Thank you! Now I know to keep an eye out for the balbules(sp?) so that I can grab more seeds for myself. I have been trying to grow garlic, for the scapes really, down here in northern Virginia. My GF is originally from Maine, and she didn't know how to do this; not the everyone does gardening anyway. Great video!
You can cut the scapes much lower than that. As close to the base as possible. Scapes are delicious and can be used just the way garlic is used plus all the other ways you mentioned.
Thank you ! I have always wondered when the best time time harvest. Obviously , scapes are #1 to harvest before the go full bloom absorbing much of the bulb below.
You’re missing the best part by not cutting the scape stem farther down. The tender parts of the stem along with the head is wonderful. Also, elephant garlic also has a scape but its thicker and straight and also is absolutely fantastic to eat. Its really a double crop from one plant and out on the west coast they are becoming so popular with restaurants its hard to find them. Only a few stores in Portland Oregon have them though i hear you can find some at farmers markets.
Hello & Greetings from Down Under 🦘 Fantastic information, just what I needed to know. Thanking you very much. Heading off now to give my Garlic a hair cut lol,, Chop chop. Cheers 🤜🏻🤛🏻🕶👍🏻
My organic CSA farmers give us the whole long stalks. We use the stalk in cooking. Have never used it above the white part. Stores in fridge for months, slice for garlic flavoring in sautéed, soups, casseroles.
1st time growing garlic bulbils...please provide me with more information about these. I did not remove the scapes...is that bad for the garlic bulbs? what do I do next time break off the scapes and that way they will not produce the bulbils? Thank You!
You leave the leaves and watch for them to start to brown and when no more than half of them are brown, harvest. Each leaf is a wrapper on the bulb and as they brown and deteriorate it's one less wrap on the bulb and it begins to lose its flavor.
Thank you, I'm a first timer. I'm sick of having to buy food from PRC, who knows what they put on their crops. So far my raised bed crop looks good, six months from harvest.
What about the leaves? Are they part of the “scape,” or are the stems with a bulbous the only “scape?” I’ve been chopping them up like green onions and adding to dishes and marinades.
Better to pull the out directly and they'll pop out much deeper where the scapes flesh is much softer. Bit of a knack but watch how the commercial harvesters do it!
California? Ask us what our lobster prices are compared to the rest of the country. Here in Maine we have a short growing season and not as much farm land.

Good to know, thank you!
How long after the scapes appear are the garlic ready to harvest, on average?
Thank you! I'm growing a garlic clove right now. I planted it probably a couple of weeks ago.

Good video. Helps give me the feeling that there is some hope for academia yet.
Those scapes are good food!
Is it advisable to cut of the leaves in the garlic plant? Will it also make the garlic bulb grow larger?
No.
How much of the leaves do you cut?
You leave the leaves and watch for them to start to brown and when no more than half of them are brown, harvest. Each leaf is a wrapper on the bulb and as they brown and deteriorate it's one less wrap on the bulb and it begins to lose its flavor.
The most edible and tender part of the scape is the part BELOW the bulbil, not above. It can be used in so many recipes.
Thank you, I'm a first timer. I'm sick of having to buy food from PRC, who knows what they put on their crops. So far my raised bed crop looks good, six months from harvest.
I don't understand if you let it flower it drops its seeds and then you have weeds.
Would not you have germination of garlic plant ?
It would take two to three years before you could harvest them.
They would be small bulbs.
Great Video. Thank you- May I ask What are those milk jugs for ?
it's a cloche
How long after you cut it .do you leave it in the ground
You leave one scape to be your timer and when it stands straight up, it's time to harvest.
Until the leaves turn brown and die back.
What about the leaves?
Are they part of the “scape,” or are the stems with a bulbous the only “scape?”
I’ve been chopping them up like green onions and adding to dishes and marinades.
Leave the leaves. You should only take the scapes for best results.

@@Voyageur314 harvest the scape, or the bulb, or the flowery thing?
@@milesaway3422 When the scape that you didn't cut stands straight up harvest the bulbs of all your garlic plants.
Very helpful video, thank you!
Yep. 3 years for those micro garlics from the scape. Next year I might be able to eat garlic.
Very helpful video! However, I do plan on cutting the scrap much lower!
Scapes remain green in my refrigerator for several months.
great video. may I ask what those milk jugs are for. Are they drip irrigation for potatoes?
cloche
Take the scape off as close to the bottom as you can.
Somuch like garlic
Very helpful. Thanks for sharing
Reminds me of Crockett's Victory Garden
The pointy end of the scape that flowers; is that edible also?
Darryl Fowler yes. When young like in the video. Once they start to mature, won't be as tender.
I am Montagnard indigenous I love garlic.
enjoy! 🧄
Good one

Thanks so that what coming out of my garlic in my raised bed .
interesting. garlic here is under $3 a pound.

That might be at the grocery store, BUT...if you look at some of the garlic farms' websites, the prices are VERY hefty!!
