I'mma be honest as a bowler who actually cares more about how a ball looks on the lane. The explanation about a strong versus weak ball especially on a house pattern was SPOT ON. Great video and keep it up
I agree and the oil pattern measurements were also spot on. I'm currently a 175 average in San Antonio btw if anyone wants to have a bowling friend to practice with!
Let me know what you guys thought of this video! I’ve had a lot of requests for informational/instructional based content. I much prefer making the entertainment/challenge type videos(I even tried to make this one somewhat entertaining lol) But I can sprinkle in some stuff like this here and there
Thanks for the video. I fell right into that camp of people who don't pay too much attention to their breakpoint. I'll def keep this in mind and be more aware tomorrow during league.
I’ve been averaging about 155 since switching to 2 handed bowling. Used your advice in this video for tonight’s league game and shot a 196, 148, and a PR of 253 in the 3rd game. Thanks for the help!
Just something I've learned and what I teach the youth bowlers, if you are looking at the pins or keeping your eyes down lane the whole time then your body is going to want to launch the ball (too much down lane speed and not enough revs). If you bring your eyes closer, arrows to dots, then you'll lay it down at your mark rather than throw it past it. I do LOVE the concept you mentioned about finding brake point and THEN drawing that straight line back to your lay down spot. A strong mental picture helps the body perform the task.
thank you for this video, i am a 200 avg average bowler trying to nail down how i create my line. This video really gave me some ideas. I use the arrows and always have, i bowl at bowlero which makes it impossible to see the breakpoint do to all of the lights and reflections My dad who is a 170 avg bowler bowls off of "feel" and doesn't use any of the suggested dots/arrows to score and he does pretty well considering. I have to suggest that you do lane transition next as a video idea, that is the HARDEST thing a bowler has to go trough and we could use your wisdom. Thank you for making these videos they are so entertaining keep it up! :D
Great video Mr. 220 !!! .. awesome! .. this is exactly what I am trying to learn now. And trying to learn how to adjust as the lanes change, what ball to use, where to stand, where to aim, etc. I love these kinds of videos to help me to figure these things out. Most of the time I just get confused but I am learning.
I've started bowling at 5 until I was around 19. Went yesterday for the first time in years. I'm 41 now. I notice I track back to the foul line and stare at the foul line when I release it. Never really thought about it when I was younger. Searched it up, and i found your video. Glad I'm not the only one that does that. It's easier for me to focus on something smaller. If I keep looking down the lane on release, I'll get lost.
I watched this video last Friday from home about an hour or two before I went bowling (just to practice/have fun) and I just want to say it legitimately helped. I've been in a slump for almost two months. Right after I joined a league for the first time my scores went down. I don't know if I'm in my own head or putting too much pressure on myself but, this video gave me some tips that really seemed to help quite a bit and I truly think the next league night I'll get my first 200+ game in league.
I'm telling you Michael this instructional stuff will take you to another level beyond 20K subs and you should go give private lessons that would definitely give you some more revenue stream
Hahaha! I liked the first 10 seconds. Nice humor there. As for the rest of the video, it was a simple explanation without going into too much detail, that i think will help casual boalers a lot. Nitpick : on 01:42 that is the 8th board at the arrows, not the 9. But ok. Point made. And in the last shot, if you take the red line all the way back, you should drop the ball at around 25. But you laid down at 22, and it went to 15 (not 16 as shown). Other than these nitpicks, great video. I found your channel by acc....(nah i actually often search for other bowling channels). But i did subscribe and follow it mainly because of the heavy bowling balls and the humor. I try humor in mine but the topics are pretty sciency so it's not easy haha.
I got into bowling as in buying my own Bowling balls ans getting fitted for my hand about 2 years now. And never knew about the down-lane breakpoint. I always was told to use the arrows and wondering why I'm stuck. I started looking down lane like you said and wow.. thank you. Now learning when and where to move on the boards
Excellent video. I've been targeting closer to the dots than the arrows for several years now and I find that my ball gets into a roll much better that way. I tried to target down at the range finders like you mentioned as I found that most good house shot bowlers will have their ball rolling over board 8 or 9 down at 40 feet; however, my ability to hook the ball when I did that lost it's strength. Possibly I was getting to higher and higher speeds, not sure. These days with stronger equipment I'll stand somewhere between boards 25 to 28 and target boards 12 to 10. With weaker balls I'll move a bit more to the right. For spares I generally target at the tip of first range finder at 34 feet at various places on the lane. For example I stand on board 30 for the 10-pin and aim at board 9 at 34 feet. I'll try your suggestion and see if I incorporate it into my game. Thank you!
