We planted almost 500 cloves of Music last fall. We started off with a pound 4 yrs ago. We got 5 freezer bags of scapes here in downstate. We harvest it 2 weeks ago.
I started the video super interested in learning about garlic scapes but as soon as I seen Sasha's beautiful baby belly, I just wanted to hear about the baby! Lol congrats! My heart is all a flutter for your family! Glad you two are bringing a little man/woman into the world!
That field of garlic is envy on the screen. How cool! The dream for sure. I think I will plant garlic in our in-ground 8x12 bed this year after seeing how awesome that much garlic looks all together.
new to garlic scapes but bought some at the farmers market this morning! what a timely video! 😊 thanks for sjaring...now I want to get into doing my own!
We're further south than you. I learned so much from you and Sasha. My scapes are straight already. I'll still break them off, but will remember your teaching for earlier scape harvest next year.
Great info. First year growing and....I waited too long. Lesson learned. As you said bulbs were small and scapes were as tough as tent poles. 😁 the best way to learn (IMO) is by f-ing up, with a little bit of guidance. Thank you, for the guidance...😁
Great to know! I was just walking through my garden yesterday, noticed the elephant garlic scapes and wondered what to do with them. Sasha's looking lovely!🤗💛🤗
as per your advice I started using them fresh. My top multiplying onions are all producing bulblets and I have stiped all the side leaves so the scapes are a handy substitute. Not enough harvest this first year to lactic acid ferment them but hope to do that next year.
Hardneck garlic does really well in Alaska too one of the easiest crops to grow here. Also congratulations. You guys are a big inspiration to me wish you the best of luck.
I left all my scapes on my first season and that gave me a ton of seed stock. Didn't seem to hurt the size much. Bulbils need a lighter mulch and seem to work good with my strawberries (bc I pull most of the mulch back early in the season).
I moved here in the wi yet and have no garlic to harvest this year. But I’ve already put my order in for next year’s! I always thought if I ever started a farm, I’d specialize in garlic. Easiest thing I’ve ever grown!
I harvested all my scapes a month ago here in zone 8a and have just finished harvesting my garlic. Some bulbs are three inches in diameter(which is impressivesince they were constantly having to battle mint that kept coming back throughout the winter and kept needing to be weeded out from under and between the garlic! I have a lot of Inchellium Red Soft neck garlic so they didn't grow scapes. But I did get scapes from some hard neck garlic I grew.
Your garlic looks beautiful. You confirmed the idea I've made a mistake this year. It's been very dry here, but the tomatoes next to the garlic looked happy and I figured garlic was more of a Mediterranean crop, so I didn't water it. Now the stalks are all dying down, so I guess I might as well harvest the tiny bulbs. I just tell myself they will probably be extra flavourful ;). Feels weird to me that you have to keep on top of watering garlic in a place that's nicknamed "frog country". Probably because they're much more shallow-rooted than tomatoes?
We never have watered our garlic, BUT we mulch really deeply in the fall and often 'weed' by adding more mulch in the early spring. That has worked well for us and for the garlic getting consistent water levels
I let a few scapes stay on the plant this year and they formed a head and I just picked a couple of them and broke them apart. If I plant them this fall will they grow and be able to harvest garlic next year or will it take 2 years?
The bulbils they make are not actual true seed, they are in a way just tiny cloves. A good way to ramp up numbers initially but not my favorite way to propagate since it takes a long time and requires a lot of attention to watering and weeding at first
I noticed in previous videos you would harvest garlic and chop off the top leaving a few inches of the stalk. Is there a need to keep the leaves on while curing?
I leave them on and after a few weeks of drying I cut them off. If the inside of the stalk is still green then I know it isn’t dry enough for storing. Cutting the stem would probably expedite drying. But I would still want to leave enough where I could cut some to check if it was still retaining moisture.
We cut the stalks because 1) we have very very limited room to dry garlic and 2) the volume of material is just too much for transport, so we leave the leaves in the field to compost... If you have smaller amounts of garlic and have the room to hang them to dry WITH the stalks I believe it is better for them. Not hugely better but worth leaving.
You guys are going to be such awesome parents
Thanks so much
Love garlic, Sasha you are a glowing mommy....wish you both the best in parenting 😊❤
Harvesting tomorrow! Congrats on pregnancy❤

