Moreover, from the videos I saw here on UA-cam, caracals always looked pissed anytime a human approaches them, hissing and showing other "annoyed cat" behaviour. They are surely beautiful creatures, but no idea why anyone in the right state of mind would like to keep such destructive and antisocial animals as pets. From what I saw, the only wild cats that seem to be generally very friendly towards humans are cheetas, but even they, while more tame than other feline cousins, need way too much space and physical activity to be happy living as pets.
I wouldn't reccomend anyone to get a caracal, but the only one I see hissing and annoyed all the time is Pumba. Gosha and Adolf rarely hiss and are way calmer. Maybe Pumba wasn't or isn't well treated or it's just his personality.
It's got to the point where if I see a "pet" Caracal video I'm 99% sure there's going to be a hiss at the camera. They aren't pets. This enough should be a clue.
I've seen those short clips of the big cat Pumba. I check in from time to time to make sure the owner is still alive. Commenters ask "does that thing even like you?". They can't meow or anything. From what I've seen and read all they can do is hiss, so caracals always seem angry.
@@SRMoore1178 actually, there are quite a few videos where Pumba is chill. It seems she just doesn't like the camera near her. As long as they don't shove the camera in her face, she is quite a mellow thing believe it or not.

i'm side eying the people that say, "this is the same with ALL cats" 🙄😒 there's a huge difference and you know that, or else they'd be readily available in pet stores smh. they are wild animals and do not belong jn someones' home. imagine being fully independent, doing whatever you want and someone forces you to live the rest of your life in their house and/or backyard. basically imprisoned. i'm sure most people wouldn't like that. observing them in their natural habitat is okay. having them as a pet is not.
You are completely right. I wonder if these people think that wolves are just like dogs as well and would be willing to keep a wolf in their home or even in their neighbor's home. Because comparing a caracal with your average pet cat is like comparing a wild wolf with a golden retriever. Only an idiot wouldn't see the difference...
I think it's closer to a Huskey. TO be clear, Huskies are not far removed from Wolves, and I very specifically choose them, as they have some of the strongest prey drives among Domesticated dogs. They ALSO cannot be healthily kept inside a home. That particular breed of dog must be socialized, trained, and managed when outside of it's intended habitat, and only *slightly* less within it. I also think it's important to clarify that I do not think most people are properly equipped to care for a Caracal, but the pearl clutching when one is seen as a pet is a bit much. They are not the same as a lion or a Bengal Tiger. @@veronicamonti8054
Well the exception would be feral stray cats, who have never had human contact. They also don’t belong in your home. They don’t want to be there, they don’t want affection, they just want to be free. I experienced this recently when i trapped a litter of kittens and their mom. I only kept mom for as long as I needed to to get her fixed. I felt so bad for her she just hid under the toilet in my bathroom…heartbreaking\
one of the things I really like about caracals is how they look like Pokémon, specially when they're kittens and make a noise that sounds like lasers firing. that said, yes, they're not good pets, even more so when one considers how hard it is to know when they're angry and when they're just vocalizing, because they *hiss* either way
The past few weeks I have seen Pumba on my news feed on Facebook all the time. At first I thought it was kind of cool. I learned what a caracal is. After a couple weeks, it has gotten really old and I got sick of it and the constant hissing. I hid the account because I got tired of seeing it always on my feed. This cat clearly belongs in the wild and its owners are using it for clicks at its expense.
Well, cats have been domesticated for centuries. I did a quick search on the internet and the statistics about domestic cats attacking humans are not alarming. It doesn't happen very often and the cats with behavioral problems are usually not causing lethal harm. As for the caracals, they are way more aggressive than cats, they have the same survival instincts of a wild animal and their attacks on humans are more lethal. We must think of them as stronger and more massive wild cats.
Caracals are basically a warm weather species of lynx, so if you're looking for an animal that poses a real threat to young children and other pets, they're perfect for the next low-budget wannabe "Tiger King" 😅😅
@2dhistory197 and there's plenty of videos of pit bulls playing with toddlers. It doesn't mean that the dog breed isn't responsible for the majority of attacks on humans.
I have a cat and he's a handfull. Sometimes house cats will playfully scratch and bite you, and you will just get a small scratch mark here and there. If one of these guys scartches or bites me, I'll be missing chunks of flesh from my arms and hands, or worse. I'll take me chances with a domestic cat.
I've had cats that would want a tummy rub and then after a while start rough housing. One of them when he asked for tummy rubs you learned to look for the crazy eyes in advance.
There's a Russian couple who own one called Pumba. He has a channel on here. He just seems to hiss when the camera is on him! They have three of them but he seems more aggressive!
this video and the comments agreeing give me hope 🥲 i got a few of those exploitative “exotic pet” videos recommended to me featuring one overweight and very defensive caracal and was so disturbed that most of the comments seemed fine with it. i’m glad people here recognize that these beautiful and intelligent animals belong in the wild, not the home (for their safety and ours!)
