If you know where this stone is located, please keep it to yourself.
Me and my daughter go in search of a hidden standing stone in some Northumbrian woodland. The stone is the last remaining of what would've once been one of the largest standing stone circles in North England. Up until the mid-19th century this stone was part of 2 large stone circles with a centre stone over 10ft high. However, the landowner of the time decided to pull the stone circles and the centre stone down and cut them into stone gateposts and to break them up to be used for dry stone walling. Only the one stone now remains hidden in the woods.
When doing the research for this stone, I found a site that said the stone was still in use by local Wiccans. That offerings were frequently found on top of the stone including some stones that had been marked with runes. Sadly, we found no such offerings but to show our respect to any Wiccans that still used the site, we left a offering of our own, some quartz and fluorite crystals that we had found on past walks in the North Pennines.

my daughter is right into crystals & healing not so much witchcraft so she was happy that you didn't disclose the location 👍👍

I will keep the location quiet for now. I might or might not include it on the Grand Tour but still a long way to go before then. I will check the site again shortly after the Summer equinox and see if it is being used by the Wiccans still and then make a call on whether to visit Grand Tour or not.
If the site is still being used by people then I don't want to reveal it.
I came across a peice when I was doing some research on Old Fawdon Hill near Ingram where some person into Wicca had buried a piece of fluorite and quartz into the hill to summon Queen Mab, the queen of the fair folk. That's why I decided to leave a quartz and fluorite crystal at the stone in case someone was still using the site.
The place is on the OS map, so it isn't a complete secret, unlike a complete stone circle that me and my daughter visited on section 27 of the Grand Tour (not yet completed because of lockdown and weather/gear failure issues) which isn't on any OS map post the 1864 map.

There are many of these stones in Northumberland and so ‘special’ I think. They have a majesty of their own. I recall eventually finding a small group I’d seen on a map, they were rather forbidding and the sky was that leaden grey-blue colour. None of my photos came out of that trip, but were fine for the rest of the holiday. I am a bit more respectful now 😮🙂 Thank you for this lovely video.

    Nice one Alice!
Love those hidden stones in comparison to the “tourist attraction” ones😂

Thank you Mark. Took some finding this one but now I know where it is, it is incredibly easy to reach.
You are going to love episode 27 of the Grand Tour once lockdown is finished and I can complete it... we've tried twice to finish the walk and both times my daughter's waterproofs have failed.
It contains a complete stone circle that is only mentioned on the 1864 map and no subsequent maps... so it has remained relatively hidden. It was funny because when we visited there were loads of hikers passing by on a popular trail and we were heading off in the 'wrong' direction and it was just over the rise of a hill out of site from the main trail... all these people passing by a hidden stone circle without ever realising it was there.
Hope you are doing well Mark. Take care. Alice

amazing place...surprised there was no cameras..!
went walking down holwick some years ago and stumbled upon a small orchard that grew kentish cobnuts, so started to grab some (as you do), and the next thing i knew there was an old guy walking around... i made a sharp exit..!

There might've been some cameras but we met with nobody.
I've bumped into gamekeepers on a few hikes because of hidden cameras. Especially in the Pennines.

@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice yeah, I'm an mtb'er and often encounter 'footpaths' - and actually was out tonight down wolsingham and a track near bradleyfarm cafe - had a bit sign saying 'no horses' or 'bikes' etc, so went along to wolsingham and rode along the track (east, north of the river) and came back to the back end of this track (that leads to the a689) - but no signs, so rode up it...haha...best do that one after hours, or a weekend...but great bike ride..!

this one was part of a huge stone circle, possibly the largest in Northumberland, it is the only stone remaining as the landowner ended up using the remaining stones for stonewalling before they could be protected. Similar story to other stone circles and some ancient monuments in the county.

Thank you. I would love to have seen it before the circles were knocked down. There's a brief account of it being investigated by a single member of the Society of Antiquaries, Newcastle and then when a group of them went back to investigate the site, they found the circles destroyed and the landowner cutting them up for gate posts and drystone walling. Sacrilege. There was another stone circle near Simonburn that was destroyed too. I always used to think that our lack of stone circles in Northumberland was down to early Christianity at the time of Oswald and Oswin... but I think most of the stone circles were destroyed in the late Georgian, early Victorian period. Around the same time as the Society of Antiquaries was formed to protect our disappearing heritage.

@@NorthernWayfarer-Alice yes such a shame farmers and land owners back in the day saw little or no value in their historical significance. Well never know the true number we had.

You are not selling this one very well with the opening 😂. To be fiat the trespassing woods did look nice and the weather improved as the day went on. Shame the landowner pulled all the other stones down but good tom see that one is still there, less the offerings. I cannot believe how big your daughter is now, must be the woodland air! Cheers Alan

she's jumped in height again during lockdown. Going to have to buy her a load of new clothes before she goes back to school in a couple of weeks.

The cuts in the side of the stone, were they natural or cut by man? I imagine blood offerings dripping down the side x

    • @NorthernWayfarer-Alice

It is open to debate. Some think it is natural erosion, some think it is carved. I think it is a bit of both. But, that said, I located a complete hidden stone circle before lockdown and although there is some debate as to whether it is a modern circle or an ancient circle it does seem to be on a mid-19th century map and I can't see the early Georgians or Victorians making stone circles for fun when they were in the process of destroying circles elsewhere in the county.
And on that stone circle there are no grooves in the rocks but it was using a different type of stone to the other circles in the northeast, which is another reason why it might be a modern circle and not an ancient one.. who knows?