Hah I had no idea Malott did that for targeting. I actually started doing the same kind of thing a while back to reduce the amount of loft I was throwing and it made my shots far more consistent. Great video!
Fantastic video. I’ve been bowling all my life and somehow didn’t know the 4 dark boards down lane were break point markers. The only thing that might confuse beginners is that you mentioned “hit 9” without clarifying you meant you hit the 9th board.
I have figured out my release and approach (to a degree), the targeting for both the pocket and spare shooting is a weakness of mine. I hope to improve that and finally break my 100-199 curse.
While I enjoy your regular humorous videos and difference from other people it was nice to see an instructional video from you. Maybe good to mix in from time to time for those looking for help
Much appreciated this video, after I watched this i went bowling and bowled a 229 new pr, 2 months into throwing 2 hands. Using a venom shock! This vid definitely helped me understand what I was missing in the past.
I have always used the arrows, but recently started looking down lane to see where the breakpoint is in comparison to the indicators. It has really helped a lot, but im still not where I want to be. when I slide my left foot tends to be about 3 boards left of where I want it. when its where I want it the break point becomes critical so the arrow has to be on the money Great video keep it up. btw I should mention I bowl two handed backup
As I’m settling into my stance I look at the center dot at the foul line and then as I get ready to approach I draw a line up to the 3rd arrow and then back to the dot. As I release I look at a spot just past the dot where I lay the ball down, kinda like Wes Mallot
I know this has nothing to do with this video, but....How hard does a ball have to hit the lane to damage the wood? Mythbusters season 6, episode 9.....
Well most centers use synthetic wood so damaging the lane like decades ago doesn’t really happen unless you have some weirdo using a 20lbs bowling ball. 😅
@@hellsk100 yeah. The new synthetic lanes can take like 20,000lbs of force and not even be damaged. Unless you are lofting a 16lb ball at 30mph thats not happening
Perfect explanation! Going to try new things next trip! Can you do a video on how to roll the ball as opposed to throwing it ? I’m up to about 14-16 mph and am struggling to slow it down ! Up, slow down my approach of slow down my swing, and I still blast it. Our practice drills for hooking the ball and still haven’t gotten a handle on that either. Sometimes I can sometimes I can’t, but I’m trying. Thank you for all your help. Have a great game.,!
Thank you for sharing. The issue that I have is that the house that I bowl at doesn't have break point markers and I am currently having targeting issues.
I"ve tried some different looks over the years, but have the most success doing pretty much the same thing Mallott does. I start my swing toward the breakpoint and look right at the foul line on release. I rely on consistent launch angle and release point more than trying to point the ball to a target as I used to have a tendency to muscle the ball when I did so.
Very short and clear cut explanation. Thank you for the guidance. I’m an amateur bowler trying to get better (150/160 avg) who has only been looking at the arrows the entire time without knowing exactly what the ball is doing once it goes down the lane. Part of the reason for that is that my bowling alley always has the lights off. This was a much needed video for me to understand how to aim more accurately.
I didn’t even know that I target the same way as Wes. It’s so much easier for me to hit my target down lane when looking at the foul line instead of the arrows. Although I use my arrows as my mark to where I need to be, I never look at them when I throw. It took me a little bit to figure that out for myself, but I’ve been averaging over 180 minimum every time I play since then. Great video man, these tips can make a new player want to actually discover new things whilst bowling instead of just chucking 10 pd house balls down lane lol
I've only ever used the foul line as my target point. The way the light comes off the lanes makes me dizzy if I try and look out at arrows or beyond during approach. I will glance out to my break point before setting though.
I used to target the "pro-hashes" but more and more lanes I come across don't have them...including my center. I have to focus on the angle I cross my arrows and keep my speed in check... I have tried picking a spot down lane like a reflection (static) or something...but I found that picking a board on the bottom side of the arrow and one at the top of the arrow is where I keep my angle consistent.
