I just received my first two bulbs of giganteum allium and I’m excited after watching your video. I’ll plant them tomorrow to celebrate some good news from my doctor. Thank you
I never really knew what to do to make a garden look nice bc my parents don't take a lot of care of the garden, but this fall I'm planting a border with a mix of alliums and perennials to surprise them when they come back from holiday. Thank you so much for all this advice, I hope they will look lovely next summer!
I never used to appreciate alliums but now that gardening is my obsession (and I struggle with strong deer pressure) I cannot get enough! I have a bunch of varieties and keep adding more every year. The drumstick type totally stole my heart this year and you’re right-pollinators loved them as much as I did!
which varies are your favorite? I’ve just grown a gladiator on my balcony and it’s the coolest flower. my gf calls it a whoville flower. didn’t know they came in other types. actually just finding out it’s perennial. 🤩
@@geomanko4142 yes there are many kinds out there. I love the drumstick type, christophii, Everest, schubertii, karataviense, and a type that has little bells, called honey garlic. I planted a blue type and tall reddish one last fall and look forward to seeing them too. They’re all great! And they dry well in the garden so they’re always interesting.
@@emkn1479Do you use the seeds in the flower to get more plants? I’m new to alliums and it sounds like I’m a couple years behind your experience. The bulbs are expensive, so I’d like to learn how to grow more plants from seed. Have you?
@@ttb1513 I buy bulbs when they go on sale, at the end of the season. I’m sure I have some seedlings out there, as I don’t mind if they selfsow, but I haven’t done it on purpose. I think I heard that it takes 3 or 4 years to flower when grown from seed. You could buy just a few bulbs to enjoy the blooms from year to year and then use their seeds to propagate more 🤷♀️
I planted them for the very first time. My centre border has a flag pole so I got a little creative putting 3 Globemasters around the pole then a ring of a little shorter pink variety then a ring of a smaller purple. I hope it turns out the way I envision it. So excited for Spring 😍
Planted alliums this year for the very first time. I only planted 6 bulbs but I sure will be planting more next fall. I cant wait to see my gladiators bloom! I absolutely love your videos. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Hugs from zone 6B in Massachusetts ☺
I saw Alliums for the first time this summer at a neighbors yard. I was mesmerized by the color and the amount of bees it attracts. I was bummed how expensive they are However, my local Costco brought purple sensation by Longfield to my surprised! It was an amazing deal, so just waiting for the 1st frost here in zone 5a (it's October 16th and we are strangely quite late for it) Can't wait to have my own beautiful garden like yours! You are an amazing inspiration 🤗
Yay for me I was binge watching your videos and came across this one!! A few weeks ago we planted about 50 alliums around our new property!! Thanks. Oh and we are surrounded by deer so we are excited!
Two years ago I purchased 5 pots of planted alliums on sale in Sept. They are now one of my favorite flowers. My honey bees just love them. I am wanting to make an allium, Russian sage, lavender and fern garden and wonder how they will do in sand.....I will have to embellish the bed but I live on a sand ridge and the sand is very deep. Also do I need to split the clump after a time? What fertilizer do you use on them? I can't believe I did not know about these until 2 years ago. Fabulous flower. Mine are in bloom right now.
Great video. Gardening since a youngster. Never planted allium. Knew about them and seen them in other gardens. Just downsized to a condo and picked up some daffodils and some purple sensation allium. Getting ready to plant just to perk up back area next year. Thank you for your clarity on the subject.
Hi ! Is it possible to show the complete names of the Allium in the Ppt pic at 2:59 as it is cut at the bottom for complete names, thanks and really enjoyed and implemented your style…
Hi there! you just made my day even better!! I live in KY and there is a street center divider with tons of Alliums and I admired and wonder what they were?? until now! I know what they are and I'm definitely adding them to my garden! ;) thank you so very much!
