I love garlic scapes. I think it is so cool that garlic has more than one use. I heard someone say earlier this year that they're not so sure it's true that removing the scapes makes bigger bulbs. It makes sense to me that removing them does redirect the energy of the plant towards the bulb and not the flower shoot. But I was curious, so I let some shapes grow to flowering and then some. I never did post that video...🤔 What I discovered was mixed results. Some bulbs with a flower stalk were smaller than their neighbors while a few others were roughly the same size. Trouble is I got my varieties mixed up so it wasn't a "proper" experiment in that I wasn't able to say here's X garlic with a flower and X without. And then my tomatoes took over the bed and I forgot about some of the garlic....But again, I had mixed results and they were all nice. I will most likely pick my garlic sooner next year. I've heard to wait until there's only 4 or 5 leaves left and that the leaves represent the layers left on the garlic. That does make sense because those I left in the ground way too long had little to no "skin" on them. Thanks for sharing! 🙋♀
That is super interesting and would’ve been great to know the different varieties and how well they did due to leaving garlic scapes on or off. Maybe you can try the experiment next year! Always love learning I’ve just always been told to remove them and so I do, although I did allow one to grow and go to seed and I collected those seeds as I plan to try to start garlic from seed just for experience purposes.
My scape's are just starting to show.
Wonderful!
