Is this the perfect director? Is this the perfect man?!??
I honestly love The Last Jedi, flaws and all. I can really tell that Rian truly cares about each film he makes. Knives Out was easily my favorite film of last year.
Knives Out is a wonderful film. Rian's hubris with respect to his spin on The Last Jedi outweighed any care he may have had. There is no defense of Last Jedi which is quantified by JJ's efforts to repair it in the last film. There is no perfect director as there is no perfect man.
This guy is such pure class. I love how he directed arguably both the best and the most controversial episodes of Breaking Bad, then went on to write and direct the most controversial Star Wars film, and then he just gracefully shrugged off whatever fan outrage and has just gone on to make more great movies. Class act.
Andreas Nordvall “Controversial” is not the word you’re looking for. F is for family is controversial and great, South Park is controversial and great, TLJ was controversial because it had a lot of plot holes, and that Rian Johnson only wanted to see what he would’ve seen in the film, not the fans
Sir Potatous Headis Limberg well, fans got what they wanted with rise of skywalker. Good timezzz of remembrance that remount to nothing. At least his had a message to deliver.
*spoiler alert* I'm always fascinated by how ambient lighting can really tell you a lot about a person's motivation in a movie. Most everyone is in a well-lit area of the room, and they are diametrically opposed (in position and in lighting) to Ransom whose face is half well-lit and half darkened, symbolizing how he has a two-faced persona; one that he presents to the family, the other hiding his own secrets until the very end while everyone else's are exposed throughout the movie. In this scene the family has basically encircled around him because they need someone to blame and vent their frustrations off of, and Ransom is just that scapegoat that they'll use, and their positioning in this scene really encapsulates that well. Blanc, Marta, and the police officer are positioned off in the back because they're neutrally observing (like the people in the picture frames) and Marta is innocent. None of them are here to place blame, just seeing all of this chaos unfold. And the props are very detailed and deliberate, war-time statues symbolic of how aggressive the family is and what their priorities are.
This movie is a masterpiece and the proof is in the pudding. SO much detail and thought put into every single frame. Talented director who surrounded himself with talented people and made a beast of a movie. Also loved learning that Michael Shannon is hilarious off set and on. :)
Okay, for real though, how was this movie NOT nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Cinematography at the Oscars? Edit: Okay, maybe not Cinematography.

@Joshua Simpson as a filmmaker, he clearly understands how they were made, so if by Research you mean you don't think he watched the other movies, that doesn't make any sense. Its a series of movies, not particle physics. Just because he intepreted the original movies differently doesnt mean he didnt do his research.
It really isn't. It's almost universally loved and got plenty of nods (deservedly). Midsommar is ACTUALLY underrated because it got practically nothing
Is this what film school is like? This was a very thoughtful and fascinating dissection. I learned something today and I’m really excited to watch this movie!
This is the best one of this y'all have ever done. It's legitimately fascinating to hear a director actually talk about the craft and logistics of filmmaking, and the decision making process that happens. More of this, please and thank you.
Seriously, I have to give Ryan Johnson just an immense amount of praise for how he designed this film. He went to such lengths to put in compositional elements that, at the time, I didn't even notice, because I was too busy enjoying the characters. And that just shows how great of a director he is.
He is slowly becoming one of the most interesting modern directors after each new film. You can really see his growth while finding his signature style.
Isaiah Williams I cant believe I used to be like that. I initially wanted to avoid this cause I was a toxic Star Wars fan, but I saw it at an early screening anyways. After I saw it I rewatched TLJ with an open mind and it’s one of my favorites now. Never looking at the internet for my opinions again😁
this breakdown and this movie prove that it pays to have a skilled team at every level, not just the director or writer or cast. The cinematographer, the post production, the production design, the costume design - each level so well thought out but handled by the part of the team proficient in that area comes together to make an incredible movie.
I feel like revealing that Apple secret is more against Apple than other directors. Now they'll have to change that policy or risk no one ever using their products in a movie again. The ball is now in their court.
I think his joke is more that directors will now be frustrated because we, as viewers, know that if they try to make us guess who the surprise villain is, we can eliminate characters as suspects if they're seen with an iPhone
Rob Moden yes, that's the joke. And he may have literally ruined the mystery for movies in the immediate future (if true). But, if what he revealed is Apple's policy, it's a stupid one. Samsung, etc, can now make the product endorsement deals and Apple would lose out. That was a passive-aggressive dig at Apple and its policies.
i'm kind of surprised he would say something like that because i'm sort of assuming he signed a contract with apple which would probably include whether or not he could publicize the details and terms of said contract. i'm pretty sure someone might be held accountable for this in larger ways than just an audience getting spoilers.
Apple and their subtle manipulation of social cues has their followers really believing that they are better people for choosing iPhones and crap like this fuels it.
Zena222 you’re totally missing the beat. It’s a genius branding strategy on Apple’s part. No one associates the brand with the villain. Apple retains their wholesome brand image.
i think rian johnson and knives out is the opposite of auteurship. he is fully aware that filmmaking is a team effort, and actively shouting out every member of the team and bringing out their strengths and letting them play and working with them to benefit the film, instead of having a ruling vision.
will vermillion I love ‘Looper’ and ‘TLJ’; in fact, I would personally rank those above ‘Knives Out’. @@andreaflores7799 I personally loved "Looper", thought "Knives Out" was very good. TLJ is the odd one out for me. The backlash and change of pace forced JJ to use TROS to try and "fix" plot holes created by TLJ. I think he's an excellent director but just didn't fit for Star Wars imo. My mum is a linguist and she also does that thing where when she's talking to someone that has a different accent to hers (Aussie) her accent will change 😂
I've been told many times that my accent is very good when I (an American, with university training) speak Spanish in Mexico. I think it, in some part, comes down to you wanting the people you're speaking with to feel more at ease. If you can mimic your cohort's speech patterns and/or dialect, it can make you feel more familiar and therefore less threatening and more accommodating. It's also very fun to pick up and play with different accents, I won't begrudge anyone that! :)
It happens to most linguists! Once you start studying the moving parts of languages and accents, it's like your brain has learned how to put the square block goes in the square hole, and once you start hearing someone talk, your tongue adjusts in your mouth, and you begin imitating the breathing pattern, and unconsciously, the accent starts coming out of your mouth too!

I've been obsessed with this movie. It has so many layers. It's a donut hole that fits perfectly within a donut of a movie. But Rian takes us further to help us realize that the donut hole at the center is not a donut hole at all but a smaller donut with its own hole.

And the props are very detailed and deliberate, war-time statues symbolic of how aggressive the family is and what their priorities are.

this breakdown and this movie prove that it pays to have a skilled team at every level, not just the director or writer or cast.

And in fact, additional spoiler, the only person who really has a phone is made very notable in the story, and they end up killing them off while all the other characters don't even really have their phones around until it's questioned. Such a small detail that makes me wonder if he did that solely because of this interview lol, that way you would never know who the killer was really
I do that too unintentionally, it's actually kinda embarrassing lol
o o i do it too, and whenever i’m at my scottish friend’s house i end up annoying her a lot haha