I have Globe Masters and LOVE them - I don’t do anything to them and they’ve been super reliable - but I didn’t realize it’s normal for the foliage to yellow and die off before they even bloom. I thought I wasn’t caring for them properly! So that’s a relief but I do have to move them to the background more so I can get something else in front of them as it is unsightly (they’re in a clump bordering my driveway right near the front entrance so highly visible to anyone coming to the door). But man, those globes when they bloom... can’t beat them.
I planted gladiators this year. So excited to see them. I have a yellow one that was in my garden already. Looking forward to seeing yours and mine this Spring 😊
Great video and very informative. If your allium does self seed, what will the seedlings look like? I'm afraid I would think it was a weed and pull it! Also, would the seedling take a few years before it bloomed? Thanks!
Great video. I found your channel last night and it looks like you have great content on your channel! Subscribed and I plan to go back and binge watch your videos and share them with my daughter. All the best to you.
So I do not have to dig them up after they bloom ? Now I'm excited and what to plant them . Also what are the name of the ones in your Christmas tree ? Thank You 🌲
I have a lot of trees in my backyard and hoping to repel mosquitoes. I’m a beginner to gardening...I’m in the DFW, so I need to find out what zone I’m in but can these grow in mostly shade? In the area I would like to plant these, I get some morning sun for a couple of hours but that’s it.
Hi Danielle, thanks for the great info on alliums. Hoping you can do a step by step segment on digging up dahlias to store for winter. I need to do mine asap and it would help. Thanks☺️
Hi Pam! I dug mine a few weeks ago. Here is a great article from a fellow farmer. This is method I use. I store in paper bags in the basement. www.threeacrefarm.net/blog/2018/10/30/how-to-dig-and-store-your-dahlia-tubers
Thank you! Need some in between color options I have a small area with just Dwarf Nikko Deutzia & Bobo Hydrangeas ,just discovered that means no flowers Late May - Mid July - this should help!
I’m not much of a flower Gardner, I tend to just stick to vegetables. However I have a huge rock garden that has become overtaken by weeds over the years. I’m going to try to plant somePurple sensation among some other bulbs.
I have not been successful at growing alliums, but I'll keep trying. I saw them blooming naturally in Venezuela. If they grow wild there, surely I can get them to grow here in the high desert. Zone 7
Perfect timing for this video! I just bought a whole bunch of alliums on clearance and am getting ready to plant :D Also thrilled to have stumbled upon your channel, consider me subscribed! PS. WE ARE!!!
WARNING: When she says "self seeding" believe it. I bought three globe Allium about 15 years ago. Very attractive flowers. I have spent the last 12 years trying to get rid of them. Every year I pull them out, bulb and all, after they finish flowering only to have 30-50 more come up the following year. Hopefully, I finally got them all this year.
I've seen that some allium gardeners will actually spray paint the spent bloom so they can have some color all season long. Have you heard of that? I planted my 1st alliums and am looking forward to some Purple Sensation next spring!
Could you tell me what mic you use for your videos? It sounds great! I was also wondering if you've ever talked about how you connected with potential buyers for a family-scale cut flower farmer and make some $ from that? I'd love to learn about that too! Many thanks!
Hi there! I use a tascam lav mic. In the area I live in many farmers have stands. I sold to florists in years past but now I sell solely at our farm stand.
Hi. I love your sharing! I tried to screenshot your chart of alliums but the bottom names were cut off & I wondered if you would mind sending me the chart or where I could get it? Thank you so much

I am in Zone 10b. I have gladiolus bulbs to plant. You mentioned to plant allium in middle because of dry leaves. What do you recommend to plant in front. I have a 20ft semi circle shape of landscape that I am redoing in front up against house.
I tried ping pong alliums this summer in 8a South Georgia. So disappointed not sure what I did wrong but only 1 bloomed normally. The others were still trying to flower but the tops were dried out and shriveled up. I finally cut them because I was tired of the way they were making the rest of the garden look
