  • Trey Lance might be the draft’s most talented quarterback, but he’s also the riskiest.
Is Trevor Lawrence worth the 1st pick?: • WHY Urban Meyer is Ris...
This week’s film breakdown I am joined by Kurt Warner to analyze North Dakota State Quarterback Trey Lance. Lance is a projected top 10 pick, and it’s obvious when watching him why. But, while he might be the most physically talented quarterback in the draft, he has many red flags that could become major issues in the NFL. Is he worth the risk? This episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze North Dakota State Quarterback Trey Lance.

Thanks TC21!! Yeah man, it was thrilling no doubt. What I worry about with Lance is he gets drafted into the Shanahan system with the 49ers or Falcons. Have to watch this one again now that the 49ers have selected him. I'm a little indifferent about the selection. I wanted Justin Fields, but Trey Lance I guess would have been the second choice. I'm really concerned in regards to what people are saying about his accuracy issues, but I guess Shanahan saw something where he believed he can either fix, or mitigate in that arena. Lance definitely has the potential to be a really good player though, and the Shanahan offense will definitely evolve with him behind center. I do pray he can make that transition to where he can be a quality pocket passer at the next level. Crazy that he's only 20. Steve McNair, who I believe was the last FCS quarterback to go that high at 3rd overall in 1995 made it happen. Perhaps Lance can as well.

I zeroed in on the same issues - processing complex defensive looks and accuracy off that. Especially on any boot looks. In Kyle's offense its very basic throws but it has to be thrown quickly like we see fits Jimmy Gs skill set. He usually makes the right reads and is on schedule with the throws. Lance will need time to develop that same beat and brain to excel in Kyle's scheme.

We mustn't forget how far off Alex's evaluation of Justin Herbert was. It's almost impossible to tell how inconsistency as a trait translates to the NFL. You can find misses to the bubble for any QB, so that film really doesn't mean much to me. Technique can be corrected on the next level, while physical traits are much harder to address later on. Additionally, it really doesn't hurt to miss on a QB in the draft. Darnold and Rosen, 3rd and 10th overall in '18, both didn't work out at their first teams but were traded for decent compensation, leaving their respective orgs in a position to throw another dart.

Holly cow! Woke up this morning made my self some oatmeal, coffee and mirrored this episode on my 70 inch tv. Great video! One of my favorites so far. Speaking for my 49ers, I don't have patience and can't wait for this kid to develop! Niners are made to win now so we need a more ready QB like Fields or Wilson.

I think the success of Trey Lance is going to depend on the team he gets drafted to. I don't think he got the proper coaching at the school he went to. He has an elite skill set, but he needs the right organization and coaching staff to get him there. Imagine if the 49s took him, or the Patriots. As a Lions fan I hope they draft him at 7. Anthony Lynn helped mold Herbert, let him do that to Lance too.

I have a question. Is there any chance Trey Lance’s struggles with accuracy and inconsistency were the result of bad mechanics / footwork issues? I read that Trey Lance worked with QB coach John Beck and that they were able to identify and fix a few problems in his mechanics/footwork, and that fixing those issues would help sure up his accuracy. Is that true, or is that just an over simplification to be like (1) Trey was inaccurate because of this issue (2) This issue is fixed (3) Now he’s more accurate?
Or can fixing / tweaking a few small things with his mechanics really help improve his accuracy issues?
Disclaimer : Despite the fact that I’m a big football / 49ers fan, I have absolutely zero ability breakdown / analyze a QB. So this might be a stupid question.

I believe it is Zach Wilson. Everything about Wilson is so much hype of his skills which reminds me of past media hype QBs ( saying no names). So far the Jets giving Wilson his College playbook to use in pre season ( BYU s plays involved Wilson to avoid any hit) and understand reasons to get him ready to take on a full season. Yeah, many Wilson fans trolling me but Ive seen this script before of past 4 decades of watching, coaching , playing ect of these type of media hype QBs. Im not saying he has no skills because its there. Its just we havnt seen enough situations of him getting back on his feet to get the next big play. It is the issue of how he will handle those situations once everything is said and done. Trevor Lawrence play of pre season shows he is trying too much to read every read to make his choice on targets but he will be fine as long as the HC convinces him to be more like Zach and take easy plays first as he already gotten up plenty of times of his College Airtime showings. If you want to troll me, just let it be and wait later to prove me wrong.. Said this of Tua over JHerbert of a bigger risk last year...

I just can't believe the Niners passed on Fields to take THIS big of a risk. They just staked it all, not just HC and GM, but the careers of all their starters...Peaks like George Kittle's of being among the top 5 or 10 in the league are only 4 years long. Witness JJWatt's wasted peak 2013-15 made less meaningful due to Matt Shaub's implosion, then years of Hoyer, Mallet, Osweiller. 2018 his final year of being totally unblockable Watson's there and by then....the OL collapsed.