For what seems like forever now, I usually start off while getting set by aiming at the arrows, while on the approach to throw the ball I transition down to the foul line to make sure I am throwing at my target during the release of the ball. Depending on the lane conditions I might only have to just look at the foul line depending on how the ball has been reacting through the game. For spares obviously I would start off at the pins I want to hit amd then aim through the arrows and foul line as needed to make the spare.
When you are at lanes without those down lane stripe targets what do you look at? We don't have them at ours, so I line my body up facing the triangle between the 3rd and 6th pin, and then I look at the dots. Similar to Wes Mallot. And if I'm standing far right and playing the gutter, I do it like Wes and focus mainly on the swing plane of my arm so that it is parallel to the #3 board and adjust off that, never looking at dots or arrows at all. Somehow it works. If I target past the dots the ball rolls way too long and doesn't make the turn.
Thanks for the vid! I took it to heart last week and bowled my first 600 series and a 220 game (my new high game 😁) I played another series last night on severely beat up lanes and managed a 550 series (my now second highest series).
So what do you do after drawing the line from your break point back to the arrows ? Continue on back to the foul line, then stand 6-7 boards off that ? Thanks
Me? You set up the tripod, all buff, hoodie, long hair, pink ball.. U call yourself, 220 avg bowler. I had to see whats up. Good instruction!! Next, get people to have a gravity fed shot. There is a disease of late timing out there. Thanks for all of your content!
so i understand the break point, but when you go to "draw your line back" what determines where? you didnt go straight back, you didnt go all the way to the far left. will it always be in the middle then?
However, as a practical matter, most people can't successfully tell whether or not their ball rolled over the where they want the ball to roll over at the break point. That is why it's important to establish A CONSISTENT DRIFT PATTERN WITH YOUR FOOTWORK IN THE APPROACH. Most bowlers need to keep their strategies to better bowling as simple as possible. Because "the sport of bowling" can get convoluted enough as it is. Playing lanes is an art based on a targeting system. Other factors are included such as various speeds and various types of equipment. Good video because it emphasizes a premium on ACCURACY. SO IT REPEATING SHOTS! WHICH IS DEVELOPED FROM PRACTICING THE RIGHT THINGS TO GET FUNDAMENTALS INGRAINED INTO "MUSCLE MEMORY". DRIFT PATTERN CONSISTENCY IS ONE OF THOSE FUNDAMENTALS.
it's the beans ,thanks and does it change with the 2 handed style. i just switched and can only throw to an area on the lane as I cant seem to read the lanes with a ball that hooks crazy compared to my other ball. if that makes sense
I need the weak ball vs strong ball video I am new to using a personal ball I’ve been hooking house balls for a while and struggled with my custom because of curving to early I’ve been working on throwing it further out but feel like I’m doing to much work with that any suggestions
Great video, so u don't trace where I want to from the breakpoint intentionally but I feel like I do it subconsciously. It's funny u mention Wes Malott cause I do exactly what he does, maybe not exactly to the foul line but close to it.
I get to my starting spot on the approach, then kind of trace my desired reaction on the lane. Then I look at the foul line, until I get to the top of my backswing, where I move my eyes to the arrows, then to the breakpoint as I release. Kind of like Wes Mallot
I have watched many bowling tip videos and this is the first time I've heard that where your foot ends up actually matters. It's always about where to stand and where to aim, never where your foot ends up
So for the houses which do not have the tracers down lane, how do you ‘see’ the breakpoint target down lane without any reference point. The houses I bowl in with the tracers I average 10 points higher because I can visually see where I need to be for the breakpoint, but most of the houses I play at do not have tracers.
Great info thanx! Question maybe for a new video, your thumb fit. Hard to tell but it looks like your thumb has alittle gap on the back side, like its alilttle loose. I've gone from loose to super tight to inbetween recently. Managed to almost destroy my game while slowly getting a better forward power roll keeping hand behind/under ball. Whats your opinion on thuimb fit, release etc
If you are targeting the 8 board at the break point, drawing a line back to the 17 board at the arrows as you explained it in the video, where do you start with your feet?
