Justin Fields has been the starter for Ohio State over the past two years. It seems like based on where he went to college, everybody has already written him off. People see he’s a Buckeye, they see the quarterbacks that came out before him like Dwayne Haskins and Cardale Jones, and they somehow attribute those players’ lack of success as a direct reason why Fields won’t be good in the NFL. While I think that’s a ridiculous premise, in this video we’re going to look at exactly what makes him a top tier prospect. If I was running an NFL team, I would have no problem spending a top 5 pick on Justin Fields in the upcoming NFL Draft.
In this video scouting report, I discussed his accuracy, toughness, and how he takes coaching. I also discussed areas where Justin Fields needs to improve. Most notably, those areas are pocket awareness, anticipation, and a tendency to play hero ball.
Pro Comparison: RG3 - Yes, I know this will probably anger A LOT of people, but the play styles are remarkably similar. Both were very accurate coming out college. Both are very athletic and can create plays with their legs. Both have great arms. Both have a problem with pocket awareness where they stand like statues in the pocket, and both have a tendency to play hero ball at times. Note: I am NOT saying that Justin Fields will bust like RG3. What I am saying is that their play styles are similar enough that I make the connection and I REALLY hope that Fields can improve on his weaknesses as they could make or break him in the NFL. Regardless, his upside is the reason why I have no problem spending an early first rounder on him.
My NFL Draft Grade: I gave Fields an early first round grade. I think he's well worth one of the top picks in the NFL Draft and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he went #3 overall to the San Francisco 49ers.

How did Mahomes look in the Superbowl when his offensive line couldn't hold him up? Any QB would look bad, so don't put that all on him. Wilson had one good year and was horrible last year; 11 Tds to 9 interceptions and now he's all of a sudden jumped ahead of Justin Fields and Fields even outplayed Trevor Lawrence twice head to head (3 times if you count the Elite 11 coming out of high school).

I still feel like people are arguing more about Justin Field's school and not his ability. Do me a favor: Name a BYU, North Dakota State, or Alabama QB that has had success in the NFL over the last 10 years? Does this mean we should only draft Trevor Lawrence because Deshaun Watson was successful? Before Watson, what Clemson QB was successful in the previous 10 years before him? Why did Watson succeed when no QB was great at Clemson before him? My point is simple: Scout the player, not the school.

I'm very happy for all of the doubters and rumors and such. No way in hell the Bears could have scored such a beast of talent unless this all played out. The kicker is now this uber athletic QB will play with a chip on his shoulder for all the teams that passed on him. We all know this is very powerful for competitive athletes. Nobody will be doubting Fields anymore come December when it is clear he will guide the Bears to a division win and contending for NFL rookie of the year.

@@DanielHerd All of that is part of the evaluation and has nothing to do with the school but the tape that is on the film. I'm talking about people who say "oh it's an Ohio St QB" that's not a legitimate evaluation. Also playing with talent doesn't mean you wont pan out. Deshaun Watson played with all types of talent at Clemson. He's panning out (besides off field stuff lol). Kyler Maury was throwing to wide open receivers all day at Oklahoma. So was Baker Mayfield. Zach Wilson bout to get drafted after playing a bunch of nobodies all year. None of this stuff matters. Evaluate the tape. With Haskins my concern for him was I never really saw a lot of big time throws. That should have been a red flag. He could make them in practice i'm sure but his film at Ohio St was lacking a lot of big time throws you see from others. Some thought it was just the offense but in the NFL it was the same thing. He outplayed Lawrence BOTH times he played him. He is a coachable player, he is a great leader, he is tough, he adapts quickly, and he is extremely accurate on deep balls. Also Lawerence was fooled by literally the same scheme in several different games this year, no concern about him learning the game. I’m not being a Fields defender i think he needs room to grow like all of them. But call em all evenly. The only person we don’t have negative tape on is Mac Jones outside of the fact he can’t really make too many plays off schedule. Ohio State was missing three of its starting O-Line man for much of the season so Fields didn't have the protection necessary to move onto the 2nd or 3rd options at times. If you have Trent Williams protecting his blindside, Alex Mack protecting up the middle, and a bunch of solid O- Lineman protecting him in San Francisco Fields will do Mahomes-esque things.
Fields has the talent and he will be stepping into a stacked offense. George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and a dangerous run game led by Mostert and Wilson will give Fields so many options. Not to mention the 49ers will probably pick up a player like Rondale Moore at WR and Tommy Tremble or Brevin Jordan at Tight End to give Fields more weapons. Moore will give Fields his deep threat and Tremble along with Kittle will take turns in being an extra Lineman and receiving option.
Fields with Kyle Shanahan could win a Superbowl.

Fields is gonna be the Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Prescott, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson who were the raw talents and under developed in college yet had ridiculous traits in the draft class, he is gonna be drafted by the Panthers because everyone will talk themselves out of him because he wasn’t coached on an NFL level but was an uber talent who showed enough flashes to be considered an early first rounder.
Fields culmination was the Clemson Game, all eyes were on him, after he showed all of his flaws against Indiana then the team was rattled by covid issues so they only played one regular season game against MSU where he managed the game without his starting line, defense was missing pieces as well, so he wins the game with 102 rushing yards with zero turnovers. The team played a total of 3 games from Nov 21-Dec 19. There isn’t any chemistry, covid ran amuck through them and their scheduled opponents. Northwestern he struggled because of layoff, they were missing olave, and the offensive line was still in shambles because of covid. they win the game because of the plus one running game that he helps establish along with trey sermon.
So now he is on the national stage, clemson vs ohio st. Trevor Lawerence on the other sideline, his team was the underdog btw. He goes out there and displays everything he was ridiculed and rightfully criticized for, he shows poised in the pocket, he actually navigated the pocket well, hence the 60 yard touchdown pass to Olave, threw with anticipation, was deadly accurate all night, took the shot, and diced clemson with his arm and delivered them a 385 yards 6 touchdowns combo with a national title appearance on the side.
National Title game team was under siege by the coaching and talent mismatch, but he still showed that growth and maturity in his play. not to even mention the 3 game start when the team was completely in sync and had more touchdowns than incompletions in that 3 game stretch.

