- 2nd part of a series of Northumberlands hidden places. I headed to Shaftoe where an ancient landscape is waiting to be explored. The area is the site of ongoing archaeological investigations, which have found evidence of rock shelters used by early prehistoric hunter-gatherers. A fascinating place where the remains of an ancient river stands but no water flows and strange rock formations cover the landscape.
Hiya Mick, What i would give to be able to go back 5000 years or so. There must be hundreds of secret places in the UK still hidden and waiting to be found. Thanks for showing us round your neck of the woods again, Its a pleasure to watch! Cheers Mick, peter.
Thanks Peter yes I would love to have seen how it looked up there in the past just lucky to have such places on my doorstep to explore. Atb. Mick.
Excellent Mick!! I do love all the historical places and especially the hidden places you show us.. thank you so much!! I could imagine that cave as a home away from home.. just put a tarp over the opening and lite a fire... home sweet home!! ATB Maria
Thank you Maria about 10 years ago someone was living in the cave, it is very sheltered and dry as a bone so it could be a great shelter if ever needed. Take care. Mick.
Hi Mick your giving away the beauty of Northumberland lol there's quite a few special/magical locations I think you have been to one blawearie also some interesting locations near wooler with circles carved into the rock Northumberland has so much to offer and via alwinton old whiskey distilleries great video and great music with the Northumbrian pipes
Thank you yes we are lucky Northumberland has many fine areas to explore, hopefully I still have more to discover. Blawearie is one of my favourite spots and maybe one day I will be brave enough to venture further into the Cateran Hole then again maybe not lol. Thanks for watching. Mick
I used to live on the farm at Wallington, and had an excellent view of Shaftoe from my bedroom window. Such a fascinating place. I thoroughly enjoyed your video :)
Thank you Beth. That's some view you had :-) Mick.
Just my cup of tea this stuff! Love these places Mick, just gets your imagination working.
There must have been a huge Ice sheet up there to cause that cut through the landscape. I agree with Terry, these wee series are fantastic and shows us the more hidden areas of Northumberland that still show its ancient natural history. Loved the pipes at the end with the cave. First class Mick.
Thank you Sinclair yes its fantastic up there lots of nooks and crannies to explore. The gap in the crag is called Salters Nick the old route of Salters Road which was used to smuggle salt across the border to avoid paying taxes. I once went to the cave about 10 years ago and someone was living in there. Also some great cave art by Mickey in 1974 lol. Cheers. Mick.
blamhof
Aye the good old days when we could avoid the tax man! Funny thing but salt was as big a business as coal was at one time! I'm sure these roads were used for more than just that, Booze etc! I'm not sure but there seemed what looked like wagon wheel ruts worn into the stone in places there? If so there was a lot of traffic.
Sinclair Fergus Smith
There's a big patch of bare rock with what looks like channels running across it , not sure what caused it Sinclair ? Could be water run off or as you say wheel ruts. A very interesting place for sure.
Yes, fascinating! That structures at 2:16 and 5:04 do look man-made, Mick. Shouldn't we expect some aqueducts from Roman times over here? At 9:35 a good shelter for wildcamping! And some special & very nice footage in your vid there too. ATB Wilco
Thanks Wilco yes the Romans were very active here , a Roman road passes close by and it is about 20 mile from Hadrians Wall. I have often thought about bivvying in that cave, maybe one day lol. Atb. Mick.

