"It's my job to tell the story of what it is. It's the audience's job to have a feeling." That is a remarkably profound comment on the craft of acting.
Very well said
i hadn't had much feeling about the nf movie till i saw the little clip before SJ's interview, and OMG she looks so - 'destroyed' and unlike herself i've known before this role... and sobb... it reminds me of (well at least one, maybe two;0) a breakup i experienced before, and "feeling for the other" ("i don't want her to go thru this")... and, yet, feeling forced for my own self-preservation, "i have to do this"... ;\ i wonder if that's the deepness that this story goes thru. i would (kind of) hope so, if only for the real-ness of such an intense breakup can be for two people.
;0 p.s. although relating also to the 'acting' component that you were responding to... there is that too; having just a bare-minimal amount of acting-exp too... but here, thinking of that little clip i saw, made me think even more personally about what this flick must be like... 'a good (bad) one'! ;) and here, i'd been thinking this must be like a modern 'the graduate'... ;) that it was maybe made like, 'something kewl, but with just a little twist at the end'... this looks a lot more intense and drawn-out. (i wonder if adam ends up looking as destroyed as scarlett! ;)
lol
Maggy Spielman indeed and it was first said by David Bowie 🥰
It shows how great he is
Me , watches a movie.5 minutes later, binge watched every interview about movie on UA-cam.
Geez I thought I was the only one!
Thought i was weird for doing that.
Same 🤷🏻♀️
Haha me too!
Me too. Me too.
he is handsome in a non "Hollywood" way and I love that about him
So many people are.
inside speachless Agreed. I’ve always thought he is so handsome.
I love smart and articulate men.
yeah hes kinda ugly and kinda not at the same time, i think him being tall and kinda buff helps
@@SuperKing604 I think it's charisma. I find his look odd and unconventional and even his voice is strange. But when he turns on the charisma in a role, I find him super attractive. Some people are like that...for me it was the same with Chris Pine. The first time I saw him on screen I was like um...what? And within minutes I was like...hey who's this hottie?
Is it just me that's not over that huge fight scene he had with scarlett in the film? that was some incredible acting from them both👏wow.
NOT JUST YOU
Omg it's burned in my heart!
It’s unbelievably good. I’ve watched it maybe 10 times since I first saw it last night, and I can’t help but get teary eyed each time.
@@alvi5331 yesss👏
@@MySublimePoet07 it was so powerful...
Stephen gave much more depth to this interview because he saw the movie. I think he should see more movies before interviews. It makes things very insightful.
But so many movies are bad and he is so busy.
You need to find the time to go to NY premières, him or his writers. Although you might argue that he does so little during day time, except rehearsing at the end of the day...
@@JDPhyx I suppose you're joking, but if not, you need to watch the clip in which he takes us through his typical day (it's in an interview of him done for... I don't remember right now but it's easy to find). The man never stops.
@Charles Uwakwe Well, he does make that point himself at the beginning of the interview...
I agree, but also because Adam Driver insists on honest communication, I think--I find him really genuine.
this movie was so moving, scarlett and him deserve so much recognition
I hated this movie because Nicole was such a bitch. And these two New Yorkers don't know how to hire lawyers to complete a divorce? There was absolutely NOTHING realistic about this.
Cyn Y
Yeah I’m a bit apprehensive to watch. I feel like it would be super annoying to say the least
Lily Smith no no it’s a very naturalistic love story told through a divorce it’s very well acted and written. Treat yourself to this movie it’s really good
Anita Mann
Not my type of movie . I’ll pass lol
@@cyny6305 You hated a movie because a character was flawed.... Ding ding ding, five points to griffin-door
stephen is so invested in the movie, bless him. and adam knows what the hell he is talking about too, what a great interview.
My impression and of course I could be extremely wrong...This movie really and profoundly spoke to SC. I have been a fan of SC since The Daily Show then full run of The Report...never seen him so personally invested in the subject matter of a non Lord of the Rings film before. Some of the questions asked seemed more geared to the actual character instead of his portrayer to me. I could be wrong
Marriage Story is seriously one of my favorite films of 2019, and I said it before and I’ll say it again: Adam Driver is one of the best actors of his generation and he NEEDS to get recognized more for it. Come through Academy~ 👏🏼
This sold me on it. I have to see it now.
Akila Smith YES! Such a masterful and a perfectly human film. Made me cry, haha~ :’) Let me know what you think!
Who cares about the Academy?! Greatness is not measured by winning that award.