If i'm not wrong there's a video of this same Caracal walking on the streets of a certain neighboorhood without a leash. Imagine if someday some neighbor is playing with his kids down in the street and this wild cat gets frightened and run towards their direction. Such irresponsability to think that a animal like that can be treated as a pet.
I've seen many of those videos of Pumba and the sad thing is the Carcal every single time acts aggressive towards the owner. Some comments thought it was cute but many of them want the Carcal to be freed. He even had a video where he's holding meat and then walking away. The Carcal is pissed because it wants the food. How disgusting.
This Pumba is much too fatal, he is not healthy. Bit I don' t think, that it is aleays Bad to keep them. If you have large private ground with trees, rocks and meadows and offerhiml a play- mate I think you could. It can even be o.k. to cuddle with him, but not too much! The owner of Pumba really drowns him wirh Kissen, way too much for an animal and even for child!
It's insane that people would bring animals into their home that could kill them in an instant. I've seen the videos on here of the one Caracal that keeps hissing at the owner. People in the comments are like, oh no, that's how they communicate. But most of the times the hissing looked threatening or territorial to me, because it happened when Caracal was being approached.
They aren't house pets....at all. The one that hisses constantly is why. People say "well they hiss to communicate". I call bs. I've seen plenty not act that way....& I wouldn't have those ones either. If it hisses for everything....then how would you know if it was angry or happy or whatever? Sounds dangerous either way.
Someone should go rescue that cat that has been kept indoors like that. It's not healthy for any of us. It needs to be understood, respected and rehomed in a sanctuary and/or reintroduced into the wild.
It all depends on the owner. Irresponsible and careless owner... severe injury or death. Responsible owner with common sense.... injury minimal.... death avoided because you have an established relationship. Plenty of men and women out there walking next to and living with prides of lions and other wild animals. Every animal also has its personality.... I guess i wouldn't have one as a pet unless it's a newborn that grows with me.
The kittens are about as adorable as cats get…but no way in hell are they great pets. When my friends’ caracal died, they got two house cats. There was suddenly joy where there had not been before. If you want a big cat get a Maine Coon.
Such a beautiful creature. I'd love to own one but it would be sad knowing it probably won't truly be happy as it would be if it was in the wild and hunting for prey.
These big cats know where they are supposed to be...The ppl who own them just don't care to know where they are supposed to be. In keeping them as pets(they were not intended to be pets) the ppl who own them may be liable if these cats escape outside to neighbors or the public & they injured or kill some innocent person or if the cat loses it's life. They may be dangerous by nature & no amount of petting or training cannot change their inborn nature to bite hiss growl or bite! I just wonder why some ppl won't believe this?😮😮😮
I shared a house with a guy once in Florida. His girlfriend gave him a house cat, and he didn't want anything to do with it. The cat had been feral. That cat was totally unpredictable. I'd be sitting shirtless in the back yard, reading the paper. The cat would jump on my lap to get petted. When he decided he didn't want to be petted anymore, he would suddenly, without warning, CLAW me across the chest. He couildn't be trained. Imagine how much damage that Caracal can do.
So basically if you cant spend 24/7 with a Caracal, theyre not a good choice for you. Thanks for this video....Im amazed by their looks.....incredibly beautiful animals.....but this is the first informative video Ive seen and appreciate it. Thanks!
In my country (France), you actually need a permit / lisence, (just like a driver's lisence) to own such pets. (Aggressive dogs, Caracals, Pumas, any "dangerous" and "aggressive" pet) and you get some inspections from the authorities every year or so, to verify the condition in wich the animal lives in, etc...
They are beautiful animals. I would love to own one, but I know these animals are too good to obey man and should be left in their rightful place doing what they were born to do.
This is the kind of "pets" that only whimsical, selfish and/or stupid people have, mostly due to internet trends. A caracal is a wild animal, not a big hissing cat with cute ears. In my country is totally ilegal having one as pet, and im glad for it.
I got an caracal Cat right now on my lap he always goes on a walk always is gentle and cuddle bug very big paws dont matter plus they dont attack humans that often and some are pretty chill so u may change ur mind on getting one allthough it cost like 50k to get one actually for ur self but be aware they can be dangerous but sometimes they are cuddle bugs
@@AstrumKitten091 Just another misconception that gets repeated in various comment section. Truth is hissing is never friendly nomather if the ears are up or down. Ears down just suggest its feeling threatened. Ears up hissing is a sign its asserting its dominance or simply telling you to back off.
The biggest reason not to get a caracal is because they're assholes. They always hiss and growl at you for no reason. Even when you feed them, they don't warm up to you. These cats aren't the type to keep around your family.

