- This Just The Tip video was asked for by a subscriber! Thanks Dan for the request. In this video we go over some kayak fishing tips about trolling from a kayak. This is mainly a trout fishing technique but works for many other species. I decided to paddle my new Jackson Coosa FD for this video since paddling is more relatable for the viewers watching this tip video. Headed up to Jordanelle Reservoir to make this video in hope of it being a nice night and boy was it!

Good video
Dude awesome video, this is exactly what I was looking for! I just bought my first kayak and really wanted to troll while paddling. Thank you x1000
Thanks for watching! Glad I could help.
Have you tried it? What kind of fish did you catch?
Awesome that helped a ton. I never noticed the paddle extra part when u get a bite. And I needed to slow down. Thanks
Glad I could help brother!
Great tip ! Fish on then 3 quick paddle strokes then reach for the pole. Love it !
Thanks! Keep those tips coming. A big help for a newbie from Oz.
Glad it helped!
Excellent video! Thank you for focusing on the basics.
Thanks brother!
Thanks! Cant wait to try this
Your welcome! Good luck!!
Great explanations especially on the challenges with two rods. Learned my lessons the hard way. I always paddle away from shore to avoid those snags on 2nd rod while fighting the fish on other rod.
Thanks for watching! Glad I may have been of some assistance. Tight lines!
Good video.
I love Trolling fishing.
Great vid, lol at the fish jumping out near you. I've had similar with a Tailor almost jumping into my kayak lol!
Haha ya it’s frustrating!
I have always found trolling to be the best way to catch trout from a kayak. Good tips! Sometimes they respond well to a faster pace, at least where I am at.
The for for watching! I agree. Sometimes you can be moving quickly and they’ll smack it!
For me my bite always tends to come on a turn to troll back over an area
Excellent video, very well explained, greetings from Chile.
Thanks!
Greetings from the UK (Wales). Thanks for the trolling tips which will work very well off our coastline in Wales. Sea Bass here are plentiful so can't wait to put my lures to best effect. Tight Lines and thanks
Thanks for watching and good luck!
Super helpful!!!!!
Glad to help!
I often vary speed and zig zig around nicely in my Old Town PDL while trolling.
Very helpful thanks
Your welcome! Good luck!
Looks like a beautiful place to fish! I'll be adding kayak fishing to my channel this year. Can't wait! Trying to learn as much as I can about it at this point. Just subscribed and I'll be checking out your other videos next.
Thanks man! Kayak fishing is great! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Nice tip on the 2-3 good paddles on the rod holder side before you set the hook
Thanks man! Glad I could help!!
Good tips. I'm set to go trolling for striped bass this weekend
Sweet brother! Good luck!!
Very nice fish!
Thanks!
You got one subscribe man
just the tip lol nice video!
😂 thanks!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Some good advice here. Gotta try the rapalas. I normally use spinners or rooster tails. I like the suggestion about a couple hard paddles when you get a bite.
Awesome fish there.
Good luck man! I used panther martins back in the day. But the rapalas are much easier to use and produce the same if not better for me.
Nice fish bro!
Thanks brother!
Awesome video
Thanks!
Good video !
Thanks!
Subscribed thanks fir the info buddy
Thank you!
The "just the tip" in the title made me lol. You know I'm watching for the tip but I'm getting a whole lot more than just the tip lmao
ROFL
I use a Predator XL Minn Kota (electric troling motor) with fishfinder /GPS. I find 1.7mph is a great speed for trolling for trout. Usually one line top water, the other down deeper on a downrigger. Usually slay them up in the eastern sierra's.
Sweet!
I just watched my local lake get stocked with 200 rainbows and wish the water was this glassy!
Haha I wish the water around here was this glassy too. It’s been a windy spring!!!
I put a night crawler on a deep diver and catch big fish every kind
Thanks, ever do bottom bouncing?
I have not. May try next year for some walleye.
Good video.... actually just added a rod holder for my inflatable sup I'm ready to troll.
Thanks! And good luck!!!
What length of pole are you using?
Great video. Great fish. Great tips. Does the angle of the rod matter much? Point forward, back or sideways better? Cheers mate.