TimeIdle True but it’s still nice to see an actor or movie we appreciated being recognized for its hard work.
That said the oscars are not the only award show in the world. The Spirit Awards Just nominated movies such as Marriage Story, The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems for a number of categories. There’s nothing wrong in being excited about it.
I also enjoy the oscars’s existence in the way that I can laugh about it while watching YMS live reactions of it so...
Win/Win scenario.
@@Victor-qx3vx My thoughts exactly. Thanks for articulating it! Couldn't find the words myself haha~
after the marriage story, my officemate and i agreed that adam driver isn’t particularly handsome at first glance or maybe in static media even, but he becomes beautiful once he starts moving. Like you know how some people become how they move and act and speak? That’s how it is
Like Benedict Cumberbatch
Anna MacMenamie yeah! I mean he’s kinda an asshole, so i say that begrudgingly, but i do agree!
safetypinforkeeps YES!!!!!
Right when he took his helmet off in Force Awakens, in the theater my dad leaned over and whispered something about he looked more attractive with his helmet on 😂
But yeah. A person’s personality makes them beautiful or unattractive in my eyes
Nah he’s handsome at first glance.
@@safetypinforkeeps may I ask how he's an *sshole?
now THIS is a conversation.
so refreshing to see a late show interview without the audience woo-hooing/laughing/clapping every 2 seconds and actually letting the guest talk
Exactly
Roxanne Aminou its a nice change
Roxanne Aminou actually a decent interview
They fear the power of the Force
Weird observation but I love that can you see Adam Driver listening. He just looks so attentive here.
Me too
How articulate and thoughtful is adam driver? Excellent interview.
Ramon Solorio God,he’s amazing in this way! 😩
*THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE*
I really hated the character "Kylo Ren", and not because he was an aspiring Sith, but because I found him dull, shallow, meh.... as a movie-character in the first place.
But Adam Driver seems like a really great guy; he deserved MUCH better than Kylo.
@@MistedMind Kylo Ren is misunderstood. Just watch Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base.
AL- BOT YES.
You don't know Kylo until you Matt. 😂
not enough to beat rey in every confrontation.
@@MistedMind I disagree, I think Ren is one of if the the most complex star wars villain ever
We need Matt the Radar Technician standalone movie
yoga asix AHAHAHA YESSS
yes!!
Omg finally someone got the point😂😂😂😂
"I haven't had my muffin yet."
“Dude Matt straight up sucks”
“You’re more open now because you’re aware that you’ve lost something.” So true
He looks so serious about his work, very intelligent, but also a somewhat decent guy! I respect that
somewhat? lol
Adam driver is honestly one of the most intelligent actors working today and when he gets genuinely good questions hes so good at answering.
He is the picture of professional. A former Marine. "My job is not to feel, my job is to tell the story of the script."
So boss.
He's gonna get a goddamn Oscar for this movie.
Joaquin Phoenix is in the lead
He is and he deserves it.
man idk, I think Joaquin deserves it this time, he's been deserving it since Gladiator...
I mean I’m judging by performances. I saw both Joker and Marriage Story and imo Adam deserves it way more and I really can see him winning.
i dont think a nexflix movie that is not in the theater can get an oscar
His answer to Stephen's question about using his own marriage as inspiration was very sobering and honest. I like that he didnt do a "well my wife would kill me if I did such and such," meme for an easy laugh.
For the record: it's Adam's 36th birthday today 🎂🥂
@kotur28 Scorp Rockss hehe.
Wow! He looks a lot younger than that
Stephen actually listens to his guests. Nice. Top interviewer. I love that he also loves Adam and Scarlett, together and separately, great.
he is literally so articulate it’s amazing
Adam Driver's performance in this movie is Oscar Worthy. This movie is well written, it has great acting, it's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
He is incredible in Marriage Story. Honestly my favourite film of the year and favourite performance of the year!!!
Wow! Now I really want to see it! I like him, not the biggest Scarlett fan, but the clip was good and Stephen is gushing!
Yep mine too love him
I want to go watch it but I'm scared of the feelings hahaha
Joaquin in Joker is my favorite.
FANIMATOR the fuck does that have to do with anything, troll?
“My relationship to it is immaterial.” What a mature and professional (and yet deep) answer. Love this man and his dedication to the craft.
This is an award winning movie. The whole cast nailed it. The writers nailed it, the cinematographers, and editors nailed it.