I will NEVER understand why people want these. Yes, they really are absolutely gorgeous...GET A PORTRAIT CANVAS OF ONE THEN. Now I'm sure people dont get them for their looks alone, but I cant think of any other reason to get them.
A caracal is not different than a domestic cat which is a direct descendant of the African Wildcat. But because of their size, they will be much more happy if they have protected outdoor areas ( fenced areas). All cats need crude protein and that means ideally, fresh internal organs. They need high places to perch and enough space for solutide. There are many homes that can provide these things sutuationally.
I get the appeal of getting a big cat, and that is what certain breeds of large DOMESTICATED house cats are for. I watched this video of a caracal biting clean through a raw chicken drum stick and couldn't help but think of what a bite like that would do to the bones in our hands or wrists. Beautiful animals, I look forward to seeing videos of them in the wild, and maybe one day catching a glimpse of one myself out there.
Next up: "7 Reasons You Should NOT Get An African Wild Cat"... People like this 10,000 years ago would have kept you from having your tabby curled up in your lap.
Do not try to make wild animals live in your house. The #1 cause of death of house cats is being put down in shelters. Go save a couple of cats. They want to live with you!
Wow I've only seen a handful of people with caracals as pets and was already like "why are they as fat as my house cat?" but I had no idea how cheetah like they were in the wild (vs like say a leopard who is a thicker breed of large cat). Due to their paw size I had no idea how drastic the difference was, and it breaks my heart. And how often these cats are hissing (with ears back and full teeth engaged) they aren't happy. So few are content with their owners, and I assume they're doing more for them activity wise even if they are on the chunky side still. But just let them live in the wild or in a sanctuary. Hell, even a zoo would give them more space to roam than a house/apartment/condo. Stop buying them as pets. Fennec foxes also have big ears and are safer exotic pets that can't eat you/maul you. (Fennec fox protectors don't come for me, I'm just saying. I'm sure there are plenty of people who beg for us to stop making them pets too)
Pumba is one of those owned cats. I can't stand to see him growling and hissing all the time. I wish there were laws to help these cats when they end up in the wrong human hands.
I agree with all of these, but I am curious if there is a difference depending on how many generations the cats have been in human contact. Caracals have a pretty long history of human cohabitation, the royalty of India used to use them for bird hunting (since they can jump high enough to actually catch birds out of the air). I just wondering if caracals descended from those who have been with people for 500 or so year are "better" behaved than ones that are only a generation away from wild (or actually from the wild).
This cat was previously domesticated in ancient times . Especially in Egypt It’s not that aggressive like you describe .. a cat is a cat and each one has a it’s own personality.

