  • Not many anglers associate trolling and kayaks but with the advent of pedal drive kayaks, trolling becomes a leisurely way to maintain speed and direction while covering tons of water.

Stream Trout in lakes are often stocked in bodies of water that have pristine water quality that help support the oxygen and temperature needs of the fish. Many of these lakes are tucked off the beaten path to preserve their cleanliness which can make accessing them difficult. Luckily, kayaks provide an easy way to travel light without compromising fishability.
Wired2Fish staffer McKeon Roberts sets out on a scenic stream trout lake with a simple strategy of trolling cranks from a kayak. The pedal system in the Old Town Topwater PDL allows for hands-free fishing and the ability to dial in speed while the crankbait does the rest. McKeon keeps a close eye on his electronics to avoid warmer shallow water and keep the crank running between 1-1.8mph.
A limber rod is used to absorb the shock of violent strikes and a thinner lighter line is used to bring the bait down to maximum running depth. This light tackle setup keeps it simple and makes for a great fight against drag peeling trout.

My favorite way to fish. We have two Natives and just waiting on the new Bigfish 108 to be delivered. People gripe at what a pedal kayak costs but fun per dollar, they have brought me far more enjoyment than any boat I have owned.

Oh man, it’s so fun. Gets you into some awesome places boats can’t get to and they’re easy to fish out of too.

Awesome video. I always troll spoons or flies from my Predator PDL, I'll have to try a small crank next time.

Nice vid on trolling technique. I agree with you on sun and lure visibility. I also think color/flash has something to do with grabbing their attention. Since my So Wis main lake is much shallower, I have been Kay-trolling a 6th Sense Movement 80WK Saltwater in Pink Smash. It really does better on sunny days, like you mentioned. I think the waking also grabs the trout's interest.

Thanks, David. I can totally see that wake bait catching their eye. Appreciate the comment. Might have to give it a try!

You seem to know what you’re doing. Right size reel, GREAT rod for trout, and the correct color choice for fishing rainbow trout (pink). Now here’s what I think of fishing with crankbaits. From my experiences with treble hooks for trout, you don’t want to horse them to the boat as soon as possible but instead, bring them close the kayak/boat and fish them a little longer so they could be worn out a little bit more. Then, once you notice that they are less finicky, you should quickly net them. This though, is fishing with a looser drag than what you have on (a tighter drag). I’ve learn that the drag from bass fishing to trout fishing plays a MAJOR role in catching fish and landing them. Just my ✌️cents. Keep the videos coming because these videos are HOT!!!

Trout and treble hooks are definitely nerve wracking.. I think you are right thou. Could have had the drag a few ticks looser! The tough part is keeping them pinned when they go air born!! Thanks a lot for commenting and tuning in Neng Yang-

I have that same Rapala in all 3 sizes. Looks like they're coming out of the box this weekend in my brand new Hobie.

Shad dancers are pretty much all I have been using for trout in lakes. I have only used the #4's so far. Just for the size. The 5 and 7 may dive a little deeper but I have also changed my approach to using braid for thinner diameter and less buoyancy (just loosen the drag to account for trolling strikes and treble hooks) I can confidently say I can get those #4's down 15 feet which is just brushing the thermocline in the lakes I fish. Give it a try! Thanks for the comment-

Wired2Fish I just got the #4's a week ago. But I put 7 rainbows in the boat for my daughter and 2 nieces in 1.5 hrs with a #5 and nothing else was getting bit. Out of 4 poles out only the #5 caught any fish.

Caught my PB Rainbow on a lipless crank, which 7lbs..Also was trolling it..I didn't have a net handy, when I grabbed him, he threw the bait and buried a hook in my finger..haha

They are squirrelly!! Nice fish man. Pick up one of those conservation series nets from Frabill. They are rubber and good for trout and hooks don’t get stuck in them near as easily.

Yes sir! The seat is adjustable so you can scoot right up to the pedals. There is also a 10 and 12 foot pedal drive kayak from Old Town called the Topwater.

You'll get hits when you turn direction quite often when they are biting.

Yep, just a subtle change in the baits action can trigger a strike!