Did you end up with a symphony?
Wonderful! I started off my garlic growing journey with 8 pounds of seed back in 2010... You can definitely ramp this crop up for sure!
Forget the garlic scapes!!! 😊 what’s in the oven is what I’m excited for 😅❤ so happy for you lovelies 🎉 best reveal ever!!!!! Congratulations 🍾
Congratulations you two! You will be great parents

Thanks for this tip! I couldn’t help but notice, baby on the way! How wonderful!
Congratulations on your little bundle Sacha ❤
You are both going to give that baby a wonderful life 🎉
Incredible. I wish we had more property to grow this much garlic. Scapes should be ready next week. Thank you for sharing.
This is a silly amount unless you plan to sell a bunch

Congratulations on your future little garden assistant 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Great idea about using the leftover bits for stock Sasha! Did not even think about that.
Love Garlic Scapes and nice to see everyone out in the field. Blessings Abound!❤💐💐🌻🌻✨✨

Go for it!

You could let them go to seed. Maybe some?
🕊️
Maybe letting a few make seed to save would be worth while at this point, also leaving some just to learn what the difference may or may not be
Now I know why my bulbs are so small each year. Learned something again 🙏🙏🙏
Good luck next year!
I just harvested scapes from the garlic we bought from you, they look n smell amazing! Thank You !

Scapes harvested VERY early makes a VERY big difference in bulb size. You've got next year to try!

She is :)
Yeah, the elephant garlic scape is worth trying
@@edibleacres just had an omlette made with the elephant garlic scapes and wine cap mushrooms from our garden.
I didn't know you two are pregnant! Congrats!

thank you :)
We had our scapes last week. Delicious. Hope you are both well and that Sasha is doing well in her pregnancy. Xx
Just made scape pesto from our wild garlic and it’s so yummy! Also fermented scapes WOOT WOOT! 😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
That's a lot of scapes! I got maybe 75 this year and made broth. Tried dehydrating them last year. No bueno. Great sauteed.
Lots of great recopies for them for sure
I did it this year, it's awesome. Also all the green after garlic harvest

I need to do this. Thanks for the reminder. Sasha is looking wonderful 💕!

Sounds like a good design to ramp up numbers quickly at the start
Woo Hoo... excellent timing for this one.. Not ready to pick yet but I will be watching... You guys are great!!

It's a wonderful crop
Interesting, you've got this dialed in, I'll have to get out and harvest mine. I'll be adding them to my morning eggs!
Enjoy!

We just harvested our scapes earlier this week. Exciting time for me here in Northern New York
Wonderful!
Sasha, you're glowing, Mashallah🥰. Congrats to both of you 💚👍

Thank you I needed that info

Ours haven't come out yet. I'm in Zone 4 (Ontario). I love garlic scapes.

2 years from scape 'bulbils' to a decent sized garlic head. Worth it if you want to ramp up numbers :)
Mama!!!! 🎉💖

do you bother with a second scape harvest? as after you harvest the scape its still grows few inches befor harvest time
We do not
made scape pesto the other day - delicious
Good 👍
We are in Central Kentucky zone 6b, all our scapes were picked in May.
I could imagine
I've never grown hardnecks, I understand they put up bulbils instead of flowers. Have you let any go for propagation? If so, how did it work out?
I heard you will need to select and replant them for a good number of years before they finally get to a size that are comparable to nice heads
The bulbils they make are not actual true seed, they are in a way just tiny cloves. A good way to ramp up numbers initially but not my favorite way to propagate since it takes a long time and requires a lot of attention to watering and weeding at first
Can I recommend scapes, radishes sautéed in butter.
Getting your money's worth on that shirt, Sean.
Probably was $1.99 at Salvation Army 10 years ago, so yeah, it's been a good ROI
@@edibleacres I am the same with my gardening clothes. It's amazing how long some things last!☺
Some of my fav garments look shabby but are comfy and are true gardening companions.

My mistake... oof I harvest the scapes but don't stay up on it and so get a few miniatures which get turned to garlic powder and sauces.
Great use!

Yep! She's growing a tiny human. They tend to press and smush up against the organs you already have in your body making it harder to breathe.