This was a good interview. I like it when people can get Adam really talking and when interviewers can ask really deep questions. It's good Stephen was able to watch this movie before Adam came on. I hope he'll be able to do that more often
I love Mr.Drivers voice
He should do audiobooks.
@@starlinguk I wonder if he would ever do the voice of a character?
@@starlinguk I'd definitely buy those books.
Adam has grown so much as an actor, and has incorporated so much diversity in the roles he plays. I wish him all the best and hope he has a long and successful acting career!
What a penetrating interview. Stephen-the gift that keeps on giving.
Kudos to Mr. Driver though.
He was just half of the interview. Mr. Driver I would posit contributed in equal measure to the rewarding outcome
"Penetrating"..lol
Adam Driver is so well spoken, hats off to him
I had never seen this guy on anything until I saw him yesterday on Star Wars and today on marriage story. I was very impressed by his performances because he is so natural. It doesnt feel like acting at all
I'd highly recommend 'the report'. He's the main character in it too and it's really good
@@quitebad459 3 years late but watched it yesterday because of your comment. Great flick! It felt so real, the way everybody acted.
The band playing Hey Jude as he came on, a song written for a child of divorce
Different Beatles tune.
Dude that’s Let It Be
@@CourierNewVegas if you read the replies, you'd know that I had realised that :)
@CHI-TownYankee well I was wrong so I guess you are too?
To me it sounded like the bridge of I'm Looking Through You
"Why, tell me why did you not treat me right
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight"
Star Wars is huge but this is the movie he'll be remembered for
You should check out "BlacKkKlansman" and "Frances Ha", he used his talent well there as well.
imagine watching a movie, then talking to one of the LEAD ACTORS in it. a dream job, if u ask me..
That scene when he starts to sing, ... I could feel my heart melting..!! He is beyond talented..
Adam and Stephen together are a gift to human kind. Happy B-Day Adam!!!!!
Stephen was so passionate about this movie and it shows. I love that he asked super interesting questions
Wow. The intelligence in that conversation even took Colbert by surprise. I wish both a long healthy and happy life.
I love how deep he is and how emotional and invested he gets into every role he plays. He’s my most favourite actor.
He is the example that being masculine and confident is was makes a man attractive.
MakeupByCovi dude he’s so hot and his voice is so perfect
Masculine and confident without being arrogant is what adds to his charm.
@Cyrxn ikr
Stephen Cobert? Agreed!
Stop projecting lmao
I like how this interview was actually about something of substance rather than jokes
“I knew when you threw me across the room”
“I knew when you said ‘Hi, I’m Matt’”
I loved that skit! Lol !
"I haven't had my muffin yet, Matt!"
He is an incredible actor. He nails Kylo, but he is so.much more in his range.
I've never been a huge fan of Colbert, but this is a fantastic interview, a conversation, which all good interviews should feel like. They both have such a clear investment in this movie and the story that it is telling.
Colbert even almost went without mentioning Star Wars, which I would imagine Driver gets asked about constantly, so it's refreshing to see.
Adam Driver is such a unique actor and individual. He seriously deserves more recognition.
He has such expressive eyes....such a good actor. Can't wait to see this movie!
SO articulate in the way he describes this movie. INterested in seeing this movie now
Saw it in theatres and its literally my top 5 favourite movies of the year and I do not even give out my top 10 favourites till December 31st. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in this film are the reason why they are two of the best actors in the last 15 years.
he’s so charming 👀
jake gyllenhaal and adam driver: two of the best actors of their generation and two of the most underrated actors...
they're my two favorite actors and they deserve more recognition for their abilities, how hard they work, their passion for the craft, and for how insightful and connected they are to every character they play.
Adam Driver has gotten so much more comfortable with interviews. When he first started he was so nervous. So cool to see him grow in his career. Great actor!
"It's not for me to get the feeling, it's for the audience to get the story" - Adam Driver
I just love Adam...everything about him. His depth of heart that is shown through his great mind!
He’s so smart and articulate. I’ve only seen Adam in a few films but I think he’s an incredible actor. I can’t wait to see more of him, he played this role of Charlie so darn well. 👏
I just watched the movie and it's heart breaking. The pain of separation and everything.
He has such interesting things to say about the craft of acting.
This interview was thoroughly engaging. I almost didn't want it to end.
By the end of Season 1of Girls, I told my bf "This guy is gonna be huge, like a serious big time actor". Love this man's work.
No words to to explain how good this movie is! It’s actually pretty scary how real it is.
