Donny Whisky Visits Sons of Vancouver Distillery X Collab w/ Mainland Whisky
We had Donny Whisky in to give Mainland whisky a tasting, now we had him in to taste two of our releases - Palm Trees and a Tropical Breeze and our Road Trip across the Midwest. Donny gave some classic Donny tasting notes and we all learned that we have two different ways of making the final product taste the way we like.

    Marshmallow circus peanuts (banana) is what you were referring to and I've always described that banana note in jack daniels as that. Everyone else says banana runts or just banana in general.

    I received a bottle of Crown Royal for my birthday last month in May. It has a tax stamp of 1964. Doesn't have any metric measurements on it. Says: 80 PROOF 4/5 QUART The line below that in cursive simply says: Fifth. Can anyone give a closer guess on actual age of this bottle? Sadly not realizing that it was a possibly old vintage, it has meant an untimely demise in my tummy. Tasted okay but I am not a connoisseur of whiskey like the folks in this video.

    I have a few unopened dusties. One is a 1970 Acadian Signature from Acadian Distillery in Bridgetown Nova Scotia. A now lost distillery, it was started in 1957 by Larry McGuinness and closed in 1986. At some stage Pernod Ricard bought the facility, but I'm not even sure the buildings are still there. They obviously had no interest in doing anything with it. The second bottle is a 100 Pipers Scotch from the 1960's, and it's a blend of grain and malt. There is zero information on the label, including the ABV. It should sit from 40 to 43%. Seagram's originally produced this, but it's now yet another Pernod Ricard product. The fill levels of both are very high, so I'm hoping for the best when the time comes to open and try them. It's going to depend on how they've been stored over the years. I can absolutely understand your fascination with delving into the past when it comes to these. Cheers all! 🥃 Marian 🇨🇦

      Those are some really cool finds! Finding a bottle from a lost distillery is is so rare, especially a bottle with a high fill line. So lucky!

    Amazing insight into the change of Johnnie Walker over the years and what a reveal over seasoning of oak! Wild. As for sales, maybe, but I've had enough variety in my journey to get a good sense of what I like vs what I do not. It does not align with age or abv, but that does have an influence. Cheers!

    • @sonsofvancouver
      @sonsofvancouver 2 місяці тому

      For sure! Age and ABV can influence people but it really depends on who they are and how far into the whisky journey they are. Cheers John!

    interesting that they would taste different was the 70's bottle a sealed bottle, that you just newly opened, or was it already unsealed when you got it? Obviously being a blend there is no control of what distilleries they used between the 70's and today. So really there should be a difference in taste, I would think. Maybe if you could get a single malt from the 70's -80's and today and see what the tastings would be like. That would be a good comparison.

    It's aged about 3-4 yrs longer than 101. You're just tasting the extra age. Try a CN-F wearhouse Kentucky Spirit. Camp Nelson. I don't know why but they are all amazing.

    Congratulations to Davin on his newest venture! You both certainly have an infectious passion. The history and development of the whisk(e)y industry, particularly in Canada, the US, and Scotland, is a special interest of mine as well. There are many wild, convoluted stories, and sketchy characters lurking. We have an antiquarian and used bookstore, and over the last few years I've read every single book on whisk(e)y that has passed through our shop. It's one heck of a rabbit hole to fall into, and I agree...it's endlessly fascinating! Cheers all! ☕☕ (It's before noon here...) Marian 🇨🇦

    I did nearly this same comparison with a couple mini bottles. The two did taste distinctly different, the older one definitely seemed to have more punch, I kinda wish I could have shared it with you as well, I wonder how similar it was to your 1970s specimen.