Yet, once taken in, putting them back out in the wild, is the cruelest thing one can do. One in ten thousand people commenting recognize this dire fact.
Nocking stuff over, Getting on furniture, Getting on counter tops, Hunting all the time...... ALL cats do it. If raised from birth they will not attack humans unprovoked.
If you own one they might get out of the house somehow and then there is potential for an attack on another person. If they are owned your insurance rates should go up significantly. Huge liability.
I'm so glad this popped up in my recommendations. I've been getting those shorts from that caracal owner for days. That poor thing needs to be taken away from them.

According to people who only read Reddit, that’s the only way they can communicate because booting up zeolites is too hard.
I wouldn't reccomend anyone to get a caracal, but the only one I see hissing and annoyed all the time is Pumba. Gosha and Adolf rarely hiss and are way calmer. Maybe Pumba wasn't or isn't well treated or it's just his personality.
@@henrikardorski7995 well that because he doesn't like the camera the everytime Pumba hisses he is looking at the camera.

It's got to the point where if I see a "pet" Caracal video I'm 99% sure there's going to be a hiss at the camera.
They aren't pets. This enough should be a clue.
I knew #5 was coming. The amount of people who own these and let them cohabitate with their domestic pets, is actually insane to me.
when I first saw these being kept as pets, the first thing I assumed was "Oh I bet you cant have any other pets with that wild animal" lol

Yeah, most of the talking points were just describing normal cats.
Their aggressive, wild nature and size are the real issue
Found the dog nutter.
We need better laws nationwide about this stuff. These animals don’t belong in a suburban house. They are not pets.
Let Carcals, and every wild Animal live their lives in their natural environment!
Caracals are basically a warm weather species of lynx, so if you're looking for an animal that poses a real threat to young children and other pets, they're perfect for the next low-budget wannabe "Tiger King" 😅😅

I have a cat and he's a handfull. Sometimes house cats will playfully scratch and bite you, and you will just get a small scratch mark here and there. this video and the comments agreeing give me hope 🥲 i got a few of those exploitative “exotic pet” videos recommended to me featuring one overweight and very defensive caracal and was so disturbed that most of the comments seemed fine with it. i’m glad people here recognize that these beautiful and intelligent animals belong in the wild, not the home (for their safety and ours!)
I totally agree with you. I think I know the video of the obese caracal. Was his name Pumba?
@@Pawnee123-r1b Yes, Pumba!
Owning a Caracal is cruel. These cats are meant to roam free, never caged in a house.
No it couldn't. A caracal killing a human would be like a human killing a grizzly bear in melee combat. Extremely unlikely.
They dont get bigger than 18kg so its highly unlikely that they could kill an adult human.
If they jumped on a person and buy into their throat along with their claws they can kill a human. Especially a child
@@nikiasublett8916 very unlikely scenario. They prefer to run away as its dangerous for them to pick a fight with an adult human being. A child, sure.

They aren't house pets....at all. The one that hisses constantly is why. People say "well they hiss to communicate". I call bs. Wouldn’t not want that cat 🐈⬛ noooo to mean
Someone should go rescue that cat that has been kept indoors like that. It's not healthy for any of us. It needs to be understood, respected and rehomed in a sanctuary and/or reintroduced into the wild.
It all depends on the owner. Irresponsible and careless owner... severe injury or death.

All cats need crude protein and that means ideally, fresh internal organs. They need high places to perch and enough space for solutide. There are many homes that can provide these things sutuationally.

Do not try to make wild animals live in your house. The #1 cause of death of house cats is being put down in shelters. Go save a couple of cats. They want to live with you!
Having a caracal as a pet, is an insult to its nature, unless you too live a hunter's lifestyle out in the woods.