Thank you pleased you enjoyed the video. Take care. Mick
Nice Pic to start the vid, the cave looks like a good camp spot for a night Mick lots of nooks & crannys to wild camp, lovely area, glad the bracken is dying back lol, nice music at the end, cheers,Derek
Thanks Derek aye its not as wild up there with the bracken dying off and makes for easier walking. Lots of places to hide away up there. A great place to explore my friend. Mick.
Nice one Mick, some great scenery down there mate. Those caves looked like they would be quite inviting if the heavens opened. Really enjoying this series of vids, putting the spot light on some of the hidden wonders in a beautiful part of the country. AtB, Jimmy :)
Thanks Jimmy yes that cave is bone dry and about 10 years ago someone was living in there. Its a fantastic area and every time I return find something new to look at. Thanks for watching bud. Mick.
Great Mick thanks for the tour. Love nature and the history thats comes with it. Must do a hike with you one day you got some great places up there. The wood at 4.33 any good for hammocks?.Autumn is showing all her beauty now fantastic a t b Take care best to Ann Daz.
Thanks Daz yes would love to show you around Northumberland bud, maybe one for the future. That wood is a bit tightly packed with trees I think for a hammock but there are lots of stealth spots for a tent and you could even bivvy in the cave, nice and dry in there. Yes the colours are fantastic now bud. Atb. Mick.
Amazing video Mick, the music and scenery is beautiful, if the rocks and landscape could hold memories, what tales would they tell?. you have the knack for finding Northumbria's most secret places, thanks for uploading and sharing with us, Atb, Damian.
Thank you Damien always bleak up there but also a beautiful spot with lots of history, as you say I bet they could tell some tales from the past. Atb. Mick.
Nice one Mick, another bit of Northumberland I haven't explored yet. The cave looks good for a bivi, I've camp in the one at Simonside called the Ousen house but it's a bit damp, you get great views of the Tyneside lights on a clear night.
Thanks Mark it's well worth a trip, great just scrambling among all the crags. The cave is ideal for a bivi, its bone dry with a great view over the countryside. Atb. Mick.
How many people have walked along there Mick and don`t realise they are walking on an ancient river bed, there would have been a lot of hard graft and effort to build those steps up to the cave I`d love to know when and why the steps were built, fascinating area mate great vid as allways, ATB, Regards George
Thank you George I have looked on the net for info on the cave and the only thing I could find was during the time of the Jacobite rebellion it was said to be where the Earl of Derwentwater hid from government agents before he was charged with high treason and executed on London’s Tower Hill in 1716. So maybe this was why the steps were placed there in case he needed to hide in a hurry lol Atb. Mick.
Hello Michael, A Fellow Geordie here, Michael Potts, you must , or maybe have read a book by A G Bradley and the Romance of Northumberland, May 1908, I loved what you have done to create such a wonderful dreamland of our county, I Live in Philadelphia Pa USA now but love my home and its history
+Mike Potts Hi Mike. No never read it but will definitely check it out. Thanks for the comment. Northumberland takes some beating for sure. Mick
Thanks Mike, AG Bradley was writing about each county around the turn of the century and also the eastern US and Canada, he knew his history for sure and usually travelled on Bicycle or train as well as Hiking, he uses old terminology but its understandable, what camera do you use?
Regards
Michael
+Mike Potts Yes sounds very interesting I will hunt a copy out. I use a Nikon D3200 with just the standard lens. Take care. Mick.
Great Mick, do like this new series your doing pal very interesting..:)
Can just picture that river running through that landscape, wish we could time travel to see do you.!!!! ?
Cheers for showing us around mate.
Thanks Terry It would be great to see these places as they were. It defintely has a prehistoric feel about the place and in several areas flints have been found which is attracting the attention of archeologists. Thanks for watching my friend. Mick.
blamhof Maybe a wild camp there Mick ?
Tee Campez
Plenty of places to stealth camp Terry or even a bivvy in the cave , but every time I have been the wind howls and the skies are dark and it has never appealed to camp there. Maybe one day but I prefer the rolling hills of The Cheviots.
Fantastic scenery Mick, I really enjoyed that. Now, pause the video at 3'17"... can you see the scary face in the rock on the far right? Maybe I just have an overactive imagination :) atb
Thanks Neil yes I can see the face just pleased I didn't notice when I was there lol. Atb. Mick.
lovely video Mick but missed seeing my little Ruby ATB Ann
Cheers Ann, little Ruby had to be returned to the car due to the close attention of the cows with calves in the field I had to cross lol
Beautiful landscape.
Thank you for the comment Jai. Mick
Great video thanks for sharing that's going on the to do list. Atb Pete
Thanks for watching. Atb. Mick
took the kids on Saturday, thoroughly enjoyed it really interesting the ancient river bed because as you say it looks quite obvious but its so high up its all a bit baffling? great place atb
Aye its a interesting spot, pleased you's had a good day.
Class Mick, wonder what the cave was used for? beautiful music mate, your part of the country looks special Mick :) Tim
Thanks Tim yes it's a lovely part of the world. The cave has some history, during the Jacobite rebellion it was said to be where the Earl of Derwentwater hid from government agents before he was charged with high treason and executed on London’s Tower Hill in 1716 and I know someone was living in it a few years ago. Atb. Mick
Wow amazing mate!

Thanks Mike yes a great area to explore my friend. Mick.
Very nice vid. Do have a grid ref for that cave?
This is the grid ref for the Devils Punchbowl or Pipers Chair as it is sometimes called NZ052816. The cave is directly below, routes down either side of the rock. Thanks for watching. Mick
Thanks mate.

Hi Mick, when you got to punchbowl, did you climb onto it to see where the "ogles" I think it was who, hollowed the stone cup and filled it with wine when they got married?
I didn't climb up this time but I've been up before and seen the hollow , normally full of rainwater. Are you from Ashington? Knew a fella with your name years ago haha
Do you mean the poser from the central? Aye that's me, that's not peasy is it? I thought I recognized you but wasn't sure without a crash helmet on! Ha
