  • Opposition leaders and western nations have denounced a so-called foreign influence bill passed by Georgia's national parliament.
Thousands of demonstrators have blocked a major traffic junction in the capital Tbilisi.
DW's Maria Katamadze spoke to former Georgian president Giorgi Margvelashvili at the protests.
Critics fear the law will be used to stamp out dissent - and will dent Georgia's hopes of joining the European Union. The legislation requires media and other groups to register as "pursuing the interests of a foreign power" if they get more than 20% of their funding from abroad.
Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili has vowed to veto the bill, but the government says it will use its majority to override her and ensure the measure becomes law.
The European Union have criticised the Georgian government's plans, saying the law isn't compatible with EU membership .
The US government has also cautioned against its adoption, warning that Washingon would "fundamentally reassess" ties with Tbilisi if the bill wasn't withdrawn.

The moment it joins EU... everyone will leave Georgia and their markets will be overflown with EU goods, completely killing the little profits they have from domestic production. And as soon as EU starts pushing it into NATO, it will be in war with Russia. And Georgia will lose about 25% of its GDP generated from Russian trade and tourism.

To all crying "US has the same law", in US foreign influence bill requires disclosure of foreign gifts, scrutiny of grant applicants and vendors with certain foreign connections, and thorough scrutiny of foreign applicants for research positions and of foreign travel and activities of employees of major research institutions.
Russian one, and what they want to pass in Georgia forces businesses that receive 20% or more of their founding from foreign countries to register as "agents of foreign influence". This law has had a devastating impact on non-profits and human rights groups in russia, forcing many to cease their activities. Georgians are afraid that like in russia this bill will be used to quash dissent and free expression by going after nongovernmental organizations with financial ties overseas.
According to multiple polls, about 80% of Georgians are against that bill.

The Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) in the US is worse....it requires ANY relationship with a foreign entity to be REGISTERED regardless whether you receive funds or not. You also need to make PERIODIC public disclosure of your relationship with the foreign principal, as well as activities, receipts and disbursements. All this is administered by the counter intelligence section of the National Security Division. Naturally they will not rely on you to submit the information as they constantly monitor anyone anyway with foreign ties....phone conversations, bank transactions, etc.
