulnerability into a weapon against you. It’s so sad.

God, I love filmmaking. It is such a demanding business, but when all the elements come together and create a beautiful scene, it is magic.
You can tell Noah loves his craft and is a true student of film. I haven't heard anyone reference Dr. Strangelove in forever. One of my favorite old school films.

If you watch Scarlett and Chris evan’s “actor on actor” interview for vanity fair, she reveals that Noah had the actors stick to the exact words on the script. Lots of movies leave room for actors to improvise, but Noah made sure that the actors didn’t miss even a “but” or “and” or a pause in his script.
I wished he'd talked about the lenses he used. One of the most striking things about this scene to me was that when we cut to the judge, it becomes clear that the courtroom is really big, whereas while the scene was still focused on the debate, it seemed like they were on a very small room. It feels very claustrophobic and uncomfortable. I'm guessing he used really long lenses, which shorten distances.

Laura Dern's amazing in this movie.
Her character is so disgusting, that's hard to pull off and yet be 100% believable.

The Lawyers are the true villains in this movie if it ever to be considered to have one. Money leechers & dirty conspirators.
At the same time they are trying to be the 'heros' for those who hired them
It's why I didn't hire a lawyer when I filed for divorce. Thankfully I could still have a conversation with the ex and come to a compromise.
No kidding. I just LOATHED them. I reacted so strongly to them, taking this very painful situation and just grinding salt into the wounds. On the other hand, Charlie and Nicole should never have let it get so out of hand.
Cinematic Experience - The very unique experience human being can only enjoy with camera, lens & screen. And I think Noah perfectly understands and performs it.
I think I’m in love with this beautiful, brilliant and creative genius. Mainly because as a licensed marriage and family therapist...he nailed it. This may be a marriage counseling homework assignment, just a warning shot. Brilliant film! Heart wrenching.

2:10 I really like when Jay's associate cough, it's very little but it make the film flows so naturally, not just lawyer vs lawyer but there's also people sorrounding them, they are human not a prop. I remember the court scene in To Kill a Mockingbird which is good but it lacks human existence, all the people in there doesn't feel alive.

I always got that feeling through the movie, especially the courtroom scene, where the situation went somewhere they didn’t want it to go. Like they see eachother and know that it’s gone too far now because they are hearing the lawyers really rip into the opposite side but they don’t know how to stop it. On one hand there’s moments where maybe they could handle the divorce without lawyers, but then either Charlie or Nicole will say something and then it escalates to an emotional statement and they won’t let it go.

I don’t think he’s unsure of it but it’s possible than many people mispronounce it and he might feel funny about correcting them. I myself assumed it was pronounced “bomb-back”.
It's fascinating listening to a director. I don't know much about the process so to understand the care and attention to detail, the thought that goes into every scene - it's impressive.

thank you for sharing - that courtroom scene was quite remarkable and entertaining. It's interesting that Mr Baumbach wants to convey that the Love is always there between the two people notwithstanding the divorce proceeding and proceedings. Divorce lawyers don't really want the couple to love each other but they're not questioning the absurdity of love and divorce like - why get divorced if you love each other. They need to get paid. That's all they're interested in.
Marriage Story was one of the best pictures I've seen in the past 2 years. Directing was on point and it really gave you the experience of being in the family with them. Adam Driver deserves the Oscar (That singing scene at the end of the movie was great) as does Scarlett (not for JoJo Rabbit though IMO). In 10-20 years, we'll look back at Adam as one of the best actors of our generation.

This might be an outlier take on this, but I like how Noah portrays the dissonance between an event as it happens and how it is told later on on. The scene where Nicole's tipsy was sweet and showed their closeness, but in here it becomes an ammo attacking her. As is the scene where Charlie gets his grant and Nicole is shown to be happy for him, but in here it becomes a point of contention. Just like how in broken relationships, what you think happens vs what it turns out to be are often the cause of disappointments.
P.S. love how Noah drops all the film references, always love to see people so passionate about their work!

He lost. The clown deserved it. He carried a deeply flawed movie ALL BY HIMSELF. Give him credit. Adam flowed so well with all the cast, but all Joaquin had was himself.

I'm obsessed with this movie. I've lost count now, I think I'm at 7x watching it. It is honestly such an incredible film. It is rare that I notice and appreciate the structure of a film that is so often overlooked and fades into the background. Noah's direction was really put forward as a character itself. It was hard to miss some of these really symbolic gems (screenplay, wardrobe, camerawork). He's brilliant.

Now i can see this couple they kind of have the same way of working, one thing common is both Noah and Greta likes to prepare everything before the shooting (every small detail).