Thanks man! I prefer a little forward to be able to see them and have the rod be able to flex and the tip not aim at the fish when fully flexed. That way the rod can fight the fish while you are getting ready to grab and real it.
You should do a vid on catfish from a kayak happy fishing😂
I’ll work on that! Thanks tanner.
Hey this was really helpful im trying to get into trolling and wondering how far back would you have your lure as per depth your fishing in???
Glad I could help. With this style rapala more line doesn’t always equal more depth. If you want to change depth you’ll have to change lures or use some kind of dippsy diver or down-rigger. I usually run around 25-30 yards back.
@@ShootFishLife really appreciate this thank you!!
Can I use an anchor wizard with an anchor trolly on a bonafide ss127 and when im trolling if i get a fish on just anchor in place while im fighting the fish. Im usually only in 30 - 10 feet of water.
?
Sorry I read that as a statement of what you did not a question lol. You could do that. But if your already trolling your momentum when the anchor hits will swing you kayak in a direction you will have to learn. Then if you have a big fish it might not be the direction you want and now also have an anchor line in the water to keep the fish out of. Personally that sounds like more of a hassle then its worth but I have never tried it so I cant say for sure.
What do you have your camera mounted on that is shooting behind you?
That one was a homemade pole, I have a video on it somewhere on my channel. Now I used the yak attack camera mount.
How far behind your yak do you cast before you start to paddle? I'm going to start trolling for Smallies.
25-50 yards or so. Just depends how picky they are being. Your lure will also very depth based on distance behind your yak.
Nice video thanks. What’s the speed you go? Lake or sea? Thanks
Never done this in the sea. But for the lake usually about 1.5 mph. But if your not getting bites play with your speed and remember how fast you were going when you get one.
How do you know how deep your crankbait is going?
When you buy cranks they have a depth they run on the package. Most the ones I have used for trolling for trout have been 10-15ft. That's why they work better for me in the morning or evening as the trout come closer to the surface.
Does the angle of the rod matter while trolling?
A little. The closer to the water the deeper your lure will be with the same amount of line out. I also find it easier to watch closer to the water then way up high. Also if trolling two rods the rod that does not have a fish line will lie on the water vs possibly wrapping around you or your gear on the kayak when you stop moving forward.
Do you need some weight when you are trolling with this type of lure? Or just the lure by itself and that’s it? (beginner question)
The lure itself will dive. You purchase the depth you want when buying the lure. No weights.
@@ShootFishLife thank you 😊
I’m from south Texas and they stocked the ponds here with rainbow trout and I got to catch one. It’s a very pretty fish, it tasted like shit though.
You have to get non-planters for some taste. But there still not the best. Kokanee is where it’s at for taste!
I just started trolling and in 20 hours of fishing have struggled to even get a bite. Can you make a video about common beginner mistakes in trolling for trout?
I can work on another video of some sort. When have you been going. If it’s recent this heat has those trout super deep and harder to catch. Best chance now is first light and last light.
@@ShootFishLife That makes a lot of sense. I have been going 7am-12pm on weekends (well after first light). Using a dodger rig with inline weight and spinners/spoons trolling around 2-3 mph. My suspicion was too much speed so I would slow down to 1.5 mph and still nothing. I may just have to get out there earlier.
It may not be getting deep enough also. But I would try earlier for sure.
@@ShootFishLife I'll give it a try! Thanks!
Good luck!
hey what type of knife is that on your pdf?
Honestly I do not remember someone gave it to me. It’s a little big though. I’d look into the NRS knife that is made to go on your vest.
And that red one IS a trout lure.
What type of rod holders are you using? Thanks
These are RAM road holders. They come with the Jackson.
@@ShootFishLife Right on. Thanks. What kind of set up tackle did you catch that rainbow on (if you remember)? I think you said light rod but wondering rod/line etc.
Can’t remember which rod for sure but either light or medium light. 20lb braid with a 8lb floro leader
can u show us were to troll plz
What do you mean?
What to look for when ur trolling areas etc
I will work on that in the summer! Thanks!
Just the tip???
😂 it was supposed to be videos with tips and tricks. I didn’t think about it at first…. 😂