He deserves an Oscar, I loved so much and cried in that scene he and Scarlett fight each other.
I love the sound of Adam Driver's voice. What a hunk....
Adam Driver definitely deserves all the recognition he's getting and I think he will have a very successful career. Wonderful man and actor!
He was absolutely amazing in this movie. I cried my eyes out. Such a beautiful story.
Beautiful man and human...great actor..i love his sacrifiing characters he always plays.
His jawline is so vertical it's crazy. He's got such a unique look
one of the best interviews i've seen in a loooooong time. so glad i've clicked on this video! congratulations stephen!
Adam The best actor of his generation, I love every movie of him
I ♥️Adam Driver!!!
Good to see abraham h parnassus is doing well
This is the origin story...
he crushed his enemies sooo
💀😂
😂😂😂
This interview was great! Truly in-depth and insightful, one of the only interviews where like the audiences really listened, very few laughs (in a good way)
5:19
the smile he gets when asked about joanne,, effervescent
I can’t help myself when he started talking, his voice so deep like my love to him, his beautiful face, his height is always ugh! And I’m asking myself when can I find the man like him I mean ‘husband’
It’s hard to not adore the interaction between both these wonderful men. 😊
Why Adam looks so confused when Stephen is gushing at him lol
Just watched this movie today. He is incredible in this movie, and even sings toward the end. If he doesn't win the Oscar, I'll be shocked. Amazing actor.
Happy Birthday to "one of the finest, if not the finest, of his generation" (Martin Scorsese), Adam Driver!
This is such a typically thoughtful interview from Adam and from Stephen.
This is an amazing interview, so deep and entertaining. I could watch an hour of Stephen and Adam talking about this film
This movie was such a treat to watch. It hit so close to home. I watched it three days ago and I still feel its grip. Might watch it again soon. So much to unravel. Bless the screenplay writers.
Adam Driver's performance in this movie is majestic!
Man, what a talent. I love his interviews because he’s so articulate and charming!
As soon as i heard he’d be singing Being Alive in MS i listened to the song on loop for weeks. Then when i finally heard him sing it so beautifully in one take i cried. With the context of what Charlie went through with the divorce it was so much heavier than i anticipated.
There's this one scene where I tell myself I'm not going to cry..then I see his eyes and I lose it everytime. I watched this movie 2x on my first view I had to go back an relive these performances again. Instant classic.
He seems to be a very serious, focused guy. So talented.
My boyfriend and I watched this last night together. We split on the two perspectives of the film, but it made us appreciate our relationship and our willingness to resolve.
Amazing cinematography! Amazing acting! Great writing! It was a pleasure to watch!!
This is why I love Stephen!! he always gets deeper with the interviews than most of the other talk show hosts!
Adam Driver is just one of the best actors working today. I love watching him work.
He looks like an incredibly versatile actor and looking forward to seeing a lot more of him over the years to come.
YES!!!
He is incredible in Marriage Story. If you have a theatre nearby that's screening it, go see it. I feel like it's one of those movies that is best absorbed when you're not distracted by other things (there are so many subtle moments that you could totally miss watching at home).
Also, I'm surprised Stephen didn't talk to him about his rendition of 'Being Alive', considering how much of a Sondheim fan he is :(
This is such a nice, sophisticated and insightful interview! Would love to see more of this kind of conversation going on! Both on television and in general!
this interview seems more like a deep dive that is normally added in the dvd of the movie. felt that because lf the depth and seriousness of the interview i shouldn't be watching it but that i felt grateful?
it so cool because i have never seen stephen lile this
I like his down to earth attitude. And I like that he is a deep thinker. You don't get to see that in Hollywood actors that often.
Actually one of the most serious talks I have ever seen in Stephen's show!
Very insightful man who knows his craft. Tell the story and let the audience have their feelings.
Just watched the movie and it is one of my favourite from this year. Magnificent story about love, that is complex, and says very real things about men, women, and relationships. Wow.
Adam is such an interesting person! I could listen to him talk all day
I really love his point about it is not his job to express emotions for the audience. It is the audience's job to feel - if he is successful as an actor.
Love him in this movie . Multiple of emotions ! He portrays the character so well , looks natural
I loved the movie. Best movie of 2019. 2019 had a lot of big movies but this, this did something to me. I loved it. It awakened something in me. I was happy, sad, irritated, angry, all of these feelings awakened in me when watching this. And when a movie brings out so many feelings out of me, it has earned my respect.