Awesome teaching technique about arrows and breakpoints very simply explained. Thank you how are use this technique next time I practice and for my league bowling 🎳🎳🎳. #PEACE✌🏾
I'm brand new at bowling. I often hear references about standing on certain boards (e.g., the 9th board). I know there are 5 boards between each arrow but each board is only about an inch wide and the average adult foot is about 3 1/2 inches wide. So how can one stand on the 9th board for example without also standing on the 10th, 11th, and 12th board or 8th, 7th, and 6th board at the same time? I just understand. 🤔
Good video. I kind of felt I should draw an imaginary line. But I would often not know where the breakpoint would be. I do have around a 170 average and been bowling since I was small and currently in my mid 20's. It would sometimes be hard to tell and get harder when my arm doesn't stay straight. But hopefully I would improve. I'm a lefty and using the 900 global eternity pin up. I think this is why I don't strike much but I am usually good with my spares even the 7 pin and some splits. So, it is just the strikes need improving. I usually aim around the 2nd arrow. My strike percentage is currently only 29% according to the lane talk app. Not sure if it is just me, but I did also notice the ball doesn't hook as I think it should so, I think I have to aim it in a certain way to get it to the strike zone. I did have thoughts of getting a different ball or maybe try pin down. My bowling alley is at least known for harder strikes. Just my thoughts. My goal is to get to the 200 average. I thought to add people do watch me at times as they view me as a good bowler. Weird. 😅😎
I have been bowling since I was 5 (37 now) and once I start my approach I look just past the foul line. It's been hard to try and change and look down the lanes. Before my approach though, I do look at what arrow/break point I want to hit, but once my feet start moving, I look just past the foul line. Guess I'm kind of like Wes Malott
I aim with my left foot to help keep my release near my ankle (two hander). So i do the same as Wes malott and draw a line from the break point to the foul line dots and look towards my slide foot area on release. Only problem I had doing this was my release was too early messing up my form and release so i practiced until there was no end and decided to change my whole approach with a shorter one to help me hold on the ball longer on my release.
Hello fellow 220! Interesting, I’ve never tried targeting the foul line and I don’t see how it would work too well but it’s apparently effective for some
@@220avg The idea is that if you set the ball down on the exact same board every time, the oil will take the ball to the exact same place at the break point. You adjust by either moving boards or moving the angle of your break point. The advantages are that it doesn't matter where your slide step is because it can't change very much for you to lay the ball down on the same board. You are also looking at a target one foot away instead of 15 which should be much easier to hit. Of course there are a million other adjustments you can make regardless of how you target.
I look at the dots. Watch it roll over the arrows then watch the breakpoint. I watch the shape at 3 different points. Like he said the laydown affects your launch angle
I always use the dots. If i hit the dot and the ball curved to much i would throw the next one a board to the right and keep adjusting that way until i hit the pocket.
This made me realize that, with the exception of right side spares, I basically turn my eyes off as I'm going to bowl. I have some stuff left to figure out lol
I honestly start looking at the arrows and if my shot is accurate, then I stay there. If my shot isn't on point, I then move to the area about 10 feet past and aim. If I'm still not accurate, I then look at the break point and aim for that area. Might be weird, but works for me. If none of them are good, I know my approach is garbage that night and I need to fix that.
I aim for the arrows, but once the ball crosses the aim mark, I follow the ball and its action through until it leaves the pin deck. I watch everything that happens to the ball and the pins including noting ball deflection and how it exits the pin deck.
I've went bowling like maybe 50 times. I was around the 180 average. I put no curve on the ball though. No clue what I was doing. If I ever go bowling again this might help.
I'mma be honest as a bowler who actually cares more about how a ball looks on the lane. The explanation about a strong versus weak ball especially on a house pattern was SPOT ON. Great video and keep it up
I know most ppl love seeing that massive skid flip reaction that weak balls will give you 😂
@@220avg I honestly can't stand that reaction type. I like tons of continuation as it usually carries better
@@SevenKS77 That part is debatable, it's all dependent on ball, speed and rev rates. Both work equally well for different bowlers.
Good stuff man. I'm a Mallott style..line back from breakpoint to the foul line, release on it mark at the line.

