Canadian Distillers Try to Pronounce Scottish Whisky Distillery Names (Spoiler: we're bad at it)

Andy from The Woods Spirit Co. joins us again to help Max and Jenna try to pronounce Scottish whisky distillery names. It's um... interesting. They tried their best, ok?

The bh dipthong in Scottish is pronounced as a V. For instance Bunnahabhain is pronounced Bunnahavun... I have not been to Torabhaig or Allt-A-Bhainne but I'd put my money on them being pronounced Toravaig and Alt-A-Vaine. This year I toured 18 Scottish distilleries and I pronounced about 15 of them wrong before arriving. It's a tough language.

It's definitely a tough language. An 18 distillery tour would be an amazing experience!

@@sonsofvancouver We didn't like Scotch so we figured it was one of two things - either Scotch was all bad or we didn't know what we were doing so to find out for sure we spent 2 months in Scotland and Ireland visiting distilleries. Come to find out we didn't know what we were doing and most Scotch is fantastic (just stay away from Johnny Walker!).
However, the names of things still throw us for a loop. Even when you ask someone local they may translate it to English for you which might not be correct. For instance we asked an Islay local if the town of Bowmore was pronounced Buh-more or Bow-more and he said Bow-more was fine but when he pronounced it he said Buh-more so what do you do?
Sometimes the "locals" don't know. We were in a Whisky store in Aberlour after a tour at Aberlour Distillery and I pointed out Kilchomen and pronounced it the way I thought it should be pronounced (kil-HO-men) and the Scottish lady corrected me and said Kil-komen. A week later we went to Kilchomen distillery on Islay and I was correct, it is pronounced Kil-HO-men. So even a local in the whisky business might be wrong if she's not from the same region.