I think Fields has bad pocket awareness, but more so tends to trust his line. There are so many time when the pocket is collapsing and hangs in there and delivers a great pass. There are time when a free runner is barreling down on him and he gets out of there at the last second. I like the fact that he keeps his eyes down field at all times.

@Robert The Hunter Fields is a great prospect, but he has some clear weaknesses. They have been discussed a lot. I think the main one is his "hitch" or what I call an over exaggerated wind up. Watch teh videos, he takes his right arm way back before he comes forward I've been watching his mechanics for 2 years, every game. His brilliant throws come when he has time to wind up, He won't get those opportunities in teh NFL. So, his challenge is to get the same zip on teh ball with a quicker release/ less exaggerated wind up.

    • @Chasstful
      @Chasstful 3 роки тому

@Robert The Hunter I didn't say he has bad mechanics, his mechanics are excellent, but he has to speed up his throwing motion and get a quicker release. Quick releases is one of teh things that separates good NFL QBs and wash outs. Several analysts have discussed this, Chris Simms broke this down really well, you can find his analysis on NBC sports videos

The most hilarious thing about the “he is from this school so that’s how he will turn out thing” is that Joe Burrow is an OSU qb and much more so than Fields who originally went to uga. Fields issues seem to be similar to the ones that people had about Justin Herbert, but Herbert came out and wrecked the league last year. I’m not sure if comparisons are fair these days, because the athleticism has gone up for qbs over the years but their skills have as well. With all of these top guys other than Lance I think their tape of just passing alone would be enough to still be day 1 or 2 talent at the position. Cause if we are gonna be honest all of fields best plays have been passes.

While you’re doing your wrap up commentary it’s kind of ironic that he’s moving around in the pocket to buy time left and right. I think at times he thought his guy had the block then completely whiffs the block then sack. That happened a lot at Ohio state. Yes his hero ball game against Indiana was weird. But compared to every other game he played that was an outlier. Zach Wilson and Lawrence also struggle when their blocking isn’t elite. Hell Zach Wilson’s best year was this year when his line was better than everyone else’s. Also look at CC the only team to really get to him and you see a lot of his bad throwing tendencies from 2019. I hate that Fields has 2 rough games and those are his defining games and every other QB those are treated as anomalies. When they had similar or higher frequency of bad plays.

Sam I’m a big fan of yours and think you’re spot on most of the time. RG3 though? I can’t see it my brother.
Fields reminds me of a slightly less mobile/physically dominate Cam Newton with better accuracy and poise in the pocket. Fields work ethic and leadership is why he’ll be great. The man brought Big 10 football back this year.(don’t tell President Trump that though lol)
Also, I think it’s absurd for people to have Wilson, Lance, and Max Jones ranked above Fields. Then again, it’s a Blessing and a Curse. Fields may fall in the draft but he’ll be going to a better team than most of the other QBs. If Fields lands with the Panthers, WFT, Bears, or Patriots, THEN ITS A WRAP! I think he’ll be contending for ROY with whatever QB the 49ers draft(bc of Shanahan IF he starts his rookie QB to begin with)
Keep up the great work Sam but I couldn’t let this one slide my boy. 🤣

It is pretty much 50/50 with these quarterbacks. I think it comes down to processing speed. If processing speed is lacking, it seems to manifest itself in holding the ball too long, lack of pocket awareness due to being glued downfield, locking in on one receiver, and a lack of accuracy as a result of rushing. If the processing is there, accuracy and quick release come next. How fast a guy is or how strong his arm is are way down the list for me. I wonder how many years it will take to know if Fields is the guy.

Covid was a big factor for several of those very games you highlighted where many OSU starting players weren't able to play. Fields obviously has things he can improve on, however, him keeping his eyes down field going through his progressions, and trusting the OL and scheme. It shows his upside, toughness, and process. Again, he has things to fix, but, you are not factoring In a lot of things that contributed to your "weaknesses" for, Fields.

Ohio State typically recruits better than their counterparts (Penn St and Michigan) Also unlike the SEC, the Big 10 isn't littered with powerhouses (see Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Auburn, South Carolina) so OSU qbs enjoy having a roster thats usually vastly superior to the teams they're playing. While maybe its unfair to compare him to previous buckeye qbs, there simply hasn't been ONE to come from there and be successful at the next level.

You show his highlights and I see a collage setup, which make an evaluation of how he will play in the NFL hard. He sets his feet and other than an outlet target 10 yards away he is throwing in the direction of that setup period. You see him scramble and he is still looking in that direction, he knows anything he throws at that point beyond 10 or 15 yards is likely a jump ball and he runs a lot for that reason. It is not an uncommon problem in collage, draw a line through the feet on the initial setup and you have the general direction of the throw, coaches layer patterns in that direction because they are trying to give him multiple options. At his worst he is inaccurate, I think that comes when he loses focus on the target area and comes back to it for a moment them throws, a moment instead of seconds of pre-throw focus is a majors problem. Show me every play where he sets up, gets knocked off that setup, and eventually throws the ball more than 10 or 15 yards to some outlet, how does he look, what are his numbers.