Thank you Thank you Thank you... We need more videos like this... Thx💯💯💯
Awesome thank you. Mid-season in my first league handicap series. Hoping for a 200 game soon.
Yeah dude, I have been working on exactly this aspect of my game and it gave me immediate gains. Good idea for a video.
It’ll probably be harder to learn but I’ve learned to tell approximately where the breakpoint is and targeting the individual boards down lane
Thanks for the vid! I took it to heart last week and bowled my first 600 series and a 220 game (my new high game 😁) I played another series last night on severely beat up lanes and managed a 550 series (my now second highest series).
Yo good stuff Jman!! Glad to hear that 😁
This was a great video i would love to see more This helped me and something ive been chatting to my bowling friend about. Thanks Ryan
It's always about where to stand and where to aim, never where your foot ends up
Any suggestions for bowlers that have cross dominant vision? Where looking at close targets like arrows or dots distorts targeting.
its bowling not a rifle
This was very informative! Thank you 220 avg bowla!
Great alignment tip! Good job.
So for the houses which do not have the tracers down lane, how do you ‘see’ the breakpoint target down lane without any reference point. The houses I bowl in with the tracers I average 10 points higher because I can visually see where I need to be for the breakpoint, but most of the houses I play at do not have tracers.
It’ll probably be harder to learn but I’ve learned to tell approximately where the breakpoint is and targeting the individual boards down lane
Highly informative. You are a great teacher.
I'm definitely trying this in league on Wednesday. Thanks a bunch!
I loved this instructional video. More please!
Thank you so much. I was just thinking about this and you uploaded it.
Great video and straight to the point! I’d like to see more videos like this here and there.
Great advice. Looking forward to trying this.
Gold, pure Gold information. Many thanks.
What board was your left foot on for the 16-8 shot ? Thanks
How can you tell(and can you change) your breakpoint?
If you are targeting the 8 board at the break point, drawing a line back to the 17 board at the arrows as you explained it in the video, where do you start with your feet?
It depends on your approach and how much you drift, as you practice you’ll get the hang of it
Awesome teaching technique about arrows and breakpoints very simply explained.
Where I line up my the right edge of my left foot is what I call the board I’m standing on. I’m not sure if it’s different for everyone else
Right on! This helped a lot. Thanks. More please
Weird. 😅😎
Loved the FNAF suspense music thrown in for a few seconds at the beginning from fnaf 2 those games are hella good!
This was a great explanation video🔥
I use the first dot on the right near the middle and line it up with the the second arrow from the right
I aim with my left foot to help keep my release near my ankle (two hander).
I too am a 220 average bowler. I do more the Wes Mallot strategy but my chin isn’t burrowed into my chest!
When u said that’s a topic for a whole different video (regarding strong vs weak balls hooking early/late did u make a video like that?
I look at the dots. Watch it roll over the arrows then watch the breakpoint. I watch the shape at 3 different points. Like he said the laydown affects your launch angle
I always use the dots. If i hit the dot and the ball curved to much i would throw the next one a board to the right and keep adjusting that way until i hit the pocket.
This made me realize that, with the exception of right side spares, I basically turn my eyes off as I'm going to bowl. I have some stuff left to figure out lol
I use the arrows, never really thought about using the breakpoint
Loved it, thanks for the information. Only if I could get my release to hit the same spot every time 😅
What speed do you typically roll?
The bowling alley I go to doesn't have marks at the break point.
I'm getting better at my release hitting the pocket but don't always get a strike
i haven’t notice the break point on lanes tbh maybe im not paying attention enough
HiH also targets at foul line, if can make a vid show casing that would be awesome 🙏🤙
I aim for the arrows, but once the ball crosses the aim mark, I follow the ball and its action through until it leaves the pin deck. I watch everything that happens to the ball and the pins including noting ball deflection and how it exits the pin deck.
Good stuff Mike! Keep these videos coming. I'm a lefty though, so 15 feet / 5 eyes all day 🤣.
Typical 😂😂
Awesome video. Keep them coming
I've went bowling like maybe 50 times. I was around the 180 average. I put no curve on the ball though. No clue what I was doing. If I ever go bowling again this might help.
what makesit hard if your one that cant see the arrows
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing
